Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Kay's B&B is a favorite place to stay in Stanley because it's cozy, fairly centrally located, comfortable, and well-priced compared to other options in Stanley. It's run by Kay McCullum who is an older woman and a Falkland island native. She rents out two upstairs rooms, one with a queen bed and the other with two twins beds. She also lets people camp on her back lawn and, I think, has some tent gear in case you don't have your own.

The upstairs rooms are fairly big considering the size of the house and were comfortable. We stayed in the room with the two twin beds (more on that in a minute!) and found it to be spacious and the beds to be comfortable, though a bit soft for my taste. The rooms were also kept very clean. Kay was nice enough to let us keep extra luggage in the room while we were gone to Sea Lion Island, which helped us out tremendously. And she gets the schedule for any FIGAS flights you are flying on which is also helpful and will organize a taxi to the airport. She also helped us organize a 4x4 trip to volunteer beach which was good because we found a cheaper driver that way (4x4 hires in the Falklands are expensive!!!).

Breakfast was satisfying and most mornings Kay had hard boiled eggs for us from her own chickens which I thought was a nice touch. Kay also gives you the option of having dinner at the B&B for fairly cheap and it was actually very good! She made us a pot roast with veggies from her own garden and dessert was a bread pudding which was AMAZING!

The bathroom situation can get a bit dicey because you are sharing with all guests (and Kay too I think). And the shower is really loud so Kay doesn't let you shower too late at night.

The major issue we had with the accommodation was with our experience with Kay herself. Though we made it clear we were traveling as a couple before hand, she still gave us the room with the twin beds when we arrived, even when the queen bed was available. And we found her to be somewhat aloof when we met her. Which was surprising since we read about how warm and friendly she is in the Lonely Planet. When we arrived back from Sea Lion Island a few days later, that evening she was being especially cold to us while being friendly to everyone else (right in front our eyes!!). So much so that we both were considering just leaving that night. We found out later through another guest that Kay was concerned about how an older Dutch couple staying at the B&B would respond to a gay couple and, I suppose, thought it best to not encourage us to hang around the dining room by being unfriendly. After that couple left the next morning (who, incidentally, seemed completely fine with us!), Kay was definitely friendlier and finished off our stay being pleasant. But it did leave a sour taste in our mouths. Sure, she's older, from a different generation and I'm sure there aren't many gays in the Falklands, but I wish she would have handled things differently.

Overall, I think Kay's B&B is the best option and value in Stanley and I think 9 times out of 10, Kay will be a super host. We were just unfortunate to see her not-so-great side.

I had read the reviews on here before traveling, and especially the review by the gay couple. I am not gay, but she took an immediate dislike to me from the second she saw me and took an obvious look at my wedding ring as if wondering to herself why a man would travel without his wife. I have to say that I found her attitude throughout my two-day stay to be morose and bitter. Yes, the old days were better, but if one is opening one's home to guests, I believe that one should make a sincere effort to be welcoming. She is forgetful - she was about to give my room to other people until I reminded her I was staying for two nights. I would say that Kay exemplifies what I found to be Falklanders' attitudes to strangers: if you fit their expectations of who should be traveling and why (married couples seem to raise no eyebrows) then fine, but otherwise you might get a cool to cold reception for no apparent reason. She warmed up when I paid my bill and wished me a good trip. I felt like she had done me a favour to let me stay in her home, which I truly appreciated but she was not friendly to me during my stay.

Me and my son, we had a perfect stay in Stanley, mainly also thanks to Kay. We stayed two nights at her place and had even one evening dinner with her - she is just an amazing cook, it was soooo delicious.

Kay's B&B is centrally located in a very calm road, one to two minutes from the west store or the post office and a nice children playground is just next door (where we had to pass by with my 8 year old son on every single way home as you can imagine). The rooms are neither big nor small and price / quality ratio is excellent. We would always return again to Kay's place. Absolutely recommendable!

well what do you say about a stay with Kay. Double bed, warm downstairs and the ability to control the temperature upstairs. I cannot stand a hot bedroom, so it was bliss to be able to open windows and enjoy quality fresh air yet be all toasty when you needed to be. Oh yes, perfect eggs - boiled or fried! and... toast and marmite! open house and tea and cakes that you cannot refuse - oh my goodness the ginger biscuits!! Kay is fabulous, we had such fun together and chatted until far too late. Thank you Kay for your wonderful warm welcome, the care and thoughtfulness. the help in getting taxis, meeting friends and having a little window into Stanley life. I would have loved to have met your husband and father and seen the Falkland islands as it was then. Images to remember. much love from Anna

Kay could not have been more welcoming. From clean, comfortable rooms to a excellent breakfast, Kay's B&B was excellent value for money. But if you are over 6' tall watch out - the house was not designed for tall people with especially with low doorways & low ceilings in the Bedroom.

Sailing around Cape Horn and arriving in the Falklands tired and in need of a warm, dry and comfortable bed was high on the priority list as well a nice meal.
Got it all at this place. Absolutely terrific.

Kay

A wonderful home from home, Kay made me feel very welcome from the moment I arrived. It is a small cottage which Kay lives in and has two bedrooms upstairs for guests, a twin room and a double room; I understand that Kay also allows people to camp in the garden as well. At the sied of the house is Kay's picturesque and quaint gnome garden which is often photographed by tourists coming in from visiting sruise ships as well as land visitors. All Kay's offerings are home cooked from the delicious breakfasts to the cakes and scones offered on arrival. If you need a good night's sleep you can't beat Kay's in a quiet street but not far from the shops and other amenities. The only downside if there can be one is the shared bathroom facilities.

Staying at Kay's is for a certain type of traveler - one who values unique experiences. The quality of the rooms was passable and I really did not like the bathroom situation and a few other things but if you're staying there for that, you will only be disappointed. Kay is pure Falklands, she has an encyclopedic knowledge of basically all aspects of Falklands life. Think of her as your fixer when you're there, she will get you the best hookups to experiences that you might otherwise overlook or overpay for. So, if you're interested in meeting eccentric, well-travelled people and seeing the best of the Falklands for a decent amount of money, Kay's is a great place to stay!
