Detailed Reviews
I flew in to Cali only expecting to stay for a day, I had ended up at Hostel Tropica after meeting one of the owners. Great guy, very welcoming. Met some awesome people there and ended up staying an extra 3 days. The area is nice with some great restaurants to try out. Thropica is pretty mellow for the most part, wouldn't call it a party hostel although they do have some events but after 10, its quiet.
The breakfast was good (And Free).
The employees couldnt have been any friendlier
The prices were super fair.
All around good vibes, I plan on staying there again when back in Cali.

+1
Loved my stay there, twice already and i will do it again! The hostel is very well located near the river and many restaurants and bars. Very nice and clean rooms / apartments with a personal fan. A delicious breakfast is included you can enjoy it at the beautiful patio where you can also have drinks, long talks and make friends the rest of the day.
If you stay or not at the hostel you gotta ask for the "Salsa Experience Show" with a salsa class included, it was super fun!!! In July we went to a nature day tour in San Cipriano 3 hrs from the city :) Very friendly and helpful staff and of course the owner. <3 thank you!

A new hostel, only opened this year, it definitely attracts a quieter crowd. If you want a party hostel - head to El Viajero, just around the corner.
- Dorms are large - choice of either 4 or 6 bed dorms, which also have private rooms attached - all sharing one bathroom. Daily cleaning service. Hot water in showers - okay water pressure
- Private rooms not very big
- Free salsa classes each day (as long as have enough people otherwise they will cancel) male teacher really good (can't remember his name). Female teacher not as good as helping individual learners - only focused on instructing the males
- Courtyard space could be more effectively used with an additional shade cloth, hammocks, more lounge chairs to relax. Area has full sun in day, so too hot to sit. Not really any place to sit comfortably during the day.
- Cafe area, tends to always have lights off and doors closed - not overly welcoming environment to walk into
- Breakfast included - most days bread and fruit. If you are in a private room, you also get eggs. You can add eggs (for 2000pesos) - definitely overpriced - go to shop over road and make your own!
- No alcohol can be consumed on premises that hasn't been bought from the hostel
- Tienda across the road for small supplies plus lady who sits on street selling fruit and veg
- communal kitchen - clean and accessible
- free drinking water and coffee anytime
- Some staff are friendly (Maria was lovely!) others not so. Customer service needing some development for some staff (possibly family run).
- Would benefit from noticeboard that has useful tour information on it and things to do in the area - for example listing things to do each day. Staff seemed lacking in knowledge of tourist information instead referring to pamphlets.
Spanish teacher in local area - Carolina - 27,000 pesos per hour. Lives locally.
Lots of salsa schools in area - pays to shop around to get best price
Definitely go to Baja Majita for dinner and the free movies in evenings at Moconda Cafe
San Antonio a cool area to stay in, be mindful in Cali of your possessions - bag snatchings and mobile phone theft has occurred in local area.
NB - hostel offers free beer for people writing trip advisor review

We are traveling with our little boys, ages 3 and 6, so we are always seeking economical housing that ideally has plenty of space for us to move around. We found exactly what we hoped for - and more! - at Tropica. The suite has a nice size bedroom, spacious 'living room' with two twin beds and a kitchen, and a lovely patio with a hammock and table and chairs. Ask for Suite 1 if you can get it, as it has a little more privacy than some others.
The courtyard is just lovely, with tables and cozy lounge furniture under pretty canopies. Great wifi throughout - a real plus. Most of all, the management and staff treated us as family, allowing our boys the run of the place and helping us with everything from kid-friendly restaurant recs to an opthomology emergency to finding a babysitter to watch the boys while I went to the aforementioned opthomologist.
The San Antonio neighborhood is great, and very friendly (though this is Colombia, after all, where the people tend to be so warm). The hostel is adjacent to a terrific travel/tour agency, which we also highly recommend; with Valley Adventours we went on a walking tour of Cali (highly recommend for getting your bearings) and the whale-watching tour.
Enjoy!

We stayed there for a few nights with friends, the beds were clean and the restroom is big and has hot water :). The locación is perfect close to "el mirador" in San Antonio, The manager Paulo is a really nice guy, he treat us as if we are his family, the social area is great to meet and speak with the others guest. I totally recommend this place it you are planning to visit Cali.

The manager is a really nice women, the location of the hostel is perfect and the price is good as well (for dormitorium). The rooms are nice and clean. The social area and the breakfast are nice as well. It's a quiet place so if you wish to meet a lot of backpackers, this place is not the perfect place for you.

I loved my stay at Tropica Hostel! I booked the apartment with the private patio, hammock included. I worked from there or the courtyard, where the wifi was better than the fancy hotels. The staff and guests were all friendly, it was easy to make friends. The owner even offered up a free salsa class since it was my birthday that week. The tour agency next door, Valley Adventours, was equally fantastic, offering up a variety of tours for great value. Tropica felt like home!

I came to Cali later than I thought. In Hostel Tropica I found a nice place to relax. Paulo is a great person who knows what it means to travel and gives you the feeling to arrive at home! The whole staff is very friendly and on top you can join the salsa class!! Perfect to get ready to enjoy the city of salsa!!
