Hagi offers you the most spacious area of hotel room in Japan at this price level. The room was sime but equipped with everything you need like a flat screen TV (though don't know who need to watch a TV in this amazing town) , a bath tub, a comfy futon, super spacious bathroom, and the best part is the private balcony with a view over the mountain and Takayama town. Room was very neat, clean and well-kept by the hotel staff members.
The breakfast was also great in a nice breakfast/dining room with great view. The menus were changed each day during the 3 days we were there. All food was well prepared, fresh and tasty.
The private onsen was something to be mentioned. It was LOVELY!! I imagined it would be quite a damp dirty place but it was actually pretty modern, clean and tidy. The view was also very amazing. You can book in to use for free. Anyway, the public onsen was not worth a visit much as it looked not so clean. The massage chairs were great after a long trip in the day.
Now to the con of the place people mentioned, the location, as we rented a car while traveling in japan, we found the location of this hotel was the best in Takayama. It was just minutes drive into the old town and the parking lot in hotel was free of charge. To be on the mountain gives you a very relaxing atmosphere and unbeatable view. The forest surrounding the hotel was also great for a morning walk. We absolutely love the location of this hotel and would recommend for all guests who have cars or have more days to spend in Takayama. This would not be suitable for a guest who visit the city for just a short time.
The other thing to be mentioned is to make sure you request the room in the same building as the reception office. The rooms in 2 buildings were dramatically different (see photos) the staffs were nice and understanding and tried their best to move us back to the suitable room we booked through booking.com. Thanks for their effort. The rooms in the old building were very small, old, dark, no balcony, full of smell from cigarette and not so clean.
Thank you for a very pleasant stay and a great value you offer. We hope to have a chance to visit again and will be happy to recommend this hotel to anyone.
The ryokan has lovely views of the landscape because its located higher up on a hill. We were treated to beautiful snowy scenes from the large windows around the ryokan, as well as from our 16tatami mat room balcony on the 3rd floor. The whole place is very clean and cozy.
We would like to say a special thank you to Mr. Hiroshi Kawabe for his attentive & helpful service throughout our 5 night stay.
MEALS
Good kaiseki dinners with portions that were just nice for both of us. Tender slices of Hida beef.
Our meals were in the restaurant where great and friendly staff attended to the guests. When we were there during the winter, the latest dinner time was at 7pm. The cuisine was a good selection with very fresh ingredients and they changed the dishes every night for us, which was great.
Breakfast is between 7am-8.30am (that means it ends at 8.30am altho one can sit around for a while till about 8.45am). We are not used to having breakfast so early, but on hindsight it was good to have a much longer day ahead of us if we ate at 7.50am.. Again, very thoughtful of them to change the main dishes during our stay eg it was nice to have 2fried eggs with ham on our 3rd morning.
Breakfast is semi buffet – each of us had our own personal tray of special items and we could also help ourselves to the free flow of beverages, croquettes, salad, porridge etc at the side table.
ONSEN
1. They have a public INDOOR onsen with lovely views on the 4th floor (6am – 9.30am is for men, 3pm – midnight is for ladies). Interesting wall designs in the wash area.
On the same 4th floor is a private onsen bath where reservation and charge is needed. Morning 6am-9.45am are for the men and afternoon 4pm – 11.45pm are for the ladies. We didn’t try it so no comments.
There are another 2 public indoor & attached outdoor onsens near the annex – a short walkway from the ground floor (or a quick dash in the freezing cold). Each bath is interchanged between men and ladies daily. Morning times are 6am-9.30am & 3pm-midnight. We really enjoyed the outdoor rock pool esp with the snowy view.
The dressing rooms in the onsens have a very good selection of toiletries.
SIGHTS
As it was snowing and pretty cold most of the days (around -5 degrees C to 10 degrees C) we were more than contented to stay in, relax, catch up on all our reading, soak in the onsen early, just enjoying the accommodation. The views from the large window panes were lovely.
We did visit the Night illumination of the Hida Folk Museum – blessed with nice clear sky that night – it was an enjoyable outing. The ryokan has its own shuttle that took us there at 7.30pm and fetched us back at 8.20pm.
Pros: High on a hill with lovely views from their large windows. Everything was great for us and we will definitely return again.
Lovely snowy landscapes in winter but a little too cold for strolling. So it depends what you are looking for. This season is great for us because we just want to rest and relax and get away from the noise and hustle bustle back home.
Cons: Its too far to walk down to the little streets. So you will have to depend on the morning shuttle to get down to the little city for your strolls (last shuttle 10am). The afternoon shuttle starts at 3.05pm. In between, you will need to take a taxi.
TIPS: If you are planning on taking a train to Takayama – take note if travelling on a weekend. We came directly from the International airport in Nagoya to Nagoya station on a Friday morning (Feb 15).
Our SIA flight from Singapore landed at 8.30am. We cleared customs and immigration quickly and caught the Sky Express train at 9:07am to Nagoya station.
We reached the Nagoya Train Reservation Ticketing counter at 10.05am and managed to catch the 10:47am Limited Express Wide Hida View to Takayama.
If we had not caught the 10:47am train, we would have had a very very long wait for the 4th train, arriving at Takayama very very late. That’s because the next 3 trains after ours were fully booked.
We arrived Takayama at 1:10pm. The scenery (later half) from the train windows during the journey are pretty scenic. We had lunch at a quaint soba/ramen shop opp the street (get a map from the Tourist Information office just outside the Takayama station).
On our return journey from Nagoya station to the airport – Our flights was 10.30am and we caught the 7:20am Sky Express.
Its really worth paying a little more for the Sky Express train. We noticed that the other trains and platforms were pretty packed by 7.15am.
Not nice!!
Also unimpressed by overall appearance of the public areas; long overdue for update ( peeling wallpaper, marked paint, worn carpet, etc!! )
However our room was large, clean and quiet and comfortable and sleeping on tatami mats a new but quite good experience. Bathroom also large and clean.
Breakfast was very problematic ; I really did not enjoy the Japanese food which seemed to be almost mandatory; I repeatedly tried to explain I really only wanted coffee and fruit but was totally ignored; food was put on the table despite protestations ; very embarrassed to walk away leaving enormous amount of untouched food on the table!! Dont think I will ever come to like pickled vegetables for breakfast. Also the carpet in the breakfast room is really filthy; looks as though its years since it was cleaned properly.
On the positive, all staff were helpful ( except the breakfast people!) The location is superb; great views, walk up the hill really isnt a problem, and if its late at night, its a ten dollar taxi ride ( we soon found the best places to get a taxi in the centre of town). Really loved this town; its small enough to be an easy town for independent travellers, and there is lots of things of interest; four days wasnt long enough!
On balance, I think I would find another hotel, unless management rapidly refresh the decor ; get rid of the kerosene heaters, and solve the breakfast problem!!
So the stay was very nice... until we had to checkout.
On the next morning, I left my suitcase at the reception to go do some hiking around, while my friend was still packing his own stuff in the hotel. The staff seemed to agree with me going back at 12am and pay in cash with my friend. But as I hopped on the bus heading for downtown, I was called back inside the hotel because a staff member thought that I was part of another group of strangers that had already left. As if I intented to leave without paying, leaving my friend and suitcase behind...
When I finally cleared the doubt (the staff is not proficient at all with English), I could finally catch the bus but then my friend called to tell me that the staff forced him to pay for both of and he had to use his credit card, which meant taxes from his bank. Moreover, he paid 11000yen a person while the website listed 10000. He even paid 300 for the onsen which were marked as FREE on the information desk.
So it felt like we were treated as potentiel foreign thieves while being charged more than we were supposed to (and my friend not speaking a word of Japanese just said yes and paid everything). I sent a mail to expose this trouble at the Hotel but didn't get any answer.
All in all even if the place was great, I'm not returning again before the staff gets overhauled in both English proficiency and good manners.
we ended up leaving after one night and left to tokyo- which cost us a lot of money. Booking.com are very disappointing- they didnt give us our money back!
We came from the UK so have little superior knowledge of what to expect, but to us this place was very authentic. Only some exceptions made for the western palette!
The staff were very hard working and attentive.
The hot tubs were great. It is quick and easy to walk to the town. There is a shuttle bus to the hotel from the station.
There is some confusion as to pick up point so be sure to email in advance.
You get a friendly hello, almost cheer when you arrive for breakfast. I loved that!!
Also recommend to visit Hida No Sato village - very interesting and beautiful and only about 3km away - take hotel shuttle to the station and then a bus or taxi to the village...
My room was huge and well-appointed and the view over snow-laden Takayama the following sunny morning was spectacular. So also was the rotenburo, reached through a deep channel carved through the snow.
The meals were fine but not spectacular and the breakfast and dinner dining rooms were pretty plain.
The staff service was excellent as was the shuttle service. I took the shuttle down to Takayama where everyone was digging out and I had a great walk back up the hill. The snow was starting to melt the next day but the whole hotel still looked spectacular, covered in snow.
No wifi or cable in the room so any internet transactions have to be in the bar on the ground floor.
I would certainly recommend and return.
