Adequate accommodation for temporary stay. Has mosquito problem in the general lounge area...staff are generally helpful. Rooms are adequate though the shower and washroom area is terrible. This hotel can do much better if taken care of and tidied up.

The positives: $90 per night, bed was clean

The negatives: 1)Told every room had internet accessibility- discovered that was not true. Sold me one dollar blocks of time ( I bought $5) only to find out there was nowhere on the property where there was a Wi-Fi connection. Told I could use desktop by front desk. 2) Room was terrible (see photos) No doorknob, broken bolt lock, shower that rained down on toilet, tiny broken up bathroom, cracked broken doors, old cabinet and takes covered in grey paint, broken remains of headboard hanging off wall 3) Pool table right outside of rooms with local guys drinking and playing pool until the late hours. Could barely hear television over the noise, and could sleep. 4)Pounding on doors, yelling, fighting/arguing, at pool table area at about 3:30 am-4:00 am several mornings in a row

I really need to start checking reviews before I book a strange place on line!

The staff was really friendly, BUT.....

I booked my room in September via a link on the Air Pacific web site for an over night layover enroute to Auckland. My credit card was immediately charged. When I arrived in Nadi it took three phone calls over the course of an hour to get the shuttle to come pick us up.

The hotel had no record of our reservation. I showed them the confirmation email I rec'd from Air Pacific and three staff members puzzled over it, speaking Fijian, for several minutes. In the end I was told that I would have to pay for the room again because they had no record of the reservation. I was told that Air Pacific didn't notify them of my reservation. I asked for a letter explaining why I had to pay again so I could try and get reimbursement from Air Pacific. I was promised I'd have the letter as an email by noon today. It's now 10 pm and I don't have it. I doubt I ever will.

The hotel building is concrete block construction. The double bed mattress was pretty worn out, but the sheets were clean if you ignored the cigarette burn holes. The roaches were varied, but all were slow. One of the staff came and sprayed roach killer all round for us. That, and a towel stuffed under the hall door, seemed to keep any others at bay.

Bottom line.......avoid this hotel! And don't book a hotel through the Air Pacific web site, go directly to the hotel web site if they have one. If they don't, you probably need to look for one that does. And, avoid any hotel that has "Grand" or similar superlative adjectives in its name.

I have to say this hotel was the biggest disappointment. As we pulled up in the taxi all I could say to my husband was 'What have I done?'.
I have read the other reviews and now I realise we were grossly over charged as well. $130FJ. Are you kidding? The Novotel Lami is only $100FJ and it is delightful and well serviced (no comparison whatsoever).
The whole hotel is so run down. The staff whilst pleasant were noticeably unhappy. There were wires hanging all over the place, including across our doorway. The beds were okay and the room reasonably clean but that is the limit of my credits to them. The bathroom window had no latch/lock on it. There was next to no water coming out of the shower and the drain in the shower was semi blocked.
Thankfully we had only booked one night and in the morning we were out of there as soon as we woke. I was that uncomfortable I would not even eat there.
From the other reviews I see that this resort has new owners. Good luck because you are going to need it.
I noticed a diversity amongst the reviews. Readers make of this what you will, I know I have my own personal opinion on this :-(

we visted nadi last weekend 9/01/15.. we were just looking for a room to stay overnight. at first i was given a standard room..i had made the payment through my card. the porter helped us take our stuff in the room. as soon as i entered the room i had decided i wouldnt wanna stay in this "hotel". the room was filty, smelly, the bathroom was just too bad.. i called the reception and told them that i cannot stay in this kinda room and we would like to check out. the front desk told us that we cannot check out because i had signed a form that the $$ is not refundable. so i asked him to give us some other room. we went to front desk and after much arguement we were told to pay extra and they gave us a room on the top floor, i was not happy with this room either because it was right on top and we had a lot of things to take with us and also we had to carry my 2 year old baby... so i asked the front desk to give us a room on a lower level, then they gave us a room on 1st floor.. we took all our stuff into the room.. the bed was ok.. room was quite big and neat. the porter took out stuff, ac was working fine.. the tv remote wasnt working and we couldnt change any channels.. well we had our shower and my little girl showed me few cockroaches in the bathroom so i thought it would only be in the bathroom.. we got ready and went to a wedding. upon our return, there were so many cockroaches in the bathroom and on the sink where we kept all our food.. it was just so filthy and we had to throw away all the food we had kept. my husband dropped me and my daughter and went back to the wedding. when he got bach around 1.30am and came to check me and my girl, there were few cockroaches on our bed.. imagine i had a little girl what if the cockroaches would ahev gone in our ears... we just wasted our money here.. we didnt even receive any receipts from the reception for the money had paid. upon checkout the girl at the reception was so untidy, wearing a dirty t-shirt upside down.. is this kind of service you provide to your guests???

As I travel alone I never made any hotel booking before arriving. I came across this hotel by a recommendation from the Nadi airport taxi driver who drove me here. I was meet by very friendly staff who gave me a Deluxe room for only F$70.00 per night. The room was clean and included a double bed, single bed, shower and toilet, air conditioning, fridge and tea and coffee. It is not five star but I do not use five star anyway, but was very comfortable. I spent most of my stay here as it is very close to the shops and banks and only 3 minutes from the airport. I did a lot of day trips and spent my nights at the Melanesian where they have a bar and a restaurant. I meet a lot of people from other pacific islands who were also staying at the hotel so it was great to talk to them and share a drink. Over all it is great little place to stay. I come to Fiji often so I will defiantly come back to the Melanesian.

We arrived for 1 night on route to the islands. It was close, the rooms were ok (im used to hostels) and the food was well priced and good.On the downside it doesnt look like the picture and im left with split tendons on 3 toes after they hadnt cleaned the side of the pool up,there was broken beer bottles and rubbish.I stood on some broken bottle and sliced my foot open.the blood was everywhere.the guy who was working there did help me out and clean my foot up,however nobody offered to take me to a hospital even though it clearly needed stitches! 3 weeks on and i have had to cut my trip in australia short because my toes arnt working due to cut tendons. so i have to have emegency treatment done in the UK.I am fuming..it has cost me thousands in flights and ruined my island hopping trip.also the blood was still there in the morning! shocking.

I thank you for your comments and would like to respond. We are very sorry that this happened to you and unfortunate, as other guests were around the pool and did not get cut. Our staff did help you clean your foot up and also offered to take you to the Hospital but your friend and yourself refused and said that you were O.K. After the accident you and your friend enjoyed yourselves in the pool!!

The service at the reception is non-existent. You have to pay a $20 deposit for your bath towels (for your room!) and god help you if you are staying the a few days, because they won't change the towels! No hand towels in the room. Just one pair of mismatching cups, and non-working TV, which after complaining to the reception, was told someone would come around soon to have a look (no one did). Couldn't sleep all night due to the traffic and the noises coming from other rooms. Booked for 2 days but couldn't take it anymore, so we checked out the next day and went elsewhere. Was lucky to find another hotel nearby, which cost about the same but excelled in service and cleanliness.

Flight was canceled while we were waiting in Nadi Fiji and the airline put us up in the grand Melanesian. At first arrival the reception staff were not really helpful and were very slow to get us all rooms, they were also trying to pair strangers up in rooms, when we got our room finally we found that it had 2 single beds which is really what a honeymooning couple wants, towels weren't provided, the floors could have done to be swept, and trying to get help from the reception staff was nearly impossible. They didn't give us a choice in meals so any dietary requirements wouldn't have mattered anyway. Bathroom fittings were falling off and there was a lot of general noise and staff banging in doors early in the morning. On their brochures it made it look a lot better than it actually was, and they also didn't advertise the drunk guy passed out in the hallways. It took a lot to get them to actually get us back to the AirPort. Overall we were happy to leave. I think sleeping on the floor at the airport would have been better.

Response from Mahendra N, Manager at Grand Melanesian Hotel
Responded 23 Jan 2014
• First of all thank you very much for your opinion which is very much appreciated. However, please allow me to clarify the issues raised. • Delay in allocation of room/staff attitude Please be informed that staff at reception had to attend to a large number of guests all of a sudden, which may have caused a delay. However poor staff attitude cannot and will not be condoned and will definitely be addressed • Room with two single beds This issue battles us because every room at the hotel is furnished with one double and one single beds • Bathroom fittings /cleanliness There have been n NO complains of falling bathroom fittings before or your stay however this matter has been looked into. Rooms are cleaned regularly and any inconvenience in this regard is regretted • Meal The fact that meal preference were not taken into considered once again the need to cater a number of guests at short notice however any special request made would have certainly been considered upon request. • Transfer to Airport Guest was transported to the airport in order of their arrival at the reception thus the need for you to wait. • Noise in the morning Any noise encountered way purely unintentional and caused in the act of waking up guest who did not respond to the wakeup call. Please be assured that our aim is to provide improved and quality service to our guests every time and any inconvenience caused due to unforeseen circumstances is greatly regretted. We always welcome comments from guest to better improve on our service. Thank you Mahendra Naidu Manager Grand Melanesian Hotel

Thanks for a wonderful stay at the Grand Melanesian Hotel during my Fiji visit. I enjoyed my large clean room, met caring staff, ate delicious food and all at an affordable cost. I have not visited the Melanesian for a few years and I can see good changes. Congratulations to you, Nitin and your team. Next year, I look forward to enjoying your new restaurant. My visit is more memorable with the kind support of you and your friendly staff. I have lived in Fiji for the last 20 years doing work here before moving to USA last year and visited Fiji again to attend a meeting and spent 5 days there. Can surely say that the Grand Melanesian Hotel is not the same under this new management. Good Luck Nitin.
