For whatever reason, every second building in Kota Kinabalu seems to be a hotel. There are international chains, local hotels, cheap Chinese-run lodges and numerous backpacker oriented places. The last place a backpacker should consider is the backpacker places. We checked out a couple of these and they offered stuffy, overpriced sweat-boxes with outside bathrooms. And what do you get for all this discomfort? As far as we could see, only a steep price tag. One place quoted us RM 160 for a tiny box of a room. Even the five star places are only asking around RM 300!

If you are on a tight budget, consider one of the numerous small local places. We looked at four or five before settling on Impiana Mutiara Hotel. For a mere RM 65, we got a small but clean room with hot-water shower, air conditioning and a TV. You would be lucky to get much more than a dorm bed for that at the backpacker's lodges.

We were shown 3 rooms as booked (standard no window) which were all covered in damp, floor to ceiling. We were forced to pay extra to “upgrade” to a window room as the air in the rooms was barely breathable and would not be safe to stay in. Looked nothing like the pictures

The exceptionally bad service is what I'll start with. The reception staff were more interested with playing games on their mobile phones rather than serving us and checking us in. On arrival we were shown our private double room. This was adjacent to the main reception. We were originally booked in for 2 nights with the intention to extend for longer however, we were desperate to leave after the first night.

There were rats in the ceiling which kept us awake at night with their scurrying and squeaking over our heads. Then at 4-5am the reception thought it would be ok to shout and talk so loudly outside our bedroom door which again woke us up. It was as if the reception staff had just come back from drinking or partying and sounded drunk. This happened on BOTH nights. The second night was exactly a repeat of the first night but even worse because we were woken by bed bugs! After this we could wait to leave.

On the plus side, I would say the location of this hostel was pretty good. Opposite the daily night market.

Definitely stay away from this place. Simply not worth it for the price you're paying.

They gave me a room at the top floor (4th floor), where it's a deluxe queen package. Yet the room is jz very small. Not up to 300m square. And there is no water in the bathroom. But the man there said maybe because the hotel is full thud the water is slow to rise. But a pail is there that's mean this room always has water problem. When I asked for a change they said it's full already. I paid RM73 for a night and it's not worth it.

Room is small but with private bathroom and cable TV, you cannot expect more if you are paying less than RM70 per night. Choice of cable TV is limited to HBO, others are local channel. Location is excellent and near airport bus terminal (5 mins walk). It is in a central position between Centrepoint and Wisma Subah. There is a night market in front of the hotel. Plenty of food outlets around. Only concern is when you have heavy luggage. There is no lift in the hotel. Good free WfiFi in room. Receptionists are OK and speak reasonable English. There is a 24-hour convenience store downstair.

I used to stay at backpacker's lodge for my 2 previous visit in KK. I've always looking for a private room for the budget of RM80 or below. When i found that the said price for normal backpacker's lodges in KK (shared bathroom, paid towel,no tv and can't bring partner *it depends on the host consideration) are actually not worth it if you are single traveller and looking for a "total privacy with total facilities" room. Good location and here i had; 1)Queen bed 2)TV with local and selected Astro channels 3)High speed wi-fi service *level 1 only. 4)Attached bathroom-shower well functioned 5)Air-cond *excludes free coffee & toast bread breakfast offered by the normal backpacker's lodges, this type of hotel has changed my mind for staying in KK in the future. Don't complaint about the interior and room size, your budget are worth with it. If you feel the blanket was not changed, just ask to replace it. This is below RM80 hotel for a "total privacy & total facilities" and much better than below RM80 backpacker's lodges without total privacy & total facilities.
