However... the rooms are tiny. The walls are tiled giving a bathroom feel and the light poor giving a dinjy feel sadly. It was very clean and the shower very good. But I paid $50 a night which is a record for my own hostel(complete website name yourself) use and sadly the very poorest value for money!
God, and I've not mentioned the lifts (see other reviews) or raved about the location.
Because of the good reviews we went to New Peking Guesthouse and felt immediately very welcome. The private room was cheaper than our previous dorm and was neat and clean. Two beds were a bit hard to sleep on, but comfortable enough.
Private bathroom which is cleaned daily with fresh towels every day. We hung our own towels to dry in the corridor and the owner couple delivered these to us after they had cleaned them, a great piece of service!
Free wifi and in the middle of Kowloon a.k.a. the place-to-be.
1. Price is Reasonable.
2. Room is Small but Very Clean.
3. Our Comfort Room is Quite Big (Room 104) compared to Others.
4. Staff and Owners are Friendly.
5. It is Very Near MTR, Bus Going to Airport and even McDonalds.
6. Elevator is quite a Challenge but mostly in the Evening.
7. Owner even allowed us to check-in earlier than 12noon and we even left our luggages with them after we checked-out since our freturn light is still at 7pm.
Overall, I highly recommend New Peking Guest House! If ever I will go back to Hong Kong I will definitely consider staying there again.
Owner Peter, his wife and worker will treat you very well and they are very helpful if you need other services. Need a visa to China? Leave your passport with Peter and he'll get it for you. Having done this many times on my own, I know Peter is not making much - if any- money on this service. He has also stored my bags for several days while I made a trip to mainland china and didn't want to carry all my luggage. You really can't ask for a nicer guy. If you book your room online, you will receive an email from Peter with directions to the hotel and a guideline as to how much you should pay for a taxi from the airport. If you have a lot of luggage, spring for a taxi. If not, opt for the train to Kowloon.
Now about the rooms. They are all very small. But they are clean and comfortable with TV and AC. You can save a few dollars by opting for a room with a shared bathroom.
Personally, I go to Hong Kong to see Hong Kong....I'd rather spend my money on activities rather than on a place to sleep, so New Peking is perfect for me. I don't mind the small rooms because I'm only there to sleep and shower.
Located on Nathan Street in the heart of Kowloon, getting to and from anywhere in HK from New Peking is really easy. Buses stop in front of the hotel, the subway station is also very close by. Easily walk to the Star Ferry to get to Central. There's lots of great shopping, restaurants and bars within a radius of two blocks.
As for the building that New Peking is in, Chung King Mansion, it appears to be a bit seedy, but I have never had a problem with security there, nor have I ever felt threatened or unsafe. I find the Chung King building to be an interesting hub of activity with vendors of all sorts, great little food stalls (good Indian food!) and an overall great place just to do some people watching.
The downside for the hostel are the lobby and the elevators. The building could be a bit shady to people as there were a lot of Indians at the lobby pestering people and offering accommodations to all guests. All you need to do is brush them off. There are only two elevators inside the building. It will really take time when using it as these are also the elevators used for delivery of supplies of each guesthouse per floor and other tenants of the building. Overall, I would still recommend this guesthouse for the promixity to various restaurants, stores and supermarkets as well as the cleanliness of each rooms. The rates are also affordable if you're on a tight budget and would just want a clean place to sleep in HK.
All contact with the staff was good and they spoke English. The only downside of the experience was Chungking mansions itself. It is a big building with multiple hostels and shops inside. As such many hawkers/peddlers stand outside trying to sell you watches etc. There is also only 1 elevator that goes to each floor so the wait can be a bit long at times.
