Off the beaten track, in the foothills that fringe the north coast of Bali, Villa Manuk is surrounded by beautiful countryside, tucked away in an idyllic valley of terraced rice fields. Backed by mountainous hills and forest, it is the ideal place for nature lovers who wish to discover the country life of Bali. Here life moves at a gentle pace. Paths meander through the rice fields, a tiny village, and around the valleys, following the contours of the hills. Nestled just outside the village at the top of the valley, looking out over (rice) fields, is Villa Manuk. The comfortably appointed bedrooms open onto large verandahs with views over the adjoining fields to the hills beyond. Comfortably furnished, the verandahs are perfectly secluded, ideal for relaxing with a book, sketching or writing. Just a short drive from Villa Manuk to the East, through the villages of Sawan and Bebetin, is the beautiful Sekumpul Waterfall, which makes a wonderful trek. And many more. Enjoy your stay.

Villa Manuk is finally open for guests again. It was not my first stay here and it was pleasant and relaxing as always. Lovely staff, good food (you can order now from the auntie next door), beautiful view, refreshing spring water pool and great Balinese massages. Bali‘s tallest waterfall, Sekumpul, is located just nearby. The villa is also a good starting point for trekking tours or walks in the rice paddies.

Probably the most stunning sunset I have ever seen ☺️ Amazing tranquility. Super friendly and competent staff. The area with the rice fields and volcanic mountains around the villa was fantastic. Great walk to the Waterfall. We loved our stay 👍

In our whirlwind tour of Bali in Jan-Feb,'09, we were lucky to find a brochure for Villa Manuk, a relatively new eco-lodge set amidst rice-fields and overlooking the mountains in the north of Bali. The owners, Beate and Nyoman, also own the Warung Bamboo restaurant in Lovina. The villa is divided into two levels with a room and a veranda on each level. We stayed there for two wonderful nights, waking up each morning to roosters in the village and a sumptuous breakfast on the veranda (with the best black rice pudding we had in all of Bali !) brought in by Gede and Made, the house-helps, from Lovina. We took a morning walk in the nearby village meeting and chatting with the friendly locals - the only time in our trip we felt we were doing something non-touristy and getting close to the real life of the Balinese. The afternoon was spent motorbiking down to the Sekumpul waterfalls (spectacular !), a gamelan workshop (hand-made gamelans - brass cast in a coal-fired furnace, hammers used to beat them into shape, grinding, final polishing for acoustic performance), Dewi Sri temple (beautiful temple honoring the goddess of fertility and rice). The room was very comfortable and the we spent quite some time on the veranda day-bed just looking out into the fields and the jagged mountains. Did I mention the outdoor shower ? The staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was great and overall the place was excellent value for the money. Beate & Nyoman were wonderful hosts. They are into sustainability and permaculture and are initiating a project to provide funding for the education of the children of the village.

If you love Bali. If you detest mass tourism in Bali. If you want to experience an authentic village in the rain forest, "far from the maddening crowds". And above all, if you like remote, small, personal, comfortable bordering on luxurious, whether your budget is crazy huge or woefully small, the Villa Manuk is still for you. There are only 2 villas with 4 separate rooms, great healthy food, a springwater-filled pool if you must swim and tan. Come with your family or friends and take over the whole place. Even in the rainy season it's a delight.
If you come to write, read, or just dream; if you come to walk, talk, explore (the local village, the rain forest). The Villa Manuk satisfies these inclinations like few other hotels I know, and I've been traveling for nearly 50 years.
Edward O. Wilson wrote: "The longing for odesseys and adventures and faraway places is in our genes". And he added: "The meaning of our life...is in our actions". I'm sure the Villa Manuk goes along way to proving both these statements true.
Whether you are a star or a rich business person, or a simple person like me, cycling around the Sunda islands, the Villa Manuk is worth a few relaxing days, a few days in Paradise re-found.

Although the weather was not always perfect, villa Manuk was a great place to unwind. We ended up extending our stay just because it was perfect for us. If you have your own car as we did it makes staying @ villa Manuk for more than 2 days more enjoyable. The place is surrounded by nature and working farmland, you can see the locals going by their day as day have done of years in Bali far away from the tourists at Lovina.
Location: Set in a Balinese small village surrounded by nature and farmland. Unspoilt great views from the upper floor rooms, true Bali feel and no tourists in miles.
Getting there: You need a local to take you there, a gps or a good map, although signage is provided around 5km from the property.
Property/rooms: 2 separate buildings with 2 rooms in each building, traditional Balinese style, good beds, day bed, table chairs on own private balcony. Bathroom with shower, open air. Good beds, mosquito nets and mosquito repellent available. 2/3*
Garden,: Beautiful garden with exotic plants, fish pond and fresh water pool, deckchairs and patio/restaurant area.
Food: Superb food from the owners restaurant in Lovina ( Warung Bamboo) is delivered to the Villa, great breakfast with organic and bio options.
Pro/con: Remote, only the sounds of nature and village life, nice atmosphere, very nicely designed, no tv, aircon minibar etc. the basics well done. No tourist nightlife. Wonderful waterfalls near by, great place to take walks and shoot photo’s. Great staff.

My husband and I booked the Bambu Ground Floor Double Room at Villa Manuk for one night in Jan 2013 for $64 USD (cash only) with booking.com. Breakfast cost an additional $6.50 per person. As the hotel is in a fairly remote location we also booked dinner in advance. Even with our local driver, written instructions and GPS I have to say Villa Manuk was hard to find and the last few kms of roads were poor. We phoned from a few villages away and were guided to the last village where a young man on a motorbike met us to take us the last distance to the Villa. It was definitely worth the effort as it was beautiful there! Our luggage was taken from the car into the villa for us and a lovely welcome drink provided. The property is in a gorgeous rural setting – no internet here, cash only. I swear I can hear pigs next door - can definatley hear chickens, roosters, dogs, kids, people and motorbikes - but not unpleasant. It’s like 'experiencing' village life but being in a gorgeous little oasis where all you can SEE is a rice field (but not a very pretty one this time of year), plants, bamboo, trees, forest and mountains. A little piece of heaven with enough 'noise' to let you know you're still on earth. Lower Bambu room is great - but you can hear the people upstairs moving around - I can tell they’re trying to be quiet and appreciate it! We have a great patio with 2 comfy couches and 2 chairs with a postcard view. The room itself is large with a big fan; no air con. Windows and doors open up on 3 sides and there is a good mosquito net over nice large bed. Very nice bed linens - the best yet in our Indonesia trip. Very soft cotton with beautiful Balinese type print. Framed bed has wide framed lattice top covered with tied down silk, then substantial mosquito gauze falling to the floor. Bit sparse on furniture - never seems to be anywhere to place a suitcase at a convenient height. I ended up using the stool from under the small desk. There is also a small open wardrobe and 2 end tables. Water jug with drinking glasses, flashlight, mosie spray and flowers also included. The bathroom, I think, is amazing. Completely outside - shower, sink AND toilet!! Two each nice bath, hand and face clothes - and hand soap. Good water pressure & hot water available. It was confirmed at dinner from the German couple in the room above us - there is a pig next door! And the multi generational Australians in the second villa said that the locals started rice thrashing at 4am today if we hear a strange noise but we never did. We all had dinner in the central open air bungalow behind the pool. My husband and I pre-ordered the special Balinese Riijstafel – it was a bit pricey at $38USD but worth it for the presentation alone; and flavours were really excellent. The pool area is very pretty, the pool looked a bit murky but we swam anyway –and it was fine. Nice loungers by pool and throughout the property. Surprisingly very few bugs here in Jan. We met the owner Beate in the afternoon, she is very friendly and we had a nice talk. Breakfast is worth the money - excellent homemade multigrain toast bread with 3 homemade, tropical jellies. Yogurt, oatmeal & honey. Feta cheese. Butter. Eggs made three ways - we had scrambled - not too nice looking but very tasty. And friend bananas!! I would definitely stay here again but would stay longer than our one night, and would definitely recommend it to anyone. A perfect place for a family gathering as only 4 rooms in 2 villas – perfect.

This is the second time we've stayed here. What an absolutely amazing villa. From the delicious breakfast, to the beautiful outdoor bathroom where you over look the sunset and hear the creatures, the monsoon, the amazing spring water pool, the friendly helpful staff, 15min drive to sekumpul waterfall, the cute villa dog that sat outside our door to keep on guard ;) the friendly local people...this place is on such an offbeaten track I don't think no one really knows it compared to tourist trap Kuta. A true hidden gem! For the 3 nights we stayed no one had booked the other 3 rooms so we had the whole villa to ourselves!! I can't wait to visit again.

This place is definitely away from it all. If you are looking to relax and explore the countryside, it's great. The rooms are very nice and natural, with no ac but cool at night and with gorgeous views, especially from the upstairs room. The pool is nice and refreshing. The food and massages were very nice and reasonably priced. There are much cheaper food options in neighboring villages. There is a waterfall nearby but this requires at least a half day and a motorbike or car. I didn't see it but it is supposed to be very nice.

After a four hour drive from the airport the last thing I wanted to see was a building site. But that was in the dark and the pile of bricks at the front had nothing to do with what was behind the gate. We awoke in the morning to a small villa set in The beautiful Bali countryside. The staff were very helpful and did all they could to welcome us and look after us. We had 3 nights and two days here. That was enough. We walked to the nearby waterfalls which were very nice. A round trip of about 3 hours. Not much else to do other than relax which is just what we wanted. I would defiantly recommend if you want to relax for a couple of days. Anymore and you may be twiddling your thumbs or wanting a larger pool.
