Detailed Reviews
It was frustrating find an Osen Guest House that typically includes two meals per day to provide true vegetarian food. In Japan, seafood is considered as vegetarian, and in most dishes as long as there is no meat they are considered as vegetarian (despite the broth is made with chicken stock or bones). I are happy to find Hotel Seikoren because in addition to regular meal, they provide "SHOJIN-RYORI" which is a artistic true vegetarian cuisine mainly made from "YUBA" (soy product) to represent the beauty of seasons and self-enlightenment. For example, my vegetarian boyfriend got to have yummy soymilk hot pot with vege tempura, assortment of mushroom, and grill tofu while I enjoy my Kobe beef sukiyaki. Although he ended up with a special rates which is about 40 dollars more expensive than I but it was totally worth it. Beside the yummy food, the staffs are friendly and speak English. The room is okay (they don't have non-smoking rooms but we survived) with nice mountain or river view. The Osen is small, nothing luxurious but simply clean and blissful. The location is extremely convenient, we do not need to take the bus at all because we are like 4 mimutes away from the temples and shops. And when we got lazy to carry out lougage down the mountains to the train station, just hop on the bus that comes every 10 minutes and stop at the front doors. I think this is a wonderful place for vegetarian, or people who have a budget and do not care to stay in a 5 star hotel.

I urge anyone visiting Japan to try to visit the absolutely gorgeous mountain town of Nikko. The massive shrines there of Tokugawa Ieyasu from 1617 in the Edo period are some of the finest national treasures in Japan. An easy 90 mins by fast train from Tokyo or Shinjuku, we stayed at Hotel Seikoen, which is really a mix of traditional Ryokan and Japanese style hotel. The food was probably the best we had in Japan, superb in-room dinners and over-the-top country breakfasts. The staff were very special, not much English, but they made up for that with friendly service. Nothing was a problem. They have a lovely relaxing onsen. The best time to go is for the Nikko festival of 1000 samurai in October - a treat you'll remember for a lifetime!

Don’t expect upscale and classy; the property does look a little worn and the rooms are functional at best. The room comes with dinner served in room and breakfast at the restaurant, which are the highlights. The elaborate kaiseki dinner was a fun and delicious experience (lots of yuba, Nikko’s specialty) used in interesting ways) and even though English is not widely spoken in this ryokan, the staff who served it tried his best to explain what every single dish was in English, and he did an excellent job. Breakfast at the restaurant was also filled with interesting dishes and yummy.
There’s an indoor and outdoor onsen and also a sauna within the indoor onsen, though I only had time to try the indoor one. Through the full length window, you can view the trees outside, making for a relaxing experience. The indoor onsen is open 24 hours, so you can even go in for a late night soak according to the helpful staff but the outdoor one and sauna have limited opening hours.
In terms of location, this ryokan can’t be beat. It’s smack in the middle of Nikko’s famous temples. The UNESCO world heritage site Toshogu Shrine is a mere five minutes stroll away. Shinkyo Bridge and Kanmangafuchi Abyss are all within walking distance too. To reach the ryokan, you’ll need to take a bus from Tobu-Nikko station, and bus stop No. 81 is just right outside the hotel. Bus stops No. 7 and 8 at the main road are about a 10-15 mins walk away. (You’ll need to get to the main road to take the bus for the Chuzenji Onsen area and beyond.)

We booked a night at this hotel a month in advance because their website stated that they could prepare shojin ryouri (vegetarian) meals. They called us to tell us that they would not prepare food for vegetarians. When we mentioned their outdated website, they were quite rude. Needless to say, we cancelled our booking.

We enjoyed two nights at this lovely ryokan located adjacent to the Nikko shrine grounds. Dinners are served in your room and are a feast. Breakfasts are served in a lovely dining room lined with potted flowers. Public baths are pleasant and service was kind and welcoming. Shuttle service from the train station can be arranged. Pleasing walk down the hill through town for your return.

I stayed at the Hotel Seikeon in February for one night. The setting was awesome in the Nikko Heritage site. A short taxi ride took us through the winding mountainous road. We walked a short distance from the JP railway station to the visitor information centre. The air is breathtaking crisp and cool.
In keeping with the graciousness of the Japanese people this hotel is exceptionally, clean and bright. The room are set in the 'Traditional' style with low rise table, tea to welcome us after our long journey. Relaxing in the spa and hot springs was a treat to behold, healing and tranquil.
The highlight of the following morning was dressing from breakfast in "Kimono" robes. Our hosts welcomed us with 'good morning'. We sat down, a display of 20 or so different exquisite mouth watering delights, to be share among friends. It wasn't difficult for me to be totally absorbed into the Japanese experience.
The futons and pillows were so loves to nestle in, with all the amenities. Including juice, water an cool drink vending machines on the same floor as the spa. There is a gift shop and postage can be purchase from the hotel, mailing it directly.from the front desk. .
The manager and staff were wonderful, polite, accommodating. Do try at least to learn 'thank you" in Japanese, this will take you a long way:

The location is meters walk from Toshugu Shrine. However, if you bring luggage it is preferable to take taxi, or bus that stops in front of the hotel (Seikoenmae bus stop). Otherwise, it will be a painful walk since the walk is not flat (a bit of climb).
Hotel room is bit old and smelly, especially the bathroom. Probably because no exhaust fan in the bathroom.
The dinner and breakfast were sumptuous and nice and the staffs are fluent in English.

The location of this hotel is superb. It is literally a five minute walk to the Nikko shrine complex and this allows you to be at the complex when they open at 8am before the crowds. The hotel itself is flawless, but be sure you know what you are getting. And that is a real Japanese experience, from the tatami mats and sleeping on the floor, the baths and the meals. The meals are strictly Japanese. Both dinner and breakfast . Large amount of fish, soup, rice, black tea. A big part of staying here are the baths. And they are public (although they are separated by men an women) You go to the baths naked. The staff is flawless in their service. They see to your every need. I would recommend this hotel if you want a Japanese experience.

Like the idiots that we were, we got on the wrong Rapid Service carriage from Tobu Asakusa station to Nikko. Our carriage uncoupled and went on a different branch on the line. We realised this after a while, and got off at the next stop.
The hotel very efficiently arranged a transport to get us from that stop (20 minutes away from the correct stop).
The kaiseki, which featured Tochigi wagyu shabu shabu was very lovely, save for the cold tempura (they probably cooked it prior because we missed the correct dinner service time).
The onsen (outdoor and indoor) were alright. Have been to better, particularly outdoor, onsens.
Also can't fault the location, in the middle of the temples and shrines area.

We stayed this hotel for 2 nights in mid August including breakfast and dinners with traditional Japanese room. The dinners were served in our own room and the food is excellent and fresh. The location of this hotel is also convenient to world heritage shrines of Nikko. The room is spacious and clean for 4 of us (2 kids, 12 and 9 yrs old). The onsen is nice and clean. The staff and the owner are very friendly and nice. The owner also speaks English and is extremely helpful. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay there and I highly recommend this hotel if you plan to visit Nikko. Free wifi is also available.

Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands237 contributions102 helpful votesI don't know, but usually in sauna's they are not permitted, because Japanese maffia always have tattoos. But I suppose when you look like a tourist, that would be fine. Or when they are small...
I advise to read the hotel information guide in your room.

Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands237 contributions102 helpful votesthe onzen is split in man's and women's. No mixed bath. The trip from Narita to Nikko can be done when you go by shinkansen, fast train. Go on internet and find the schedule. Or otherwise, stay at a hotel in Tokyo for one night and go further to Nikko next day. It is your holliday, take it easy
Yes, their website states all rooms are non-smoking.
