The Eskaleh Nubian Ecolodge was the ideal choice for an overnight stay in Abu Simbel. It has a very pleasant setting on Lake Nasser and a 2 km walk to Abu Simbel. Our room #4 was rustic with a rough stone floor and comfortable twin beds with mosquito netting. The plumbing fixtures could use updating, but the hot water shower was actually better than high-end hotels we had stayed at in Luxor and Cairo. There was a tiny patio in back, probably suited to smokers. The food served at the hotel was very good, especially the lentil soup and the fresh fish. We enjoyed the outside bar in the evening and talked at length with "Hody", who ran the boat which takes tourists on the lake. The entire staff was very friendly. Overnight accommodations are limited in Abu Simbel but I believe the Eskaleh is your best choice.

Once again, I made a last minute decision to book a hotel in Abu Simbel, to see the Temples and town.
I had no idea what I was booking, I just booked. Upon my arrival,i was greeted by very friendly smiley staff & a rugged outdoor cat. My breath was taken away more and more as I passed through the hotel to my room! This place is great! Vaulted ceilings beautifully painted traditional mud walls, dome ceiling dining area, & the rooms have the same feel & are very big.
I ordered local perch for dinner & it couldn't have tasted better! I grew up by the sea, I know fresh fish & this was fresh caught and the local spices were perfectly balanced so I could enjoy the spices without losing the fresh taste of the fish itself. Great job chef! I am also generally, wish you washy about Tahini but their Tahini was good to the last swipe of home made bread!
Staff are great, speak good English, friendly & and obviously intelligent. And the rugged cat.... He is super sweet and loves attention, doesn't seem to be a table beggar just likes to be scratched. Give him a few seconds of your time and you will fall in love with his sweet rough and rugged nature. 5 thumbs up for this place, a must stay when in Abu Simbel (had to borrow a few thumbs from friends 😉). Oh yeah, and they are right on the edge of the Lake...no crocs and an amazing scenery for: morning coffee, breakfast, or lunch.
2 minute walk from bus station and 11 minute walk to Abu Simbel temples! Local Tuk yuks are cheap and fun, about 25 EP to temples.
Happy I chose them.
Brian
PS,
If you want to take pictures with anything other than your phone inside the RAMSES 2 temple, make sure you buy your camera pass before heading to the temples.

This was the most rustic of the 6 places we stayed in in Egypt. To a certain extent that's to be expected as its a traditional Nubian lodge. We had a very large room with comfortable bed but the 'dressing area' next to the bathroom was essentially open, with just fly netting and thin curtains which didn't cover the full width. Flies and mosquitos and small lizards are about. I think people ooh and aah over this place because they find it a refreshing change after Western style accomodations elsewhere but the truth is you can get better, traditional properties in Aswan - and cheaper too if you want a Nubian experience. There is a fridge in the room with 2 bottles of water and they sell beer which is a boon. The breakfast was tasty (especially the Omelette) but not much on offer and miserly portion size. It seemed reasonably clean to us and I'd still recommend it as despite the value for money as there is little choice in ABS but definitely eat out. We saw pictures of shisha but actually they don't do this. If you come with Egypt air, they drop you on the main road a 2 minute walk away. A tuk tuk anywhere in town is 100 LE (you might be able to barter that down further). A taxi to the airport is 150LE, again you could try and haggle.

During our 2 days trip to Aswan, we decided to stay at the Eskaleh Ecolodge which is at walking distance from the temple site (20 minutes). Very warm welcome, very caring, everyone making his best for us to enjoy our stay. This is the place for those who want a nice authentic local touch. Great food (fish), very affordable, that we could enjoy on the terrace. Now, know what to expect : Egypt is quite a noisy country, so you need to be confortable with noise and enjoy the communicative egyptian energy. Also, the lodge is welcoming small groups. It is still much better than bigger hotels saturated with large groups. Finally, beds are a bit tough, often the case in such lodges. But overall for us, a wonderful, relaxing, happy experience.

That was our third time at the Eskaleh Nubian Ecolodge.
The place is perfectly located to visit Abu Simbel temples. They can take you there by boat to see the sun rise from lake Nasser at around 6 am, you do the visit when the temples open then you go back and the breakfast is waiting for you.
This time, we spent a fantastic 2021 new year’s eve with another couple, the staff and a few of their friends, with an improvised Nubian musical evening. The rest of the time, we enjoyed the great food, relaxing views over the lake and company of friendly and warm staff.
The place has a real spirit and is part of the Abu Simbel Nubian experience for those who want to run away from large hotels and spend time in an authentic place.
We love it and will come back!

Everything in this hotel was just perfect: our room was really big (45 m²), the view on the lake awesome and the food so delicious. The highlight was definitely the kindness of all the staff and the owner.
In our room was a big bed, a bathroom, a fridge, a cabinet, and the bed had 2 mosquito nets. The staff helped us also to get a taxi to the temple in the morning and to get the local bus back to Aswan.
We have enjoyed our stay in Abu Simbel a lot, because of this peaceful place and the great staff. Even though we didnt stay long, we were quite sad to leave that hotel as the people are very friendly.
We have found the hotel in a guide book and were happy to stay there.
If you go to Abu Simbel, this place is highly recommended.

Really surprised at the 5* reviews this place has received.
The location is great and on arrival the hotel has the appearance of a lovely, quirky, boutique place.
However the reality is a grubby and poorly maintained premesis that is filthy. It has not been redecorated in years and any repairs have been poorly done.
The rooms were dingy, the headboard of the bed and all furniture would have needed a scrubbing brush to remove the dust. The 'curtains' were strips of shabby cloth threaded on a wire. Doors and window were poorly fitted with gaps around the fly screens. Bathroom furniture was badly stained and you wouldn't want to go in without shoes. No bottled water. All in all I had better accommodation in the cheapest possible hotel in India in the 80's.
The food was awful. The Light lunch, advertised as soup, 2 salads and dessert consisted of a small bowl of clear veg water ,2 slices of fried aubergine with a quarter of a grated carrot and a small plate of tahini. The dessert was a banana.
The evening meal was worse. 100g of grilled sinewy chicken (you can ask for 200g at extra cost) a small mound of rice, and a small mound of undercooked mixed vegetables that must have come from a freezer pack.
Breakfast was 2 small slices of dried out cheese, a pot of yogurt, a triangle of laughing cow cheese, some pittas and an omelette.
The only plus were the elderly waiters who were really friendly. The management were aloof and disinterested.
Nothing Eco about this place, plastic straws and all the usual single use containers that you get in most hotels
Any alternative as to be better than this

Highly recommend that you stay overnight when visiting Abu Simbel. This allows you to visit during the day after all the day trippers have left and to come back in the evening when the temples are beautifully lit. Eskaleh is true Nubian architecture - simple but comfortable and clean rooms with small terraces. The owners and staff are absolutely wonderful and they make your stay. Lovely outdoor seating near reception for an evening glass of wine or beer. My only negative is the food. It's pretty basic and would have liked to see more fresh foods at breakfast. Then again, I wasn't there for the food. Friendly and personable low key place to stay.

First off, if you have the option to plan an overnight stay in Abu Simbel, make sure to do so. The sound and light show gets widespread praise as being the best in Egypt (we can assure you it is much better than the one in Giza), and you can return there first thing in the morning as the sun shines directly upon the temple before the busloads and vans of day trippers arrive from Aswan. And there is a third reason: you can take a boat to see the Temples of Ramses II and Nefertari from the water — at least you can if you stay at Eskaleh. They have watercraft that can take you for a one-hour ride that glides by the temples and give you a perspective not available by land. There appear to be few such watercraft options in Abu Simbel, and for 1,000 EGP (approx. $32 US at this writing) for one hour, we thought it was well worth it. Just inquire at reception.

As many others have noted, there are relatively few hotel options in Abu Simbel, and we are glad we chose the Eco-Lodge. The rooms are basic — no TV or phones, for instance — but the accommodations were clean and the shower and heating/AC worked fine. There was no mosquito netting as we had seen in many photos, but in our part of the lodge, at least, there was no need for any. We were able to enjoy some wine on the patio in front of our room, and the staff could not be friendlier or more helpful. It must be said the food options were limited and the food itself not the best we encountered in Egypt, but hey, it was okay and for just one night.

We were told a large extended family collectively runs the lodge, and there is a tip box at reception, so it is not necessary to worry about whom to tip how much for individual services.

Given the choices, the Eskaleh was still good option to select for our one worthwhile night in Abu Simbel, and we are very happy we stayed there.
