I stayed at Palm Beach Resort and Spa in Sanya, Hainan Island, China for 4 days and 4 nights in October 2006. This was the perfect finish to my 2 week stay in Asia. I flew from Shanghai (I have a friend living there and he is the one who booked the package for me.) I was there the week after the National Holiday, therefore there were not many other tourists staying in the hotel.

CHECKIN
The lobby of the main building is grand with large marble columns and high ceilings, and is a high rise style hotel. The rest of the complex consists of villas. There were some misunderstandings during checkin, and unfortunately I speak only 5 or 6 words of Mandarin, but there was one man there who spoke English well enough to sort things out and eventually I was shown to my room - the second floor of a villa in front of the pool and steps to the beach.

ROOMS
My room had 2 beds, a huge bathroom and a nice big balcony. The TV worked, but there were not any western stations - but I do not go on holiday to watch TV anyways - the bar was fully stocked and a beach bag, beach towels and sandals were supplied. Housekeeping came to clean the room after breakfast in the morning and again to turn your beds down in the evening. There were always more than enough towels in the bathroom. The room was very, very clean.

GROUNDS
The hotel complex is gorgeous, with small rivers and ponds running through it and little bridges crossing over them. At night there grounds are lit up with small, coloured lights - it just wouldn't be China without all the lights!

POOLS
There are 2 pools and a jacuzzi on the complex. One pool is by the main building, the other in the centre of all the villas. There is a slide at this pool, and basketball, etc. to play in the water. There is also a swim up bar at this pool. The pools are all very clean and well kept.

BEACH
The beach here is gorgeous! White sand with turquoise water, and bathwater temperature! On a clear day you can see both East and West Island in the distance, and if you look East down the beach you can see the hotels along the beaches in Dadonghai. It is simply breathtaking. The only thing I didn't care for were the sand crabs digging little holes and dragging shells along the shore, but they are tiny and harmless.

RESTAURANTS
I only dined in the resort for breakfast, (I spent my evenings exploring Sanya), therefore I cannot say much about the restaurants in the hotel. The food was alright - not spectacular and not awful...I am not a picky eater...but I am not used to dim sum, rice and veggies at 10am, so I only dined at the Chinese Restaurant once. In the Western Restaurant they had eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes and fruit. I did not get sick once and tried many of the fruits offered. The service is great, there is always someone around if you need something. Coffee wasn’t the best, but it was also 10 minutes before closing and the restaurant was empty…what can I expect? There were some a la carte restaurants as well, but I didn’t try them.

All in all, I was extremely pleased with this hotel, the service is friendly and efficient, the resort is very clean and beautifully groomed. The staff are hardworking and kind. I highly recommend this resort for a nice, relaxing holiday in the South China Sea.

Stayed here with my girlfriend for one week. Nice, cosy rooms - good, clean beach. Perfect staff - speaks English well. Rich breakfasts.

But it is far from Sanya. So if you want to go to disco or visit bar\restaurant - you have to go about 10 km. We took taxi every evening - a little bit expensive.

We are Canadians living in Beijing, China. This is a good property for people who want to relax and spend time with their travel companions...NOT a night spot or partier locale. We have traveled quite a bit. The beds at this resort are SO BAD. China has hard beds, but these are beyond hard. They are lumpy. Once I started putting couch cushions under me, I did better. All the beds are the same at this resort...come prepared. Our Beijing travel agent called the property to get them to give us extra blankets for UNDER us. If that is ok with you, then...the property is a bit dated, but the grounds are still quite lovely and well kept. The beach is expansive and very swimable, including for children...no strong undertow, lots of beach space, clean. The quads are a bit annoying. The beach is public, but vendors only ask once. They are not pests. Housekeeping was excellent. This is not a service hotel. Buffet breakfast is ok there are both western and asian options...the food is cold sometimes, but there is an attempt at western options. Be brave and try the Chinese breakfast, and you might be pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is pretty much serve-yourself, and there is no beach bar to speak of. China is not a coffee country...we brought our own coffee, grinder, and french press. There is approximately one person on staff (no exaggeration) who speaks English, so you will make do with charades a lot. The spa treatment rooms are beautiful, the services themselves are pretty good, though a bit more expensive than China standard, still cheap as compared to North American. The languages spoken here are Mandarin and Russian (everyone tried to speak to us in Russian). At night, we had our HDMI cable and movies we brought...not a lot to do after dinner unless you go to the city or to a big club. A lot of people commented on all the Russian tourists...actually everyone we met was from Khazakstan, not Russia...but anyway, they were lovely. They were friendly, quiet and private and NOT annoying. A short tuk tuk ride away is a bit of shopping, but it only costs about $4.00 USD to take a cab into the city if you want to shop. The pools are nice, but not heated, so be careful if you are travelling in December or January. The weather is nice, but not my accustomed "tropical" temperatures. People complain about the expense of Sanya, but we did not find that. We stayed away from Yalong Bay though, to avoid the financial gouge. There is plenty of cheap fruit available, including very fresh young coconut water, papaya, mango, rambutan, dragon fruit, black grapes, bananas, pineapple, and the MOST delicious and flavorful oranges we have ever had. The Coconut Groves restaurant sells tasty Chinese food, but the real deal is on the beach after 18:30, where fresh seafood barbeque, noodles, and fresh barbequed vegetables are a STEAL of a deal. Last night, we ate two bowls of stirfried noodles, five fish, two rays, a squid, stirfried greens, bbq corn, eggplant, mushrooms, taro chips, 4 skewers of scallops, 3 of beef, and oysters for around 30.00 USD...that is for three people. Cabs are even cheaper than they are in Beijing, and fairly easy to find. We also enjoyed going to the Nantian Hot Springs. We took a one hour cab ride there that cost about 25.00 USD. Both of us enjoyed that trip, as did our nine year old. Overall this was a nice getaway and we enjoyed our nine days a lot, but the hotel could easily make some simple upgrades to turn this stay from an Average experience, to Excellent.

We stayed here for a week and we loved our stay very much. The rooms are big enough.Every room has a bathroom,a safe, cable tv. The exterior of the hotel is amazing! Very beautiful! The location is quiet, the good part is that there are no clubs near, surrounding nature is serene. There are two big swimming pools and a jacuzzi. It's a great stay there in comparison with hotels in Thailand or Vietnam. It truly is a gem! Really comfortable,I would come back there even more than a few times, I loved it very much!

The room was average, the beach was a bit dirty, the breakfast was great, the staff speaks no English, just Russian and Chinese. Services provided by staff were perfect. You can hear the noise from the planes landing and taking-off from the airport which is very close to the hotel. The territory is very beautiful and large with many ponds, where you can feed or observe the fish. It is not in the city, which is not very convinient if you like to be close to the restaurants, bars etc. Although it is a good place for the family with kids.

The hotel is near the airport, I could hear planes flying overhead quite often. It's not loud enough to disturb me. The area near Villa A and B has a sewage smell. I stayed at Villa C which was less obvious. Villa C is rather quiet as away from the roads. There are lots of mozzies, so bring mosquito repellent. The hotel serves mainly Russian and Chinese guesst, I think there are more Russians than Chinese. Most people don't speak English. There is an English speaking guide called Jacky whom my friend spoke with. It was Ok for me since I speak Chinese. Quite a no. of the people at the hotel speak Russian. The hotel is old, even the taxi driver who drove me to the hotel told me so. The aircon is not too noisy, it's quite cool. The hair dryer is old. I used my own hair dryer. There are 2 sections of the hotel separated by a road. On one section there is the reception area with rooms on upper floors with lift access. There are 3 stories "villa" with rooms without lifts, around the pools. The other section had "villas" without lifts. This section is nearer the beach. The pool at this section is bigger and more children play there. There is a road to cross before reaching the beach. Staying near roads is not good if you prefer peace and quiet. Drivers in Sanya love to honk all the time. The beach in front of the hotel is much quieter compared to DaDongHai and YaLong. Food at the hotel is not great. I walked about 20mins to Wydum hotel which serves really good Chinese food. The nearby bus stop has bus no. 25 which will go to Yalong beach at one end and Nanshan Temple at the other end. If you dont speak Chinese, safer not to take the public bus. The bus dont necessay stop at every stop, you have to shout to the driver to request to stop. It took me a while to get taxi to airport (RMB20) as the hotel was too near and the taxi drivers did not want to take me. It is easy to get taxi to go to the attractions as they are usually on the road in front of the main lobby. The area feels safe, walking around the area along solo (female) after sunset is fine.

A very lovely resort with big green territory, we stayed in two-storied villas near the pool for 10 days. Our room was on the first stage with pool-view. We were worried it will be noisy and asked to change the room. But the hotel was fully booked and it was told us to wait a night or two. And we were really surprised when the whole day, evening and night it was so quiet! So we changed our mind and stayed in this room for the whole time.
Room is very good kept, bath-room is clean and overall we enjoyed our stay here. Room is bright, bed-clothes and towels were changed in time.
Breakfasts are standard but tasty with great baking. Dinners are also very nice (with not bad selection of seafood).
Beach is located across the road but it has no heavy traffic.
Hainan is really great place to visit, we enjoyed to walk along the beach, watch the sunsets and totally forgot about daily routine... Here you can set your mind free and just wonder the nature...

In this hotel room, all of the sheets and comforters were very disgusting, the tv and all technology was very outdated, carpet was very gross and nasty, very dirty place in general. When we tried to cancel this room the owner was not very nice and would not allow us to cancel the room and kept bringing up excuses

Although the staff of this hotel tries hard to give their resort a kind of luxury glow, most of their efforts get lost in the noise and chaos caused by young wealthy Chinese couples and their offspring. Overspoiled babies and kids cause hammock at the diner and breakfast halls and most of the staff isn't able to speak English as on international scale. For my opinion, this is a hotel that tries hard to play in the international tourist sceme but is terribly stuck on an average sad Chinese level.
