Had a trip just before the October Holiday to avoid the crowd. The location of the hotel is not far from the city, but it is in an slightly isolated area controlled by the military. A short drive (like 2km) and will bring you to quite a number of well know eateries in Sanya. Just don’t expect you can walk to the city though.

The room is clearly dated. When we check in the fridge in the room was not cold at all (drinks in the fridge are complementary, so it MATTERS :P) as the fridge is broken and they put it at a spot with no ventilation. The door hinge outside of the fridge broke when we were there. The only facility that I am impressed with was the swimming pool. It is massive and relatively well maintained. It has a long stretch straight area for “lap swimming” and also other more relax area as well as a water slide.

Service staff, however, was quick in addressing the issues. Particularly a little girl called Joany, who was nice enough to add me on Wechat, so I can tell her all the issues as I experience them, where she addressed them all right away. She also made a few restaurant suggestions on meals, desserts, drinks etc which turn out to be fantastic.

The hotel clearly needs some work to improve the facilities, but in service industry it’s always the staff service that matter the most.

On additional services, the hotel host sailboat and snorkeling session where my packages included the sailboat, which was quite underwhelming. I wouldn’t have paid for it if I had to pay extra. The snorkeling looks more interesting but I would think you can get better deals outside of the hotel. The spa was good. My girlfriend and I had a coconut oil massage session that was fantastic, as you would expect from MO. Do make reservation early as my girlfriend tried to book a facial session in the morning and it was fully booked for the day.

To conclude, bad hardware saved by good MO hospitality, and my girlfriend is becoming a fan just like all the other celebrities doing the ads for them :P. Hope it gets a proper renovation soon.

The Mandarin Oriental is located in a military zone which makes it the only hotel at the beach. It offers a large waterfront with two sand beaches, where you can go swimming. A coral reef is just in front of the resort, hence you can easily go for snorkeling in the shallow waters. In addition, this hotel has a watersport station, where you can rent SUPs, kayaks and most important to us, catamarans for sailing.
The rooms are located at the bottom of a hill and are embedded in wonderful tropical vegetation.
The resort offers huge sweet water pools, probably one of the largest we have ever experienced anywhere.
The service is good for a Chinese hotel with very caring staff. It has an Chinese restaurant serving evening buffet dinner outside alongside the waterfront as well as a top-class Italian restaurant.
The Sunset bar is beautifully located with a nice view over the ocean. Live music is played at night and the drinks are well made. And it got Nikki, probably the most charming and best bar manager we have ever found in China!

The Mandarin Oriental Sanya is a delightful piece of paradise - close enough to the city’s Phoenix airport and other infrastructure, yet secluded from the hustle and bustle of Dadonghai.

The grounds are very attractive, with impeccably manicured lawns and an array of swimming pools catering to different tastes. Snorkeling in Coral Bay and discovering colorful fish off the hotel‘s private beach was another pleasant surprise. So was the cocktail happy hour and the reasonably priced snacks in the breathtaking setting of the aptly named "Sunset Bar.

The only glitches were that the room we were initially offered had a mouldy smell and that after a ride in the hotel‘s private taxi the driver was unable and initially unwilling to find our final destination. However, both issues were resolved quickly by the hotel‘s super-responsive staff.

First and foremost, it was a select group of staff who made our stay outstanding: Nicky, Nicole and Carrie with their charming friendliness, helpful attitude and excellent command of English helped us out whenever we needed something. They responded instantly to all the messages we sent them to their WeChat accounts. With their welcoming spirit, they made us feel like we were their personal guests. Their service and attitude is outstanding and unparalleled. Thanks and kudos to those three exceptional hospitality professionals!

Congratulations on exploring Coral Bay and enjoying a secluded tropical island vacation at Mandarin Oriental. I'm glad you're satisfied with our service. Daily cleaning and disinfection, health guard, peace of mind to stay! One bay and one hotel, low floor courtyard garden architecture, a ladder of two steps to the guest room, the private environment makes the Mandarin Oriental Sanya is favored by island vacationers. Guests at our hotel can enjoy a 32-degree outdoor pool with a heated ocean view, snorkel at the hotel's beach and dance with the world's tropical fish, ride on a sailboat, or stroll along the soft beaches. China Free Group duty-free experience shop has opened, you can experience one-stop VIP shopping in the hotel without leaving home. Thank you for choosing us and look forward to seeing you again!

This is by far the worst experience I've had among all the luxury hotels (Six Sense, Rosewood, Park Hyatt etc.) and I honestly think Mandarin Sanya should not hold the Mandarin name.

I will give 2 examples, though there are many more examples.

First one is the receptionists accepted people cutting the line and when I went over to argue with her, she said "we prioritize guests who are checking out". Not to mention that I was also checking out, in what universe should this rule prevail? And why on earth there are only 2 receptionists working at 11am?

Second example is really the cleaning. We asked for some towels and it was delivered after at least 40min. The room cleaning was also pretty late at 3-4pm despite the fact that we went out in the morning (hence the best time) and came back in the afternoon.

I hope you guys can really think about the service quality, until then, I am no longer a fan.

It's expensive, but it all feels worth it. Mandarin Oriental feels like a true experience, not just somewhere to stay. The food is good for Westerners and the perks for being a "fan" are worth it considering it's free to sign up.

We were very well taken care of by Mihai and Nicky.

The only thing to keep in mind is table service at restaurants takes quite a while. It was a bit annoying when you're waiting for food and hungry.

This MO was amazing! It is situated in a very calm spot of Sanya. Besides the location, the service was perfect. Mihai has given us a very nice warm welcome tour and even called us one day in advance to make sure if we needed some hotel services (pickup etc.). Basically the hotel has everything you need, you don't have to leave the hotel at all. Mihai is a really experienced hotelier, he really knows how to take care of his customers. Two thumbs up for Mihai! Another important staff who made our xmas week complete was Ben (of the F&B). The reservations, food, hospitality were unforgettable. Thank you Ben and Mihai for your service! See you (definitely) next time!

Mandarin Oriental really nails it !!

Enjoy every second in the room, just the right amount of everything, the mattresses are super comfy and the size of the room is huuuuuuuuuuge (I am surprised that their floors seem to be waxed, which I have never seen in a hotel anywhere).

What’s even more exciting is the facilities, heated swimming pools, bars and beaches, as well as a buffet restaurant with unlimited supply of lobsters and oysters. I have stayed in many hotels in Hainan, and honestly their facilities are indeed the second to none.

Finally, I want to thank all the staff for their warm services during my girlfriend and my stay. All the staff we met were very very friendly and kind.

If I return to Hainan, mandarin oriental is without question the No.1 go-to-destination for my stay.

PS: Special thanks to the room manager Tina. Had an urgent online meeting that needed a quiet environment when i was just about to check out and Tina tried everything to help and certainly had made a very good arrangement so that everything runs smoothly, can’t thank you enough !!

Untrained staffs, bad attitude, no one helps when you need. Bad but over priced food in restaurant..can you imagine a city where is famous for seafood, then in a so-called five star hotel you ordered a fried seafood rice with less than 1 shrimp and not a fresh one, iced shrimp? How Ridiculous !

Overall a great experience for a few days getaway in Sanya. The staff was very attentive, kind, and helpful. The beach of the hotel is one of the better options in Sanya but still a bit too rocky and not a long enough stretch to go for a real walk. I had one incident while there in which I was woken up early at 7am due to loud road repairs. However, it was dealt with very quickly and never happened again. The hotel handled it very well, even offering champagne as an apology which was greatly appreciated. Super professional staff. The room I was in had direct access to a shared pool, highly recommend. You could also get out of the pool and be on the beach in a second. The only downside is that for the price, the room is a little bit small and a bit outdated in style.

Overall, you can stay in the hotel (half) and lie down. I don’t recommend it if you want service.

Pros and cons:

Pros
~The hotel is well maintained indoors and outdoors and is relatively clean.

The scenery is pleasant. There are also several popular check-in spots in the resort suitable for taking photos (the Earl photographer in the hotel is very good at taking photos)

There are many types of breakfast. Lobster wontons, soup noodles, and fruits (papaya and watermelon) are all delicious.

Multiple swimming pools are available. It won’t feel too crowded.

Cons
~The service level varies. A few staff members are more enthusiastic. Most of them only do their own work and don’t give priority to guests (for example, I have to give way to a battery car in a narrow road, and the driver didn’t say anything after passing by)

Battery cars usually have to wait for a long time, at least 10 minutes. There were several times when the front desk called me and said that the battery car was coming. I had to wait a few more minutes after going out... The hotel can shirk and say that it is busy. From another perspective, it can be said that there are not enough people?
~ There are almost no staff on the beach. You have to be self-sufficient: bring your own towel, water, and even throw away the bottles and cans after drinking. It’s quite pitiful when you think about it... The reason why you go on vacation is to have someone to serve you and lie down completely...

Beach access is difficult and not recommended, lots of rocks and rough water. The sea is fairly clean though. On the other hand, they have several large and very nice pools!
