Suzie, the host, took great care of all her guests. It is a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. The food for 15 Fiji Dollars was plenty and veery nice. Breakfast (fruits, bread, boiled egg, jam, breakfast crackers, tea, coffee) was included and also plenty. The location was nice because it was quiet cause not in the city center. However it is walking distance to the city center. I shared a 3 bed dorm with one other person, the bed was not the most comfortable one. Suzie is a great host and has valuable tips for making your stay in Suva and Fiji in general a great experience. I would definitely go back there when I come back to Suva. If you don’t expect a western kind of hotel/B&B this is the place you should stay at!

Colonial Lodge is situated right in the City Centre of Suva but is on a quiet cul-de-sac with adequate on-street parking when we arrived on a Saturday. We were greeted by the owner, Suzie, her 3 dogs and assorted family members and after a short wait while her aunt cleaned the room we were able to unpack our bags. We had a large double room underneath the main open plan area of the house. It was quite dark but this, and the two fans helped keep it relatively cool. It had a private bathroom and good shower with warm water. Above us was the kitchen and open plan living room of Suzie’s house which has nice shuttered windows overlooking the distant harbour, and old family photos on the wall. It’s certainly not a sterile hotel and has the feel of a homestay. We paid around 80 Fiji dollars for the room (£30) which I felt was a fair price for a capital city, though was expensive compared to prices in Nadi. It’s worth pointing out though that the lodge is in a very old wooden house in a tropical garden setting. Therefore expect a bit of mildew, things not working as they did when new, some insects etc- we didn’t book with expectations of a slick modern hotel so were happy with the room overall. Suzie is a bit of a hospitality entrepreneur and told us about her future plans over a homemade breakfast. She has a lot of knowledge of the island which is another bonus for independent travellers. In summary- it’s an interesting backpacker lodge in an old colonial building in the centre of Suva at a fair enough price.

I had a wonderful time in Fiji. Suzie and the family were very welcoming at the lodge and were able to give lots of helpful local advice about activites to do and how have an enjoyable time in the area. Suzie is a very good cook and made us some really nice and wholesome meals at a reasonable price (it was quite hard to find healthy food outlets in Suva, so staying at the lodge was a real advantage in this respect). The highlight of this lodge for me was the communal dynamic, where it was really easy to meet people. I met some many lovely, interesting and friendly people from such varied backgrounds. We had many an evening playing music, charades, cards, reading, chilling out. Lots of different room set ups were available at different prices. A great base for a medical elective at CWM hospital. Not huge amounts to see in Suva tourist-wise, but a real highlight was going to Suzie's private island one weekend...absolute paradise (and we found Nemo there whilst snorkelling!!!!) Thanks Suzie for hosting a great 6 weeks.

I had to stay one night in Suva for work and was so glad I picked this place! It was in a perfect location, had a lot of energy, great facilities, and wonderful operators. They asked me to join them on a night out for a fundraising event and I had a ball. They looked after me so well and were warm and welcoming! Breakfast was great and we had some great conversations. I shall be sure to use it again when travelling through Suva.

This place is a few hundred meters from the bus station. Our room and communal bathroom was a bit run down and access to wi-fi was limited to 30 min. The owner's father (?) was helpful and friendly. All in all an average place. There is a 2 night minimum stay

I was in Suva for 6 weeks on a medical student elective placement. Initially I wasn't in great accommodation on the other side of Suva, but luckily a friend put me on to this place. I moved here and it was the best decision I made. The moment I arrived to check the place out, I found it clean and very welcoming, with me being shown all the rooms available and the staff being extremely pleasant and accommodating. I moved in as soon as I could and found that the traveler environment suited me a lot, with there always being someone to talk to as well as lots of places i could hide away to do a bit of work. The owner was constantly looking for ways to improve the place and peoples stays there, and she was lovely to chat to and always willing to provide advice about shops and travel locations. Furthermore it was good value, and walking distance from the shops and the hospital. The room i booked was one of the single rooms they had available downstairs, and it was clean, had a desk, power, shelves and all the stuff you need as a traveler. The other rooms available included more single rooms, a cottage, a tree-house and dorms. I recommend contacting the owner if you are interested as she will give you a tour of the available rooms and try find something that suits you. The one thing to keep in mind is that Suva can be a loud city, and so if you are staying here, or anywhere else in the city, it might be wise to invest in a cheap pair of earplugs at night. In the lodge, there was WiFi for a bit of time each night, but I found it much easier to by a 50gb vodafone data sim for ~$30AUD (50FJD) as this suited my needs better. They also will do your laundry for a small fee which was quite helpful. Overall, booking here made my stay in Fiji immensely better as a solo traveler and I made some amazing friends. I could not recommend it enough to any other medical students, solo travelers, or anyone who just needs to stay a few nights in Suva!

We stayed here for a couple of nights, catching the bus from Nadi and Susie stayed up late to welcome us. We stayed in the cottage out the back which is lovely, nice kitchen if you want to cook and fridge for food/beer. Susie and family are very welcoming and helpful with and info you need and the complimentary breakfast is good. I think there's wifi in the evening but we didn't use it so cannot comment. We are backpacking on a budget and this was the cheapest place we saw but it was perfect. There's not much in Suva to be honest so we left again on the ferry to Savu savu.

Stayed at colonial lodge in January 2017 with 2 friends. We decided to go out for drinks and I advised Susie the owner that we would be out late. She ensured me the door would be left unlocked. We arrived back the door was locked and we couldn't get in as well as the dog was very aggressive and wouldn't let us near the house. We called the number using our European phones and no one answered. We shouted and called and no one answered. We waited outside locked out for almost 2 hours. Also we were promised breakfast for the 2 nights we booked and only received one breakfast. We paid for laundry and we received it back wet and smelling terrible and the money was demanded. The family was pleasant but this made our stay very unpleasant we left very disappointed.

Response from suvabedandbreakfast, Owner at Colonial Lodge Bed & Breakfast
Responded 22 Jan 2017
I am sorry that the guests left disappointed. It was my fault as I accidentally locked the front door forgetting that these three were still out. When I let them in at around 3am, there were only two of them. One guy was still out but the other two reassured me that he would be fine and would probably come home at daylight. They wanted to leave early that morning to head back west for their return flights but because of the night out they never emerged from their room until check out time at 11am. Breakfast runs from 7.30 to 9.15am during the weekdays so the table was obviously cleared and cleaned around 10am, which explains why they never got breakfast the second morning. As for the smelly laundry, there was only one hoody pullover that was slightly damp when returned, and this was explained to the guy who arrived at daylight, who owned the clothes and who was probably suffering from a hangover. A charge of $7.50USD was billed to the guest for a bagful of laundry. Despite what has transpired it was interesting talking with them on the first night, as they were from different countries. One of them is a flight attendant and had been in many countries and we exchanged notes on where to visit, cheapest airfares, organic hotels etc. I do hope the rest of their stay in Fiji was without anymore hitches they experienced in the Yasawas and in Suva.

On our arrival we were greeted by the resident cats and dogs, and once they had sniffed us over they were very friendly! Especially Andi the kitten! There is no footwear allowed in the lodge and we are tasked to remove our shoes. The rooms are downstairs from the main common area and are slightly cooler as a result, the lodge is a bit like a home stay with family and guests regularly popping in and out. The breakfast varies from day to day but they wouldn't let you head out into Suva with an empty stomach! Suzy the owner was lovely and gave us great advice on sending some stuff back to the uk for next to nothing! Fiji is very cheap to mail boxes from. She is very well traveled and has some very useful tips and stories to exchange. Downsides were thin walls and Ceilings, I imagine it could be noisy if it was full, but there is a quiet time curfew, Also the wifi is only on for 30 minutes a day but not the end of the world for us.

Host, Suzie, is very friendly as we chatted every night, she knows how travelers like to explore deeply as she traveled thoroughly in other countries such as Taiwan. She prepares really lovely breakfast in the morning. She cares about your safety as she saw I walked back to hostel at late night, she reminded me to be aware on the street. I remember my last day there was her son's birthday; she invited me to join the party and there would be having lovo(cook in undergound oven). However, I didn't join as I need to go to Lautoka at the same day.
