Ciliks Beach Garden (CBG), Air Sanih, Northern Bali: Privately owned, Individual Beach Villas in an Exclusive Garden Resort at the North-East Coast of Bali At a two hectare large beach location Ciliks Beach Garden (CBG) offers very individual and spacious villas of different size in private, well-tended tropical gardens right by the sea. The thoughtfully planned, open, airy construction of the Balinese-style houses considers the climate and blends into the beach landscape; this creates a pleasant ambience for eye and soul. Generously designed, elegant living- and bedrooms, bath rooms partly opened to the sky, and large terraces offer the possibility to combine life inside and outside, in the house and in the garden. Each house has its own garden pavilion and an additional terrace right at the beach; attentive hotel service, Western-style breakfast, selected Balinese cuisine, freshly-caught fish. To visit cultural performances, to explore Bali by car or the coast by boat and for many more suggestions, see below. And back at Ciliks Beach Garden you'll enjoy the quiet surrounding and your privacy in this well-maintained resort.

What really blew this place out of the water was our dining experience. Their menu is perfect and the meals are delectalbe with the most incredible view overlooking the sea. We were spoiled rotten. The outdoor shower also really added to our overall experience. My only concern, our accommodation was open to mosquitios and even with nets and repellent we were badly bitten. The rooms could use protective netting instead of the footlong aperture above its door. The staff and service were fantastic and every day we were brought a complimentary snack with tea or coffee. We booked a driver to visit a Buddhist Temple and also ventured out to the Holy Hot Springs Public Swimming baths. We sadly didn't get to see dolphins but that may have been due to my nerves on the boat as my son cannot yet swim (headed back maybe a little too prematurely). We were a little upset by neighbours who dragged their sun-beds to outside our door on the penultimate day but luckily a member of staff moved them back ( this could've been really unpleasant had we stayed longer). I would advise that you ask the staff to keep others beds where they should be if it bothers you. However, an unforgettable stay with a constant supply of Bintang in the fridge and a beautiful pool area.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a long review. We are very happy that you enjoyed our food so much. Our kitchen is very important to us. Since you order your dinner every day shortly after breakfast, everything is freshly bought and prepared - and you can taste it. As a tip for your next trip to the tropics: in addition to the repellents in the socket, take a spray for your skin. We have had good experiences with Nobite. It's nice that you have felt so comfortable with us. Thank you for your stay!

This place is a gem. We usually stay in the south of Bali at larger hotels, but decided to try the north this time and so glad we did.

Cilik’s is a small resort – only 4 villas set in beautiful gardens – and run by locals.

Absolute beach frontage and absolute privacy. The owners/staff treat you like their family – nothing is a trouble.

The villas are luxurious / rustic. No air conditioning but there is a sea breeze and ceiling fans. Huge rooms, we were in Villa West and had two king size beds, separate small dressing area and storage and an attached, partially outdoors bathroom (down a couple of stairs so no good if you have mobility issues.

We also had a large balcony where we were served an early morning tea or coffee, our own private dining pavilion overlooking the Bali Sea and our own private lounging area also overlooking the sea and just a short walk to the swimming pool.

The food is amazing and inexpensive - thank you to the wonderful cooks! You order what you want in the morning and they buy or catch it fresh for you. We ate off the menu which was great – lots of fish and Balinese specialties, but I’m sure you could order anything you wanted.

You can do walks in the area and also arrange to do different tours. We went to a waterfall and the water palace and there were other options - boat trips and snorkelling. Massages were available and again, not expensive for the high quality.

Being there was like Bali as we remembered it 30 years ago. Everyone friendly and welcoming, nobody hassling you and so much life and colour happening all around. Special call out to everyone who made our stay so memorable - Ketut, Nyoman, Made, Gede and of course Cilik and his son, Jersen.

This would not suit anyone looking for nightlife, but if you want to get away from it all and be treated so specially and experience beautiful Bali then this is an ideal small resort. We stayed for five days but will stay two weeks next time.

This review has rarity value and great importance. It is Corona time and the Indonesian borders are closed for international tourism. Only people who have already been to Bali can travel. Therefore we are very happy that we had you as our guests and especially that you felt so comfortable. Obviously our hygiene concept convinced you and you have some distance on our huge plots anyway. So thank you very much for your stay and for your positive feedback. Please feel free to recommend us to others.

We stayed at Ciliks Beach Garden for three nights in the East Villa. We loved the location, the beautiful garden and lovely scenery. The staff is also warm, friendly and helpfull, but the hotel is lacking some basic comfort which its price (EUR 165 a night including tax) would require.

First of all, its an outdoor and open construction. This means bugs are everywhere (ants, lizzards, spiders, mosquitos etc). Off course I understand this is Bali and this might be part of the charm. But for 165 euro a night I wouldn't expect them to bother me during my sleep. Especially as we stayed in other hotels where they did not have this problem. Mainly the ants are a pain since they're also in your bed and keep you up. A good suggestion would be to fill up the air holes with some sort of netting. this way fresh air can come in and bugs stay out. No clue what to do about the ants though, but as this is the only hotel in Bali where I had this problem, there should be something to fix it.

Second, the beds are way below par quality. They are dead hard, and no more than upgraded bamboo beach beds. They gave me a serious backpain and I have hardly slept for three nights. In addition, they are small and not big enough if you're over 1.80m.

Finally, which again doesn't match the hotel's price, they don't accept credit and/or debit cards. All-in we had to pay (for three nights) ~7.8mln rp (~700 euro) cash... Which is inconvenient considering the closest atm was a 30 minute drive away and the highest withdrawal from such an atm is 1.5-2.0 mln.

Overall, if you're into camping or love to stay close to nature and don't mind bugs, this is a great place. But despite their 4-5 star prices, don't expect to stay at a 4-5 star hotel. If you expect some basic comfort (ie decent bugfree bed and bugfree (bath)room), don't go here.

Entgegnung auf den Gästereview vom 3. Sept. 2013 „Great location, but overpriced and not for everyone” Gästebewertungen sind immer willkommen, natürlich auch, wenn sie kritisch sind. Mail erreicht: „Everything worked out perfectly! Warm regards from our beautiful veranda overlooking the ocean. Eduard” Das wird also honoriert – Danke ! Doch dann „the Hotel is lacking some basic comfort which its price would require“, und genannt wird als Preis pro Nacht „including tax 165 Euro“, was eine mehr als 10 Euro zu hohe und somit falsche Angabe ist, doch ich will nicht kleinlich sein. Weiter: “First of all: I’ts an outdoor and open construction.”- ‘Outdoor’?? Come off it ! Doch ‘open’ - oh yes, that’s true, of course! Weiter: „This means: bugs are everywhere (ants, lizards, spiders, mosquitos etc.)” „Great location, not for everyone“ Ja! Urgently needing some R&R and me-time I came across Cilik's Beach Garden and booked a villa for 2 weeks.

Do go there if: you like fabulous Balinese food, excellent employees who can give many a suggestion regarding Bali, lush vegetation with jackfruit, pineapple and banana trees, breakfast in your "own property" about 15m from the sea, peace and quiet and the sound of the waves on the beach.

Don't go there if: you want loud music, a white instead of a black/grey sandy beach, if you need your fix of pizza, a lot of action and so on. You better stay in Kuta or similar places.

The three cooks or rather kitchen goddesses will provide you with excellent food, whether you wish for vegetarian, fish, pork or chicken, with spices for a rather European palate or then people who like their food nicely hot and full of flavour of galangal, lemon grass, coriander seeds, chilis and so on. As an aperitif I would recommend Brem, a drink I could have downed by the bucket. Brem is made from a lightly fermented special rice, topped with lemon juice and a bit of ginger, pure health and very tasty and moreish at that.

For breakfast I very strongly recommend the following (obviously only for people who can stomach spicy food and rice in the morning): first breakfast with some fruit salad (oranges, bananas, jackfruit and so on) with a cup of the excellent Bali coffee, then, when the kitchen gets into gear, some rice and vegetables or whatever takes your fancy at around 10. You will not be disappointed.

As I needed rest I didn't do much, just watched the ships on the horizon, the fishing boats, read, talked with the employees about Bali and thought about dinner or the coming snack. I couldn't be bothered to make any specific selection in the morning so I left the selection to "the ladies" of the kitchen and they never disappointed me.

I will go back in the not so far future and intend then to see more of the north of Bali which for me has a much nicer feel than the south with its accompanying noise and cheap beer promos

I had rented 3 out of the four villas at Cilik's in February 2012 for 3 nights. Let me start with the positives. The grounds are beautiful, the food is fine and the staff seemed nice. The villas themselves are a bit shabby. Villa West (where I stayed) had cobwebs and the additional 'room' was dank, musty and unusable. More importantly, these are not enclosed structures - they have open clerestory windows that allow many bugs in. I get that it's Bali and there are bugs, but it was problematic. Also, there are only fans in the villas and the heat (in February and on the water) was still unbearable. The two women who were in the Octagon left after one night to stay at Shangrila Oceanside Retreat down the road. They couldn't handle the bugs and had lizards all about their room. I also rented out the Lumbung, but I didn't want anyone to stay in there after viewing it. The stairwell was so steep and dangerous, I had visions of someone falling down the stairs in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. The whole place left me with a 'one step up from camping' vibe.

Responded 2 Jun 2012

What can one say about Cilik's?
That
the team is absolutely wonderful
the gardens and houses are a dream come true
the view to the ocean is a bliss for the soul
the masseur is a true "life saver"
the food is delicious and always fresh
and
the boat trips and dolphins will remain in your heart forever

But wiser perhaps to keep all this (and much more) a secret

Beautiful garden, beautiful people and yes beautiful food. This place has everything for a good and relaxed stay on Bali. Far away from the hassle in the south, you see true bali life (if you step out of the garden) but you can alsco simply stay here just a few days staring at the sea, enjoying the delicious food and read all the good books they have (most in german..).
We stayed in the cheapest bungalow, Lumbung, which is still very tasty decorated, with open bathroom and house gecko. This bungalow is close to the somewhat busy road, but most of the time the sound of the waves made us forget the rest.

Finally, we want to join the chorus of all those being enchanted by Ciliks Beach Garden. With great surprise, we read the comments of vacationers staying in Villa East shortly after we'd left (stayed from July 30 to August 8, 2013). I would like to respond, since this comments give a completely wrong picture:

Yes, this is Bali and that's why you are there.
Yes, they build the villas in an open traditional style - like many Hotels in Bali - and this garantuees perfect climatization during day and night. All beds are equipped with mosquito nets, and using them properly, we never found bugs in the bed. Since we are returning "lovers" of CBG, we appreciated the exchange of the former traditional futons into very comfortable matresses. So I cannot comprehend making a point about not sleeping. There are two large beds in the main room, which should also fit tall persons.
Yes, we also had ants in the bathroom, but this is "correctly mentioned" an wonderful outdoor bathroom. I'm sure the staff would have taken care, if you'd let them know that the ants did bother you.
For logistic reasons of onward travel, we stay close to the airport in one of the super-expensive hotels on Nusa Dua: Closed doors and windows, air conditioned ice-cold and an ant street - the biting very small kind - right along the wall.
Lizards - Geckos - are completely harmless friendly animals hunting bugs (for you) and are found just everywhere. You do not want to miss them!

Mentioning the price, the captious critic forgot to mention that you rent a large, spacious villa. A huge, tastefully furnished and decorated room with two queensize beds, desk (WLAN), and an extra room for children/additional guests, which has air condition, safety box and storage; the already mentioned wonderful (enclosed) bathroom; a furnished and protected terrace and a huge garden stretching to the ocean with an own beach, an own bale. Not to mention the great cooking they do! And the staff is simply special.

All this is mentioned also on their website, including that they take only cash. So you should be prepared.

If you love camping; go there and you'll never use your own tend. If you love Hotels also visit and you always want to come back.

My wife and I stayed in the Oktagon cottage for 4 nights at the end of our honeymoon. Cilik's was the perfect place to unwind and experience North Bali before heading back to our work-a-day lives.

Cilik's is located right on the black-sand north coast of Bali. Each bungalow on the property has its own garden, beach chairs, and roofed pavilion with an eating table and chairs. The beach consists of a series of thin black sand strips and stone jetties. Although it is not a picturesque, expansive, white-sand beach, the water was very clear and generally quite pleasant to swim in. The views across the water were incredible at sunrise and sunset, as the property looks directly out over the open ocean.

Our bungalow -- like the rest of this wonderful property -- was quite unique and tastefully done. The floor to ceiling windows offered great views of the water and the well-kept gardens in our quadrant. The beds, bathroom, and mosquito nets were all clean, well-maintained and perfectly functional. The gardener/housekeeper, Wayan, kept both the house and grounds in great shape.

Meals were a real highlight at Cilik's. They were all very reasonably-priced, fresh, and delicious. All the fish we had was caught freshly that day, and the kitchen staff was more than happy to accommodate our craving for spicy food. Homestyle Balinese cooking is really a delight, and this is a great place to experience it. The kitchen staff did a great job of assembling diverse breakfast and dinner menus. At the Ketut's invitation we visited the kitchen -- located near the main house on the property -- one night during dinner preparation. This was a fun visit, and recommended if the invitation is extended.

Other than relaxing and swimming on the grounds, we took a sunrise boat trip with Nyoman one morning. He tracked down a large school of dolphin and tuna, as well as some spectacular views of Gunung Agung and the verdant headlands of north Bali. We also did some snorkeling in the area just east of the property. The reef and fish were a bit underwhelming after spending a week in south Lombok, but it was still nice for being so close to the property. Our only other formal activity was a hike to the nearby waterfalls with Gede. This is a great way to see the countryside on the interior if you do not have your own vehicle.

Aside from the tranquil location, the staff and owners are what make this unique property so special. They are very welcoming and accommodating without suffocating your privacy. The staff to guest ratio seems to be about one to one, so you will be well attended-to. The staff/owners are eager to get to know you, and provide recommendations for activities based on your interests.

This small resort strikes a great harmony with the under-developed north coast. Motoring along the coast it is hard to distinguish Cilik's from other locally-owned villas and homes: a stark contrast from south Bali and Ubud. We would definitely come back here, and recommend this resort to our friends and family.
