As a couple that live in Bali, we have, of course, had recommendations from friends about the nihi sumba.

I’ve been lucky enough to have experienced some of the worlds top hotels and appreciate that it’s a delicate balance to get all aspects correct in a hotel.
I’m happy to say the nihi is well up there in terms of hotels that tick every box to a very high standard.

The price tag is high for Indonesia granted, but for that you get the exceptional, personal, unique service that you would expect for it, the same as anywhere else in the world.
They go the extra mile the entire stay to justify the price tag in my opinion.

I personally felt like no request was too much for them to handle during my stay.

From the moment we arrived at bali airport nihi made sure we didn’t have to lift a finger, they collected our bags and handled the entire check in process for us and even escorted us to the boarding gate. We had the same service when we landed which made the airports experience an unexpected breeze.

Once we arrived, our captain Maxi was extremely attentive and made sure we wanted for nothing.
From getting me medicine when I wasn’t feeling great, to helping us time our day so we could get the perfect pictures of horses galloping down the beach, maxi took care of everything.

A lot of hotels boast a ‘butler’ service, but I feel the nihi really takes its meaning to a very literal level to the extent that you have someone who is literally there to make your stay as easy, relaxing and enjoyable as possible.

The rooms managed to completely nail an authentic sumbanese vibe whilst still having modern fittings, features and comforts that you’d get in a city hotel. The air con was crisp and cold, the sheets soft and not damp (quite common when a hotel uses the authentic straw type roofs) and I didn’t see one bug in the room the entire time. I felt comfortable for the duration.
There are numerous room types and all seem to offer their own unique design and ‘instagrammable’ features, again adding to the unique experience so the guest knows they’re getting something different than anyone else in the hotel.

Unfortunately I wasn’t feeling great during my stay so didn’t get to sample as much of the food as I’d have liked and kept my meals on the bland side. But what I did eat tasted fresh and tasty and also had a very high class appearance to them.

Personally, the main hook with the nihi for me was the content I wanted to get for my social media pages. Horses galloping down a deserted beach was something I had to document on my IG 😂. Again, nihi delivered on the content side of things, they arrange these personal experiences for you and make them as content friendly as possible as I’m sure it benefits them to have guests posting jaw dropping pictures and videos, they even have an in house photographer who knows all the best shots and locations to get you whatever content you need.

Anyway, great stay!
We shall definitely be back to see the horses and the awesome team again soon❤️

One sentence: absolutely stunning! One of the best luxury hotels I have ever visited. Anyone looking for the highest level of comfort, privacy, beautiful nature, a little adventure and culture will be delighted. The somewhat longer journey (from Bali with Wings/Lion Air to Tambolaka, Sumba) is definitely worth it. There is hardly any tourism on Sumba, let alone infrastructure. The island is very traditional, people live in simple accommodations and some ancient villages. Tradition, festivals and ceremonies characterize the picture. The island has dream beaches with the perfect left-hand wave: surfers become and are enthusiastic. The Nihi is located on a long dream beach surrounded by rainforest. I couldn't get enough of the view and scenery. For me, the perfect scenery: turquoise water, light sandy beach, lush green jungle, no buildings in sight. The villas are designed in a traditional style (externally) and are even more beautiful inside than in the photos. Extremely spacious, I love the outdoor shower, everything is high quality and new, a fantastic view and you fall asleep to the sound of the sea (thanks to the perfect surfing wave on your own beach). The team is incredibly friendly, the butler service works perfectly. Many thanks also to the surf team at the boathouse, who got me hooked on surfing more, to Lina and her yoga lessons in the morning and also to the spa team and the guides who hiked with us. Speaking of spa: this is remote from the resort in a fantastic spot with a beach bay, surrounded by rice fields and a wonderful view with a fantastic massage. Spa safari is a must! You can also do an incredible number of activities, in addition to sports such as surfing, horseback riding, hiking, and also visit the Sumba Foundation Projects set up by Nihi. The culture is definitely worth getting to know. The food is delicious and also offers many healthy options. Thank you very much Nihi Sumba for this piece of paradise

This hotel cannot be compared to any other on earth.... and my wife and I travel extensively.....and really expect Aman type service.

The premise of the hotel is to really help the local community... and so far they have helped 45,000 people.....

It feels as if you are at the end of the earth.... and you are... there are no nearby hotels.... and the structures have been crafted over 25 years to hug the mountainside...... heads up, there are steps everywhere, and lots of them..... but that is part of the fun!!! Secret paths everywhere!

Our villa was huge, with a giant copper round bathtub... a large outdoor pool and sitting area... and then down a stone path.... another private daybed endless ocean vistas everywhere...

We have trouble describing the hotel in normal terms.... it is more like an unbelievably high end Africa Safari Camp....... the food is spectacular... how they manage to get so many options here is beyond us... fresh salmon sushi? no problem... the best Indonesian food.. no problem.... the best western options... no problem..in fact any request is no problem. A bit of Veuve Clicquot Brut .....they make it happen... But what is so special is that many of the staff are being trained and come from the local villages... and they do spectacular....we started listing names... and we had to stop, because each and every staff member, was always happy to assist with anything... and because of the unique opportunity.. their hearts are happy, and this echoes throughout the resort....

We did a spa safari, and it was the most amazing experience of its type we had ever had... it was as if we were transported to Bali before Tourist...[this is true of the entire hotel]...

We rode with horses in the ocean..... and I had surf lessons.... each experience amazing and with patient and kind staff.

While trying to avoid an endless list, a special thanks to Maxy and Vikry our butlers..... and to each and every employee that made this so utterly one of a kind. Housekeeping and Laundry flawless....There was not a single employee who we would not want to hire for our own business... thats how incredible they were. We were here 8 days, and will come back soon.

Special added thanks to Evalyn Rhia and all the horsemen and their care.. Moria !! To awesome Adam, who tolerated my surfing lesson with patience and a smile Thanks to the spa folks... Freya and Rainy.. and Yena... Mariana and the healer from India Vijaya. To Satria the GM well done! I'In Farida, Petronella, Mary... Hooray! and to the talented Philip, a singer of endless range... wow.

I apologize for the spelling of many of the above names...:)

I just finished a 4 night stay and I was very impressed. I had doubts it would live up to the hype but all the merits this resort receives are true and well earned! Nihi is a VERY special place.

First, the service you receive is unparalleled with any other property I've stayed at. From the start of your travels all the way through the end you are catered to. I had many great interactions with the staff while there but Simson the guest captain, Aris in the lunch restaurant, and Agus the surf and water activity guide were really really great and made the trip that much better. Any request we had, small or outlandish was granted during our stay. Its hard to describe it without experiencing it but every single one of the staff seem to really love what they do and get joy from helping the guests.
We even had a small issue with some miscommunication over COVID travel regulations when leaving and Madlen and her team handled it with ease, keeping the short remainder of our stay pleasant and stress free.

The food is inclusive with the room rate and all three meals come from an extensive menu and if it isn't on the menu the kitchen can create something for you. Every meal we had was amazing with things imported from off island or grown in their organic garden or directly from the sea. Really impressive what they can do in their kitchen, considering there is so little development on the island.

The villas are also perfect, tropical and modern design with big bathrooms and lounging areas. Super clean and really quiet. We never heard another guest or any of the staff the entire time we were in our villas.

The most impressive part of the whole Nihi experience are the beach and ocean. Its located directly on a sprawling white sand beach with no one on it and the energy and beauty of it are indescribable. The water is crystal clear (the hotel is very close to plastic free so there isn't one piece of rubbish on the beach or in the ocean) and stunning. Theres a great surf break right in front thats private to the hotel and super fun.

The hotel has many great scheduled activities to keep you or your children busy or you can just lounge in the different areas of the hotel doing nothing depending on what type of traveler you are.

Cannot recommend this hotel enough its truly one of a kind!

Our this year's journey through Indonesia took us from Bali, to Java, then cruising through the Komodo national park with finally landing on Sumba, everything organized on a top level. Therefore, we were a bit sceptical when being told that on one of the poorest Indonesian islands we would enjoy a stay at one of the best hotels on our trip. But we were really positively surprised!
NIHI Sumba is a fabulous place! Our Lamba 01 villa was a dream: spacy, perfectly furnished, great bathroom with outside shower, private garden and infinity pool.
We enjoyed great dinners at the three different restaurants with a wonderful cuisine nicely balanced between international and local dishes, and a Mexican flavour due to the chef's origin. Once - for an extra payment - we had a wonderful private dinner just for the two of us served at our villa.
That leads me to the service: the hotel assigns a guest captain to all visitors as central point of contact to all guests. Via WhatsApp that this person is available practically 24/7. The responsiveness of our captain, Petrus, was outstanding! But also, the service from the invisible housekeeping to waitresses and waiters, barkeepers, guides, staff for all activities was super. We also were very much impressed by the active presence and direct approachability of the hotel's top managers.
Staying at Nihi Sumba is not a "cheap undertaking", however, it is worth it. This not only for the services you get, but also for social investment you make. The hotel is the biggest employer on the island and is the major contributor to a foundation for supporting health and education of more than 40.000 people of Sumba.

Simply the best place I've been in my life. Nihi Sumba is, without exaggeration, the perfect definition of paradise. All the details are perfect, the staff made us feel super loved, they are attentive to all the details and always transmitting positive energy. I have never been treated so well, I am also super grateful to Sarah Jane and Melisa and the staff behind the surprise they organized for us!
Sarah (F&B manager) and her husband Maurice (Chef) were simply charming from our first day, in addition to their hospitality we loved meeting them, they made us feel like lifelong friends.
There is no price for what Nihi Sumba gives to they're guests.

A big greeting to the entire Nihi Family! I'm already looking forward to returning again.

We stayed at Nihi for 6 days, we wanted to discover Sumba and Nihi is basically the only choice of luxury hotel on the island.
We stayed in Lulu Amahu 1.

Resort
Absolutely stunning grounds, the gardens around the villas and the resort are well kept and very beautiful. The beach is great too although it’s not a great beach for swimming due to the rocks and usually big waves. It is good for surfing though.
There are plenty of activities such as horse riding, tours, turtle releases, spa day, Chocolate factory, … You will not get bored.
Also liked the wildlife on the resort grounds.
We did a sunset horse ride which was really nice, visited the Sumba foundation and did a big tour around West Sumba.

Staff
All staff were great, our Guest Captain Sarny was excellent. She helped us with everything we needed and always promptly replied to our queries. 5 Stars for Sarny !

Food
Again no complaints, every meal we ate was excellent. The breakfast, lunch and dinner were usually A La Carte but we did have a buffet also on some days. Even the pick-nick basket given on excursions is super nice ! None of us got sick so the food hygiene at NIHI is excellent. Really well done
on the food NIHI!

Rooms
While generally the villas are nice, there are few areas to improve in my opinion.
For our villa there was occasionally an unpleasant smell from the bathroom. The curtains aren’t blackout so you’ll wake up early. The outdoor bathtub ran out of hot water before it even was halfway full. Other than that, the rooms are big, mostly clean and we did appreciate the mosquito net and the amenities. We also liked the zero use of plastic. The sundeck/pool/gardens were great and the view incredible.

Price/quality I believe it’s still expensive, the only reason to justify the price is the fact they spend money on the greater good of the island and its population through the sumba foundation. They provide jobs, healthcare and education. They are also cautious about the climate (No plastic, own grown garden) and support the environment (Turtles). Its worth once to splurge on this resort and Sumba is a beautiful island to visit. Do some tours, don’t stay all day at Nihi ! You will have a great stay, the resort is no doubt excellent.

We are just back from Nihi Sumba and we are already making plans to come back !!

The experience starts at Bali airport with a team helping our family with boarding and making our way through the airport. At Tombolaka we have been warmly welcomed and driven directly to the hotel, while the team takes care of your luggage and pick them up at the airport.

The hotel itself is breathtaking in many ways, the location, the views, the level of service and kindness, the activities (treks, surfing, fishing, visits...) etc.
The 2,5km long beach is a pure jewel.

It is also a family friendly place and our kids enjoyed their stay there so much !

It is definitely worth crossing the world (and take 3 flights !) to come there and we hope to have the opportunity to visit again.

Thanks a lot to the fantastic Nihi team !

Our 1st time to NIHI Sumba and it has left us speechless. Their tagline 'On The Edge of Wildness' couldn't be more true. Aside from the herds of horses and water buffalo on the beach, the isolated setting and immense surf gives the feeling of being a million miles away.

The food has been exquisite, the service - a product of the brilliant Sumba Foundation, has been next level, and the 2 dedicated butlers in a group chat with my family, have bent over backwards to attend to our every need.

The Nihioka Spa Safari is simply breathtaking and worth every single penny. No other spa on Planet Earth comes close.

Have enjoyed playing Padel on their brand new court, the kids loved the chocolate making and the entire Christmas experience has been one that we will never ever forget.

There's only 1 recommendation that I hope Sabine and her team will take to heart... Please never change what you have created. It is perfect in every way.

Truly unique and until now unimaginable experience. At every turn during our stay, we felt like we had experiences that were greater than anything we imagined.

The accommodations were exceptional. Authentic, well maintained and thoughtfully laid out to maximize emersion into the surrounding environment. Dining options were broad and fantastic, offering a taste of local cuisine as well as other options to meet and exceed expectations those with tastes for other things from around the world. The accommodations, amenities and food were enough to set Nihi apart for us alone but that was not the only thing that made the trip so amazing.

The people are what really took the experience from over the top to out of this world. Our concierges were amazing at educating, informing and enabling us. We engaged in activities in the water and with the horses on land and were enabled by an amazing and very experienced talented staff. We engaged in yoga and at the spa for wellness treatments, and all experiences were second to none. We were fortunate to have been there at a time when the renowned photographer Jason Wolcott was in-residence at Nihi. To have someone like Jason capturing images of our experience was unimaginable and amazing. Lastly, it seemed like most of the staff from dining to housekeeping to even some of the groundskeepers took the time to engage us which was a great personal side to the trip we would not have imagined.

We were truly honored to have been enabled by the world class watermen (from Tropicsurf and the watermen on Nihi staff), equestrian team, yoga instruction, wellness staff and the photographer/artist Jason Wolcott. We were excited to have had the chance to get to know others on staff at Nihi including some of their experiences. Tip for other travelers - Engage and share with the staff things you'd like to do, put yourself in their very capable hands and you'll be amazed at the experiences you will have.

Wamoro or Lantoro 1bm villa. Which one is better? Differences?
Answer from Madlen Ernest
Sumba, Indonesia
Thank you for reaching out to us Maciek405, both are unique villas in their own individual way. The Wamoro 1 Bedroom villa is a duplex villa, with the living room on the top and the master bedroom on the bottom. Therefore this villa gives a lot of space. the Lantoro 1 Bedroom villa is a single floor villa, convenient and compact. if i can assist any further or you like to talk with us personally in regards to villa options, do not hesitate to reach out to me or my team. Unfortunately i can not post my e- mail address on here for you. But you can reach out through the website to us directly. Have a great day Madlen

Thank you for your question EC2007, Depending on the age of your kinds i have following recommendations for you, If kids are younger then 10 years old, I would recommend LULU Amahu 2 bedroom villa for you, perfect if kids are smaller to have them close by but enough space to enjoy a good time together. If your kids are adults i would recommend any of our Estate 2 Bedroom villas, such as Lantoro, Wamoro or Kasambi 2 bedroom Villa. Those villas give a lot of space and privacy. I hope my recommendation is helpful , Best regards madlen

You’ll love Nihi!!! But I would contact the hotel directly about the best villa. Ours was spacious with both an upstairs and downstairs bedroom for just the two of us.
