The Holiday Inn Sanya did not disappoint. The prices (we used a IHG point redemption) are reasonable for a beachside resort like this. As IHG Platinum members, we were upgraded to a room on a higher floor with ocean view. This turned out to be a very good thing as the other side simply faces other buildings and the airport. Those are called "Mountain View", but really what window in Sanya doesn't face some mountain?

It is a bit far from any shopping or eating, but delivery services do drop off here so that helps.

This property did not give us free breakfast with our room, but after a polite request, they did give us a few free breakfasts for part of our stay. This is always appreciated, especially when traveling with children. The truth is when you have the breakfast every day, you don't eat all that much, so the cost to the hotel is minimal. Few guests are actually going to buy the breakfast every day and would likely just order McD's delivery if breakfast isn't included.

When we checked in, they told us that there was a free minibar in the room. That was exciting, but then I saw it was literally just one small sprite and one small coke. Better than nothing, but don't expect a 7-11 in your room!

The pool and facilities were well maintained and vibrant. The lagoon-style pool was great for adults and kids with plenty of shaded areas. Perhaps a few more lounge chairs would be nice. For those with small children, note that the back gate of the resort opens onto a busy road and is unattended. I appreciated the ease of getting in and out, but a small swing gate might be a little safer.

One note for management: as a parent, when I choose a resort, I choose it so I can relax with family. That means I appreciate having activities and things to do around the hotel. Often it is the small things that make all the difference for kids. This property gets it right in some areas, like provided pool toys for free. But other areas such as the video game machines, they charge a fee (not sure about ping pong). The Crowne Plaza nearby has a pool table, but also charges guest by the hour to use it.

For a resort, putting in ping pong tables, pool tables, game machines and such for the guest to use for free goes a long way to making the stay extra memorable. Management, do you really need those few coins from an arcade machine? As a parent, it's not about the cost, it's about the hassle of digging out the wallet every time kids want to do an activity. Just build the costs into the room rate and the guest will walk away more satisfied. One of our favorite resorts was the Holiday Inn Penang in Malaysia because they got this aspect right.

The property also plays music outside around the pool. Some might like this, but I appreciate the sounds of nature and the ocean- I don't want to hear Kenny G all day. Perhaps this could be turned off or just for short parts of the day? Maybe other guests like this because the public parks nearby do the same thing.

All in all, we had a great stay!

The Holiday Inn is a great choice for anyone. The hotel is new and the facilities are clean. Some of the advantages of staying here are its proximity to the airport and having a beach front. The beach is clean but it lacks benches and parasols. The waves in this part of the bay are a bit rough and a times you have to check out for white jellyfish. The hotel is in average 30 minutes to the city. The most convenient way to get to downtown Sanya is using a DiDi that costs about 30 ¥ to 40 ¥. There are also share bicycles along the way and it is a fun route for cycling lovers. Perhaps the smartest option is to take the bus. Bus 25 and 26 are some of the routes that can take you to the city. 25 is a route to Yalong Bay and 26 will take you to Luhuitou Park.

There is also room to improvement at the hotel. Most staff don’t speak English and it makes difficult the communication at a times. The restaurant has a wonderful breakfast buffet. Both Western and Chinese cuisine but the tables don’t have salt and pepper shakers. You can ask for salt and pepper but still it is a bit annoying. There is a very small bar in the lobby but coffee is not available at all times.

I stayed at this hotel over 12 years ago and when I returned in June 2021, it was still in excellent condition! The rooms have been renovated recently and the bed in my room was facing the ocean. Very beautiful!!

The pool is one of the best features at this hotel. There are multiple pools and waterfalls, which is great for swimming and entertaining children. The beach (across the street) is also clean and easy to access.

I would like to give a shoutout to Ian Lan. Ian is a manager at the restaurant and he's so nice and helpful. I had the buffet one night and forgot to get the printed receipt for reimbursement. Several days later, I went to talk to Ian and he said he would get me the receipt as soon as the finance department opened after the Dragon Boat holiday. Ian went above and beyond by not only retrieving a copy of the receipt, but he personally dropped it off at another hotel where I was staying. Honestly, even in higher level of hotels you don't get this kind of service! Thank you Ian!

This resort is great for families! If you are looking for a party, I suggest staying in Dadonghai Bay or in the city center.

Woken up by construction at 7 in morning, despite paper notice saying the hotel will ensure times of construction is reasonable. Don’t stay here if you want sea view before October 2023. I wish I could upload video here, it’s very loud.

We stayed in Holiday Inn Sanya bay for four nights in July. We booked a standard room but were upgraded to a seaview room. I have stayed in many hotels and would rate this as having one of the best rooms. The rooms are quite large and the bathroom included both a bath and seperate shower. The hotel has a pretty relaxed and easy going feel to it and the staff were excellent. One attraction is the outdoor pool with the 'kissing fish'. We had heard that Holiday Inn Yalong Bay was better and decided to check it out for one night. We were severely disappointed with Yalong Bay Holiday Inn. It claims to be five stars but Sanya Bay outshines it on all accounts apart from breakfast I guess.
I am really surprised that no one has written a review about Sanya Bay Holiday Inn before. We will be definitely be back.

Thanks to Tripadvisor I rarely find myself at a "clunker" of a hotel, and the Holiday Inn Sanya Bay Resort is another great property. I was at the hotel the exact same time as another reviewer, and our opinions differ greatly. A note of caution though: Every travel guide published will tell you to avoid the three major Golden Weeks in China, or plan accordingly. They are Chinese New Years (Spring Holiday), the first week of May and the first week of October. Most Chinese (most of 1.3 billion) take a vacation at those times, so I think you get the idea. Among other factors, the rates can spike during those periods at vacation meccas which burst at capacity.

Ok, as for the Holiday Inn Sanya Bay Resort, the hotel is an excellent value, generally available for around $80 per night for the deluxe oceanview room with full buffet breakfast included. For this price, the level of service, quality of the room and food, beach and pool facilities are just great! I have been at beach resorts in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Belize, Rio de Janiero, Thailand and Mexico, and this one is a winner.

First, they have a card on the bed, suggesting you call immediately if the Chinese-style mattress is too hard for your taste. They fix that in less than an hour. The bath is spacious with separate glass-enclosed shower and bathtub (see pictures). High-speed internet is free. The balcony and view are paradise on a postcard. The pool is unheated, however, and was a bit chilly for me, around 72F. The famous fish foot massage hot pool was a unique treat, but not sure if I would pay the few dollars again. The beach is very clean, and yes, it does have all sorts of water and land sports available such as dune buggies, ATVs, SCUBA, etc. for a fee. But it need not be intrusive. Just read your book and sip your drink under the many palapas. The beach bar is simple, and serves an ice cold soft drink for $2.

The breakfast is quite varied and plentiful. The chinese items--the buns, dumplings, congee, noodles and soups--were great to try. Many western items included fresh eggs, sausages, bacon, potatoes, vegetables, fruits, various breads and rolls, cereal and so on. Wise eating will prevent any hunger pains for lunch.

About 1/3 the pool is made just for children, and there is a new plastic playground for the kids. I never tried the hotel restaurants, as the Sanya downtown restaurants were a $4 cab ride away. (Fresh lobster dinner for $15, everything else much much less.) Sanya has dozens of good restaurants, most with a seafood emphasis. The open-air ones on the waterfront near downtown seemed to have the most ambiance with value pricing and very fresh food.

I liked the resort location, as it was closer to several tourist spots like the Buddhist Park and the End of the World park. The Sanya Bay location, as opposed to others, is quiet and not geared to glitz and nightlife. The airport is in sight of the "mountain view" room windows, and although I experienced no aircraft noise, I would highly suggest spending the extra $10 or $15 for the deluxe seaview rooms. Building maintenance and upkeep was excellent and the place is uniformly clean.

Commenting on other reviews, yes there is a fly problem when you eat al fresco, outside. And the man who offers massage therapists still does lurk around the lobby. He is harmless and discreet, but there nonetheless. (Why??) All the staff tries very hard, and handy name tags will alert you to a "trainee" so you can ask more trained staff in English. The local taxi drivers are said to be some of the most crooked in China, but as long as you insist on licensed, metered cabs, you probably will get a fair shake.

If you are in China, or close by, "Sunny Sanya" was a great experience. The Holiday Inn Sanya Bay Resort helped make it so.

My husband and I stayed at HI Sanya Bay in November 2005 for a few days. We greatly enjoyed it, the hotel was reasonably priced (despite on-going film festival + Miss World competition), had friendly staff and great pool area.

We would strongly recommend booking the sea-view room, it was so nice to sit at the balcony in the evening and watch the seaside. (Hotel staff will bring ice every evening, so you can have a drink or two at the balcony...)

If you want to go to downtown (approx. 11 km), you can take hotel shuttle bus (twice a day, no charge), double decker bus (a few yuans) or taxi.

When you arrive at the airport, please note that the taxi trip to the hotel should not cost more than 40 yuans - the trip takes approx 10 mins.

Stayed a few days there in February 2006. A very nice resort, a bit small though. Takes about 5 to 10 minutes (about RMB$30) to travel from the airport by taxi. Have all the qualities of a five-star resort including two outdoor massage bungalows. Rooms are well equipped with warm ambience and beds are very comfortable. The fun pools are also nice with a children's playground by the side but the water is a bit too cold. It's ridiculous that the so-called“hot spring pool”with small fishes is only available for a charge. I like the Tea Tree Spa. Paid around RMB$1,100 (before tax) for a two days' treatment that lasts for about five hours. Massagists are attentive, friendly and skillful. The overall standard of the spa is comparable to the famous names in Bangkok and Chiangmai. The a-la-carte of the two restaurants is below standard. Breakfast buffet is so so. Haven't tried the evening poolside buffet though. I took its free resort shuttle to Sanya City for cheaper and better meals on the second day. Definitely need to improve the food quality. As a whole, it's a nice place for relaxation with resort feel and a fair price.

We arrived at the hotel exhausted after out 17 hour flight, and to our delight check in was quick and the staff were extremely friendly. The porter takes your bags straight up to your room and you have the option to go to your room and settle in before dealing with any paperwork. The hotel desk asked us for a deposite when we arrived, presumably for the the minibar and room service tab, but we didnt to pay it until the end of our holiday - then you'll just pay for things that you've used/eaten etc. On the drive to the hotel the first thing you notice is that Sanya is only just becoming a holiday resport. There are row after row of unfinished expensive looking holiday homes and hotels being built all around Sanya Bay, however it remains still quite untouched by tourism. It is a real cultural experience!
Around the hotel itself there are no shops and we were advised not to eat at the local restaurants. The hotel takes full advantage of this and the prices for food and drinks are ridiculous!! You will pay nearly £1.50 for a can of coke and £4 for a beer. Room service food was between £5-10 for a plate of food. We stayed half board and had some of our meals included but quite often the food is mostly seafood and other strange authentic Chinese delights. (which you must try at least once!) However (and this is the biggest and best tip I could ever give!) there is a FREE bus into Sanya city that runs once a day from the hotel, it stops of outside a supermarket where you can get a full bottle of coke for 30p!! We stocked up with drinks and snacks for around £3! The bus also takes you to just opposite a Mcdonalds - if the Chinese food is taking its toll on you, its a lifesaver! It is also extremely cheap!! Two large meals will set you back £2!! If you go down the side of the Mcdonalds then there is a market selling Chinese goods and souvenirs - you can barter to get better prices. Also the indoor market is a girls shopping paradise!! It'll take you a full day to walk round the endless shops and stalls inside, selling bargain shoes, bags and really unique fashion pieces!! The bus goes back after an hour so to see everything you will need to get a taxi back, it is quite daunting but make sure you've got the address of the hotel written in Chinese to show the driver, they speak no english! (You can get this from reception) The taxi shouldnt cost anymore than £2 - check the price before you get in!
The restaurants at the hotel are beautiful and the poolside BBQ has the most amazing romantic atmosphere. The whole area is lit by fairylights and candles with the sound of the pool waterfall in the background. Also the resident band were great, acoustic love songs serinaded to you while you ate! I can't stress how nice the staff were at the hotel. At meal times the manager would be mixing with his chefs and waiters making sure everyone was ok and telling us about all the Chinese food - which was really helpful! Reception desk staff all speak English (or will get someone for you who can).
The pool area is one of the nicest I have ever seen. The pool is huge and has two seperate, more private pools that are raised with waterfalls on each. We stayed in June, which is off peak season in China, so the pool area's were quiet (sometimes we were the ones in the pool) a lot of people dont swim until the night time because it is cooler. The weather was scorching at times, we went for a walk on the beach for about 30 mins and got awful sunburn! Even if you don't normally wear a high factor sun cream, I recommend that you do in Sanya! It only rained 2 days while we were there.
The rooms were beautiful also! Really large with a gorgeous en-suite bathroom with a huge bath. The maids come everyday and tidy up, even putting your shoes in pairs in a row for you! We had a moutain veiw room which really is just a view of the airport, the seaview rooms are much better if you can get one. The air-conditioning was really good especially at night but i would recommend you put it on low in the daytime or turn it off, as it tends to make everything a little damp. (It can get really humid.)
If you book with a travel agent then there should be a rep there to sell you trips and excursions. We went with going places/airtours and we found that they tried to rip us off alot with this. Check first if you can do it independently for cheaper, by getting taxi's and buses. We went to visit the buddist cultural center and it cost £30 each! It worked out cheaper to get a taxi there.
I recommend, if you get chance, to go and visit Beijing. The flight is only 3 hours and it flies by - sounthern china airlines are brilliant!! You get chinese food on the plane and a movie with subtitles! Beijing is totally different to Sanya. The great wall and forbidden city are amazing! Read the book 'Empress Orchid' by Anchee Min before you go, this will explain alot when you get there about the history of the Empress. (Really good book too!) When your in Beijing be very wary of street sellers and beggars, some will try and sell you things and then try to pick pocket you. They will give you fake change and run away. Try not to buy from them. (Dont let it put you off having a good time!)
China is an brilliant experience, I would go back again tomorrow! The Sanya Bay Holiday Inn is an amazing hotel. The only bad thing to say about it are the extreme food and drink prices - far too expensive! The beach is nice and peaceful but in some areas it is quite littered and dirty. It is perfect for couples - not families. Children would be bored here and it is too hot for them. If you do any watersports from on the beach becareful. We went on a scuba dive and it didnt seem very safe at all. The water is quite choppy and everyone was getting sea sick - even the scuba 'instructors'! The rocks are sharp and there are poisoness fish (not by the beach but out to sea). If I went again I would definately check it out more before I payed for it!
I have missed being in Sanya ever since I got back! It was a fabulous holiday and an amazing experience! The memories will stay with me forever!

Taxi is about 65 RMB one way. Entrance to the Buddha 240 RMB. But it is just a Chinese tourist trap. First you pay 120 RMB to take the 20 minute walk, then you have to pay 120 RMB to go inside the statue till the base of its feet. You get a plastic flower, and many people bow to you (but if you don't pay the entrance fee, they get rather impolite), it's Disney Land. You better rent a small motor boat and look at it from the sea, a much better experience. Totally not worth it and certainly not comparable with the Great Buddha of Leshan.
