My wife and I arrived at the Naha Airport and caught the monorail to Makashi. It was afternoon and raining and it was a very nice surprise the find out that the Nansei Kanko Hotel is located near the bottom of the stairs from the Makashi Station. We were provided with a very clean and comfortable twin room. It is a business hotel, possibly 2 stars, but the surprise was how nice he staff were and we had no expectation for any type of service, but they actually tried very hard. The beds were hard and there weren't enough pillows, only one flat one, but when I am tired, I can sleep anywhere. Another surpise was the breakfast, which catered for my needs with scrambled eggs on toast and nice mlk tea, fruits and juice. I even found a knife and fork to eat with. No complaints about that. The bathroom in the room was a prefab unit, but everything was there and it all worked. The water in the shower was hot, morning and night which is a positive. The hotel is located on a main street and the side rooms face into a primary school. I had no issues with the smell of the room, though I noticed it only when I entered the room and didn't think of it again. Overall, the hotel provides a clean and convenient room to sleep in and its cheap. The Lawsons Convenience store next door, can provide cheap pre-made food and you don't need to speak Japanese to buy some. Recommended for night stopover, as an arrival or departure hotel, near transport, to or from the airport.
It may not be a problem for everyone but it was a huge shock for me to learn all the guest rooms in this hotel are smoking room!!! When I walked into my room I instantly felt unwell by the strong smell of cigarettes and within a few minutes I started sneezing... I asked at the reception if they could do anything about it. Then they brought in an air purifier machine to run in the room for a while.
Despite my experience about the room I can commend some parts of their services. Breakfast was nice at higher floor looking over the city sites. There was a warning for breakfast time to avoid big group dining. Reception staff were friendly and kind to respond to all our inquiries. When we came back to the hotel to collect our bags after checking out they brought in towels for us (we got rained on) and offered a space to repack our bags. When we asked for a taxi they escorted us to the street carrying our bags holding umbrella.
The location of the hotel is pretty good for hanging out Kokusai Dori - the main shopping and dining area in Naha. Markets and Pottery streets are all within the walking distance. The convenience store is right at the entrance. The hotel is right next to Monorail Makishi station. There is no parking space at the hotel and just pulling over to unload the bags in front of the hotel is very difficult as it is right at the corner and right at the start of the busy street.
We decided to stay at this hotel as we wanted to check out Kokusai Dori. And the price was reasonable including breakfast. I think it served the purpose for us. But I hesitate to say I like to stay here again. I would like the hotel to consider providing clean and healthy guest rooms for non smokers. PLEASE!!!
Arrived at the hotel in our rental car but there is no place to park our car while we unload our luggage as the road infront of the hotel is narrow and busy. Hence, my husband had to drive the car to a car park a distance away that does not belong to the hotel. Whilst waiting for my husband, I decided to check-in, Despite providing the necessary documents, the hotel reception insisted that I must pay in full before I can be given the room key. Tried to explain to them that my husband will pay when he is back from parking the car and that we are very tired from the long drive and it was late but the answer was "this is the rule". Had to wait for more than 45 mins as my husband lost his way while trying to park the car in a dark alley about 7 mins from the hotel. Upon check in, we were given only 1 card key although it was a triple sharing room. When we asked for another key, it was again " this is the rule".
The next day, we did not leave the card key with the reception and returned to a hotel room which was not cleaned by housekeeping. Again it was the rule to leave the card key at the reception, else, there would not be any housekeeping.
The location of the hotel is convenient with Lawson at the ground floor of the hotel and shops and restaurants nearby. Room is small despite a triple sharing room.
Beware - Budget hotel with very poor service. There is no concept of customer service in this hotel.
Just a standard Japanese business hotel, a bit old so the air con isn't working very well! But the location is great as it's right next to the Makishi Monorail station and is right located on the Kokusai Dori (the Main Street where you got all shopping and restaurant).
