from the website it says.."Riverside Boutique Guesthouse has to be the smallest hotel in Kuantan but provides you with the most comfortable beds in town. Enjoy our guesthouse friendliness together with 5-star comfort in a modern Malaysian setting".... (so so true and much more.. :) )
We booked 2 rooms for the family and were pleasantly surprised with the interior and deco of the rooms. Large roomy rooms with creature comforts and big clean bathroom as good as a 4 or even 5 star outfit.
Check in was ok with the travel vouchers from the hotel website and staff were very helpful to attend to our requests.
Breakfast are not included in the room package but on the ground floor is a nice cosy restaurant for food or else you can talk a walk along the road as there are other eateries nearby.
The guesthouse does not have that many rooms so one better book it fast :)

I've never found hotel breakfasts to be noteworthy; much less THE most compelling reason for booking a place, but that's exactly what the scones at Riverside Boutique Guesthouse are. I ate them every single day of my 5-day/4-night stay.

The amenities in the rooms are well beyond the usual at this price range. The rooms have exquisite hardwood floors and the most comfortable pillows and mattresses I've ever had in a hotel.

The owners are an exceedingly thoughtful, conscientious couple who bent over backwards to make my stay comfortable, memorable, and productive. Chat with them if you can and get recommendations for local attractions. They are an international couple who have lived in Malaysia for decades.

Room 413. No tissues. No mirror in the room. No hair dryer. No water kettle. Not 50 m to Esplanade but 800m.
It's not a good place to spend 2 nights or more since the place needs to be more serious in the business. Probably Covid has dampen the spirits of the management.

this is a difficult review as the guesthouse itself was nice and the room was nice too. but the staff was so ignorant and so incompetent that i cant help it but write it down. as always i hope this will reach the responsible people in charge and the staff can work on their attitude.
we stayed in the executive delux room with an extra mattress for our girl and the room was actually nice with a king bed, aircon, fan, plasma tv, wifi and a little fridge, coffe and tea complimentary.
we booked without breakfast as the set breakfast wasnt something for us. instead we chose freely from the menu and the breakfast with homemade bread was superb! what made this lovely place not so pleasant was the staff. when we asked on two days if we could have fresh juices at 15 minutes before closing hour, the staff said kitchen was closed. we saw 4 girls from the staff being very busy with their phones and couldnt bother making a juice.kitchen was open til 4 pm. breakfast is served after 8 am and on our last day when we asked for breakfast at 5 to 8 the girl said we have to wait til 8! omg what the heck!!!??? after waiting 5 minutes (we were the only customers that morning) i went again to ask if we could order now. she seriously looked at the time and said " one minute to go" !!! the most unpleasent of the staff was the muslim girl who was most of the time in charge! on our first day we had no hot water in the showers, let alone warm. when complaining the next morning to the same girl she said that she will call the maintenance but cant promise if he will come today or can fix it. instead of saying something comforting or even being sorry she just couldnt care less. the next day we had hot water though. the owner seemed to be a nice lady. she came and apologised and asked if we had hot water again. it seems so unfair when you are a nice owner and your being let down by your staff.
surely the staff has to change their attitude and hope this message will reach them as the owner seems to care but her staff doesnt care at all!

Room: room and toilet was clean. Environment very quiet and peaceful. They have a lounging area which so nice decorated. Love the interior. It brings the ambience to another level.

Staff: they are very very friendly and helpful. Humble and always with smile! They are not like a professional hotelier in a uniform. But they definitely have best customer service.

Breakfast: they dont have a buffet spread. However their set breakast is acceptably decent. First day I had English breakfast and second day I had Nasi Lemak. Pretty delicious. Enjoyed my unlimited fresh juices. Apple and orange.

Carpark: they dont have designated carpark. However there not much cars in that shop lots. So it is not hard to get a parking right in front of the hotel.

Overall hotel:
Since our room just 1st floor, the Wifi was unbelievably strong. We can even watch movie online!

Enjoyed my stay at this little guesthouse of only 6 rooms. The breakfast was a delight and the rooms were clean and well designed. Good shower and clean bathroom. Helpful and friendly staff. The noise from the street below can be annoying even though the hotel had installed double glazing windows.

Wife and I stayed here 1 night on July 5, 2014. Booked the standard queen room at a price of RM153.45 (included breakfast) through Agoda.com, and booking and payment were efficient as usual. We arrived at the hotel at about 6:30pm and the first of three faux pas committed by the front desk clerk was him assuming that my wife was Chinese and greeting her as such. She's not Chinese, she's Malay.

Reservation was in order, the clerk asked for my wife's IC, then indicated that there would be an RM150 deposit payable on the room, which was basically to deter smoking in the rooms. This is something that we had not noticed on Agoda when booking so we were not prepared with enough cash. My wife offered to put the deposit on her debit card (we don't carry credit cards) and there was some discussion as to how the deposit would be credited back later. The clerk didn't know so called his supervisor and the result of the discussion was that they wouldn't take the deposit via debit card. The clerk proceeded to tell us that he didn't know the location of the nearest ATM, couldn't check us in at that time without a cash deposit and that there wasn't anything he could do about the situation. This was faux pas #2: you never, EVER tell a customer that there is nothing you can do. There is always SOMETHING that can be done for a customer, even if it requires going up the chain of authority to do it.

At that point, my bp was rising and I told the clerk I want our Agoda payment back so we could go find a room elsewhere. My wife explained to the clerk that we needed to break our Ramadan fast shortly and we didn't have time to be looking all over for an ATM for cash as we needed to look for food first. She asked him to call his supervisor and to put her on the phone. My wife explained the situation to the supervisor and the result was that the clerk checked us in without the deposit. Kudos to the supervisor for understanding our situation :-)

During the check-in process, there was some discussion between the clerk and my wife about breakfast, which is included in the price of the room, and about a refund of the breakfast portion of the price. Knowing now that my wife is Malay, and therefore Muslim by default, he knew that she wouldn't need breakfast as it is Ramadan and their breakfast is served too late to be useful to someone that needs a pre-dawn meal at 5am. But he commits faux pas #3 - the most serious of the three - when he tells my wife that I will still be having breakfast. She looks at him wide-eyed and tells him "suami orang Muslim" (my husband is Muslim!). We are now insulted beyond belief. What? Just because we are a mixed Malay/white couple you assume that the white husband isn't a practicing Muslim...? Or maybe he's thinking that I'm a non-Muslim and we're up to hanky panky...? I'd like to chalk up this serious faux pas to the clerk's inexperience at dealing with mixed Maly/non-Malay couples but at that point I really didn't care what the reason was. My wife and I were seething as we (finally) make our way up to our room. There would be one miserable review posted up on TripAdvisor, regardless of anything else, I assured her.

We got up to the room (room #1) and found it quite nice. Cozy, in fact. We've stayed at other hotels with small rooms whose layout made it seemed like you were sleeping in a coffin. Not this one, thankfully!:-) Mattress was nice and firm and the bed came with four great pillows. Air con was quiet and efficient. Shower pressure and temperature were great, although the shower didn't drain fast enough. Only complaint was the TV: screen size (LCD) was tiny, and of the several ASTRO channels, two or three were not working. Sleep was enjoyable, except for what seemed like F1 and motorbike races going on down the street in front of the hotel.

We checked out at noon on Sunday, the 6th. The clerk's supervisor checked us out and we related our concerns to her about the way we were treated. She apologized profusely, advising that the clerk was fairly new to the hotel and that she would make sure that he was provided with some additional training. We indicated that we would gladly have provided the deposit after check in but that our priority at the time was to get checked in and to look for food to break fast with. She told us she understood our situation.

We advised her that their staff cannot be making mistakes like these with their customers. If their staff are going to make assumptions about the religious status/practices of mixed Malay/non-Malay couples during Ramadan then they need to assume that BOTH are Muslim, and that BOTH are practising. Better than making assumptions, however, is to ASK whether breakfasts will be needed. Best would be for the hotel to offer and be able to provide a boxed/bagged suhur meal instead, although we know this may not be practical and would be going above and beyond the usual. The supervisor did provide an RM20 refund for the unused breakfasts, and apologized again for the trouble. We were impressed with her empathy, understanding, and appreciated her service recovery effort. It really did go a long way to making us feel better.

Upon reaching home, I checked the Agoda.com website for the hotel to see if I could locate any reference to the requirement for the RM150 deposit. Yes, it's there. But you will only find it if you click on the room description. Since we had seen photos of the rooms here on TripAdvisor, we knew what kind of room we wanted and could expect, so we didn't click on the room description and didn't see the deposit policy. The deposit policy is also on the hotel's own website, but you will only find it if you click on the "Reservations" tab. We'll know for next time, as we are very likely to make this hotel our choice when in Kuantan again.

I've been to Kuantan every year and this time chose to stay in this hotel as recommended by my friend. Although the price is a bit expensive as compare to other hotel, I think this it is worth every penny you spent the night here. There is only 6 rooms available in this hotel so it will be very quiet for most of the time. Located beside the main road of Kuantan town, it tends to get noisy on Saturday night if you got the rooms facing the main road. Noise from motorcycle and cars blasting their exhaust all nights. From the exterior, it looks just like other backpackers hostel on top of the shophouses but once you step into the room, my first impression was "WOW!!!". Even my parent was a bit surprise when they step into the room. Clean room, modern style, comfortable bed and pillow, good Wifi speed. I actually sleep the whole afternoon inside the room after checked into the hotel. No nearby restaurant though, but you can eat in their cafe and that was the place we've for our breakfast. Will be back here again for sure.

I have been staying in the single room a few times and the wifi connection was quite good as I could stream online drama to watch. However, the hotel did put a note that some areas within the hotel might not have good wifi connection. Hope this helps.
