Sanya is expanding rapidly in terms of 5 star international hotels. The Holiday Inn Resort Yalong Bay not to be confused with the other Holiday Inn with almost an identical name is one of the older properties. And while it's one of the most reasonably priced and has a wonderful staff and nice facilities it has one fatal flaw. It's located next to a nightmare activity center that buses in 1000 Chinese tourists a day and generates an unending amount of noise between 8AM and 5PM. That means your reasonably priced beautiful seaview room is subject to blaring microphones, jetskies and motor boats all day.
Of the other choices; the Sheraton is equisite but pricier. However there off season rates are very reasonable. Don't avoid the less expensive garden views on the lower floors they are really quite nice and whole hotel is set back pretty far from the beach anyhow. The Marriott is located next to the Sheraton on one side and right now is subject to construction noise from the Hilton which is opening in January on the other side. A Crown Plaza is opening later this year but is on the wrong side of the road. And finally for something with a Felliniesque feeling, there is the Universal Resort just 100 meters away from the Holiday Inn but on the other side of the road. It looks like mostly a spot for Chinese groups but has a friendly and very customer service oriented Activity Office just to your left when you walk in. The owners name is Bin.

We stayed in the beautiful Sanya Holiday Inn on Yalong Bay when we traveled to China for an adoption. We only stayed one night, but it was delightful. The rooms were the most spacious of all the hotels we had stayed in during our trip. The lobby has a spectacular open air view of the bay. We relaxed and had cocktails in the open air bar and looked out over the bay. It was the most relaxing moments of our whirlwind trip! Bathrooms were spacious and spotless. Rooms were lovely! We would vacation here in a minute.

Dear Sir I cannot believe some of the reviews I have just read about this hotel. I was their in May 2005 and found the staff friendly, helpfull and most COULD speak English if, funnily enough, with a Chinese lilt. The locals did have an area of beach close to the hotel but I found this an extra pleasure, who wants to be with a load of moaning tourists all the time, and I mingled with them happily. The rooms were clean and well appointed and the food more than satisfactory. All the bars had good service, and beer, and the beach bar staff even tried to teach me some Chinese, they failed I'm ashamed to admit, but at least I can now order a beer. It was a long trip from England via Beijing but well worth the effort. The only trouble I had was the cancelation of two of my internal flights but I worked my way around this problem eventually. The manage even booked an overnight stop for me in Beijing on my way home. It is an hotel I would happily return too if I decided to return to Sanya. Yours James Holden

We spent 5 days at the Holiday Inn Resort Yalong Bay - and will never go back there again!! Everything was terrible beginning with the vicinity of a public beach. There were no restrictions for the people visiting the public beach - and there were thousands of them daily!- and the hotel guests. The path for the public to the beach was separated by the bush row where we saw tens of RATS playing around!
The service was awful because nobody at the hotel spoke english, there was 1 answer to all our problems: "no problems!"
The refrigerator in our room was out of order. First it took me 3 hours to explain what a fridge is and after that it took 2 chinese engineers and 5 new "ice boxes" before it occurred to them that the problem was in the plug socket.
The food was terrible especially the chef's recommendations. On the 3 rd day got a severe food poisoning from a club sandwitch and was sick for the rest of our stay.
And still waiting for the credit of the deposit money, we were promised that it will be returned in 2-3 bank days but today is the 5th already and still no sign of the return!
Stay far away of this resort!

This place definitely grows on you. First impressions are of a "resort" overtrading its status a little, in terms of being a real 5 star. That said, the staff here are the best asset and they are all very helpful and friendly and surprisingly well trained.

The facilities here are all pretty good, above average for a normal Holiday Inn, and the sea view rooms are nice (if a little sparse in decor). The food is all very tasty and breakfast very good value. The lobby / dining / reception area has great views of the sea and is light and airy.

All in all I would recommend this place. It does not have the opulence assocaited with Marriott / Sheraton down the bay but the staff do make it all worthwhile.

A word of warning, "organised tours" tend to rip you off and foreigners are almost expected to pay top dollar for the most mundane tourist attractions. If you choose to question this (and refuse to enter a place), the price of the trip increases as these people are all on commission from the tourist spots. This is not a reflection on the hotel, however - just the entire island!

That’s a new hotel in Sanya. Top floors are under construction still. Some capacities like swimming pool are not in full operation and usage. But, all of constructions are in top-modern design and brand new. So, that is very good to live and get a relax in brand-new apartments. Front view to SouthChinaSea. Good coking, friendly staff. There is no any noise from builders. No any discomfort just only good, positive emotions. So, hotel looks-like to have the best recommendations.

Right on the beach, really relaxing to navigate from poolside to the private beach, but be adjacent to the famous pier and diving that departs from Yalong Bay. The lobby restaurant has great views and very comfortable couches on which to lounge, indulge in some great kabobs, sip on fresh orange juice, or assorted tropical drinks.

The hotel is dated, and the service has faded from when I first stayed there, but its still a great place to relax a few days or more. If you get the chance, take a gander at "end of the earth" via motorboat and check out the prehistoric looking rocks. Be prepared for your "guide" to try to charge you more while you're out on the boat, but just enjoy whatever you can see before the pirates try to head back... :P

This would be a 5 star hotel for China standards, which, would equal a 3 star hotel in the United States. I've traveled in China long enough to know to have low expectations when it comes to customer service and facilities for hotels. I can say that my low expectations were met at Holiday Inn Yalong Resort.

I will start with the positive which is very friendly staff. Though they are not very good at execution, the demeanor and attitude is very positive of each (and many) staff we dealt with. Harvey at the front desk was extremely helpful when we were obviously very frustrated with our rooms.

Also, the Kid's club is great for toddlers. We had to supervise them, but, there are a ton of toys and a spacious room for them to play.

The rooms are basic and clean. The beds are extremely hard and I'm a person who likes a very firm mattress.

Also, be very careful if you have active and curious kids. The window latches are perfect height for little children. It unlocks easily (just pull the latch up--very intuitive for even a 1.5 year old) and push the window outwards. There is no screen on the window either.

We stayed in the rooms next to the Executive lounge on the 7th floor. It was very noisy. There was some type of boiler or generator of some kind and we could hear it every time it shifted on or off. Possibly the elevator? Regardless, it was so noisy all throughout the night. Even the air/con could not drown it out. We would have requested a new room, but, because it was such a hassle to get the room we were currently in, we decided we could live with it.

The private beach is merely a stretch of fenced off beach NOT on the water. That element of privacy was nice, however, because the hotel is next to a major tourist site, the beach next to the water was extremely crowded. The workers their all chew betelnut and spit the red juice in the sand. It's pretty nasty. Some will make the effort to cover their spit with sand, but, some could care less.

If you are a Priority Club Rewards member, do take advantage of the Executive Floor Lounge Happy hour. For a family of 4 (2 young kids), you can have the snacks and drinks and then order one or two room service meals and make it dinner.

I would recommend this hotel during low season and for those on a budget who want to stay at Yalong. Otherwise, spend the extra money for a more "resort" experience at another of the big hotel chains.

Response from YalongBay, Public Relations Manager at Ocean View Resort Yalong Bay
Responded 26 Feb 2012
Thanks for your comments! Friendly staff, though not very good at execution: we will do more training on this issue and also authorize them. Noisy rooms: we are apology for this. We are near to the bus station. It is noisy outside. We have good sound-proofing window. May guest close the window when sleep. We also have find out those rooms are disturbed by our boiler and won’t sell them to our guest, just for house use. As for firm mattress, we get many comments on this point. A softer kind of mattress which is liked by both Chinese and European will replace the old one soon.

I have just return home after a three weeks vacation in China. Me and my girlfriend stayed at five different hotels during the time, two in Beijing and three in Hainan. One of them was Holiday Inn Resort Yalong Bay for four nights.
Before we went I spent many hours on the internet searching for great hotels in the whole of Sanya area and i´m very pleased that we chose to stay at Holiday Inn Yalong bay. Considering lobby lounge and the panoramic view, the room, the staff, the food, poolarea, beach and price this is my nr 1 in Hainan (so far).
If I go back I will defenitely spend a couple of nights at Holiday In Yalong bay but also try one or two of the other hotels in the area that I haven´t seen yet, like Gloria and Sheraton.
By the way - their club sandwich is an excellent snack to enjoy by the poolside. Have fun!

We stayed for 2 nights in April. The foyer area of the hotel is very nice with a beautiful panoramic view of the hotel gardens and the sea. We stayed in a room with a view of the garden- the decor was very bland- we got the feeling that it was probably the same as every other Holiday Inn around the world with no appreciation that it is on a Chinese Island. The bed was also rock hard.
We ate in the main restaurant where you can eat buffet style or al a carte. On the first night they had a barbecue on the veranda. I was amazed to see the way they cooked the chicken and pork- they used all the same utensils to handle the raw meat as the cooked meat- this might explain one of the other reviewer's food poisoning. The food overall was only average.
We moved onto the Sheraton for the following 3 nights and it is a world apart. It is a bit cheesey with a ferrari parked in the foyer but it It is very luxurious and spacious and is way ahead of the Holiday Inn with good food, beautiful bedrooms and gardens. No contest!
