Our room was facing the road , had dark blinds , no noise disturbance .
Room size is small , one suitcase is sufficient to open and close . Two people in the room will walking over each others feet. Don’t bother to open your second suitcase . Shower and toilet are cruise size small.
At check in was asked to pay “ ONSEN TAX” of 150 yen per person per night . I still don’t know if it was tax or for use . Three ONSENS are on the 13th floor , made three attempts to use it( limited to 30 minutes use) when all three were occupied and few people waiting in line . There is a separate men and women onsens. It’s interesting that the large tubs with rockery decoration and view to the road in front is described as ONSENS. There is no jacuzzi type machinery fitted . Water is warm.
Breakfasts was included in the package catered to the mainly Chinese tourists ( as is the case in Japan) only things western was juice, beverages, breads , sausage , eggs and cereals . Coffee making kettle is provided in the room but never used it for lack of space .
Absolutely no run for me.
It looked like the hotel maybe going through a staff shortage . Hotel is dated and old decor . Though reception was old Japanese style .
Finally it’s strange and for us very first time shoes were to be removed at the reception
Placed in lockers . Walk around with socks. Small complementary socks were provided , left by the lifts. It’s a strange feel walking bare foot with socks. Be careful in lifts area that you don’t have feet injury .
On lifts, Managment should look at a safety feature of doors closing sensors . With multiple people joining into lifts , my wife had door closing on her twice .
I would say ,!it was an average stay and glad to be away .

Takayama Ouen is not intimate, welcoming or in any way a nice Japanese traditional experience. Self-service checkin on machines is your first encounter. Tired and run down space. Stained upholstery. Crowded and chaotic. When I asked at reception what is the best time to get into a private onsen, the reply was,"I don't know, midnight". Lumpy futon beds and a single sucky pillow. Terrible bathroom. Felt like a low grade youth hostel. Was lucky enough to catch an available private onsen (there is no booking system) and it was consistent with my already poor perceptions. The view is awful looking over an ugly scene of the town.
We went for dinner next door, at a beautiful hotel (Mecure Hida) and decided to check availability there. Was worth losing my $ to move out of Takayama Ouen and change to such a superior, beautifully designed and lux hotel which has three lovely garden adorned onsen (for the ladies). The onsen experience is half the reason to come to Takayama and it should be relaxing and joyful (Takayama Ouen is the opposite of that).
Last note- which rattles me completely- these two hotels were the exact same price!!!

Cons -
When we arrived we were disappointed to discover that the hotel is on a busy road with train tracks running behind and it has 167 rooms with minimal facilities to accommodate the relaxing stay promised! This is advertised as a ryokan on some sites and although the rooms may be in that style it is a mega-hotel.
The reception looks like a junk souvenir shop with busloads of tourists coming and going at all hours and we were constantly having to navigate through luggage strewn near the lifts and shoe lockers.
We were told upon arrival that we had to pay 150 yen per day per person to use the onsen facilities, despite paying the high nightly rate just to get a hotel with an onsen. Unfortunately, we were only able to use the onsen once due to the long lines. We did not want to waste our sightseeing time waiting so we decided to try late at night and discovered the lines were just as bad at midnight. As it is first come first served, with the number of guests and lack of booking system it was virtually impossible to get into an onsen (the only reason we booked this hotel).
The one chance we did get to spend in the onsen, it was small and uncomfortable and were unable to enjoy the view of the city due to the mildew on the windows - see attached photo.
Guests and their children were stomping around the hallways and upper levels at all hours.
Breakfast is chaotic and you often have to wait to be seated.
And finally, the wifi just didn't work. Reception staff were unwilling or unable to discuss any of the above issues and dismissed our concerns.
Pros
The room was nice and the breakfast staff did their best to manage the chaos in the morning.
Basically, the worst value hotel we have ever experienced and a huge disappointment after looking forward to our stay in Takayama for months.
