Wonderful place to stay in Pucón.
Not just that the hosts are just great, very welcoming, helpful and friendly, but also that the place itself is so nice:
really spacious rooms, great & perfectly equipped shared kitchen (including fridge to deposit your food), swimmingpool in a lovely backyard, very clean, close to everything.
They also help you out with tours if wished for.
Highly recommended!

For us was a perfect stay, it was in february 2010.
The rooms are very clean and big, the toillet also, all working perfect.
The staff is very friendly and organization is extremely good.
It's unbealivable to find a HOSTEL with such a WONDERFUL category, and such a LOW PRICES.
Internet (in the common area) and parking for free.
Also u can use the kitchen and leave ur food there without problems.
Our room had a perfect view to the volcano and a huge window(almost the whole wall).
The room of our friend was by the other side didn't have "our view" but was of the same conditions(big, clean etc).
The place where it is placed make it easy to go walking everywhere, to the centrum, to the lake, to the bus station, public transport very near... some roads are not very good to reach natural parks if u have not experience in those conditions, but u can go everywhere with public transport for a low price.... take the chance if u have it!!
I assure u will rest well at night and won't repent.
FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE!!!

I love this place. Is it really close to town. Located within walking distance from a supermarket.
It is owned by a lovely family. They were very nice. It was very clean and tidy. The cabins were we stayed were separated from the main house were the kitchen was located but what was good because we had privacy. But they also have some rooms in the main house.
This is a cheap alternative of high quality!!

Really. We were surprised by how crummy our experience at Donde German turned out to be and it was a real downer to end our trip on this note. We wished we had stayed elsewhere and feel a responsibility to warn you, because we wished that someone had warned us. Blah service is one thing, but when you have a series of BAD EXPERIENCES at a place, it can ruin your day and perhaps your overall experience in that town. So do yourself a favor, ignore your guidebook’s listing of this place, look past the shiny renovations, look past their initial smiles and trust me when I say, DO NOT STAY HERE.
When we finally made it to Donde German on our first night, the first guest we encountered in the office was visibly upset about something after having just finished a conversation with staff. We should have taken this visual cue as a warning not to stay there, but it was midnight, and we did stay there, so here’s your warning…
Once you’ve checked in and forfeited your opportunity to stay elsewhere, you’ll quickly learn:
- The STAFF IS HORRIBLE!
- They are incredibly DISORGANIZED and messed up both of our reservations, not actually reserving a room for us the first time around and then giving us two twin beds and a shared bathroom the second time, after we had made a point that we only wanted to reserve a matrimonial bed with private bathroom.
- The rooms are NOT SAFE and do not lock. And they will LIE to your face saying that they normally do, but we spoke to other guests whose doors did not lock either. The night clerk finally admitted that the locks on most doors have not worked since the new hostel opened.
- They will CHARGE YOU MORE if you’re a foreigner, which is just bad form.
- If you decide to voice your complaint about how you think the door to your bedroom should lock, the STAFF WILL ACCUSE YOU of being the problem and speak to you with a snarky tone and disrespectful attitude usually reserved for teenage girls…head rolling, facials and all, from the grown woman named Tatiana who’s in charge of overseeing the place.
- They DID NOT PICK US UP from the bus stop at midnight as they said they would a mere five hours earlier on the phone.
- The only insights they will provide to you about attractions in the surrounding area are made through trying to sell you on an expensive tour with their company. They will tell you that you can’t do things on your own. They LIE. Go to the fabulous Tourist Information Office in town and they will give you unbiased advice about how to affordably get around to the hot springs, national parks, volcano, etc.
So why did we stay here twice? We thought the first time was a fluke. We hoped booking our second room at the newer building would provide a nicer experience, but we could not have been more wrong. Save yourself, save your vacation, spend your money elsewhere.

I have stayed there twice and had two totally different experiences.
The first time I stayed with my boyfriend and mother in April. We were all impressed with the hostel and the bathrooms (rain showers!). The owner and namesake was in charge that weekend. He was relaxed and friendly to us and the other guests, in both English and Spanish. He encouraged a good atmosphere, gave good recommendations and kept the hostel a nice, warm temperature. All of the guests cooked together and drank wine in the lounge and had a great time.
Then, a few weeks ago we went back because we had such a good time there before. COMPLETELY different experience. The woman who was in charge (who I believe normally is in charge) is a total nightmare! She lectures, she condescends, she whines. Basically, we stayed with an overbearing relative. When we arrived, she made us wait while she interviewed cleaning ladies (and asked them inappropriately personal questions) and when she showed us in, she made us remove our shoes right away, even though she was out of slippers, so we were forced to walk around in our socks before even being shown our room.
The rest of our stay was more of the same... She also complained to us about Israelis and French people and said other ignorant things...
Another thing I saw that really upset me was how she treats the lady who cleans. The lady who cleans seems to have some sort of disability, but really works hard and does a good job. Our room was spotless and the bathrooms are pristine. This women just rides her, day and night, and you often hear her whining this poor woman's name or yelling at her. The other guests all started to complain about it and how it was making them uncomfortable.
The last straw for me was when we had checked out and stored our bags before our bus. After walking around, we went to leave and I needed to use the bathroom... and she would not allow me in the hostel to use the bathroom. She made me use the bathroom in her office, filled with cleaning supplies.
I wanted to write this all down, in hopes that the owners read this, because as long as that woman is there, I won't be returning, which is a real shame, because the hostal itself, location, and cleanliness really are superb.

We stayed at the old hostel in both the cabins and inside the main building. Both rooms were nice and the bathrooms clean. The kitchen area was large and was mostly well equipped. The living area was also really cosy with a fireplace and couches. There were bikes for rent and German was happy to call tour companies for. The negative: the fires were not filled with enough wood and left to burn out at times as guests were not permitted to restock the fire. This was not ideal in the middle of winter when this was the only source of heat. The kitchen closed at 11pm. At times this is not late enough when there are several groups cooking/eating. We were told that we can go to the nightclub if we wanted to stay up. We were a group of 8 who just wanted to chat. The owner was rude and very unwelcoming and several times would tell us off for various things. She come downstairs in a huff and turned on the fan for the oven saying she didnt like the smells of our cooking. On the last morning she tipped out half my kettle of water and told me I was using the wrong kettle for two people, that I should be using the small kettle - even though me and my friend drink a few cups of tea each. Overall a lovely hostel jaded by a rude owner who treats her guests like children.

Be carefull for all the money things...
They can try to caught you in a corner to get a couple more pesos.
For example, the rafting trip with them is more expensive if you book directly at the hostel than if you book it with an agency in town. For the same trip and guide.
They will give you the most wonderfull smile when you came in but after that you can feel that you disturb them.

We decided to undertake a trek of the nearby Villarricia volcano and booked it through the hostel. The price they charged was 45,000 pesos and while we could have got it for 30,000 / 35,000 in the town we decided to go through the hostel as we thought the higher price would mean better service. Boy were we wrong!
There was no information given on the hike, there was a brochure in the hostel with a few photos given but we were told nothing of the conditions or how difficult the climb would be. I also asked specific questions about whether I would be able for it or not physically as I had just recovered from a bout of the flu. I was told that it would be no problem, it was not a difficult climb. There was no briefing as to anyone´s fitness or health.
We were told the ascent would take about 6 hours. From about 45 minutes into the climb, it was necessary to put on our crampons (earlier than we expected). Walking and then climbing on ice is very different to walking on snow, it is much more difficult and dangerous. The ice was very hard and it was getting increasingly difficult to climb. We continued, then about 2000 metres in to the climb, the volcano is 2800 metres in height, the wind really picked up. No felt in the group felt safe. A couple of seconds later my partner slipped and begain sliding down the mountain, it was terryifing, a couple of seconds after that a dutch girl in the party slipped and also began sliding down the mountain. All the while the rest of the group had to cling onto the ice with our pickaxes as the wind continued to blow stronger.
Thankfully my partner stopped about 200 metres from where he had fallen, however the other girl had continued to slide down the mountain, perhaps another 500 metres. Neither of them were serious injured, a few bruises and a sore ankle, the guide however twisted his knee and broke a couple of fingers, this happened as he dived on top of the dutch girl as she was falling in an effort to protect her.
All in all, it was a very frightening experience. Maybe we were unlucky, but this was winter time and i think it is more dangerous than any other time of the year. Everyone thought it was too dangerous especially when no one had prior experience. When it came to paying, the owners threatened to call the police if we did not pay full price. They got really aggressive. We all thought that a discount would be fair as people could have been seriously injured. In addition, we spent only a half day on the mountain. The owners didnt care, were unsympathetic and just wanted our money.
Firstly, do not do the trek during the winter months. Secondly, do not do it with this hostel. We have since found out from Hostel Casa Roja, Santiago, that a lot of accidents happen on that volcano.

The hostel is in a nice and quiet location, close to all the many supermarkets in Pucon as well as Pucon-centro. There is a big garden with outdoor seating where you can sit and enjoy view of Villarica volcano. Our room was comfortable as well, although cold. We had to ask the owners to turn on the gas heating which they did after making sure we would turn it off properly. No problems! The bathroom was pokey, right next door to the cleaning supplies room I think, so we could hear the cleaners and woman who runs it talking.
Common facilities are very nice: great big spacious warm lounge with lots of light being let in through big windows. The kitchen is also very big and has great storage as each guest has a designated place to store their food (no chance to get your food mixed up with another backpacker).
The major problem with this hostel is the woman owner who is overbearing and extremely specific. When we arrived she said we could park our car in the driveway which we planned to do after returning later thta day from a hike. There was definitely space in the driveway for two cars to park, but she insisted on only car being allowed to park, so we had to park somewhere else, in the driveway which was covered in broken glass. Also when we checked in, she went through all the rules and we were given a 5 minute lesson on how to close the door properly. She then made us practice. This woman has no faith in people fyi. She treats guests like potential criminals. Later on in the evening we were cooking dinner and she marched in, turned on the extractor while my boyfriend was cooking, and gave us a lecture about it. Other guests had had similar experiences with her, everyone was a little afraid of her! The thing that really did it for me was when I went out to the supermarket my boyfriend sat it the lounge to skype with his family. After skyping he went to the bathroom upstairs. When I returned from the supermarket the woman came in to the kitchen and started to have a 5 minute rant about how I wasn't allowed to use the bathroom upstairs, that I was only allowed to use the bathroom in our bedroom which was outside. I said to her I hadn't used the bathroom and couldn't understand why she was saying this to me, she then went on to accusing me of using the bathroom (for which I still can't understand why guests aren't allowed to use the bathroom nearest to the common facilities)... This went on and on, she was extremely rude to me about it. It was only after talking with my boyfriend that he said he'd used the bathroom upstairs, which is where she must of gotten the idea that one of us had used it! I still don't understand why guests can't use the bathroom nearest to the common facilities. For guests who have outside bedrooms (which is most of them) the woman owner expects people to trek 5 minutes out in the dark to their own bedroom... It's all a bit bizarre and unaccommodating.
Another point of note that really drove us crazy was the rule that you aren't allowed to drink or eat anything in the lounge. This meant that the lounge was hardly ever in use, as you're not even allowed to have a glass of water on hand.
I would say that this hostel could potentially be one of the most relaxing places to hang out in Pucon if the woman owner would loosen up or be brough to heed. Her son who is also involved in the running of it was hardly ever around, but I suspect that if he had a greater hand in running the place it would have a very different vibe.

well, the hostel is really beautiful. rhe rooms are nice, the kitchen is big and the yard is great.
BUT! The staff is unfriendly, very cheap, and gives you the vibe as if you intrude their private home. During our all stay there was only one bathroom that was working. The other was shut and locked. Lack of toilet paper and liquid soap in the bathroom, a few times when German and Maria came and shut the lights in the kitchen, living room or hallway while we're still there! and from 21:30 untill 6 AM there is no hot water in the shower and no gas in the kitchen ¨for safety reasons¨.
Doesn´t give you the feeling that you're welcome.
All in all - look for another hostel.
