I heard about this placed for a friend of mine who stayed there last summer, he could stop talking about the location and the tips he got from the people working at this lodge house in Pucon.

So, we went and it was more than we expected they were very friendly, and willing to help us in any possible way to make our stay there easier and more enjoyable. The price per room was about average compare to other places similar to this one. Breakfast was enormous and the view we had from our room was magnificent. Also is very important for future travelers to know that part of the earning are going to a foundation to support a free of charge heliambulance, for anybody who needs a first aid attention due to an accident while staying in town. Good to know there is still people that care.

I stayed here for one night in November. It sits right on the water in a quieter and lush part of town. The view from my room was truly spectacular with the the volcano on one side and the lake and beach on the other. And the women who ran the hotel were just lovely and very very helpful (so kind and helpful in fact that it's hard for me to write anything other than a wholly positive review). This is the kind of hotel where you spend a lot of time looking around and thinking "If I owned this hotel, I would...", and I would...pull up the old, dusty, moldy, stale-smoky carpets because they make it hard to sleep, paint the dark wooden walls white, and hang new curtains to better frame the stunning views. Other than that, I would leave everything else the same because I think they are sitting on one of the best views in town. I would probably also charge less during the off season. I paid too much for what it was.

We've arrived to the hotel at January 2010, after not being able to find any other decent place to stay at Pucon. Unfortunately this hotel wasn't accessible through booking.com so we didn't know of it's existence. At the time the hotel just became a family business after being owned by a company for a few years.
While arriving to the hotel the owner Merihen met us at the door, and after a quick negotiation we've agreed on a price for our 4 day stay.
The next morning we were supposed to go to the Villarica climb - and we needed an early breakfast at 05:30 am. Even though the breakfast didn't start until 7:00, Marihen prepared it specially for us including her absolutely wonderful and delicious homemade cakes. From our window we got a prime view of the volcano and the lake - absolutely great.
We had a good WiFi signal. a comfortable bed and hot water during all our stay.
Merihen treated us like we were her family and met all of our requirements. We felt really sad leaving her when we moved to our next destination.
The only problem with the accommodation that their English is very poor and you had to speak Spanish with them.
Wish you a wonderful stay at the Gudenschwager!

We planned our trip from Virginia, USA to Pucon, Chile months ahead because February 3 to 8, is high season in South America, and this town is a summer escape for hundreds of people. Our reservation with Gudenschwager Hotel was made and confirmed by emal in November and reconfirmed in December by a service provider who was posting a special rate for the days of our visit. The hotel is posted as a 3-star hotel and it looked well. Together with this reservation we planned all our excursions day-by-day for the four days we would vacation there.

The day we showed up at the Gudenschwager Hotel the owner's wife said she had no reservation under my name. So, I showed her our confirmation messages and said she had to honor that arrangement since we has relied on the confirmation of a company they were using for reservations. She said they did not work with that company anymore, and could only offer rooms at their current rate, which was much higher.
We managed to make her honor the reservation, but had in addition to staying in three different rooms one day our belongins were moved during the day from a room we were going to use for two nights into a room with a shared bathroom that the next door's couple did not want to share (of course) and had to go to another floor into a room full of fleas (we realized later). When ready to pay we had a big surprise: the final bill came not honoring the reservation rate but what the owners were charging at the time. The owners said they had stopped working with the reservation company two weeks before our arrival, therefore our reservation was not valid.
A negotiation about a discount he had verbally offered for the last two nights was not considered, either, so we decided, if he did not want to honor his word, we would make our own calculations and paid what we thought he deserved. In the end, the owner got more anyways as he did not charge in US dollars but in Chilean Pesos at the commercial exchange rate of the day which made a huge overcharge in comparison to the actual credit card exchange rate used by VISA that day.

I talked to the manager of the reservation service online, while I was in Pucon, and he told me that they were still promoting reservations to Gudenschwater Hotel and that he had tried to help us with the record they had of sending Gudenschwager Hotel our reservation, but Gudenschwager did not show a reception of it and they would not honor it. He took note of my complaint but I do not expect much done with it.

Overall this hotel promoted with 3 stars is no more than a Guest House, with no TV, no telephone, no dressers or closets to hang your clothes, no room service, no silence rules for the guests, no elevator, expensive and with unreliable management.

If you plan a trip to Pucon, Chile, I certainly recommend you choose another hotel.

I was in Pucon in march 2012, so off season ; from the bus station, I walked with my luggage in the streets and visited a lot of hostals and hotels and of course the ones which were selected in "Lonely planet" and "le guide du routard" were supposed to be some of the best value. These were overcrowded, full of young people, a bit noisy, especially those in the center near the bus station. And the rooms for the price, looked more or less sad.
The tourism office was very helpful ; the girls working there are very friendly.
Finally arriving to the lake, I found the last house was an old hotel, almost the first one in Pucon, around 1930 I think ; the location is very quiet near the peninsula and right on the lake. It was almost empty ; the owners, the mother around 80 and the daughters around 55 or 60 were very friendly ; the rooms were large, a bit old but very clean and well kept, with 2 single beds which were large enough to put 2 people and very very confortable! I like this kind of hotel which has a soul.
There is no TV in the rooms
WIFI worked very well and fast.
From some rooms you can see the lake, the others are facing the hill behind. If all the rooms are occupied you may hear a little bit the neighbours.
The bathrooms are a bit old but not run down at all, very clean.
The breakfast was simple but sufficient. I suppose that when the dining room, which is right on the lake, is full, there is a buffet.
I can understand that some people prefer a more modern hotel with all up to date amenities.
For instance I have visited the grand hotel Pucon (also an old hotel) and wouldn't like to stay there ; crowded and not really pleasant.

The only thing is that hotel Gudenschwager is for sale ; nobody knows what will happen with the new owners and when it will be sold.
The price of the room was correct : 25 000 CHPesos for single and 40 000 for 2 .

Choosing a hotel is hard and depends on the sensibility of each one ; you can like eating in a Mac Donald ; this is not my way of life.

otherwise, when I walked outside hotel Gudenschwager, I saw too late that next door was a guesthouse, the "Frontera Pucon hostel" which has a 9,6 vote on booking.com and is N°1 in "special lodging" on tripadvisor ! it seems to be always full !

Pucon is a small town ; you can reach the center in 5 mn... if you walk slowly.

I didn’t know where to stay after I got off the bus, took a taxi cab and asked the driver to take me to a nice everything, (that incl. price) he did!!!

I stayed here at the Gudenschwager 7 days, was great, nice cozy rooms, warm really warm, quiet, if you are looking for a spa and a pool with a bar nope this is not the place.
Now, if you are looking for inexpensive bed, breakfast and nice people whiling to help you how to get around town. I’ll say stay here.

Pablo the guy that works there is the one that knows were to go and what to do. Besides I have to thanks him for going all the way up the volcano with his truck and getting us out of there on a snow storm…forever THANKS dude…

Hopefully this will help you on you next trip to Pucon. Fare well.

Small hotel run like a B&B.

Pros: Great location a couple of blocks from everything in Pucon. Quiet street next to the lake. Fantastic hosts, breakfast is 9-11 am, but we asked to have it as early as 6:30 and it was ready and no problem. If you want more than just basic South American breakfast, just ask. Great off street parking area. Wonderful bedding. Oldest hotel in Pucon.

Cons: Have to ask for hot water to be turned on at certain times of day. No TV in the room (not really needed in Pucon).

A quaint little hotel right at the edge of the lake. The service and amenities were good, but the rooms are a bit smaller, especially the bathroom. Ask for a room facing the volcano. It's about a five minute walk to the main area of town where you can find art shops and restaurants. Would recommend if you're staying just one night and want the views and a convenient location. Breakfast in the morning was delicious and served right as we walked downstairs. However, if you stay in off season, don't expect the restaurant or bar to be open. The rooms do get chilly, so pack warm!

This hotel is really wonderful, old fashioned with but with all the necessary facilities and very reasonably priced. The lady who was in charge when we stayed (Tere) was most helpful and super nice. The place has character, is very comfortable, views and location are difficult to match. Next to a lovely bay with a small port and facing the Villarrica volcano. Good breakfast and plenty of parking. Close to restaurants and to the center of Pucon. We enthusiastically recommend it.
