Great spot for a special couples trip! My wife and I spent 2 nights to celebrate my 30th birthday and had a lovely time.
Our room (6) was gorgeous, especially the sun room with soaking tub. The location of our room made it a little bit noisy being right above reception.
The library in the main house was cozy and we enjoyed playing board games by the fire after dinner.
We had 2 great dinners, including the pasta night and were very impressed with the meals + service. Pasta night was a good deal and lots of fun! We also enjoyed room service which came surprisingly quickly. The desserts & pastries were especially good!
The highlight of our trip was our massages at the spa. Alita gave my wife, who’s getting back surgery next month, the most pain relief that she’s had in months. Kathy also gave a very relaxing massage and informative and intimate astrology reading.
Was a great way to reconnect in a beautiful setting with superb service.
We look forward to hopefully returning in the warmer months!

We made a last minute reservation at Troutbeck to celebrate our anniversary on 11/11. We had a wonderful experience from the moment we arrived to check out. The resort space is beautiful, that goes without saying. But I can't say enough about the staff who go over and beyond to make every guest feel special. Special shout out to Julio and Michele who went out of their way to make sure our stay was perfect. And the food!!! OMG! The food was amazing ~ every single meal was so special. They do amazing things with a plain old egg sandwich, which is not so plain! Everything we had was incredible. We were lucky to be there for Pasta Night and it was one of the most memorable meals we have ever had. The service in the dining room was wonderful. Unfortunately due to scheduling I was not able to indulge in a spa service, but Dineen {sp???}, the receptionist at the spa, also tried very hard to make it work. She was great. We brought our little dog with us and it was a great experience for him also. Dogs are allowed in every part of the resort including a designated area of the dining room. We didn't take him to our meals because our room was roomy enough that he was comfortable staying behind. I can't say enough good things about Troutbeck. We can't wait to go back when the weather is warmer to enjoy the flowers, the pool and I will definitely make sure to enjoy a spa treatment. Thank you, Troutbeck.

Troutbeck is a wonderful place for a relaxing and peaceful retreat from the pressures of everyday life. The property has a powerful and important role in creating equal rights in this country. There are different styles of rooms depending on your needs. We stayed for 3 nights in the Benton Cottage that has 4 bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining room, and a living room. Staff were very welcoming and supportive. Food is delicious. The activities are comprehensive: swimming, massage services, tennis, horseback riding, walking trails, and lovely bar room. The only caution is that nightlife is quiet in the country : no clubs, no raves, no concerts, etc.

First, the setting is magical and everywhere you go, you feel so close to nature. No manicured landscaping – just lots of wildflowers, old growth trees and overgrown shrubs. The main building has an old school, lodgey vibe and the common areas and dining spaces are cozy, comfortable and elegantly rustic. The staff was great – the front desk, room service, restaurant servers were all friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our meals (with our dog) on the deck overlooking the woods and in the breakfast room overlooking the grounds.

The major downside to our trip was our room. We made our reservations last minute and brought a dog, so admittedly our options were limited, but our $900/night room (mid-week) was super disappointing. Our 1st floor interior room facing the parking lot in Benton House felt like a dark, dank well-appointed motel room. The screened porch had dirty floors and soiled furniture in a space that felt more like a crowded entryway than a comfortable lounge space. The room smelled like pee whenever we entered (and before we evidently got used to it) and was dark all the time. The only natural light came from the small window and door looking onto the screened porch, so even on the sunniest day, the room felt like it was in a basement. The bathroom was beautiful, but there was mildew in all the crevices and crumbling caulk all along the counter (that could have so easily been cleaned). Finally, there doesn’t seem to be any noise insulation – we heard toilets flushing, doors slamming, people talking, coughing, arguing, and what we could only guess was someone clog dancing upstairs. Just not our idea of a luxury getaway.

This property has significant potential.

The pluses:
- Really great food at the onsite restaurant
- Located in upstate NY, near NW CT and the Berkshires

What needs to be fixed in order to justify what they charge ($1000 for a small suite; $14 for a cappuccino if you want a double shot espresso):
- some of the rooms are in outer buildings that are in dire need of repair and renovations inside and out
- the rooms in the manor house (main building) have almost no sound insulation with any conversation from the reception or bar area easily traveling up the open staircases into the guest rooms
- hallway and stairway carpet / runners are dirty / stained to the naked eye
- other guests noted bathroom walls starting to cave in / soft to the touch
- overgrown landscaping / grounds largely unkept

I would go as far as saying that the property should shut down entirely for 6-12 months so that it can do an overhaul of its rooms, public spaces, building exteriors, pool / tennis area and grounds.

Overall, a beautiful property with great history and very good food, but a terrible value, and extremely hit or miss service.

The good:

Beautiful, bucolic property, and a relaxing escape from NYC. The hotel has a storied history that really adds to the charm of staying there. Common areas such as the library, bar, and restaurant are cozy and very well styled, mixing an upscale modern feel with classic history of the space.

The food and beverage are very good, with fresh local ingredients. Service at the restaurant was strong and attentive.

Our room was very spacious and well appointed (though not at all worth the nearly $1k price tag).

The bad:

Our first impression of the hotel was being greeted by a receptionist who seemed to have little, if any interest of working in hospitality. We inquired if there was a possibility of checking in earlier than 4pm (hardly an outlandish request when paying nearly $1k per night) and were met with blank stares. The receptionist said they didn’t know where housekeeping was and didn’t offer any other solution. I asked them if they could please contact housekeeping to ask and they tried a single call, and then said sorry, no one is there. We left to have lunch, came back about 2 hours later to try again and received the same unhelpful response, this time with the added “I’ll try to contact you”. When I said there was no cell service on the property and asked how we might be contacted, we received a blank stare.

The property was filled with small children who had been allowed to completely take over the common areas with no regard for other guests. We literally had to step over toys and actual children in multiple common room areas, while carrying our bags, in order to get to our room, all while the hotel staff watched without saying a word. In the restaurant, children were running around, screaming and throwing toys. Food was scattered all over the floor that the staff did not clean up. It’s understandable of course that a hotel will have families and small children, but unacceptable to allow the level of rude disturbance that was happening to other guests.

Finally, the value for the hotel, food and drink is terrible. We paid $1.5k for a single night with breakfast lunch and dinner, including a $350+ dinner. While the food is very good, prices of $55 or more for a small entree (e.g. scallops) is very hard to justify. The same lack of value can be said for the rooms. Although we made a dinner reservation by phone about 2 weeks in advance, the restaurant somehow had no record of it, although luckily we were still accommodated.

We would still take a trip to stay again because of the beautiful property and good food, however there is a lot of work to be done to bring the service, overall experience and value to match with the reputation and visual appeal of the property.

We are at Troutbeck for my sister’s birthday this past weekend. My sister and I don’t drink alcohol and we brought a bottle of nonalcoholic wine to have with dinner. Troutbeck has NA drinks but no NA wine on their menu. The waitress went to check with the manager about the corkage fee. She came back and said she could open the bottle but that they would charge a 45 dollar corkage fee. We said “No thanks” and also expressed our dismay at the exorbitant corkage fee for something that they don’t have on the menu. The waitress went to talk to the manager and got the fee down to 20 dollars which still felt high but at least more reasonable. We were with three other people, all of whom were drinking. We each ordered an entree and an appetizer plus tea and coffee and two desserts. All this to say we were not being cheap. This is not the first time this has happened. Restaurants need to expand their NA offerings or let people BYO without charging such high corkage fees. Until they change their policy I will not go back and will tell everyone I know about this experience.

We had a lovely 4 nights getaway at Troutbeck. The entire stay we felt safe, relaxed, and enjoyed much needed space with nature.

The Pros:
1) The ground and the house is beautiful - if you come here just to be able to walk, breathe, feel free so you don't have to recalulate your route to avoid other pedestrians. This is the place.
2) Clean - the room is so clean! Spotless when we arrive. You can ask for housekeeping if wanted. We didn't and find no need to, spare towels were given and we did make that much mess during the 5 days stay. Only once we took the garbage with some food items downstairs.
3) The team is great, everyone made us felt welcome and catered to (Food and bar is exceptional!) Yes, we are in a pandemic, so sometimes during service it can have some kinks, but we were in no rush and the staff always make it pleasaent for us. I must have bother the receptionist everyday with various questions and they always make me feel I am no bother.

Cons: Sound does travel, whether because it was quieter outside, the upstairs room guests are especially heavy footed at midnight, or it is a historical house with thin walls, just know that you will hear your neighbors.

Overall, if you are expecting a 5 stars hotel and white gloves service, you will most likely be disappointed. Our experience is a nice boutique hotel, with a great food and bar program (4 stars), great team going above and beyond (earning the extra star)! At time service/quality can be a little inconsistent but we are in a pandemic. Pricing for food can be a bit pricey as you don't have a la carte choices and I would not recommend the picnic (it is the idea that's more appealing). Get a nice lunch ordered from the pool and take it to one of the many nice outdoor spots (favorite: Gazebo next to the stream) and you will be happy and relax without the bill scare.

We would love to visit again - thank you Troutbeck Team for giving us the only vacation we have this year! Helping us saved the summer!

We only spent one night. The pool area and pool wait service was great. The room was Ok - clean and large but nothing special. The restaurant was just average p- some items delicious, others not good. The overnight rate is very expensive and does not include breakfast or any real “extras” that I would expect at a hotel/Inn at this price.

Our time at Troutbeck was nothing short of amazing. First of all, the staff was beyond attentive and kind. My boyfriend proposed to me during our stay! I later learned that the staff not only helped coordinate the proposal (flowers, a beautiful bonfire at dusk, prosecco, etc.) but they also introduced my boyfriend to the photographer that took pictures during our surprise engagement. I am pretty sure that every single staff member went out of their way to congratulate us or make us/me feel special (i.e. “Hi, is this the future Mrs. Lee?” or “Please show me your ring!”. I felt so special, especially during COVID, because I knew I wouldn’t have an opportunity like this when we went home. I’d be remiss to mention that each staff member wore a mask at all times and some even wore gloves. They wore the mask properly, not below their nose. We stayed in a property off the main lodge because we brought our dog with us. Though the room was simple (which I loved), it was impeccably clean and inviting. We walked out to our own small deck in the morning and it was just beautiful to look at the estate in the morning. We also very much enjoyed the food during our stay. During dinner the first night, however, we both did not like our main meal because the chicken was prepared in a way that we were not familiar with. Our server noted that we both did not finish our main course and sent us an additional burrata appetizer that we raved about free of charge (we did not ask for it). I thought this was so sweet. She also came up with the most amazing cocktail for me after asking what I liked- I couldn’t even believe how spot on she was?!? The following day, we spoke with another staff member regarding our issue with the chicken. He said that they love to hear feedback so we spoke honestly with him. Troutbeck offered us dinner for two free of charge to make-up for this. I mean, really, how wonderful is that?! Everything else that we consumed there was delicious. Overall, our time at Troutbeck surpassed my expectations (not just because of the engagement). The property is just beautiful, well-kept, elegant, historic and just amazing. We were able to breathe fresh air freely and not worry about anyone being within like 100 feet of us. Thank you to everyone for making the weekend so unforgettable. I truly cannot wait to come back!
