The location of Hotel La Mision is perfect and the exterior of the building is
architecturally pleasing and blends perfectly with the area. Parking is readily available in front of the hotel and there are many restaurants in the area.

The check-in was easy, but you have to arrange as there seems to be no one on site all day. The continental breakfast was very good as was the service.

The reason the for the average rating as the rooms were very small, cramped and not very comfortable.

We have a home in Montevideo and visit Colonia often but had not stayed in Hotel La Mision previously. There are several other posadas in the area that offer a much more pleasant environment and all-day service for the same price.

The hotel has a fantastic location positioned right in the middle of the Plaza Mayor the central square. It is a simple hotel the rooms are basic but have a rustic charm with exposed stone walls and 20 foot ceilings. Our room was on the ground floor and the window was positioned directly onto the square which meant we had to keep it shut and the curtains drawn. The room was clean although small debris kept failing from the ceiling when people walked in the room above (I did mentioned the room was rustic didn't I:) The bathroom was clean, however the tv didn't get any decent recpetion and only one channel. The staff were friendly and the breakfast was okay but basic. A word of warning the hotel only accepts cash for payment which may be a problem as most ATMs are shut early in the morning when you want to check out so plan ahead. When we stayed it was cold in Colonia and we felt the room was quite cold and was in need of a few more creature comforts. It is also expensive for what you get.

This hotel has a lovely website and looks great in photos. In all fairness, the building itself and the courtyard are both lovely. The rooms, however, are extremely bare bones. I think I read somewhere that La Mision was "filled with colonial charm." NOT TRUE. The stone walls are rustic and beautiful, but the rooms are otherwise rundown, damp, and mildewy. The bathroom was just barely adequate (very low water pressure, mildew, etc.). Our room was a huge disappointment, given the photos and description of the hotel posted on the web.
La Mision is fine as an overpriced place to sleep for one night, but it is NOT, in the least, charming or romantic. Colonia is a beautiful and TINY town, so the advantage of being within the walls of the city and on the main square is minimal. Other much nicer hotels are located just seconds away; it doesn't matter that they are outside the city walls and off the main square. Stay somewhere else.

The location of the hotel couldn't be better and it's a short taxi ride from the port, if you take the Buquebus over from Bs. As. The property is very nice and as the name implies it used to be a mission. However, the rooms are pretty rough; reminiscent of the cells the monks stayed in when it was a mission. Our room was somewhat mildewy and the beds pretty soft.

Breakfast was very nice and as mentioned by others the staff was very accomodating. Going back to Colonia, I would look elsewhere before returning to La Mision.

We knew that this was an 18th century house but our travel agent had also told us that it had 'beautiful rooms, .... decorated to compliment the construction ...gifted with modern comforts.' Absolutely not true in our view. The first room we were given was one of the few with a window that opened. But it was so small there was hardly room to open our suitcase flat on the floor. The wardrobe door fell on my husband when he tried to open it and the furniture - although there wasn't room for much - was of the cheapest utility kind.

When we returned from dinner we found the a/c unit was pouring water into the room and on to our belongings (there wasn't room to put them away) and the whole room was damp and clearly unfit to sleep in. We finally found a member of staff who offered us another room. This one was slightly bigger but the bathroom had plaster peeling off the walls and ceiling, the fittings in the shower were very dubious to say the least, and it all smelt damp.

The building looks really pretty from the outside, the staff were delightful and really helpful and the breakfast simple but adequate. The location is great, right on the Plaza Mayor, but the historic centre is very small and there must be better places to stay.

We were on a tour of South america and this was chosen and booked by our travel agent, but we thought we were going elsewhere till 3 days before the trip. This could be a zero or a 5 star rating depending on what is important to you. For us, a family of 3 on a long trip with luggage - it was no good at all. The room - the hotels largest- was 10 ft by 12 ft. With 2 beds in it. There was a small cupboard, with 3 coat hangers in it - but it was not wide enough for the hangers!!! There was no other storage space at all!!! So it was not possilbe to un pack- but there was also no where else to put the cases except on the bed. So getting ready for anything was impossible. Also the room was FREEZING! The heater did not work properly and the single person in charge could no speak English so did not really understand. We did get blankets. Because the room was so small and so cold we had to stay out of the hotel all day and night but to sleep. That would not normally be a problem, but we struggled for things to do in the town of 4 days- only stay 1 night unless you are gong to get a car and explore further afield.

The breakfast was good on the first morning, but got progressivly worse, as things ran out each day.

The hot water did not last long enough for 3 showers- my husband had a cold shower each morning.

The bathroom was tiny and in great need of updating.

The really positive thing was its location. It was right in the old square and perfect. So if you can put up one star accomodation for a 5 star location it might be the place for you. Otherwise I forget it!!

My advice for anyone on a tour would be to do the city in a day trip from BA, and spend extra days either at the Iguasu Falls or on an Estantia!!

What an amazing facade.... beautiful building, in a magnificent old town! But that was where it ended with the room being absolutely disappointing. VERY SMELLY, and very basic, for the price paid, really not worth it. Staff were fabulous, but the breakfast too was not up to much. For the price, not worth the stay... look elsewhere...

As I travel abroad more, I am learning that TripAdvisor definitely has it's limitations. I'm guessing this place was ranked number one because potential guests can use Expedia to book a room, so it isn't necessary to know any Spanish to make arrangements

I saw the price online (via Expedia) but then contacted the property directly and got a lower rate. I speak Spanish, so I could have chosen another place, but hey, this was ranked number one in Colonia on TripAdvisor...

Okay, I haven't stayed at any other hotel in Colonia, so I don't really know....but this just can't be the best place to stay. Yes, location was great. But the room was just not clean enough. When we checked in, at 12:30, the woman said, "check in is at 1, but since the room was almost ready, you can move in". The "almost ready" part might have been a clue.

There was a brown substance (I'm really really hoping it was chocolate) on the table lamp next to the bed. And the bathroom wasn't very clean. There was a lot of mold in the tile grout. The room just didn't feel very clean. And once you see one sign of filth (icky brown substance or mold for example) your confidence in the overall cleanliness of a place tends to wane.

The rooms face an inner courtyard so the windows are covered for privacy. Privacy is good, but lack of light made the room claustrophobic.

The building itself is actually quite interesting with a lot of charm and character, and the included breakfast was fine. It was exactly what you get everywhere in Argentina (oh right, this was Uruguay, but who could really tell the difference).

We wouldn't stay there again because the cleanliness of the room just wasn't good enough for us.

After reading the other reviews, I was afraid to stay in this place. In short, the property is fine. It is in a fantastic location on a quiet street, but within a very easy walk to the river or the main part of town.

The rooms were basic, as other reviewers have noted, but they were clean. Our shower had virtually no water pressure, but it was otherwise fine.

My main complaint would be that the hotel was very overpriced. We paid $75 a night, which was too much for the small breakfast provided and the rustic rooms. $50 would have been more appropriate. In 2008, however, the hotel is raising its rates to $90 for a single/double room, which is severely overpriced.
