Detailed Reviews
I was very pleasantly surprised by this hotel for $38 a night. I believe the normal rate is $80, and it's well worth that amount too. The hotel looks like new and is sparkling clean. The staff is friendly, and there are nice perks like an in-room fridge. The Japanese restaurant was not yet opened as of January 2006, but I believe it's opening sometime soon. The one possible problem with this hotel is its location. It's actually a nice neighborhood, but it's on a hidden side street that NO cab driver has ever heard of. Our first cab driver at the airport actually dropped us off with a different driver because he had no idea where to go. The second driver had to call the hotel and ask for directions. After that, we just asked cabs to drop us off at the well-known luxury hotel around the corner and walked back to the Hotel Nippon from there. Moral of the story: if you stay here, be sure to print out a map or some detailed directions to get to the hotel! But, it's definitely a great place to stay.

This hotel is a really good value. Great service all staff is friendly and helpful. Spacious clean room. Bed is awesome you will get a god sleep. Breakfast as included on my room rate. The restaurant has excellent food. It is in walking distance of the bohemian neighborhood where you will find restaurants and bars. Close to the newest biggest mall in Santiago

Hotel is due for a refurb, other than this its somewhat reasonable. Only hotel to date that eggs aren't provided for breakfast and an additional charge is required. I'm sure there is better value for money elsewhere in Santiago.

We stayed at this hotel because it was a great price and in a great location. However, a few words of caution.... Expect to have your personal belongings and luggage gone through by staff when you are not in your room. We arrived and immediatly went to dinner, when we returned all the luggage had been gone through. We had our television turned on, air conditioning turned off and luggage searched on a second occasion. These instances occurred during the evening, hours after maids had already straightened the room. Our room coincidently did not have a key for the safe (additional people staying with us were also informed that their rooms did not have keys for their safe either). Money did go missing and we had to carry passports and jewelry with us at all times. Even if the hotel managment addressed the safety issues, I would not stay here again. The beds were extremely small and uncomfortable, there were no lamps or overhead lights, and if you're taller than 5'9' you won't be able to stand in the shower. I'm not a picky person, but there has to be better choices in this budget range than this hotel!

The Nippon Hotel is clean, quiet, close to the restaurants and nightlife of Bellavista and a reasonable price for Santiago.
It seems to have undergone a renovation recently as everything feels modern. The WiFi is strong and fast, the cable tv more advanced than many hotels and everything still works.
The breakfast is decent, if not exciting, and the staff are friendly.
Only suggestion is get the staff to mark the rough position of the hotel on a map - the road wasn't on any of the three I was using and most taxi drivers were unaware of how to get there. It's a one minute walk from the junction with Vicuna Mackenna, just south of Baquedano metro station.

We just arrived from a week in Nippon hotel and I´d like to say that if you need or wish to be close of the main tourist spots in Santiago, and don´t care about small problems like oldfashionable furniture and basic accommodations so this is the right place to stay.
The Nippon is within 10 min walk to downtown, Cerro Santa Lucia, Bella Vista district and its many restaurants and cultural spots, Providencia and even closer to 2 subway stations. There are plenty of restaurants and bars in the neighborhood.
The doors now have card keys and a lot of cable channels in english, spanish, arabic and even japanese but no one in portuguese in spite of its many brazilian costummers.
The rooms are small but enough for two. Our had two queen size beds so we used one to let the luggage on and everything we dealt. It would be better if it had only one. Here, a problem: the bed linen were so old and the courtains a bit dirt and no blackout at all.
The the air conditionning and heating work ok, there are free internet access in the rooms and a nice karaoke bar under the building.
The staff is very friendly and helpful and really do everything they can to inform you how to go around and everything the guests need.

We had three nights at the Nippon on a short break to Santiago, and were left neither amazed nor horrified by any aspect of it.
The hotel itself is a lurid pink building located a 10 minute stroll from downtown Santiago, and has a very old fashioned fell to it. Rooms have only old style key locks, rather than the card style entrances used almost everywhere now, and are small, with a tiny attached bathroom. TV has no English language channels, though it does have a number of Spanish language cable channels. Furnishings are old and rickety, and certainly don't reflect the 4* rating it apparently has earned.
Breakfast is included with the rates, and is a straightforward cold buffet affair.

Just got back from a 5-day stay at the Nippon. Its was a great stay the staff is great very, very helpful. The location is the main strength of this hotel its right off of the Alameda (Avd. Lib. Bernardo O'Higgins) close to resteraunts, shops, attractions (just a block from Cerro Sta Lucia!) and the metro. The breakfast is ok, to get the most out of it ask for the Jappanese breakfast (bowl of rice, filet of salmon, bowl of miso, and salad). Rooms are basic but fuctional. The staff is very helpful everyone I delt with was very professional and helpful.

First hotel on round South America booked through Eclipse Travel Sydney Very comfortable, good location, safe in room, good bathroom, breakfast was good, good bed and pillows, little noisy if in rooms that face street but fine with windows closed. Nice park only 100m away. All in all a good location, subway close by to access all the highlights of the city particularly downtown the old city centre, you can walk to most things from this Hotel including downtown in 20 mins, close to restaurants and street bars outdoor dining at Bellavista area, 5 minute walk, then another 5 to the small funicular which takes you to zoo and the San Cristobal Hill Lookout that has Madonna statue cost about 4 dollars return. Also 5 min walk to the romantic Santa Lucia park and lookout both lookouts worth it. Great city always felt safe, loved the dogs which roam the streets, their friendly as well, everyone was helpful, generally with a smile.

Very good location within walking distance of Centro and many of the sights but quiet at night. The reception staff spoke good English and were helpful. Breakfast was included and was plain but good. Taxi driver had some difficulty finding it but there was only a minor delay while he asked police for directions.
