My wife and I had a lovely time at this resort. It was our first experience of Fiji and we were very happy. The resort caters for a small number of guests which makes it quiet and friendly. The food was good and the staff friendly. We did some snorkelling off the beach and for beginners this was a lot of fun - the coral was no good, but plenty of fish to be seen. We stayed in an indigenous bure rather than the luxury accommodation and were quite happy with this - very comfortable. Only real drawbacks for us were: our transfer operator struggled to find the jetty to connect us with Bekana Garden's boat service [this was pick up and drop off] and the city of Lautoka is quite visible from the island. The city is not that pretty but this occupied only a small part of the vista so it wasn't that insufferable - the city lights are quite nice by night too.

We spent 4 nights here in March 20006. Bekana has a great bar (with happy hour each night - all cocktails $10F). The restaurant area is great, the food was good, the staff were great and went to a lot of trouble for the lovo night on the Friday night (which was excellent), and some of the local villagers came in and sang and danced - we really enjoyed it. The pool was Ok and the grounds quite nice. There were sand flies, but very few mosquitoes. They have a great local band (most of whom have other day jobs within the resort), and you can share kava with them every night. We had a deluxe air-con bure. Think deluxe budget-style. The bed was old and uncomfortable, the air-con didn't work properly, and the cleaner who was responsible for our room badly needed a refresher course. Our room smelt musty, and it was far from clean. Half of the deluxe bures had a different housemaid and their rooms were clean, with fresh flowers/towels etc. every day. We didn't see any flowers except from when we first arrived. The couple alongside of us (same room cleaner as us), had not had their towels/sheets changed in 11 days! Bekana is currently building some new deluxe beachfront rooms (which were right next to us, so we had construction noise as well). The beach is average and the sand is quite course. There is no snorkelling off the beach. You have Loutoka in the distance and the lights are quite pretty at night. The resort was busy and full - there is definitely a need for lower-priced accommodation in the area. If our room had been more inviting, we would have enjoyed our stay more. Having been to most parts of Fiji, I would not recommend staying here as your only experience of Fiji. However, we met some great fellow travellers there and the staff were friendly enough. Bekana is an old resort and the current owners are definitely making improvements and up-grades. The old saying applies - you get what you pay for.

My friend and I stayed at Bekana on our way home from studying in Australia. We wanted something quiet and relaxing and that's exactly what we got.
The staff at Bekana was awesome. By the first day the whole staff introduced themselves to us and remembered our names for the rest of the trip. My friend and I were staying in the traditional bure which is exactly what it says... traditional. It has a bed, a fan, a fridge, a bathroom and a mosquito net. It was not completely booked while we were there so the staff gave us an upgrade to a much nicer room for free. The new room had airconditioning and a much nicer area.
The food was great! There is only one restaurant so there were only a couple options on the menu, but what would you expect from a tiny resort. Every night they had a couple guys from the resort playing music which was always great to listen to.
During the day the man in charge of events (Steve) would have all sorts of things lined up to do. One day it was basketweaving, another day coconut tree climbing (and tasting), the next was beach volleyball. All of those sort of events were great because you met some of the other people staying at the resort and later made great friends with them.
For my friend and I we went to Fiji to relax and enjoy the sun as well as have some fun and that is exactly what we got!!
I had a great experience and would definitely go back again!!

Although the island is beautiful - our stay wasn't. No porters to help you with your luggage, so you have to drag it all over the sand etc to get to the bure. Our bure was ok however, cigarette butts were in the interior sand shelves. Water was a joke. Only a trickle in the sink & bathroom, so we couldn't shower. Maintenance man came and turned the shower on.. walked out.. and never returned. We were told WiFi was available however, you could only connect if you were in the reception area. Food was average - eggs were raw for breakfast. We were booked to stay for 3 days but left the next day. Beaches was also dirty - we ended up cleaning the rubbish out the front of our bure. We won't be back anytime soon.

Understaffed and it took more than an hour and half to get a pizza and a serve of fish and chow that we ordered for lunch. We ordered second serving of the same and we waited for over an hour and the food didn’t arrive. All guests complained that they waited for over an hour for meals. The swimming pool was hogged by a group of five local men who drank bottles of alcohol in the pool and played a ball amongst themselves for over three hours in the pool, they were rowdy and noisy, and had put music on a very loud speaker on repeat for the three hours or so we were there. We went to relax as a family but our time was cut short as it was an expert we that no tourists or locals should have.
Do not recommend.

We were going to Fiji after spending 2 weeks in New Zealand's North Island. (By the way NZ is beautiful and friendly, unlike this place). Well what can we say about the Bekana Island resort, well it's probably the worst place I've ever stayed in, albeit for 2 nights. (Please take into account I spent 5 years in a NATO roled TA unit and stayed in some pretty rough places, including German forests during October).
When we first arrived there we were stunned at the place, got it was dirty, and as 1 or 2 have said reception weren't the most friendly. After being shown to our Bure, HA! HA!, we showered and went to find the advertised Diving facilities. We've never had diving here but we can arrange for diving for you from the capital we were told. We then took a quick stroll around the Island, OH MY GOD! We were eaten alive by Mosquitoes. We put this down to it being close to evening.
The evening meal was only just edible. Breakfast the following wasn't much better. We used the excuse I had to use the internet to get my email as there was urgent famliy business to attend to. We found our 2nd choice of hotel in Fiji rang them and booked in for the following day. During the remainder of our last day in Bekana we were eat alive by mosquitoes, which seemed to work a 24 shift pattern. We moved onto SeaShells@momi bay. Now that's a much better place to stay. The new block, although not near the sea is lovely.
So if Bekana Island hovel is still open which I hope it isn't, don't go there!

My wife and I spent the first 3 nights of our 7-night stay here (the other 4 were at Musket Cove, so we've got some basis for comparison), which was our first in Fiji.
We read the reviews on tripadvisor before booking, and were a little apprehensive, but all fears were allayed soon after arrival. We stayed in a thatch-roof, beach-front bure about 20 yards from the water. I think it cost about $90F/night, which we thought was an unbelievable value for what we got. There was no AC, but the mosquito net did its job and the small hut had everything we needed--even a mini-fridge for water.
Here are some more observations:
0. If the words "plush", "hardwood", "pamper" and "spa" get you excited, this is not the right place for you. If you have reasonable expectations and are willing to work with the ultra-friendly staff to solve any problems you have, then you'll love it.
1. We were the only Americans there, which was nice. This resort seems to attract unpretentious Aussies and Kiwis, some with kids, all very friendly. There was a great crowd for happy hour (6-7pm) every night, plenty of fun volleyball in the pool, and good company on excursions.
2. Go for the meal plan, especially if you're a big eater. I'm guessing that between the heat, kayaking, and other activities we burned 5000+ calories/day, which means you're eating pretty heartily. The meal plan fixes your food price, and the restaurant is exceptional--we never had a bad meal. The buffet lunches with lamb, chicken, pork, curry, kakoda, etc. are to die for.
3. BYOB. You're not supposed to bring food/drink to the island _if you're a day-tripper_, but if you're staying there, it's o.k. from what I understand (but not to the bar/restaurant, of course). Stock that fridge with Fiji Gold or Bitter, and get some Bounty rum (ca. $15F/bottle) in Lautoka, too. When you're at the bar/restaurant, take advantage of happy hour (== 20% off everything).
4. This place is about just plain old-fashioned relaxation. If must have various activities planned all the time to enjoy yourself, you'll run out of them here after a few days. If you want to sit on your patio furniture in 2 feet of ocean water while reading a novel and drinking Malibu and Coke, you've come to the right place.
5. It's a tiny resort--only 16 units, and there are 14 more coming online in the next 1-2 years. When we were there it was supposedly "fully booked," but it was far from busy, at least by our standards. It's amazing to be able to enjoy a vacation at a small place like this for this kind of price--in the U.S., a decent price means you're part of a cattle herd. At Bekana, everyone knew our name, and was super-friendly.

We had slightly higher expectations of Fiji, though we understood it is poor, it is a popular tourist destination, and if nothing else, try to keep the place clean. Instead, we didn't see the Fiji of Pristine azure water, and beautiful beaches, but rather a dirty run-down sort of place where garbage is pile up on the beaches, and little effort is made to keep the place tidy. So this stay left us feeling a little disappointed. We chose this "resort" because we really wanted to stay in a traditional Bure, and enjoy an island experience.
From the airport we caught a taxi to the Lautoka wharf, only 30 FJD. But our taxi driver didn't really know where to go, but eventually found the spot. At the wharf, we had a couple of Fijians saying "Bekana, over here", in a rather unseaworthy looking, unmarked boat. We were a little suspicious, but figured we don't see anyone else or any signs so I guess this must be it. They were friendly enough, helped us with our luggage, and got us to the island, albeit slowly. The receptionist wasn't overly warm, but did greet us with a couple of island style drinks. We had booked a traditional Bure, wanting the sort of authentic island experience, but due to heavy rains, it was too musty and dank, so to their credit, they upgraded us for free to a more modern unit. They also allowed us to check in at noon, since our place was already ready.
Breakfast in the morning was basic but sufficient. Toast, cereal, fruit and juice. The other meals there were not fantastic, particularly for the prices they charged. Our first lunch meal, the meat tasted slightly off in the spaghetti sauce, and we weren't too excited to eat it. We ended up going to Lautoka and buying some groceries and making our own lunch for a couple of days. It's cheap and easy to catch a bus into the city from the wharf and you can get a decent lunch for 3 or 4 FJD. At the resort, the menu was often just a hand written list on a piece of paper with prices decided on a whim. Lunch and Dinner seemed often overpriced, although one night we did have a nice curry buffet. There were not too many guests, so we found our stay rather boring, as no scheduled activities took place, other than the welcoming Kava ceremony which took place the night before we left.
Most of the employees were friendly, big Eddie taught us a card game, and we enjoyed his company. some of the other guys tried to sing and play guitar at dinner and amuse us. I did get to use their internet facilities once, which I appreciated.
Overall it was a disappointing experience. Granted it was during slow season, but they could still try to maintain the place, because there were still guests coming and going. I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt and believe that during busy season it is a more vibrant place to be. They did arrange a transfer to our next hotel, which was only 10 FJD. I would say if you are going during slow season, pick a different place. Also, the photos shown on the website are clearly saturated to try to give more color to them. See my attached photos for an honest look at what to expect.

This was my husband and I second trip to Fiji. We were very disappointed with the island. Accomodation was average, not very clean and beds not changed often enough, had to ask for another pillow as the beds only had one each.
Room had a tv but only one chanel, no radio or clock.
Food on the whole was quite good if expensive and the cocktails were astronomically expensive. Limited menu and facilities. Staff lovely and very friendly. Pool very small and awful.
No coral to speak of lots of fish though. We were led to believe that you could go to a nice secluded island free. This was not so, it was a charge of $15 each. If you wanted a particular time to go to shore you had to pay.
The boats were very basic and if it rained you got wet!
Overall we were very disappointed and will not go back. The coral coast is much better. We went to the Hidaway resort before and it was fantastic.

After reading other reviews and looking at the "resort" website, my partner and I felt very excited about arriving at Bekana Island for our first romantic holiday together - we were both totally and overwhelmingly disappointed! On arrival, after crossing from the less than aesthetic Lautoka fishery wharf in a boat that was anything but sea worthy, we found our way through the uninviting "restaurant" area to the Reception Desk. The young lady on the desk didn't seem to be expecting us at all and was quite vague. Despite the "resort" website stating that activities like kayakking were complimentary she took no time to inform us of all the additional costs for pool towels, kayaks etc. When we were shown to our "luxury" beach front bure, I nearly burst in to tears. It was MUCH smaller than photos had shown it, and was anything but clean. Left alone with my partner we marvelled at the state of the place. There was a strong smell of urine, the bed cover was really filthy, the bathroom looked like it had never been cleaned and various electrical appliances were not working including the ceiling fan and bed side lamp.
To cut a long story short, we asked reception to sort the problems 3 times and they kept assuring us that things had been cleaned and fixed - they were not.
The "dinner" we were served at 7pm in the grotty "restaurant" was inedible (apparently it was roast night but we still aren't sure what it was we attempted to eat!) and by the end of the night I had been in tears several times. We had attempted to make a coffee in our bure but the stained and dirty crockery provided stopped us in our tracks.
The next morning we investigated the very small pool which was a disgusting shade of dirty dark green, and the beach, which boasted 2 or 3 deck chairs and lots of rubbish washing up on the sand.
Thank God for mobile phones because we were able to call our travel agent at home and get out of there the same day. We were extremely relieved to leave the bugs and dirt behind us.
We've just got home and re-checked the Bekana website - it really is a fairytale!
