This was our second time staying at Resort Horizon. It is a fantastic place for families with children. Our kids are 10 and 6, and they loved it. Lots of fun activities, water slides, and evening shows at the dinners. The service is excellent in many capacities. Friendly check-in, even with some limited english. Cleaning staff were wonderful and helped with any small requests. Breakfast is located in a few places. Very busy but efficient and huge variety of choices. Our second visit we booked a larger and more expensive room, but this came with the VIP tag, which allowed for a quieter breakfast experience. Also snacks in the afternoon along with red-wine free flow from 5-6. They offer a bar BQ dinner a couple nights of the week along with a seafood hotpot each night. Both are excellent and all inclusive. The manager William was extremely accommodating and does a wonderful job with his staff. They work hard for your enjoyment. Lots of families with children so it can be very busy but you can find quiet areas if you choose, as the property is enormous. It quits down. During nap time for the small kids. Located across the street are many restaurants and a convenience store. Also a playground around the corner which was fun one night. All in all an amazing place for a vacation in a beautiful spot on the beach. Highly recommended for some family fun. We will be back. Thank you William and staff!

I stayed here for a few nights in early January. A really nice hotel, with super food (there's a good selection of restaurants) and great staff - the bar staff even tried to teach me Chinese! Everyone is very courteous and polite and only too willing to help. The rooms are pretty spacious with everything you'd expect from a decent hotel. The hotel grounds are pretty large with a wide variety of pool area and interesting nooks and cranies, before reaching the glorious beach. After being here on business, I'm now thinking about coming back in the summer with the family, it's so good.

We stayed at the Horizon during the last two weeks of July. The flight on the way out was okay with the seven hour trip to Bahrain being straight forward. At Bahrain we were off the plane for just 50 min before we were called back in readiness for the onward flight to Sanya. Their was a sigh around the cabin when the pilot identified that the expected flight time was to be 9h10min but fortunately their were more than 50 unoccupied seats on the plane so were able to stretch out. Note – with the plane being one of the 2 My Travel 767’s, entertainment is tv’s in the roof with a system that’s prone to failure and it had to be reset a few times. Their were 60 of us destined for the Horizon, although as we left on the 30th July, 115 My Travel guests were replacing us.

Upon arrival at Sanya, having completed 3 forms per person, 2 of which are given out on the plane, the 3rd (yellow) you have to complete at the airport, the transfer to the Horizon lasted about 40 min and gave us our first sight of China. We arrived at 13:30 to find our cases were already in our rooms and then went down to the meeting with the rep David in the Coffee Bar. Although everyone is tired, it’s good to get this out the way so you can then start enjoying your break.

The hotel is fantastic, rooms are clean, air conditioning works fine, broadband computers were a big hit with our kids, tv’s provided BBC World and CNN if you want to keep track of news at home. We also had dressing gowns, slippers & beach shoes in the room. The safe’s are also free and the mini bar can be opened via reception for a deposit of 500rmb (33 quid), that you get back at the end of your stay providing you pay your bill, although the drinks and food within are expensive – so we opened the fridge just to store our drinks brought up from the bars or from the local supermarket!

The swimming pools are excellent & huge; the main pool has basketball nets and volleyball nets in, with the water park having 3 slides, a swing rope and many Jacuzzis as well as the lazy river. The beach was very clean and life guards are always on hand. There are limited water sports on the beach, with the jet skis – the rules dictate you have to take one of the staff on the back with you??. For paragliding you have to go towards the Hilton or the Holiday Inn up the beach. During our stay we only saw 20 min worth of rain and that was during the evening. There are full size snooker tables & pool tables underneath the Coffee bar if you need to get out of that sun for an hour.

You eat your lunch & evening meals in the All seasons restaurant, we were the first group (due to the increased numbers) to use this as all previous My Travel parties had used the Jazz bar that’s now closed, that’s smaller. The food is good, plenty of variety and fresh. Michael is the main man and anyone visiting the Horizon will meet with him within the first 48hrs. His English is excellent and he’s extremely helpful, a real asset to the hotel and all the English guests.

As part of the All Inc, of which My travel are the only one’s in the hotel, all others, Russians, Koreans, Japanese and the Chinese pay as they go, you get to use four locations for drinks / snacks. The pool bar open 10:00 – 18:00 & Beach Bar again 10:00 – 18:00 both offer drinks and the My Travel snack menu – burgers, chicken, fries, spring rolls, etc, the Lobby Bar 10:00 – 23:30 is the main place of a night where the house band play and finally you have the Coffee Bar where breakfast is served. Little known secret about the Coffee Bar is that this is the location where you can get 24hr service – ie late night drinks as the Lobby bar closes. A group of us questioned this on our second night and after a few phone calls were made by the Coffee Bar staff to reception, the locks came off the doors and the drinks flowed. We repeated this on several occasions during our stay.

We tried a few of the trips, Sanya by night with the rep was good and offered value for money. We also went to the Nanshan Temple and Monkey Island during our stay but did these via one of the mini buses outside reception for half the price of going with the rep. 450 rmb (30 quid) to have the driver all day and then approx 10 quid each into the various parks.

There are couple of clubs over the road in the plaza, a Cuban place with a band on each night and also a club called the Red Pepper club that during our stay, became the late night place for some of the English guests. On at least 2 occasions about 20 of us ended up in there until the early hours. The club was very quiet and we were the only ones in but had a great time as this allowed us to choose the music and have a dance / party.

Sanya is a nice place, takes about 25 min in a taxi that can cost between 40rmb – 60rmb. People tell you to haggle to get a good price but at the end of the day you haggling over a pound – for a half hour journey for 4! The market behind MacDonald’s is ideal for all those gifts you have to take home, you have to barter and this can be great fun passing the calculator around.

The star of the hotel for us was Leah who runs the Lobby Bar from afternoon til close! She’s a real diamond, English is excellent (and self taught) a lovely lady who was incredible helpful and sweet, not to mention very good at her job.

In summary, this was the best holiday my kids, wife and myself have had, beating Barbados last year hands down. The place, location, hotel, facilities, accommodation and most of all the English & Chinese people & staff that we met during our stay, have given us many happy memories that will stay with us along time.

If your going to the Horizon soon – lucky you!

The hotel is overall okay. It has great easy access to the beach. The rooms are comfortable, especially the suites. And I love how the suites come with a washing machine. The staff really tries but always seems to fall short.

Checking in is always a nightmare. It always seems to take longer than it needs to. For example, this time, our rooms were "ready" but waiting for the butler to do a "check" to confirm it is ready. This wait added an extra 30 mins to already 30 minutes wasted at the front desk.

The BBQ on the lawn is a great experience. As is the seafood hotpot. What I don't understand is, we paid via wechat pay directly to hotel staff in charge of booking dinners. After the seafood hotpot, I got two calls to my hotel room harassing me to show proof of payment. At 9 PM at night. I understand if we had purchased online that proof would be needed, but again we did a direct wechat pay to their own employees.

Next time, going to give the next door hotel a try. The Sands at the Ritz had better dinner music.

My family and I stayed here for my son's 3rd birthday and had the most fabulous time.
Staff was great and very helpful. I didn't find the language to be an issue as there was enough staff there who were willing to get someone if they could not understand what I was trying to stay. I found that remaining patient and not getting irritated was effective.
We had never stayed here before as a family and the night we arrived decided to do a walk around. To our surprise, we found another pool that had water slides! Perfect to keep our 9 year old occupied.
Food in the Western Restaurant was ok. Not great. The Chinese food was very good and the Noodle House was good.
Overall, we will be going back there for our next holiday because the value is excellent. Big rooms, lovely setting, and great staff!

I was at Resort Horizon for a conference. I hope to convey some of the things which, at current, prevent it from getting more than two stars.
First, let me say that the place is absolutely beautiful. It truly looks like an Hawaii styled resort, with lush grounds, several flowing pools, a beautiful beach, and the complimentary palm trees all over. The rooms are well appointed with many balconies facing the ocean. So, what's the problem?
The biggest problem at the resort is that although they truly want to be a world-class place, the language barrier simply blocks them out. Simple things like getting cold beer at the pool (if they run out of beer in the fridge they just give you a warm one), and reaching another guest's room from your room phone (this is an exercise in futility) are what makes this potential diamond simply a flawed gem.
The hotel restaurants are extremely average, with the exception of the noodle bar and the chinese restaurant (shock and surprise!). It's a 15 minute taxi ride to the nearest village, so going off-site for food without someone who knows the language could be an adventure. My colleagues had many interesting stories to tell.
There was scuba gear and many water sports for rental, relatively cheap, and the staff at the water sports rental spoke enough English to make that experience passable.
I also couldn't figure out why we would walk over to a bar and find lots of well uniformed hotel folks standing around apparently confused with what to do with us.
All this being said, the staff really tried to be helpful, and with a few good english speakers on staff this place will turn around in a few years. While it is a bargain, I would take my money and go to the resorts of Thailand where they understand service. Come back here in a few years when they get their act together.

Resort Horizon is a great hotel, with everything you can expect from a five star resort. The only downside is that staff in the hotel speak very little or no english. However travelling through china its not a surprise and I hope they will improve soon with Olympics 2008 not too far away. Chinese restaurant is the best in the whole hotel, and to be honest if I was to come back I would only dine in chinese restaurant and manager Andy speaks very reasonable english. Rooms are very spacious and clean, room service is good too. I agree with two previuos reviews but to extent, the hotel is geeting better and you won't find better beach in the whole china then the one in Resort Horizon. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone, at the end of the day we have to respect the its china and not everyone has to speak english. Good Luck with your choice.

We flew on the inaugural flight with My Travel to Hainan Island, China, what a welcome we got by the locals as we got off the plane, the press was there taking pictures, garlands placed around our necks and gifts to celebrate the special occassion, as we arrived at the Horizon Spa resort they had a large welcome banner over the front entrance, a red carpet was out and staff were waiting to welcome us, we never looked back from this special welcome to their island.
We stayed in a standard room which overlooked the mountains it had to two queen size beds in it, satellite tv, computer with free internet access, a mini bar if you wished to use it, easy chairs to relax in. shower and bath and a stock of toiletries which were replenished every day, fresh bottles of drinking water was placed in the room every day, towels and beach towels were changed at least twice a day, bed linen was changed every day and Tea, coffee and sugars was replenished every day. Beach shoes and dressing gowns were even in your room for you to use.
The grounds at this hotel are beautiful and it also has its own private beach with beach bar which is kept immaculate, you get no mither on the beach as it is patolled by the hotels security guards. The swimming pools are beautiful the best I have ever seen there are four in total our favourite was the water park, it had 4 jacuzzis, waterfalls, shutes, a lazy river that you could just float around on a ring, plenty of sun loungers.
The staff were beautiful people, respectful, pleasant eager to help at all times.
We were allocated to eat our evening meals in the Jazz bar the food at the start of the holiday was typically english, at the end of day two we commented that we had come to China to experience their culture and food, the head waiter Michael guaranteed that he would sort the menu out for us and true to his word, day three the menu included at least four orthentic chinese dishes, the food was fabulous and I have not got one negative thing to comment on. When we arrived we were given three passes to visit the Island Breeze, the Korean and the Barbacue restaurants one visit each during our stay, not to everybodies liking but worth a try.
If you like a drink on an evening make sure you get your duty free at your airport or on the plane as local drinks i.e. shorts are very limited as in there are none unless you like to drink the equivilant of metholayted spirits.
We did two trips with My Travel during our stay the first being a 2 night stay in Bejeing not to be missed , The great wall was fabulous, don't let the tour guide fob you off with just a short time on the wall you need at least 2hours plus on there, this is your holiday not theirs, also I would just like to mention if you are going to go to Hong Kong make sure you have the double entry visa, back on Hainan island we did the trip to Deer looking back mountain to see the sunset, which included a gorgeous meal and then to finish off a foot massage, I would reccommend this excursion highly.
There is a mini bus that parks near the entance to the hotel, we booked him for a full day and went to Nansheen park to see the Goddess and then back to Sanya city for a bit of shopping, 9 of us were in the mini bus and it cost us 100yuan an hour to hire him, experience the shopping in Sanya city we loved it and I must say again the people were lovely and so welcoming.
We were the first 37 English guests to have stayed at this hotel what a fantastic group we made, we made one big happy family.
We have made some fantastic friends who already we have kept in touch with I so not know where we are going to go next for our hols this one is going to take some beating.

This hotel has the best pool and grounds of any other hotel in the bay. It was simply fantastic. We checked out of our other hotel and into this one just to be at this awsome pool. The beach side services are amazing too. Overall I cannot believe some of the other hotels rate higher than this one, it's simply wonderful. The only area where I could find fault are the restaurants. I didn't really find much appealing to my picky tastes. As to the other reviews who complaint about the lack of English, you need to understand this is China. You shouldn't expect everyone to be fluent in your language. As it is they need to speak Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, and English.

Just returned from Yalong Bay staying at the Horizon Resort with Airtours one of if not the most fantastic holiday we have had.

Hotel - Fantastic location, through well maintained grounds to the beach, the sea was so warm and the 3 pools also warmer than I have ever known before, swimming around the lazy river and under the cave to cool down in the 3 jacquzzis. The rooms were of a large size and were very comfortable. Food was wonderful always a large selection to choose from, and we received tickets to try other restaurants in the hotel Korean, Chinese and BBQ well worth going to them all. Tea House whilst this is not included in the All Inc it is well worth going to check it out and have a cup of flower tea. Definately a high class hotel and in a much better location than some of the larger well known chain hotels. Staff very friendly and some spoke good English.

Flight - Could have been better but not the worst one we have been on, stopping at Bahrain tip take either us$ or Bahrain money to get something to eat and a drink, also take plenty of change on the plane to purchase drinks and snacks as 15 hours both ways it can become quite expensive for the small cans of pop, we took some water bought in the departures and this was a god send.

Weather - it was supposed to be the rainy season and we only had 3 days of bad weather and it was still warm and you could burn through the clouds when the rain stopped.

Trips -
We did Hong Kong, definately stay over as the immigration process from China to Hong Kong can be lengthy, Hotel again very good standard and fabulous location, the guide was very well informed and it was interesting although our top tip is take waterproofs with you as when we visited it was torrencial rain.
Nanshan Buddhism Park - another fantastic day out on the island and an experience visiting the temples you would never forget
Sanya By Night - Visiting the Deer Turning Back Mountain, a wonderful view over Sanya City, chinese meal and then a foot massage, this is not without a slight bit of discomfort but the benefits and how you feel the next day are tremendous.
Shopping in Sanya - we didn`t go on the organised tour, during the 1 cloudy / rainy day we went, would recommend the free bus from the hotel and a taxi back at your leisure, if you get the free bus turn back along the road you have come down and at the main road turn left keep walking until MacDonalds and the main shopping is there, very safe.

Shopping - Bargains we picked up you definately need to barter and go for the best price, prescription glasses in Sanya 2 pairs £58 and very different to those back home, alot of people got these, in the Sanya shops watches of various styles, we also bought bedding and Crocs, in Bahrain Airport these are about £14 a pair also in Yalong Bay at the Crown Plaza Shopping Centre over the road. Bags from the ladys market in Hong Kong.

Other Tips - Take with you high factor sun protection it is very hard to buy out there and is only in very little tubes lasting one day at the most.
When checking in you are asked for a credit card £250 deposit to open the mini bar if you are not bothered don`t do this as any extras spa, or different drinks from the bar can be paid for cash, they just lock the mini bar which is no hassle anyway.
Chinese massage - walk up the beach left towards the holiday inn and in 15 mins you will come across some huts at the end of this and past the pier is a tent where a very good and cheap massage can be had.
Beach Towels to save on the weight of luggage we didn`t use our beach towels as the hotel provided clean ones every day.

Malaria Tablets, you do need them and they are prescription only due to the island,
Mosquito bites yes there are mosquitos so just buy any protection.
Have a wonderful time.
