Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Call Issue! Whoever is answering the calls in Cathay Hotel Suva needs to go through proper training on how to answer and to speak to whomsoever called. This is the WORST call experience I've ever attended!

me and my family stayed here for a night and wanted to have a late check, offcourse not for free, unfortunately, the grumpy and arogant front of house staff sau they dont have a policy of Early check in or late check out- what a joke, first hotel i have come across which they dnt knw what these words mean, rooms are so dirty, needs maintainance things are falling apart- my advice to the management is to aquaint , train and get professional people so this hotel can compete with beautiful Tanoa Waterfront Hotel, hope the management can look into this.

We stay at at CAthay Hotel in Lautoka for anything up to a week every time we visit Fiji. 15 times so far, and heading there again in 3 weeks. This is the first stop on our around-Fiji holiday which is usually about a month long.Yes, the Cathay is by no means the luxury 5-star hotel of your dreams, but it is enormously good value and by bargaining you can get that good price even a little lower. The renovated double rooms are largish, have a small fridge, an attached bathroom, and ours has a double and a single bed. We eat out, visit the Northern Club (as mentioned), or buy fresh 50c buns from the Hot Bread shop, and buy butter, cheese, onions, fruit. All low cost. It is old Colonial Atmosphere here. The towels are late because they don't come in dry till the late afternoon. If the fridge doesn't work, go down and ask for another. And you will get it. The toilet roll may be missing, but it means the staff forgot to put one there. Ask for it. Ask for an electric jug from the bar, pay a small price, and you can make coffee and tea in your room.
This is a hotel you have to know to understand. The value is there if you know, and town is on your doorstep. You can eat at the restaurant that is part of the Lautoka Hotel. And that's good value. We recommend this hotel to any couple on a budget, or who want to stretch their money, once they understand the setup.

We stayed at Cathay hotel after a mess up with the guest list at Lautoka Hotel.
Great satff ( very friendly indeed). Room was good and the facilities were alright for the price we paid. Hotel in town and a supermarket was very close by with buses running regularly. Spacious rooms. Liked it :)

I think reviewers were a little harsh. We stayed 2 weeks in a double room with a group, plenty of room, the fridge worked, so did the aircon (noisily) and what does it matter if you need to pay a deposit for towels- they were changed daily. The main topic of conservation was the water, will we have hot or cold today - or none. Lautoka's water supply is like that, I think the hotel forget to switch on their booster pumps. Good value and a convenient location. Staff were great.

Room Tip: Choose an upstairs room -more likely to have hot water.

Over priced hovel. Simple really. My wife and 2 children were in need of somewhere to stay and decided on this as it was 1am in the morning. We were charged roughly $75 for staying here, the only reason we stayed here was that the other 2 decent hotels in town were full (we were surprised) and our flight came in late. The beds must be circa 1975. This is because they looked EXACTLY like beds we bought new in about 1975. I washed my hands - no towels. They charged us $75 for a room and no towels?? Pay a deposit and get a towel?? If we had paid $20 for the room then maybe. There was no T.V. No Radio, the aircon dropped the room temperature by about 2 -3 degrees and was as loud as anything. The sheets looked clean. I used the shower in the morning, it was filthy. I went to the supermarket, bought some cleaning material and scrubbed the shower before I could use.
Why did I not bring this up with the staff you ask??
Why waste my breath,
1) they don't care
2) they don't give a toss
3) what would they do if I complained - nothing.
I have had years of experience of Fiji, complaining to the staff/owners just does not work. The only thing they care about is the MONEY. If we continue to use these hotels that over charge for what they are, then we must be asking for poor accommodation.
If we voice our opinion here then who knows. Stay away, there are much better option, same price just 200 meters away.

If you can avoid staying in this place good on you. It was my second stay after a few years. Nothing has improved, dirty rooms, houskeeping forgoth teacups, and even sugar in the sugar city. They put clorine in the pool at 3 pm and we could not use it all afternoon. They ask for 10 $ deposit for a towel concerned you may take it home. We have not tryed any food there. A good restaurant with huge verana is opposite at the Northern Club.

The services and room condition of Cathay is pathetic. I was told that the rooms are renovated. But renovation is an under statement.
The aircon was from the 19th century and dnt cool at all. The room smelled musty and the bathroom was covered in dirt!
A very cheesy place. DON'T GO THERE!

Very unprofessional rooms were not ready until 4pm check out at 10am. Rooms were filthy ceiling fans had thick dust on the blades and were hot and stuffy, broken tiles leaking taps and dirty walls. Unfriendly service and we were not advised if there was breakfast available and it was served up till 9am. You are also charged to use towels and pay deposit which you got back only when the rooms were checked before you checked out really, come on. Seriously needs to be upgraded and improved to meet hygiene standards for the health and safety of every traveller.

This place has it's reputation for being cheap. I would only recommend it to backpackers or budget travellers.
The standard room I was in for one night had one double and a single bed, mini bar fridge, kettle, window aircon, bathroom. Towels are not complimentary you have to make a deposit of FJD$10. The only thing I find uncomfortable is the dull atmosphere. I'm happy catching the taxi so to me the location is okay.
