We arrived at the hotel by taxi and were awaited by the hotels concierges. They took our bags while we proceeded to check-in. Always take a meter taxi and not the guys that prompt you into their cars, they are ALWAYS more expensive. The hotel is huge featuring around 1000 rooms while we were there the hotel was only at 25% capacity I think.

The reception desk was staffed by atleast 10. They however had some troubles finding our reservations though it should not have been hard to find under our family names..

Anyway we checked in into our deluxe seaview room on the 9th floor. The rooms are large clean and spacious and are equipped with all the amenities you might need including an ethernet cable for the free internet. Free wifi is available in the lobby.

The airconditioning works well (if you manage to figure out the Chinese remote control ;))
We requested a king bed which sleeps very well, it had a hard matress which I've liked alot.

There is hardly any noise from outside eventhough we were located streetside.

The hotel has one large indoor pool which is heated and several outdoor pools. Note however should the hotel be full of non chinese guests (which I think will not be the case very often) there could be a shortage of sun loungers.

The staff at the pool and poolbar hardly speak any English so if you have any other question other than the normal ones you'll have a hard time getting an answer from them. It has to be said though all the staff are VERY helpful and will do their utmost to help you.

Everything is kept clean and immaculate including the many trees and other various plants on the domain.

Drinks are priced okay at the pool but it's much cheaper to buy them at a supermarket or at the small store outside the hotel.

The breakfast starts early enough and ends SHARP at 10.30, don't bother coming later because all the food will be gone. Anyway 10.30 is a nice time to close so just come earlier!
The breakfast has both Chinese and Western options and varies during the week.

We did one hotel restaurant Kwok Heung Kok I believe which is also reasonably priced and has some good options though when it's calm in the hotel they might not have everything you need.

Finding places to eat in walking distance of the hotel is difficult except if you like street bbq's and shady places.

Take a cheap taxi (not the njam njam ladies on their mopeds, you'll know when you get there) and ask them to go to Jiefang Lu which is a big shopping street with supermarkets and others. Always use the meter you'll come out more expensive if you arrange a price.

While you are driving there there is one other big street on the left hand side of this street after a while you'll see other seafood restaurants. Keep going a bit further and there you will see more Western/American style restaurant buildings the food however is 100% Chinese but the quality is superb and cheap! Don't bother asking the concierges where to go they don't have a clue. The one we ate at most of the time was a stylish restaurant with dark yellow neon lights, you'll notice it when you drive by.

If you like good seafood at a good price go to the Chunyuan Seafood Plaza just behind Jiefang Lu. You can select the fish you want and then take them to a small stand to prepare everything for also a cheap price! You will pay a fixed price per type of fish you bring in. We had around 7 kinds and did not pay more than 69 RMB to prepare everything.

Back to the hotel the check-out was flawless and we left satisfied.

If you like the hustle and bustle China can bring you definately stay in a hotel in Sanya bay, if you like to stay in your hotel the whole time take a hotel at Yalong Bay (be aware there is litterly NOTHING to see/do in Yalong bay except for the three restaurants that are extremely overpriced). Yalong bay features more upscale hotels too but you'll pay the price.

If you need a city map the concierge desk has them, just ask one.

If you have more questions or want to know the exact names of the restaurants we went too message me please.

The hotel is just huge. Walking from one end to the other just takes long time. That is what happened to us. Our room is at the end of West wing and the breakfast is at the end of East wing. Imagine walking more than 10 minutes to the breakfast area alone. And we were with my elderly parents. The wonderful breakfast spread did little to make up for it. The toilets cleanliness is just not 5 star. If this is a 3 star hotel, I will accept it. Water will flood your toilet when you shower as the shower screen is not water tight. After every shower, the toilet will flood and that's when you can see if the toilet is clean or not. However they have nice beaches even though it is not directly in front of the hotel. There is still a 5 minutes walk to it. Appreciate that they have a wheelchair to borrow but you still need to put deposit even though the reception already requested for a deposit when you checked in. Will not stay at this hotel again.

When there with family of 6 people. The hotel room is nice and comfortable, the breakfast is good, international style, the Concierge was very polite and helpful and the out door pool is not bad also. The out-door playground for children is not bad to let the children to play.

The only thing looks bad in the indoor pool looks very dirty, the lifts needs improvement, the garden needs more area cleaning.

The hotel shows 5-6 pools on their listing but only 2 are operational. The main swimming pool has cockroaches swimming together with guests and manager does not care because it’s located outside. (But kids swim in this pool mostly.) The Korean Palace Restaurant is truly 15% Korean to say at best.

First of all I want to apologize form my bad English – it´s not my mother language but I hope you can follow.

To the topic – the Howard Johnson in Sanya -
I will start with the conclusion: AVOID IT!

So why is that? To be fair, it´s not an “all bad” place. No, there are really some pros to the place.
It has got a nice pool, beautiful garden, very good access to a nice beach. The breakfast is not the best but far from bad and still above average. The rooms are definitely not my taste but other people might like them.

You might ask yourself how I can come to the conclusion that the HoJo should be avoided.
Well – lets say the hardware is nice but the software needs improvement. If it happens that you´ve got a problem, you will find no help there. Of course, the stuff is trained to listen to you - nod to your words and if appropriate apologize. But they won’t understand a word you are saying. Of course they are not able to speak English which would be an explanation. But I am able to speak Chinese – so it´s not a language barrier I am talking about.

Just an example: First day – no room service. Second day – No room service till the afternoon. But we were able to catch the cleaning persoal on the floor and led them to our room. They quickly do the bedsheets and before we can turn our heads they are gone again. Trashcans not emptied no fresh towels, floor not wiped and so on – just the bedsheets. So the third day we put out the sign at our door handle saying “room service please” and went into town. When we returned in the evening the picture is the same. The beds are made but everything else is untouched. The garbage cans are stinking by then. So I go down to the reception and ask for room service. The poor girls job at the reception is to nod and apologize and agree. But will she do anything? You got it. Two hours later there is still no sign of the cleaning personal.

For many years as a student I used to stay in cheap youth hostels. You have to bring out your garbage by yourself. In general I really have no problem with that. But I should be informed about this unusual practice – after all the HoJo is no youth hostel.

I could go on with other examples but I think it´s better to describe my general impression of the stuff and the hotel. Are they unfriendly? No. In fact they are very friendly. Are they unwilling to help? No – I think most of them are trying their best.

But will they help you? No, and that´s the problem. They are just very untrained. There is no responsible superior to be found. And the poor reception girls are only trained to nod and apologize and agree.

So my impression of this place is that they are trying to reduce costs by using the cheapest labor they can find. I´d also guess that they are understuffed.

I traveled a lot and stayed in many places. I do know that the number of stars is not directly correlating with the quality of the hotel. But the HoJo in Sanya sets a steep example for a great facade but nothing behind it.
So my final words: You will easily find cheaper places that deliver a better package.

At first, the visitor will be impressed by the photos, the amenities and everything that the hotel can offer. Yes indeed it looks a very impressive resort...until the visitor arrives at the front desk. There the disappointments start and continue until the time one leaves, wishing he never came to this place. To be totally fair, indeed the hotel could have been an ideal resort, since it has "potential" such as close distance to the beach, exotic vegetation and architecture, many amenities, good food (e.g. the Caribbean BBQ),big swimming pools, playgrounds, good location near shops and means of transportation and many more. However, the disadvantages cancel all the positive aspects and all of them can be attributed to the human factor and especially the insufficient management. In order to be specific, some of the disadvantages are (but not limited to):
a) Staff hardly (I mean really hardly) understands any foreign language apart from Chinese. In such cases you might ask for example for a little something in your breakfast or at the front desk and you will be ignored.
b) Some of the staff at the front desk do not show manners and they are not tolerant especially with kids.
c) Your struggle hard even for using your mastercard. Better to have rmb in cash in order to deal with them.
d) Various rooms have problems. For example in our case the bathroom-toilet was "isolated" from the main room with the use of... a single, thin curtain. Moreover, due to humidity, moisture some fungus infection was noticed inbetween the tiles of the toilet.
e) Cleanliness generally its not their strong point as well as their manners. Examples: I) When we arrived we wanted to drink some refreshment at the tables of the bar near reception. We noticed that in the near by tables, various people that didn't seem to be guests were barefoot with their feet on the tables where a little after or before someone would eat or drink something. II) Swimming pools are really germ nests. Open from early morning hours to very late night hours for a real vast crowd of swimmers and in consideration that have a low depth and the water is staying long under the strong sun...it is really a question whether can be satisfactorily cleaned.
f) Safety...hmmmm lets say there are questions. We experienced damaged lights and exposed cables in one of the swimming pools. I didn't know the exact IP of the cables but the fact itself and the absence of maintenance was really frustrating.
g) You can not enjoy your drink near the pool but you have to go to the bar. For unknown reasons no drinks, food or smoking (even drinks in plastic cups) are officially allowed near the pool.
h) The whole system and "tastes" are "concentrated"/"focused" on Chinese Tourists.
i) The beach of the hotel will not relax you. The sea doesn't seem nice for a swim. Many local sellers are coming to sell their goods, whilst a policeman was patrolling and there were warnings about the safety of your unattended stuff.

Conclusively... the result was negative and the disappointment big.

I don't think I have ever stayed in a filthier room before, despite extensive travel through Africa.

I hope not to have contracted an infection after reluctantly entering the shower cubicle.

Lunch in the western restaurant yielded a 60 minute wait for spaghetti with tomato sauce. Breakfast makes a distribution center for food aid look like a Michelin star affair.

Staff is indifferent at best, outright rude at worst.

Sanya is not the place for good service but even at these low standards Howard Johnson is bottom of the barrel.

Thankfully I was here on business and didn't have to spend time "enjoying" the other facilities.

Don't come here.

This hotel markets itself as luxurious yet the hotel fell short of such the 5-star rating it claims to have. The rooms itself are fine but there is a weird curtain separation to the bathroom that offers no privacy. The problem is the quality of the hotel's amenities. The pool seems a little dirty and dated and the underground passage to the beach is too dark. The beach itself is also quite dirty however this part of Sanya isn't particularly known for its beautiful beach. The breakfast choice is quite limited and the waitstaff seem quite apathetic to the needs of their customers. I think this is a promising hotel but needs a reality check to really propel itself forward.

This is a crap hotel. They may call it four and a half star as much as they want. On the first look it might look like a good hotel but they don´t meet up to any standards on being a five star hotel. It is run down. There are lots of pools and they are nice and was not crowded but there are chunks of tiles are missing. The covers on the sun beds are worn out and holes in them. The rooms are ok but it is open between the bathroom/toilet and the bedroom with just a thin curtain in-between that you can see through. The lobby was beautiful and lovely to spend time in.

The breakfast is ok when it comes to choices but they don´t keep the food cold so we were hesitant about trying lots of it. If you are down to breakfast late they will be out of lots of things. Sometimes they bring it out if you ask. There is no water to drink, just juices and coffee/the. The service is terrible.

The service is horrible. You have to clear the breakfast table yourself if there is no free table. When you check in you leave a 1000 RMB deposit which is normal but when you order from room service or anything else you sign to the room they deduct it from the deposit. No one tells you this. When we went and had a massage we didn't have enough left on our deposit so they wanted us to pay with card or cash. Told them I could go to my room and get a card and come back. They looked scared and said that they wanted to follow me. So we went back to the room with a woman following us like criminals. It is not the woman's fault. She was nice but they system is strange. Is that how you show your customers trust? Then we ordered room service and we had to pay cash. Again it felt like they didn't trust us.

You have to sing to get towels at the pool and you have to return them and make sure they sign that as well or you have to pay 300 RMB when you check out.

The service is terrible. Hardly none speak English and the once that do speak badly. But then we are in China and not that many western turists around. Most of them are trying. The wifi is very unreliable. Sometimes it works fine and other times it doesn't work at all. It is better in the lobby then in the rooms. They keep knocking and ringing the door in the morning to clean even if you have the pressed the button do not disturb.

It is not even in a nice location. Choose another hotel.

Hotel has nice grounds and the lobby and bar area is very nice, very exotic. But: The rooms definitely need a makeover. And the most important information for all non-chinese travellers: Between the bathroom and the bed is no wall. Yes, no wall, no glas or anything else. Obviously the chinese and russian guests don’t mind, but we were a little bit shocked, as we are used to a little privacy even as a couple. But this is china and things work differently here.

That’s also true for a lot of other things: If you ask for an airport pick up (as advertised) via email you won’t get an answer, as the staff speaks little to none English or any other language except maybe russian (even though russian guests also had difficulties) or chinese (we’re not sure that this really works, because we saw that even Chinese people had also difficulties to get noticed and understood by the staff)...

Don’t let the taxi driver’s rip you off. Take a taxi with a meter and insist that it will be used. Be prepared that the driver will go on the wrong lane and does other “mad” stuff while driving. It’s normal here and if you can’t handle that, Hainan is not the place for you. Do always have the Chinese name of the Hotel with you and before going anywhere, write down the destination in Chinese Signs on a piece of paper. Unfortunately the hotel staff is of no use to translate something or write something down for you, but their business card (you can get it at the reception) is of great use, because it shows frequent destinations in English and Chinese.

Breakfast is actually great with an impressive variety of Chinese and Western options. Dinner is another thing. The Barbeque Buffet (all you can eat and beer and softdrinks, every day except mondays and wednesdays) is impressive and really tasty, but also very expensive (over 40 US Dollars per Person). The restaurants (1 Chinese, 1 Western, 1 Korean) aren’t worth the money. So if you want something else, you need to try your luck at one of the little restaurants across the street or at the supermarket (be careful, one of them gave us fake change) or go to the KFC around ten minutes walk from the hotel or go via taxi or bus (if you can read the schedule) to Sanya Downtown (around 30 RMB per way with taxi).

The beach is accessible via a little tunnel. And it may not be the greatest beach in the world, but it’s great fun watching the vendors and guards hassle about who can litter how long on the hotel’s beach area. The vendor’s can be a little bit annoying, just make it clear that you don’t want to buy something. Pool area is also nice, but sometimes a little loud and the water is not very deep.

Be aware that this is not a five star hotel according to Western standards. We wouldn’t come back here honestly. The location is not very convenient as you will always need transportation if you don’t want to stay in the Resort all the time. There may be better accommodation options in Sanya (but they may be also a lot more expensive). Going to Sanya is an experience of its own kind. But you don’t need to have that experience under all circumstances.
