Spacious room,, however, no lobby to sit and have coffee. Water pressure and temperature setting is good.
From the airport, we took the A21 bus to TST. Get down on the 13th stop: “Cameron Road, Tsim Sha Tsui” as shown on the digital screen inside the bus. The stop is right across a mosque. Fronting the mosque, walk to the left and take a left again on the first corner. Walk a few steps and turn left again in the first corner (when you see a City Chain Watch Store). Hotel will be right beside City Chain.
Check in was quick. We arrived before standard check in time but our room was ready. The hotel is a no-frills hotel. Size was just ok. Two queen beds with just enough space to move around. There was a long working desk and a small dressing table. The room had a small closet, an in room safe, hairdryer, mini ref, complimentary coffee and tea packs with electronic kettle, 4 slippers, and bathroom kits (shaving kit, buds and balls, toothbrushes, comb, shower cap). The bathroom, unlike most small no-frills hotel, was not as tiny as an aircraft comfort room. Shampoo and body wash were provided for in dispensers. 4 bottles of water were replenished everyday. We were welcomed with a bowl of fruits. Booking directly with the hotel gave us free access to their lounge. The lounge had free juice, coffee, tea and hot chocolate and some light snacks / cookies. There was a hot/cold water dispenser there as well. Four laptop computers and a large flat screen TV are available for guests to use. The lounge is located on the same level with the family rooms (1st floor) so it was like an extension living room of our room. The boys would go and use the laptops or watch TV there when they were not interested in what we were watching. Hubby and I would usually wake up earlier than the kids and we would go there to watch TV or do some research on our daily itinerary so as not to bother the kids. During our entire stay, we were the only guests using the lounge. Either no one knew about it or did not care about the service but we found the lounge to be a big plus for our stay. Free wifi internet access was provided. According to my boys who rate hotels based on the speed of internet access, the connection was good and fast enough. Four pillows were provided per queen bed. We never heard a single sound during our entire stay at night. We all slept very well.
If there is any reason that would make us book here again in the future, it would be because of its location. Location is great because of its access to the buses and the MTR station. It is just a few steps away from the TST MTR station. Area is GREAT for shopping. There are a lot of food choices nearby. Purpose of our trip was to take the kids to the parks and do shopping in between. We arrived early on our first day so we took a 15-20 minute walk to Toys R Us in Ocean Terminal and did some toy shopping there. To get to Disneyland the next day, we took the MTR (take red line to Lai King, change to orange line to Sunny bay then from Sunny bay change again to get on the Disneyland line). We did Ocean Park on our 3rd day and we took the MTR to Admiralty to catch the bus to OP (head towards Lippo Center exit and find the 629 bus to Ocean Park). Our last day was supposed to be dedicated for shopping but since the malls do not open until 11 am, we decided to check out the Hong Kong Science Museum which opened at 10AM. We had breakfast at the Charlie Brown Cafe which was en route to the museum. From the hotel, take a left at the corner and walk straight down Cameron Road. Charlie Brown Cafe will be on your right towards the end Cameron Road. To get to the HK Science Museum from Charlie Brown Cafe, take a left to Chatham road and walk up the foot bridge to cross Chatham road. Follow the signs to the museum. The kids enjoyed the museum as much as they enjoyed the parks. The museum was entertaining and informative at the same time. The top level of the museum is a discovery and play area for young children. We went on a Saturday and there were only a handful of people. I guess everyone else is in Disneyland or Ocean Park.
To take the A21 bus back to the airport, cross Nathan road and take a left to look for the A21 bus stop.
Other tips:
Malls aside from Ocean Terminal that we enjoyed are Miramar Shopping Mall (from Cameron Road, head towards Nathan Road. Take a right along Nathan Road and walk straight) and Silvercord Shopping Center (across Harbour City - south end; towards Marco Polo Hong Kong).
Don’t miss Din Tai Fung in Silvercord Shopping Center for those tasty pork dumplings! The basement of Silvercord also has a food court with a lot of choices.
For electronics, check out Suntek along Hankow Road. We have been their customers for decades now (my sons are their third generation customers already) and they always give us the best prices (Look for Allan). Do make a price comparison first or make sure you have an idea of the price and the product you are looking for already. It’s a good idea to read the warning about buying electronics along Nathan Road in the HK travel forum in TA.
For stylish, practical, reasonably priced stylish leather bags, check out Rabeanco also along Hankow Road. Their bags and wallets are all made of lambskin or cowhide.
There are a number of money changers in the area. Do a canvass first before exchanging and ask for a better rate if you are exchanging large amounts.
TRANSPORT / GETTING THERE
we purchased the Airport Express Travel Pass HKD$220. this is a good buy because you get single trip Airport Express + 72 hours free unlimited travel on the MTR
http://www.mtr.com.hk/eng/tourist/tourist_products.html
TIP - you do not have to blindly follow the queue and wait to buy the Airport Express Travel Pass at the Airport once you reach Arrival Hall. the Pass can be purchased from Hong Kong Station (or other Interchange Station) when you alight to change trains. there's no gantry to enter the Airport Express Train (that's why you don't need to buy the Pass yet). once you reach the Interchange Station, there will be exit gantry and you need the pass to get out and make the change to the normal MTR trains (there will be service counters to assist you and sell you the pass). each pass has a HKD$50 refundable deposit or you can just forget about it and bring home the pass as a souvenier
the reason we bought the single Airport Express rather than the 2-trips Airport Express Pass (HKD$300) is because we planned the itinerary to go to CityGates Outlet on the last day. this is at Tung Chung Station (normal MTR - orange colour line) and the Airport Express doesn't go there. after last day of shopping at CityGates Outlet, you can take a bus number "S1" (10mins wait + 20 mins ride, HKD$3.50 per person) to the Airport Bus Terminus, very easy to find, bus has luggage compartment space behind the driver for you to put your big luggage
ROOM & RATES
took up the Deluxe Queen Room (average around S$150/night, inclusive of one night on a Friday, thus making it more expensive than usual).
looks very similar to the photo from hotel site, more expensive than the Standard Queen Room and more spacious
http://www.hotelbenito.com/eng/accomodation/accomodation.htm
room size is okay, facing the street but not noisy (we were on 6th floor, highest is 8th floor), considered normal hotel room size, the standard queen room (from photo) looked like it would have been a bit too small but should still be okay if you are not that particular about the space (seems like the difference is just one side of bed walking space) - price difference for the one side of walking space was around S$25-S$30/night
bed is quite firm, good support for back? this is probably a personal preference thing. the LCD TV is quite small (seems like 21" only) - channels are BORING, watching the TV there just made us fall asleep faster
attached bathroom only with standing shower, no bath-tub, standard accessories and toiletries present, hairdryer provided, room has a safe and bar fridge (nothing inside though)
room interior is clean and modern look, tidied up once every morning (seems to be around 9-11am)
SERVICE
staff are generally friendly and do try to be helpful, but as we don't speak cantonese, it can be a bit difficult to really understand each other sometimes, but they are still okay with english and mandarin. if you are conversant in cantonese, the staff should probably be able to offer more tips and guides for nearby shopping and food
TIP - you can borrow umbrella (quite big - the golf umbrellas type) from the hotel if you need (but it's not very good for using in TST area though - because the walkways are quite small and crowded and you will keep bumping into others / open+close when walking past other people)
LOCATION - location is good, near to TST MTR exit B2
http://maps.google.com.sg/maps?q=Tsim+Sha+Tsui,+Hong+Kong&hl=en&ll=22.298522,114.172926&spn=0.002037,0.004128&sll=1.359,103.818&sspn=0.563575,1.056747&z=19
Just 1 minute walk from EXIT B2 to the hotel, from hotel to TST MTR Entry Gate (including the underground walkway) is probably around or less than 5 minutes
although we booked the hotel for its proximity to the MTR, we soon realised that most of the shopping we did were around the TST area (Nathan Road, Canton Road & the smaller streets such as Granville, Cameron, Carnavron, etc) ... so in actual fact, being so close to the MTR is also not that much of a big benefit if you are only going to go out in the morning once and return in the evening, any others nearby in the TST area would have offered the same convenience
Other hotels we looked at included the Butterfly on Prat (which looks more like a real boutique hotel) and YMCA Salisbury, and even though Benito is supposedly a "boutique hotel", it's really more like a "budget / cheap business hotel"
WIFI & INTERNET
free WIFI in hotel lobby available - but didn't try. there's free wired internet in the hotel room (not WIFI) - didn't try because didn't bring laptop. you might be able to access free WIFI from room via the street stores but it's a hit and miss, we got it on the first night only, and couldn't access anymore after that
NEARBY FOOD
just downstairs is a typical food store (not exactly a "CHAR CHAN TENG" aka teahouse / tea restaurant) but you can still buy some breakfast - local style, local food.
if you want the usual fast-food, McDonalds, Burger King & KFC are all just opposite the Hotel building
a better food street nearby would be at HAU FOOK STREET (off Carnarvon Road)

Another food street within walking distance is at LOCK ROAD (off Haiphong Road)

The hotel also made us to pay for a broken coffee mug, which slipped on the slanted glass holder in the comfort room/toilet and when asked to fix it, the lady at the counter insinuated that we loosened the screws because everything was in order before we arrived. Also, because our flight was in the evening we stored our luggage near the check-in counter, which was alright but when we came back earlier in the afternoon as my grandson was not feeling well, we waited in the very small reception room with a bench good for 3 persons and when we asked if we can use the comfort room the lady at the reception told us that these are for guests only and since we have checked out we are no longer their guests though we are waiting for their transportation service for the airport. As my grandson was coughing very hard a guy approached us offered to bring us to the airport earlier possibly to get rid of us. .
The hotel is indeed in a very good location and I would like to commend their transportation service including the driver and the guy who who helped us with our luggage.
.
We had a long day and decided to stay in and drink some of our duty free with our friends, we requested a bucket of ice about 2030hrs and it was very small, about enough to make 8 mixed drinks (2 each) so we called again about 2130hrs to request another, no problem but surly attitude from the housekeeper who delivered it. When we asked for another at 2215 hrs we were refused claiming that we had already had two so there was no more. At this stage I went down to the front desk to get some thinking that they were just to lazy to bring it up, but they claimed that they had "run out".
We were given no other options or further assistance, the whole level of service here is quite disappointing a simple request of ice was met a level of disdain and experience disappointing.
After 2 weeks in Vietnam where customer service was amazing and the rooms were twice the size and half the price , the arrogance displayed here was certainly was surprising and certainly impacts my decision to come back to Hong Kong.
Let me tell you a quick story first... Our nanny has been with us for 3 years and has been excellent with our kids. We decided to give her a surprise on her birthday - a trip to Hong Kong. This would be her first time to get a passport and yes, get on a plane. I then decided to bring along the other more reliable nanny - my mom, my kids' grandmother. So you could imagine, Hong Kong, not being the cheapest of destinations, I needed a hotel that can house all of us and I need it to be safe, clean and accessible. My search spanned from airbnbs to 5 star luxury hotels. Airbnbs were a NO since I checked the hotel facade via google street view and it looked unsafe. 5 star luxury would cost me both arms and legs considering the number of people travelling with us and their stringent rules on maximum occupancy per room. I probably went through atleast 50 options and it all boils down to Hotel Benito - and as usual, I was right.
Let me save you the trouble - Hotel Benito IS the hotel you need to book if you are travelling with your family.
SPACE - Our room was the family room that had 1 queen sized bed and 1 twin bed. But don't fret, there was a lot of room for us to move freely. The bathroom was spacious too.
CLEANLINESS - I can still remember the pleasant scent, think a mix of Abercrombie and Fitch's signature stores smell and lemon grass. The light colored wood designs on the furniture and flooring was immaculate. It did not feel as if I needed to do a wipe test.
ACCESSIBILITY - Literally around the corner from the Tsim Sha Tsui subway exit (without and escalator though). Also there is a 24H McDonald's across the street for early morning or late night meals and other fast food dining options. Most of all, it is very near Kowloon Park - perfect for a stroll with the family.
EASY ON THE WALLET - Compared to what I would have spent booking two rooms in a 4/5 star hotel, this place did not break the bank. All things considered, this place is worth every Hong Kong Dollar.
Finally, and probably the most important...
SERVICE
I have to be honest, my interactions with the locals of Hong Kong were less than desirable, it may be the language barrier or just a difference in culture. To be frank, I found myself thinking, on a number of occassions, "How rude..." However, coming back home to Hotel Benito, after a long day, and being greeted pleasantly by the staff was a relief.
The doorman/bellboy/concierge was a middle-aged gentleman that shared stories with my mother of his grandchildren. My first impression, due to his robust movements, was "Oh no, another rude local I have to be patient with." (I apologize for throwing the word rude around ) But then I later realized, after tagging our luggage and saying, "Ok, I take care of your luggage." He was just moving quickly to serve us better. He was there for us during checkin, for the duration of our stay, and when we checked out. He was the last impression Hotel Benito made on us and it was very pleasant.
Thank you for the wonderful stay and your patience with our requests!
P.S. I'm giving sleep quality 5 stars since the air conditioner was working perfectly fine and I slept soundly knowing that my family was safe and secure.
