I came to the Centroamericano during a fairly weird junction in my life. I was courting a girl from Panama (who I eventually married), and since it just wasn't proper for me to stay at her home, I stayed in this hotel for a full month. Cost me a little under $500. At the time, I had absolutely no grasp of Spanish, so the staff went to great pains to take care of me. I thought I had made a new friend there, but he apparently was one of the local undesirables, so the lady at the desk phoned my (then) girlfriend to tell her who I was hanging out with, so she came and gave me hell. :)

There is a little resturaunt (La Libertidor?) attached to the hotel, with pretty good food. Great burger, and they even had bottled Guinness, one of my personal favorites.

I had a single room with a small balcony. Not very many special features like pools or anything like that, but they did offer a laundry service, which was nice. Great view of the mountains beyond Panama City. Easy walking distance from Via Espana. (Point of interest, hotel is adjacent to Cuban Embassy)

If I have reason to stay in that area of Panama City again, I would definitely consider staying there again.

Two negative points: The hotel is very close to government buildings, so midday parking can be difficult, if not expensive. I had rented a car, which I parked in front of the hotel overnight, and came out the next day to discover all the lights stolen from the car. Wish for secured parking!

Previous reviews seem to be all over the place! From terrible to terrific.

What we found was somewhere in the middle. We stayed at the Hotel Centroamericano on three separate occasions in February 2011. Different rooms, but same reactions to the accommodation.

The good: Terrific location, near downtown Panama City. We found it to be a very safe location. Lots of taxis to take you anywhere in Panama City for $ 2 - 3. Three high-speed internet shops within 2 blocks ($1 per hour). Restaurant on site is ok (see below) Good restaurant on Balboa Blvd two blocks away. Several 7-11 type shops within two blocks. Quiet, if you request a room on the Pacific side of the hotel. Nearby hospitals do not seem to bring sirens. Floor staff very pleasant.

The not-so-good: Rooms are very basic. In all our three rooms, the air conditioner controls were inoperative. They were stuck on "Cool" so we were quite comfortable, but we had no say in the matter! Lots of mold in the showers. No carpets in the rooms. No bathmats. Small towels. Restaurant closed on Sundays, with VERY SLOW service other days. For some reason, the elevator does not go to the main floor, so you have to carry luggage a half-story up to get it. That, plus several steps up to the main entrance makes this facility a non-user friendly place for handicapped visitors. The desk staff at times is less than accommodating, professing no understanding of English and often acting quite grumpy!!!

If we were to return to Panama City, we would quite happily return to Hotel Centroamericano, knowing the situation. You get what you pay for, and the costs are quite reasonable.

This hotel was inexpensive, clean, convenient, and located in a locals area. The restaurant and bar listed on it's website is closed down and not operating. The rooms are clean, the AC works, but overall the property needs a little up-keep and cleaning. The area is locals with the standard issues related to Central American cities. I would not walk around outside at night in the area unless you're in a group of two or more. Several mini marts within a 5 minute walk but no real restaurants within a short walk unless you're into eating at the street stands.

If I could sum up this place in two words, it would be roach motel. When walking around the neighborhood, you can tell that this place is in the slums. Don't believe the pictures online, this place looks terrible. Those pictures had to have been taken 15+ years ago. There are prostitutes walking around and I'm sure they frequent the hotel across the street that costs ten bucks a night. Police officers are stationed all over the place and they all have huge guns. When you're in the nicer areas of Panama City, you never see officers on the corner of every street with guns like that.

The room was one of the dirtiest rooms I've ever had the misfortune of staying in. An American Motel 6 is the Ritz compared to this place. The floors are dirty, the towels are filthy, they don't have proper blankets, and there isn't any hot water. The rooms are extremely dark and the street outside is so loud that you can't go to sleep. The doors are so flimsy that anyone could come in and steal whatever you have in the room. The "maid" came in multiple times after being told that we didn't need any service. She would stick her head in to see if anyone was in the room and then she would call and then hang up after we answered. Obviously, I believe she was trying to go through our stuff. We stayed one night of our five night reservation and stayed in large chain hotels afterward.

If you want a nice and safe place to stay, pay the price and stay at a chain hotel.

Clean room, with good working a/c, big window, coffee maker, fridge, and ice for your drinks.
Friendly customer service. Good wi-fi. I was also happy with the laundromat, and possibility to wash my clothes after the trip.
Good location. Good value.

I totally recommend this mid budget hotel for pets and people. the concierge was very friendly, and was not phased when i had not booked my dog (a Hungarian Viszla, so quite large) in advance. Though I do recommend giving them a heads up. There is a park very close by 200yds, where you can walk your dog. Not recommended at night time though.
I also recommend the Garlic Clams in the restaurant next door, for $5.50 they are a bargain. Friendly staff and good service, the red wine was not bad either. All in all a good place to hang after a stressful plane journey from Grand Cayman to Panama, via Miami with your pets.

Thank you for this amazing review, like i said many times, we are dog lovers, so we are pleased to receive our 4 leg friends always, anyway we do recommend to give notice first, basically for the guest comfort, because the sizes of the rooms change, and if you bring a dog, we try to give you a larger room. It is very important to us that our customers recognize our work and be satisfied, so we hope you enjoyed your stay in Panama, and come back soon we will be happy to receive you and your dog again. First, the good: the air conditioning works well; the hotel is close to the ocean and some restaurants and attractions; the restaurant that is connected to the hotel is awesome -- good food, good prices, very friendly people working; the price for the room is good if you are on a budget.

Now the not-so-good: there is no hot water by design (be ready for cold showers); some of the front desk workers are friendly, some are not (the front desk man who works over night/early morning was very rude); the shower needs to be thoroughly cleaned of mildew, soap, and mold; the front-desk can do very little for you (I asked for change for my money, no. I asked for soap or quarters to do laundry, no.); there are not simple things like an iron available; walls in room are dirty and scuffed; bathroom floor needed to be sweeped and mopped; the neighborhood is iffy (was propositioned twice by prostitutes on the close-by streets).

This seemed like a good place for me to stay as I want to stay at some place that is local and offers some local flavor. I was very wrong. I felt like the front desk was worthless at everything except taking my money, and that they didn't want to be bothered with questions or helping me.

This was a disappointing experience except for the excellent attached restaurant. That was a pleasant surprise.

Hello, thank you very much for writing, we appreciate the positive comments you mention, and we are sorry that you found some inconveniences that made your stay a bad experience, we are a small family hotel and we really strive to provide the Best Service at the Best Price Possible. We're very glad that you liked the Café San Andrés so much, and enjoyed the delicious food. We do count with hot water, but being a single tank which should fill the entire hotel takes a while to heat the water, but I can assure you we have heaters running all the time. I am sorry you had a bad experience with the night clerk, thank you very much for letting us know, we always try that our staff provide the best service possible and help all our guests, but we can not always control it, in any case we will take action in the matter, but for the rest of the front desk that you mention that never helped you and gave you pure negatives, sometimes some receptionists who do not master the English language prefer to answer with yes or no, to make themselves understood better and not give rise to misunderstandings, this it may sound a little rough, but we do not want to offend you or anything, because we always try to have change and soaps for laundry, but sometimes we run out before we know it, but our intention is to always try to help you with everything is in our hands. The showers, bathrooms and the whole room is cleaned, swept and mopped with professional products every day, if you find any stains or soap remains it was a mistake and we are very sorry, but I can assure you, we always care to maintain cleanliness as priority number one. Thank you for your criticism, it helps us to improve these details to provide you a better service. I hope you consider this response. Greetings! Andrea Pérez.

The neighborhood has a lot of hotels around it, but the surrounding area has a lot of shady characters (even for C. America), I wouldn't recommend walking around at night. The hotel restaurant had good breakfast, but I definitely wouldn't order any other meal there. The first dishes my friend and I tried to order, they came back and said they were out of it. So I ordered the Chicken Parmesan, which came with a slice of American cheese on top.
I tried to order an airport pick up for a friend flying in that evening, but she didn't see the hand written sign and found her own way to the hotel. The hotel gave the cab driver my hotel room #, so he came to my room at 11:30 pm to collect the money for the cab ride, which my friend didn't take. I told him I would talk to the hotel in the morning about it and that I was going to sleep. He was really angry and didn't want to leave, but I told him 3 times and then shut the door. (hotel security anyone???) Then next day, when I talked to the hotel staff, they said I needed to pay the money and raised the price $10 since the driver had to pay for parking!!! After talking with the manager, going over and over it, my friends and I left and refused to pay it. The hotel charged my credit card that was on file with hotels.com, which we didn't even use to pay for the room!
The room was clean. That's the best thing I can say about the experience!

Hello I hope you have a good day, we regret all the inconveniences you mention and sorry that you have found such problems with your stay. Despite of the derogatory way that you talk about the área (even for C. America), we are close to the Cinta Costera, Casco Viejo and other tourist attractions of the city, and I can assure you that at night is pretty quiet and safe as any other place, there are many embassies and government buildings, so there are a lot of offices in the area and it can seem a bit lonely at night, but there's nothing to worry about. Sorry you had such a bad experience with us, but I need to clarify some points you mentioned: the hotel hired a taxi service (our private service wasn’t available) as you requested to pick up your friend at the airport. The taxi driver waited several hours (the airport parking ticket has the hours marked, so we could confirm this information) and your friend as you mentioned, went for a different way because she didn’t see the taxi man who have the paper with her name, the man appear at the hotel saying he need to be paid for the transport service that you hired, and although she didn't take it, he provided, and you instead of get down to the lobby and talk to the taxi driver to resolve the situation, decided to communicate that you won’t go down, that you will resolved the next day, but the hotel had to take care of paying the expense of the taxi you hired. The next day you spoke with a manager of the hotel and had agreed with her that you will pay the cost of the taxi YOU hired and that the hotel had to take over. In the end, when you decided to leave the hotel without paying as agreed, the hotel that have your credit card as GUARANTEE had to used to pay for the taxi that you hired but decided NOT TO PAY! We are glad that at least, the room was clean. Andrea Pérez

I booked Centroamericano Hotel as an alternative to a large, impersonal chain hotel. I didn't need alot of amenities and thought it would provide more of the local flavor but I found that it left a bad taste. It is located a distance from the center of the city and closer to el Chorrillo, the worst part of the city (slums & gangs). Across the street from the hotel is a transient hotel with guys hanging outside and loud music late into the night. As a single woman traveler, I did not feel safe, especially coming home at night. There are no shops or restaurants close by. There is a hospital and traffic noise from Corredor Sur a block away and the noise could be heard in my room quite clearly since the windows of the room were old and didn't close fully and the air conditioner was also very loud.

The lobby is very small and the front desk ladies did not speak english. The hallways seem updated but the room and bathroom seemed like a Motel 6 from the 1950's. The light bulbs were so dim that you couldn't even read in the room. There were blood spots (looked pretty fresh) on one of my pillowcases. I brought a "bedsack" with me and slept curled up in it so I wouldn't have to touch the sheets or pillows.

The morning after my late nightime arrival,I made my way down the street and found an internet cafe and was able to buy a telephone card to try to contact 1-800 Hotels with whom I had booked the hotel. When I contacted them to ask for help in upgrading my hotel (I was willing to pay more), they told me they couldn't help me because I had already checked in.

I decided to head out, walking thru the city (a couple of miles) looking for a more familiar hotel. I found the Radisson and they welcomed me for 4 of the remaining 5 nights I had left in the city. On the last day of my trip I had to return to Centroamericano and had one last sleepless night.

If you are looking for a hotel with no proximity to restaurants, shops or the general population, I suppose this hotel would suite you. Just don't wander around at night and don't walk toward el Chorrillo!

I paid $30 for 1 night at this hotel and I definately got what I paid for... a dump!! However, we were at the hotel only 6 hours, arrived late at night into Panama City and were out the following morning at 5:30am for a domestic flight out of albrook national airport. Considering the few hours we were there, we dealt with it however the beds were as hard as bricks, there were roaches in the bathroom and the AC did not work, so if I had to spend even an hour more, I would go elsewhere and I would suggest anyone else considering the hotel, do the same.
