Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

In contrary to the experience other travellers seam to have had I really enjoyed me stay at the Foyer du marin. In the centre of Akwa tucked away from the busy main road it offers simple, air-conditioned and very clean rooms with adjacent bathrooms. I slept extremely well on a good mattress.
The garden around the pool is inviting, even more so the wooden terrace under a roof from which you overlook the port. Food is very good and for moderate prices.
You do need a car to get there and away though since the area in front of the hotel is dark and dodgy.
But they offer secure parking.
Even late at night when I came home the guard on my request served me a beer as a nightcap on the quiet terrace. I can't confirm a rude service.

We had spent almost two weeks in a village in NW Cameroon, about a 10-12 hour van ride away. We were exhausted and ready for cleanliness and good food. The Foyer du Marin has clean rooms, hot showers, and delicious meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We loved being refreshed in the pool and relaxing in the garden area.
It is also walking distance from a main street where there is shopping, restaurants, and even an air-conditioned ice cream store. We were able to store our luggage after checkout, before our late-at-night flight.

on the overall I would recomend this Hotel to anyone trying to mix Urban/ Traditional resort living in the heart of Douala, Stayed here 3/4 of my 39 days in Cameroon , move from Rooms to rooms , to the single bedroom apartement to the double room apartment , just one room was messy, some rooms had refrigerators which was cool , all apartments had refrigerators,
Friendly staff on the overall , just one crazy reception girl who wanted to give me lessons on the dress code to enter the reception area , she called "office" . I give her a break , because i guess she has never been to real hotels to know any better.
Nice Terrance with fresh sea breeze, nice garden and vegation to be in the heart of Akwa , douala. Nice Restaurant , pool table, Old but ok basketball court.
Affordable pricing for Expensive Douala starting at $44 to $120 for double room apartements. Very Friendly assistant manager , he is a Pastor. definately will visit again

If you like really loud music with a DJ screaming at midnight this is the place for you. If you want to sleep. Don’t stay here.

Other issues. Transparent curtain that lets the giant fluorescent light illuminate your room at night. Several cockroaches. A shower door missing.

The restaurant need to be improved. The minced curry chicken was a baked half chicken of some sort. Breakfast is supposed to be at 730am. But all there was in the kitchen was someone cleaning. Overall slow poor service for an empty restaurant.

So in recap. If u want to get drunk and passout come here. If u want to sleep. Stay away.

Weirdly, recommended by Lonely Planet. We got a nice apartment here for a night but any positives were vastly outweighed by the unbelievably rude staff (the rudest in a year travelling around Africa) and old expat men running about, perving over young prostitutes. The restaurant is ok, if you can get served. Please avoid unless you are an overweight old man looking to pick up an STD.

The owner is extremely rude; she is the most obnoxious person I have ever met. She is very prejudiced. I complained about my room not having hot water and they offered me a bucket of hot water. My daughter requested a plain omelet at breakfast and it was given to another child in our party. Then waitress took the half eaten omelet from the other child and gave it to my daughter to eat. The rooms don't have phones, peep holes or double locks. The air conditioner works at times. The walls are so thin that you can hear everything going on next door and the wedding going on across the street until 6am. The beds and pillows are hard.

Booked into this hotel for 4 persons and advised them of late arrival! In spite of a booking confirmed by email, several reconfirmations (even on the day of arrival) by our travel agent in Cameroon, we arrived at the hotel at 02.30 hrs and found our rooms sold to others. The hotel personnel did not do anything at all but shrug and left us to an uncertain fate. Homeless in Douala after a long flight at 02.30 hrs is not a nice experience. From our touroperator in Cameroon we heard that this happens all the time with Foyer de Marin ! So please avoid this hotel at all times !

We have had the opportunity to stay at the Foyer du Marin, in Akwa Douala, the apartment 217 have been recently renovated and is the nicest place I have seen in Douala, everything is new, the apartment is very spacious, two great bedrooms and a very well fitted kitchen. The choice at the restaurant is limited but the food is very good. The single rooms is also good and the Foyer is very well priced.

In contrary to some other reviews we (Family of 4) enjoyed staying at Foyer du Marin (twice in 3 weeks).
We booked the only studio -room 24 - which is a completely redecorated two floor studio, incl. living room, diningroom, kitchen, two bath rooms, two big bedrooms and a wassingmachine! The room is well conditioned (3 air conditions), firm but good beds (1 double and 2 singles) and very clean.
The staff (especially Goergina at reception) is very freindly (speak perfect english and french) and they gave us excellent advise and a good agent in the North of Cameroon.
The restaurant is pleasant (outside in the green garden + good swimmingpool) and the food is good (not very cheap).
We would definitey recommend (especially families) to check out room 24, as a welcome change to the otherwise low comfort hotels in most of Cameroon.

Beware of this place, although it comes recommended from the Lonely Planet we would certainly not recommend this Foyer.

The staff are extremely rude which generally doesn’t bother us but in this instance it just goes too far.
Examples: I asked the staff at the reception if I could use the internet, she said sure no problems. After 30 mins I came out and she said: “Ok that’s 800CFA (US$2)”. As I had no idea that you had to pay for the internet and even less so that the cost was at least 4 times anywhere else, I refused to pay until the manager would come down. She refused to call him and proceeded to insult me. I left outraged telling her that if she wanted the money she would have to bring the manager to our room.

The staff don't want to speak French yet have the arrogance of 10 Parisians put together and the place seems filled with expats and their prostitutes.

Finally it’s tucked away in a small lane out of the main road which means that the “ghetto boys” (as the Foyer likes to call it) wait for you outside to mug you.

Just go to the centre missionaire in Douala instead much cheaper and more helpful
