I was skeptical about the resort reading the previous comments but I found it to be a pleasant surprise. The room were very clean, staff were polite and helpful, breakfast was good and the swimming pool was quite ok. Beach is around 15 mins walk from the resort.

Only setback would be that the restaurants in the hotel can be improved as there are not a lot of options outside the hotel and the check-in is a bit slow. English is an issue but it's the same in most hotels and resorts in China so better to have an open mind about that.

The dining hall has a great atmosphere. It’s suitable for large parties. There is a variety of food to choose from. The Turkish items were very good. Live music was lively. The staff goes the extra mile. Highly recommended.

The hotel needs some serious TLC, everywhere you go from entrance to pools some and most things are not operational. In the rooms so many things are just falling apart and the gardens are not kept well. I was really disappointed.

The service on the most part was excellent. Soda bar was not good and a request to the staff felt like I was giving them so much work and could see they didn’t want to do their job.

We were fortunate to stay in a villa with our own pool and that was the saving grace. The cleaning staff was amazing there and so friendly so thank you to 黑阿姨.

The assistant manager Mike was very helpful and kind as well as the restaurant manager Gerry they truly went above and beyond to help.

Now the beach situation is really a walk to get to as you need to go through the adjacent Marriot hotel to get there but the ocean there is really beautiful.

This is not a resort I will likely recommend or stay at again. Best to choose the other Pullman in Sanya Bay which we’ve stayed at twice previously.

As Accor platinum members we always use the website to check for lounges as it’s a great perk and it stated the hotel does have one which it doesn’t. The dinner buffet was at least good but pricy.

Overrated hotel without beachfront property. The service was really bad. Always a wait at the front desk. They gave away our reserved table for the Christmas dinner and then tried to seat us behind the stage and then refused to get the manager involved when we didn’t accept. Would not recommend anyone to stay at this hotel. There are plenty of better hotels for the same price to choose from. Do NOT stay here if you want to be treated right as a guest.

Yalong Bay is always good choice to stay but big minus, that Pullman Yalong Bay Villas dont have good beach area. Always need to go to different hotels for confortable chairs and towels.
Only some staff speaks English so comunication is not the best.
Otherwise good value for money, thanks for upgrade to villa. Overall good time even Pullman Sanya Bay is different experience in terms of service.

This, by far, is the best, private resort experience I've had in 9 years living in China. This is my 4th trip to Sanya, previous ones were terrible (see the review of the Day's Inn). Friends had told me about the Pullman Villa's, and I decided to try.

I stayed for a few days in a Myanmar Villa, and from the Moment I arrived, until them moment I sadly left, I did not leave the totally private villa with it's private pool, huge Jacuzzi, massage hut, TV room, mini bar, bedroom etc... it was perfect for a great LGBT get-a-way.

Staff at front desk spoke English, and greeted well. Driven to the villa in golf cart, room service combines both an array of French style western and Chinese dishes. Daily housekeeping were lovely and did not lift an eyelid. Really felt comfortable there. (I think I was naked most of the time in the sun and pool).

The villa is fitted out really well, direct from the bedroom into the pool, direct from the pool into a rain shower, normal shower, bathtub etc... great amenities. All of the villa doors and windows open to pool view, and great ceiling fans, and/or AC.

The worst part about the experience was leaving. I cannot wait to return.

I have stayed at Pullman Yalong Bay resort 5 times since 2007, the latest in April, 2015. At this visit, I found the precipitous fall in the facilities and services appalling.

Each time, I rented a villa with a private pool: this time in a Nanyang villa. There were more than 10 deficiencies: 1 of the 2 TVs needed to be replaced. Both telephones had a buzzing background noise. The safe was jammed open by a previous hotel patron. The faucet “burst” with gushing water. The Jacuzzi jets were not functional. A drawer could not be closed. The main bedroom door could only be closed with a push and a squeaking sound. There were 2 halfe-panel folding doors in a separate gazebo-type sitting area. One was difficult to open, and the other slid into the closed position on its own. I felt like being a “home inspector”. The response time was reasonable, but, the disruption to “quiet enjoyment” was irreparable.

The 3 days I spent in the resort were in the “Golden Week” of National Day. I expected high demand on the services. Indeed, the resort was fully booked. But, I paid 3 times the price quoted in a following week. The hotel staff repeatedly apologized for being short-staffed. It appeared that the hotel did not hire more staff to handle the load. In particular, transport between the main building and the villas requires an electric cart. I was given the understanding that only 3 such carts were in operation.

I forgot to take the room entrance cards one night. I realized this as I was at the door of the villa. I offered to return to the lobby, but the driver promised to deliver the card “promptly”. It was an hour later that he called! (Fortunately, I walked to a main road and flagged down a maintenance staff to use his key for entry. (By that time, the team of repair staff kind of “knew” me, from their various visits to my villa.) I later found out that the failed driver was the “supervisor” for the transport team!

When I called the front desk or appeared in person, asking for a specific staff by name, he or she was invariably “busy”. They did respond, some minutes later. A front desk staff commented that my Mandarin (Putonghua) was “not good”. The next day when we met, I offered to converse in English. She immediately declined, and “would try to make an effort to listen to my Mandarin”, and it worked!
The same front desk staff made mention that a fruit knife and a plate are placed in the pantry area of the room. When I did need to use them the next night, there wasn’t. I called the operator, but was not able to speak to the front desk staff. The restaurant staff who delivered the plate (without the knife) asked for 5 CNY. He explained that “many hotel guests took the plates when checking out”. I gladly paid. [The knife was delivered from a different service division.] Such change in the policy began only in the last 18 months – since my last stay. I would think that my profile with the Resort, and the fact that I placed a Canadian credit card at check-in may allow certain exception.

I did notice a change in the demographics of the hotel guests. During this stay, I did not hear – neither from the patrons nor from the staff – speak English: not once.

On 1 evening, hosuekeeping totally skipped the turn-down service. The freshening of the rooms was finally carried out by 10:30 PM – again at much of a violation of the private time. In the main dining room, I asked for a spoon – a simple, white porcelain, Chinese-styled spoon. (Only the metallic, Western-style ones were available at the breakfast session.) Two servers failed to understand. They called in the manager who took no time to bring me one from the kitchen.

Finally, the checking-out. A front desk staff was able to process charges to my Mastercard, but was unable to cancel an earlier deposit. She tried on all 4 mobile credit card processors. It took the manager to remind her to enter a certain code from the previous printed document. A usual 20-second procedure took 20 minutes, while the limousine driver was waiting.

I understood that there are 26 “5- or 6-star” hotels in that strip of Yalong Bay. I will book into another facility in my next visit.

It`s the 3th time I come there and the others times my staying was really great. I cannot say the same for this time. First when we arrived nobody to take care of our luggages, so we had to go from taxi to reception pushing them. Something I don`t expect from a Pullman Hotel. The villa are nice as usual, but the are getting old and many furniture are over used. There is no more beach place to stay as all was destroyed by a hurricane, but that happened 2 weeks ago and still not in order. Not a really stairs are provided to go to sea, no food service, and if you want to stay there you are so closed with your neighbour. As we come for being in beach was a totally deception. Nobody inform us about this.
When we made the check out I had to pay the bill of the room, even I booked my room with accor reservation center and It was maden with a prepaid reservation. Scandalous. I never go there anymore.

SUMMARY: Once the spectacular resort secret in China is now physically showing it’s age, but more importantly, the F&B department destroys any ability for a non-Chinese speaker to stay here with any modicum of comfort or ease. I’m generously giving it 3 stars since I think domestic tourists will enjoy it. But for international tourists I would suggest sadly this is a 2 star property now

DETAIL:

I’ve been coming here for several years. My 1st TripAdvisor review from April 2013 calls this property “BEST PRIVATE resort experience in China”, but each visit since it has progressively gotten worse, largely due to F&B operations and obvious refocus on 100% domestic tourists rather than 80% domestic and 20% international .

Sadly, this is my last time here in the beautiful private Myanmar private pool villas. While the housekeeping and pool maintenance staff, and duty manager “Tony” have all been very, very good, the F&B department has destroyed this resort, as indicated by the other reviews too.

I do not speak Chinese, and as a result, I only stay in 4 or 5 star properties within China, since their stars are granted by the Chinese Government, in part, due to their ability to service international guests in English. The Pullman in Yalong Bay falls short here.

No English spoken at room service or by calling the “guest service” number. Due to remote location in Yalong Bay, there are no other choices for food than hotel. No menu’s are even provided in room, except a WeChat bar code [see photo] to order in Chinese from within WeChat with a partial menu, with no breakfast options, and different pricing than their actual menus.

On the first day, using translation from a front desk staffer, I got room service to deliver me a menu in English (which was photocopied onto the back of this weeks guest folio information with other guests names, rate codes etc.. etc..) - [see photo - where for privacy I have blurred out guests private info]

From this photocopied menu, when I needed food or drinks (3-4 times a day), I would call room service, and their system would show my villa number. They would hang up (often after an obligatory giggle) and a room service staffer would come by about 20 minutes later where I would point to English, and he would then refer to the Chinese, and then place an order. 30-40 minutes later, food would arrive. No ability to deviate from menu of course, but at least it kind of worked…. Until I realized that prices on that menu were higher than current. (Example: Beef Burger with either a beer or soft drink is RMB 98 on tentcard offer in room, yet the WeChat menu and printed menu is RMB 108 without beverage (price difference of RMB 28)

On my second day I called room service at 11am, ready to request for someone to come to villa so I could order a beef burger and coffee — but in very broken English was told “no kitchen open, no food no cafe”. I waited a few hours, and tried again, got a different room service attendant, who did not speak any English, and magically the room service order person arrived at the villa 20 minutes later to take my order.

The food quality is very hit and miss — certainly not an epicurean delight. Both the Mushroom Cream Soup and Carbonara Pasta came differently each day - both in taste, ingredients and presentation — no standardization clearly. Expect basic food with a focus on seafood and Chinese style. Since I was staying for a week, I ended up hiring a live-in bilingual “food assistant” who for 2.5 days went out of the hotel to find me better food and brought back to hotel. Since I was already paying for 2 people in Villa, he got use of the pool and villa, and I got food and a lower cost. Worked well, until he had to leave to return to his family.

Online I met one of the staff at the adjacent Ritz Carlton, where I had stayed before, who took pity on me, and coordinated for delivery of coffee from the Ritz Carlton to me at the villa. Apparently, the Pullman has a reputation with their F&B in the Yalong Bay Area.

The difficulties I had with getting food, coffee and drinks during my stay apparently are not uncommon according to some other staff here. In my opinion the only solution would be for Accor to dismiss the Director of F&B at this hotel, and get an F&B management team into overhaul the entire process from service through cuisine.

Apart from F&B, the villa’s are starting to show their age. Wooden outdoor elements in particular are rotting and broken [see photo]. On checkin, it took 2 attempts to find a villa for the week that had a functioning clean pool, filled with water, and furnishings.

Two of the white towels on arrival had large “poo” stains on them — disgusting — obviously not washed from previous guests. I used the pool towels instead (what a difference an “L” makes).

BUT, once settled into the villa, the good memories of previous visits come back — total privacy thanks to high solid fence surround your own compound with magnificent layout (of the Myanmar villas) with separate outdoor air conditioned living room (with TV) that faces the pool, 1.3m deep fresh water pool that is warm year round (however no steps, only ladders), an outdoor pagoda (used to have massage mats and was a great place to lay in the sun and read) and your main air conditioned living area, including bedroom with quality bedding, small desk (with both WiFi and Ethernet), closet with safe, mini-bar (not replenished during my stay unless I specifically requested), 2 person jacuzzi tub, bathroom with separate toilet, indoor shower and outdoor shower.

As an aside, in my booking I had requested hotel transportation airport pickup service, and provided the flight details. No show from hotel at airport, so I took a taxi. (At least I saved money on their mistake)

As another aside, I had pre-confirmed a delayed checkout until 4pm, however decided I did not need that time and would prefer to get to airport earlier to have breakfast lunch and coffee, so I told hotel I would checkout at 1:00pm and double confirmed with duty manager the night before. At 12:10pm on day of checkout I got a phone call to say I had to leave now. I explained the above, she agreed 12:30pm to have golf cart at villa to bring me to lobby. I quickly pack and stand in sun outside my villa at 12:30pm as requested, to have their cart arrive at 12:52pm (after I made 2 calls enquiries on status).

At checkout I requested the fapiao (official receipt) and was told in broken English I need to scan some QR code to start that process when the hotel already has all my business fapiao information in the booking. After I mentioned to supervisor that the Chinese tax authorities may be interested in the Pullman’s lack of interest in supplying a fapiao, did the supervisor flip and do everything possible she could to ensure they would issue one (apparently to be mailed to my office in Shanghai).

THE GOOD: The villa layout, privacy and private pools (and of course leaving the property forever).

THE BAD: F&B (all aspects), wear and tear on villas, lack of English.

BEST ROOMS: Myanmar Villa’s offer great value for money. Ensure the villa / pool is fully functional (including AC) on arrival however, and move until you get one that meets your needs.

THE SECRET: If you use WeChat (a must in China), find an English speaking duty manager at checkin, and add him/her — then when problems arise, and they will, you have a lifeline. I did this with “Tony”, who kindly helped me order dinner (on his day off) remotely, with night time room service that would not take my order. I sent Tony photos of the photocopied menu and what I wanted, he placed the order for me. Thank you Tony!!!!!

A TIP: On arrival at airport, there is a small convenience shop to the right as you exit baggage claim — buy as much drinks and snacks as you can carry to stock your mini-bar and villa since just getting drinks delivered to your room will be a massive challenge for non-chinese speakers.
