This was our first holiday since the COVID lockdown and our staycation at the Shangrila Haikou hotel has been amazing. The rooms were clean and the pool and gardens reminded us of Phuket. Hotel service staff were warm and welcoming. Special thanks to Jerry the Executive Sous Chef and his team for taking care of us during all our meal times. The buffet dinner was good value for money, large variety of food and includes wine and beer. Shang Palace, the Chinese restaurant had fine Chinese cuisine that suited our tastes, and they kindly recommended we order half portions for minimum wastage.
We travelled over the Qing Ming / Easter weekend and the team organised special Easter egg painting as well as kids activities for our daughter.
The management staff speaks English but the rest of the team has very little English.
Overall I would strongly recommend this hotel. It’s like a home away from home. We will definitely go there again.

This is a great place for families. our stay was awesome. The beach was great and the staff was super friendly! We stayed in a 3br villa and our experience was tremendous. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a peaceful resort-style atmosphere that is also family-focused.

I’ve stayed in many Shangri-La hotels. This is the worst experience I have every had and I’m writing this while still staying here. The service is not 5 stars, the staff does nothing to ensure the comfort of the guests when other guest are disturbing others. In the gym they let guest come in wearing dresses and flip flops, children playing and mis-using equipment. It’s very awkward go work out while there are screaming kids, people making videos and people just sitting on equipment and not actually using it. Second is the service when pulling up in a car, no one there to greet us right when we arrived only once we were inside. Third is breakfast, the disorganization is amazing. Again no control or system in place when there isn’t enough tables. A lot of food is gone, staff struggles to keep up. Fourth, is the pool; the staff should remind guests to not spit like full on spit in the pool. I quickly got out. I don’t mind children playing but when I grown man is coughing up spit into the pool I feel disgusted and couldn’t get a work out in. Not to mention the towel the staff claimed was clean had so many stains on it. Lastly, I’m allergic to feather pillows and requested memory foam, at first they didn’t want to look and finally they brought 2 small foam pillows that are as hard as a rock, I’ve woke up in a lot of pain the last couple nights.

The only positive point was the house keeper. She gave amazing service and was helpful.

Overall, based on the location(far from anything) and service, there’s probably better hotel chains to stay at.

We were doubting to stay in this Shangri la in haiku because we had a bad experience with the sister hotel in
Sanya where in two nights we couldn't taste the seafood BBQ due to unruly behavior of some guests. However, it was not to be. We had a very personalized service and great hospitality standards. We took two rooms next to each other. The ocean view was unbelievable and so enchanting thanks to the very well detailed balcony ambience that made all more cosy. We stayed three days two nights and we felt really well looked after. Most of the personnel we interacted with had good English. The food offerings are one of the best cuisines you may find in whole hainan island. I would say the hotel is at par level with Mandarin Oriental Sanya. The evening buffet was much better managed and the guests around were of higher level than the ones we found at SL Sanya. My wife tried the SPA while I used the fitness club. Absolutely perfect the design, ambience, decor and service. The gym has top notch equipment, one of the best I have seen insofar. Well done I will be back for more and definitely I recommend this hotel to everyone.

My family booked a triple ocean room and two double room on 16 March. I have two elderly and two young children with me for this holiday.
Upon arrival, I was given 3 double rooms ( instead of one triple and 2 double) and the rooms were on different floors ( lvl 1, 2 and 5). I cannot accept rooms at different floors because I have to go to various rooms to ensure the well being of my parents and children. I was told that a big group has booked the hotel and they cannot do anything.
This kind of service is definitely unacceptable for Shangri la hotels.
I booked the rooms one month ago and yet they cannot provide me a triple room and rooms on the same floor upon arrival.
The management of Shangrila group needs to improve the service. If they cannot provide the rooms, they should not accept the booking. There are many 5 stars hotel I can go.

We (parents and two children 16 and 11) made a last minute decision to leave Hong Kong over the Chinese New Year holidays for a short break. Hainan Island is only an hour away, so good for a three night (or less) stay. Most of the resorts are in Sanya in the south of the Island, but our late decision meant that we could only get a hotel in the northern city of Haikou. I can't say anything about the location as we just relaxed in the hotel for three days. The hotel is on a beach, but I didn't see anybody using the beach except for short walks. There were no beach facilities or activities. The hotel is new, immaculate, and offers a nice sanctuary for a quiet break. Despite being nearly full for the holidays, the hotel never felt crowded or bustling. We spent time in the indoor pools and outdoor hot tubs, and lounged around in the hammocks, and mostly it seemed as if we had the place to ourselves. The outdoor pool was a bit chilly; no big surprise in February. The staff were uniformly friendly and very willing to help. They sometimes lacked in English skills, and need more experience in true five star hotel standards of service, but we could not have been made to feel more welcome. The food was excellent in each of the three restaurants that we tried, Italian, Chinese and international buffet. After a full dinner the night before, we preferred coffee and a light breakfast on the patio to the buffet breakfast, although it looked good. The rooms were spacious, well appointed and stocked, just as you would expect at a Shangri La hotel. The local golf course is by the Dye Group and is a good round, with plenty to think about on each hole. I guess that the hotel caters almost exclusively to Chinese customers, but we enjoyed it very much for a stress-free, do nothing vacation.

We had very bad experience in Shangri-La hotel Haikou. We checked in without any problem. But next day manager of hotel told us that we had to leave the hotel or check out from previos hotel. We explain him that previos hotel was booked by our company and we cannot manage this problem. It’s prerogative of our company. Manager said that we cannot leave in Shangri-La anymore, and had to check out. Our room was prepaid and I asked about money, who gonna reimburse? Manager said that it wasn’t his problem, booking provided by booking.com and they responsible for it. After talking to booking.com we were informed that we can get money back only if Hotel reimburse it. Then(before check out) we had mail from booking.com that our stay was canceled by hotel according agreement between costumer and hotel with penalty. So it was absolutely lie. Staff didn’t try to prevent conflict.
Condition of hotel is also not good. Too wearied and dirty furniture. swimming pool with mold.
Breakfast and dinner correspond with price. Area is good as well with nice view. There is pool bar with kind staff.

I've travelled a lot and lived in different parts of the world. This place is mesmerising. The service is brilliant. I lived in this hotel for 25 days for work. People are friendly and warm. Its a little far from town. There is basically not many places you can go our for food unless you have a car. You'll probably end up eating the buffet downstairs or in the chinese restaurant.

My family and I stayed there 3 nights during mid May 2013. This hotel is built in the newly developed area of Haikou close to Xixiu Beach and Sheraton. Like all newly developed area, it's located slightly further from the city centre (about 20mins drive). Airport is around 40mins from the hotel.

As this is a very new hotel (only about 6 months old) the occupancy at the hotel was not high so it felt rather 'empty'. Throughout our stay at the hotel, it was very quiet and lack of 'buzz' like a hotel would have. We chose this hotel because we wanted to have a tranquil place just to relax but this one was really too 'tranquil' for us.

Hotel Pros & Cons:

Pros:
- Grand and New...amazing hotel
- Rooms (very Shangri-la style). We stayed in the Premier Sea View Room
- Spectacular sea views
- huge room with a balcony
- Very friendly staff here. They really made you feel at home.
- Kool Cafe (food was ok for both breakfast and dinner)
- Shang Palace (very nice fine Chinese food)
- There's a little play area in Kool Cafe for the toddlers.
- The pools (both the main and kids) were hardly occupied.
- Great & FREE internet access - both wifi and LAN access available in rooms and hotel vicinity
(no wifi signals when you are in the outdoor pool area though)

Cons:
- Location (nothing close by). You are stuck in the hotel unless you take a car out.
- Would be good if there are more kids facilities. Kids pool was just a paddling pool.
- Free or paying (nominal fee) shuttle bus service to the city/airport would be great as the
hotel's location is really distant from everywhere else.
- Hotel's car transfer service is great but price a little pricy (RMB2300 for a half day car rental).
Be good if this could be reviewed.

Overall, very nice and relaxing place to visit. If you are looking at just spending some time within the hotel, this would be an ideal place. I would visit again for the sake of this hotel but not for Haikou in particular. Haikou is not really a touristic place and the weather is a real put off during the day. Reaching 38 degrees at 10am in the morning? Ouch this is a killer!

Well done to the team at Shangri-la Haikou and keep up the good work. I am sure it will be 'buzzing' next time I visit again.
