From the moment we checked in, Caroline at the front desk took such great care of us! It was my wife's birthday, and Caroline made sure everything was perfect--floral arrangements, chocolates, and even a birthday cake! We stayed in the family suite and had plenty of room for our family of seven. The huge balcony overlooking the ocean was a perfect place to start and end our day. The rooms were very spacious and comfortable and the service was exceptional. It was amazing to walk right out to a private beach (one of the only beaches open for swimming year round) or to enjoy one of the many pools (our kids' favorite was the pool with free soda and inflatable swans:). The breakfast was one of the best western breakfasts we've had in our 11 years in Asia. Be sure to go early (huge discount and no crowds). They upgraded us to the presidential suite our last night and that spectacular. One of our best beach vacations ever. Rachel at the front desk was also very helpful and mailed us something we left behind. We're definitely coming back to MGM Grand Sanya!

The room was very nice and the staff was always friendly and ready to help. The MGM buffet was my favorite. The business meeting accommodated me and made feel very welcomed. There is a nice ocean view in the suite I got. Over all it was a great stay.

I usually never write reviews, but i had to for this one.
We stayed here for 3 nights in October. Weather was perfect and it was not peak season so we managed to get a lot of privacy and a sense of exclusivity. Took a taxi from the airport for 130 RMB (note that it will cost around 100 RMB from the airport to Yalong Bay, about 40 min). We chose this area knowing we would not really go downtown much, so opted for a hotel with a better beach. Staff immediately took our luggage upon arrival and guided us to the front desk. Check-in was smooth and we even got a welcome drink which was delicious coconut milk!

Pros: 
- newest hotel in the area and beautifully designed that truly feels like an upscale resort atmosphere, especially the grand lobby entrance 
- the walkway from the lobby to the pool/beach area was well-maintained and breathtaking. Always saw workers cleaning the grounds and watering the plants
- numerous pools to choose from (wet republic / party pool, main pool, 2 hot pools, game / volleyball pool, and a kids pool). Water was warm and perfect temperature at all times. Pool area was tranquil and immaculately clean.
- clean beach and waters (note: Yalong Bay is slightly further from the city centre but it is much cleaner than the closer Sanya Bay). Beach was very private as well, not touristy.
- many five star hotels nearby (Ritz, St. Regis, Sheraton, etc.)
- Rooms are large and spacious. We booked a Grand room but when we got there it was a sea view room! Beautiful view of the south china sea from our balcony
- Beds are large and comfortable. We had two separate beds that felt like queen-sized beds
- Service is almost flawless. When we walked by the staff, they always greeted us. Darren at the concierge desk was extremely helpful and recommended places to eat and visit. When we bought sweets at the hotel's cafe and brought it to the hotel lobby to eat, within a minute Darren brought us drinks without us even asking. He also assisted in organizing the hotel car for us to go the the city. The driver (Mr. Cho Chong - request for him) was extremely honest and patient and even acted as our tour guide driving us around and waited for us wherever he dropped us off until we were done visiting each place!
- Chocolates and cookies at the hotel's Cafe2Go were delicious. There was a morsel of chocolate with Sichuan chili which was surprisingly pleasant. Cookies were freshly baked and only cost 30RMB for a fairly large box. The girl who helped us with the glasses (who's name escapes me) was helpful and patient, explained the flavors of each chocolate and always with a smile! We went back to get more sweets the next day and Shirley was also very helpful and friendly. 
- Breakfast selection and quality was outstanding. Probably the best I've had in Asia. There was so much to choose from, we wanted to try everything; and you can tell ingredients were all very fresh and it was a good combination of east and west. The Chief Baker, Mr. Sasha, made sure the food was top notch and ensured that we enjoyed our breakfast. Him and his team make the best croissants and Danishes (comparable to the pastries I've had in Paris)! Many different kinds of fresh breads, juices, and milks were also available along with eggs made to order your way. 
- wifi available at the pool and beach (we asked hotel staff and they advised that wifi was only available in the lobby and restaurants, but it can be detected as far as the beach).

Cons:
- there is only one mirror in the entire room which is the one in the washroom. Would've been preferable if there was a full length mirror in the room itself (if you're coming with a few girls, you'd all need to fight for the one mirror)
- housekeeping staff - I was using the blow dryer in the bathroom so it was loud, and was startled when the housekeeper actually opened the door and walked all the way in the room, knowing I was in the bathroom. If you know someone is in the room, why would you come in and ask if I wanted the room cleaned? I'm clearly still using the bathroom and could've been changing! Not a huge deal as I understand that their job is to clean the room, but would've been preferable if they didn't come in knowing that a guest was still inside.
- water sports are expensive here (I don't think it is owned by the hotel but the rental company is just steps from the hotel beach area). I wanted to go for the 2 motor jet-ski, however it was unavailable so decided to go with the 4 motor jet ski (220 vs. 260 RMB). I wanted to use it on my own without a trainer/guide riding with me, but they said that would cost 360 RMB! Keep in mind that this is only for 10 min. 
- as with any five star hotel, expect  some of the food prices to be high (I.e. fresh young coconut drink was 35 RMB). But we managed to order an e-fu noodle by the pool for only 58 RMB + 15% service charge. Quite delicious and worth it for the quality and being able to lounge at the pool / beach while eating (not really a "con")! We also tried the Chinese restaurant, Pin Ju. The lamb stew was flavorful and worth a try (lamb is one of the well-known dishes of Hainan Island). That lamb with a dish of "four corner bean" (Chinese: 四角豆) costed around 280 RMB.

Other than those few kinks, this hotel is superb. A number of staff can understand/speak English and Cantonese (given a few tries), which was helpful with my broken Mandarin. It is the staff like Darren, Chief Baker Mr. Sasha, Cho Chong, etc., that truly make MGM an enjoyable and memorable 5 star vacation spot. I'll definitely be coming back!

Positives: great room with beautiful sea view and bath looking out towards the sea. The cleaner's were the best staff we encountered on this trip very efficient and consistent. The location is excellent if you want a beach vaction and sea swimming. The breakfast had a wide variety of choice to suit all. I had a beautiful facial with Annie in the spa she was amazing.

Negatives: the front desk staff are not trained to an international level. We vistited other international brands while here and the service from the staff us what you expect when paying these prices. There were many issues given the covid lockdown but they need to revise their refund process and stop hiding behind a wechat customer service process. The staff at the Neera resteraunt were shocking, the food is good but they are untrained in how to be a waiter(bringing new courses when we hadn't finished the current one, putting new courses down on top of dirty plates before taking them away, we had got to course 3 and still no drink had been served. Very bad)

Overall if you don't have to deal with the front desk often its a good hotel, but next time would consider a different hotel for better service.

We booked the MGM Grand Christmas Eve dinner with Las Vegas show through WeChat and couldn’t have been more disappointed. We arrived to a queue of other disappointed customers facing the same issues. The event had been over sold and they had run out of tables to accommodate the waiting guests. We were not given a time to wait and we’re just expected to put up with it after paying over 800! After around 20 minutes we were taken through to a table they had brought out right at the back of the buffet area with no view of the stage. The queues for food were ridiculously busy and slow. The drinks tables were running low and not being topped up. We decided to get a refund and go somewhere else but would struggle as everything else had already started and we would now over 2 hours late to any events. Luckily we were able to enjoy the rest of our night at the Marriott which was much better than the event at the MGM.

Only stayed for one day fortunatetly, but it was enough to determine that the Sanya MGM is nothing more than a theme park replica of a nice hotel.
The food isn't great, the facilities are already falling apart and the whole place is purely geared towards children.
Theres a little train that drives around the resort just like at an amusement park and the 'adults only pool' has been converted into another birthday party area for 7 year olds.
Probably a great place to bring your kids, but as a couple it was not great.

This is a very long review but please read it through.

Please take this review to heart. Do not dismiss it as one bad review compared to how many other good or so so reviews may be out there to offset it. This is not an offhand “Yeah, nice hotel” review but instead a heartfelt well thought out one and should be taken as such.

We stayed at this hotel and spent a fair amount of money there. We paid for the Premier Suite, this huge suite on the top floor with balconies on two sides. It should have been great and while art first I was willing to overlook a lot of the small imperfections what happened to me later simply ruined my mood for much of our stay there and so now I would rather let everyone know how I really felt.

As I said we paid for this really big suite. It consisted of a large living room with TV and access to one of the two balconies previously mentioned, a dining area but no place to cook or prepare food, one full bathroom and a changing room(?) off the main living area, plus a smaller living room with small couch and TV that for the life of me I can not understand why this is even provided. Then there is the large one bedroom which had access to both balconies, a changing room/closet and large bathroom with tub and separate shower and it also had access to the side balcony.

All this should have been great except it wasn’t. Here is a list of the irritations with the HUGE vacation damaging one at the end.

* Bedroom closet consisted of two closets in one room. But what good is a closet if you don’t have hangers to hang your clothes from? They put a handful of hangers in just one of the two closets and none in the other.
* No place in the closet for your bag except on the seating built in for you to use while changing. Fairly useless when it is used to keep your bag there.
* Mold and mildew in the bathroom shower area.
* Tile grout coming off and obviously sloppy workmanship, how many stars is this hotel?
* The windows all through the rooms have electronically controlled curtains or at least some of them do. You are left to guess which is which and in the end it doesn’t matter because half of the controls don’t work anyway. Same goes for the lighting controls. The lighting for the changing room is controlled by the control pad by the bed and cannot be switched off. It can but after a few seconds the light comes back on by itself, annoying and a waste of electricity as it ends up staying on all night and all day.
* The glass on the side balcony was absolutely filthy. Looked like it has never been cleaned, ever.
* The big huge balcony is right in the sun. Should be luxurious but it needs an umbrella or sun shade of some sort.
* OK Big annoyance here: We were three people in this suite. Me, my wife and our 19 year old son. We had to request an extra bed. So, where does the extra bed go in this huge suite? In the master bedroom. We had to pay extra money for this extra bed. However, a day later, upon investigation I find that the couch in that extra little living room is actually the kind of couch that has a fold out bed inside it! We were not told about this. Instead we are charged extra money for an extra bed placed in our room while we could’ve had more privacy for all and probably a better night’s sleep for our son. This gave men the distinct impression of being ripped off.
* The pool bar is a joke. They offer 3 alcoholic drinks and 3 non-alcoholic ones only. The rest being juices, sodas and the like. But of the 3 alcoholic drinks only two were available and they were not common drinks. No Strawberry Daiquiris a staple of poolside bars, no Pina Coladas, what are they thinking!? Also, no milkshakes available which many kids, including mine would like.
* We went to the big poolside BBQ one night. The food was good but the staff kept bothering us to pay the bill early when we were trying to enjoy our meal. This was very annoying.
* Speaking of the poolside restaurant, on top of achingly slow service, where it took 30 minutes to get a drink the first day when there were no other customers to keep them busy we had one instance where my son’s girlfriend was refused a straw for her tall ice filled drink. When asked why, they said it was for “safety/security reasons” (Because We were there during the time of the Boao Forum for Asia) and offered to change her drink into a different glass instead. When they were saying safety/security reasons they were not talking about her safety. They were implying that they felt giving her a straw was a threat to someone else’s safety. A PLASTIC STRAW. They refused to allow her to have a flimsy little plastic straw because they felt there was some implied threat whereas they did not worry at all about the METAL KNIVES and other utensils that they were giving everyone? How does this make sense to anyone??? Eventually after much complaining they gave the girl a straw. Such a hassle.
* As mentioned we were there during the time of the Boao Forum for Asia so the security was very high. There were heavy security screening processes if you left and wanted to re-enter the hotel. Another major inconvenience being that we had a car but no one was being allowed to park at the hotel but instead we had to park in the public car park nearly a kilometer down the road. Even if you went to the hotels beach you could not take a bag down to the beach and you had to take a room key otherwise they would not let you re-enter. At night you were not allowed to stroll the beach past either end of hotel property. Most importantly all the beach activities such as jet skiing etc were curtailed, not allowed at all. We were not informed this would be the case before booking our stay. So, we paid full price for a hotel stay but not allowed full benefit, not allowed to enjoy as much as we normally would have. Made for quite a boring time.
* Lastly, the biggest issue. Much of my time at this hotel was spent sitting in front of their Flywave flowrider style surf machine watching my 19 year old son having a good time. I wanted to have a good time together with him but instead I was relegated to sitting there infuriated after suffering the humiliation of age discrimination! I’m 55 years old. Is this old? We elect presidents to run countries that are older than this, we have CEOs of multi billion dollar companies that are older than this. I myself am a Helicopter pilot and I like many other pilots endure the stresses of flying both the simulators for training and the multimillion dollar aircraft full of often extremely important VIPs and heads of state. BUT MGM Grand Sanya THINKS I AM TOO OLD AND TOO FEEBLE TO SURVIVE PLAYING ON THIS ATTRACTION!!!!!! I can Ski, I can Snowboard, I can fly helicopters, I can go mountain biking, wake boarding, whatever BUT MGM management in China thinks I and you too if you are over 50 are too old for this!

I could’ve had shared nice Father/Son bonding experience with my son but instead I was left feeling irritated and unhappy for much of my vacation thanks to MGM Chinese management. I doubt MGM in the US would ever consider making a policy like this that is blatantly discriminatory regarding age. They may ask you to sign a waiver and that would be it.

That said I will NEVER stay at MGM Grand Sanya again and urge anyone over 50 not to either if you don’t enjoy discriminatory policies.

This was our first time in MGM Grand. We stayed here two nights, as the price was somewhat ok. I have been in Sanya almost every year since 2004.

Check-in:
Oh mine, truly slow and sorry to say hotel personnel appeared not to be on top of their job. Over 20 guests were waiting for quite some time. I did see lot of hotel personnel, but most were just bystanders. They didn't offer us anything during the check-in. Lobby area itself looks kind of tasteless.

Hotel room:
Rather good room. Spacious, no issues at all and no sign of wear and tear. We had direct seaview room, which I would really recommend. High floor of course. Bed and pillows were good for western taste, i.e. soft enough. Hotel room itself is fully competitive compared with any Hilton, Sheraton etc. Actually it is better than the rooms in Yalong Bay's Hilton and Sheraton. But clearly behind St.Regis just as an example.

Swimming pools:
These are fully ok. As we were here in December it was important that hotel offers two heated pools to guests. Unfortunately one is reserved only for club members. Lifeguard was active at their small heated "public" pool. For kids they do have another shallow pool with slides. This is warm enough also in winter time although it has no heating.

Beach:
Very good in general. Absolutely nothing to complain here. Good Yalong Bay standard quality. Swimming area in sea is big enough for those who prefer to swim in the sea (few). Sea doesn't deepen quickly and there are no strong currents really. On windy days they had yellow flag, so it was good to be able to get in to the sea (no whistleblowers). They have lifeguard on the beach, which is a must.

Breakfast:
Well most of their customers are Chinese. The western food selection was bit limited, but everything was ok. Fruits were good. Well their coffee was below par. Also they didn't understand my English - so I ended up speaking in Chinese. It is good to note that this hotel does charge kids for breakfast already, if they are 6 years old. This means 120 kuai extra per breakfast per head. Many competing hotels don't charge this young kids. E.g. St Regis in Yalong Bay charges kids who are 10 years or older.

Restaurants:
We didn't eat our lunches or dinners in the hotel. Lunch is not necessary after bigger breakfast really. We had most dinners in Hexi road. Seafood is great and cheap there. Ok, taxi 2 ways cost around 130 kuai.

Other guests:
Lot of people from Dongbei. Also many from Sichuan. No westerners really. Zero Russians as well. Some Japanese. Guests were ok behaving, but some local kids were typically misbehaving. Some parents were just clueless with their hysterically crying kids.

Improvement areas:
-Check-in (really a mess now)
-English skills in general
-Service attitude & skills (hit and miss)
-Breakfast (western food selection should be wider)

To sum it up:
This is a solid 4 star hotel. Not a luxury resort by any means. It is rather good place to go with your younger kids (0-12 years old). However, language skills are limited and I would really recommend this hotel for those who can also speak Chinese. I prefer bit more premium hotels and would not stay here again.

I just cancelled my reservation for 2 seaview rooms, because of missing customer focus.
My family and I wanted to try first time the new hotel and asked whether the pickup from the airport is included or not. The answer was, we have to pay additional 960 RMB for the very short transfer to the hotel. It is not about the price, because the stay would be way beyond 20000 RMB for a few days. We stayed very often in different 5 star hotels in Sanya and around the world and a pickup was always part of a 5 star service. Now 2 rooms with seaview are not enough for MGM, you have to take a suite, than you are a better and welcome customer. The rest is just getting a 3 to 4 star treatment.
I never will stay in an MGM hotel. Thank you very much !

This is a relatively new and luxurious hotel in Yalong Bay, Sanya, China. We were here for 3 nights. We were originally slated to be here for 5 nights but we decided to check out earlier and went to the nearby Marriott instead for the rest of our stay. In room humidity is a major problem and it is not corrected by dehumidifier in the room. The TV in the room is very small and does not contain HD content. Of course, most people are here for the beach and what not but somehow this small TV without HD content just does not go along with a luxury hotel such as this. Restaurants are very expensive and quality of food does not synchronize with the price you pay. Service is also mediocre and nothing is ever done about longlines at the front desk serving people checking in and out. Overall, quite disappointed with this hotel and likely would not return should our travels take us to Sanya again in the future.
