My Wife and myself stayed at Troppo Mystique over Christmas and New Year. We were welcomed by the owners who diffinatly went the extra mile to make our holiday a very pleasant stay.
The room was extremly comfortable and we were impressed with the emmentities, like the full size fridge, the hammocks on the deck, the BBQ on the water front was an amassing place to eat in the evenings and watch the most amassing Sun-Sets.
We loved our visits into town on the local and interesting Buses, and meet some lovely people. The local markets are just great, you can buy very fresh fruit and vegetables and the Pineapples and Mangoes are out of this world for taste and flavour. The local shops and cafes give good service and generous servings.
Our first visit to Port Villa, and certainly not our last, we would personally recommend Troppo Mystique and Port Villa for a great holiday.

Covid finally over! Do not skip over Troppo Mystique! Although a tricky place to get to the driver is really only 10 or so minutes from town. The view is stunning - across the lagoon. The hosts (Annie and Garry) are really friendly and accommodating. The units are modern and tastefully decorated -like a real house, not a cookie cutter hotel room or apartment at all. The location is very VERY quiet.

We stayed at Troppo Mystique for 7 days over Xmas, and it was exceptional. No busy resort, it was a great stay for adults, with 4 villas on the property. The owners are very hands on and knowledgeable of the island. Lovely sunsets, with boat trips to Erakor Island and the Warwick for dinner and drinks. A little removed from Port Vila but that was a bonus for us. All the amenities you could want, including a fully equipped kitchen which was super handy. All in all a great stay was had for a great budget.

When we arrived at the airport there was was no one there to pick us up, but in fairness we had not received an email from Troppo Mystique confirming our arrival arrangements. We were picked up and transported to the accommodation stopping off on the way to collect some groceries for our stay. Troppo Mystique provides a self contained cabin and that is all. So you will need to stock up on supplies before you arrive. There is no TV only some old DVDs.

The accommodation is set in ideallic surrounds just watch out for falling coconuts.

The cleanliness of the rooms was not we have come to expect on our travels.
We had glasses, dishes plus pots and pans that had not be cleaned properly. We requested that the oven be cleaned before we would cook on it which was done. The BBQs also needed a good clean. The cupboards were dirty and there were spider webs hanging from the ceiling of the unit and behind the bed head. Following a heavy burst of rain our kitchen and lounge room floors were flooded through holes in the roof so we had to move to another cabin.

You should consider hiring a car because Troppo Mystique is out of Port Villa. Yes a local bus is available but runs on Vanuatu time not a structured timetable or necessarily a consistent route. The Vanuatu people are really lovely and the children very inquisitive and loads of fun to engage with.

Catch the "tinny" to Erakor Island resort the beer is cold and the cocktail list expansive. The food is great but expect the pay the same price you would for a meal in either Sydney or Melbourne (if your an Aussie) in other words it is expensive. It cost us for a 2 course meal plus drinks over $200AU. But the food is good and the service first rate, very down to earth.

Our overall experience was disappointing. Firstly because of the time of year that we went, February, super humid. In fact the humidity at times was unbearable. This meant everything felt damp, your clothes, the bedding, the lounges. My wife and I have travelled extensively through Europe, Asia and the South Sea islands this was our tick the bucket list trip to Vanuatu.

The water in the lagoon is warm and there are broken bits of coral on the sea floor so be careful where you step. You also need to be aware of inquisitive sea snakes although we did not encounter any, thank God, and we were told there are rather large sea slugs that inhabit the lagoon.

Finally, Troppo Mystique is starting to show her age. There is a need for some repair and maintenance to be done by professional trades people not just the local handyman.

Response from Troppo_Mystique, Owner at Troppo Mystique
Responded 22 Feb 2020
It’s with sincere regret & a shame to read, this guest couple were disappointed having chosen Vanuatu & Troppo Mystique as their destination. There is much to read on Trip-advisor & various web sites about gathering information to meet one’s holiday expectations /seasons to suit / budgets to accommodate, so as to happily embrace one’s holiday in one of the most cultural contrasting & adventurous pacific islands. This couple selected Troppo Mystique’s Waterfront Coco Villa -Stylish- Island style - 5 foot veranda- hammocks- Base tariff - $99.00 per night.( Additional for 2nd person.). Guest couple booked through a world-renowned travel/ flight agency. Booking terms stipulate an essential formality prior to guests arrival, as set out below. .BOOKING TERMS.- Important information •Airport shuttle fee: AUD 40 per vehicle (one-way) . YOU NEED TO KNOW. Air conditioning is not provided. WE SHOULD MENTION. Guests must transfer via shuttle to the property. Guests must contact the property at least 72 hours before travel, using the contact information on the confirmation received after booking. This property offers transfers from the airport (surcharges may apply). Guests must contact the property with arrival details before travel, using the contact information on the booking confirmation. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. Firstly, for clarification, guest couple made no contact with Troppo Mystique prior to arrival. Concerned with booking, three days prior to guests arrival date, Troppo Mystique sent guests an E mail to their confirmed address, requesting flight arrival information. Troppo Mystique did not receive any response from these guests, indicating guests were of ‘No Show”. Troppo Mystique was only contacted via airport after guest’s flight landing. Transfer was promptly organized by Troppo. Fortunately, guests were picked up within minutes. The Villa’s are advertised as self- contained with an airport transfer inclusive of a complimentary supermarket stop-over for guests to stock up family sized fridge / freezer Troppo Mystique Villa’s are advertised with a D.V.D screen. There is an abundance of D.V.D’s available through-out the Villa’s for circulation, with some iconic movies. The Villa’s are prepared by Housekeepers, to best of standards with added touches of island flowers beautifully scattered & arranged in the Villa. The housekeepers are very accommodating local ladies/mothers/ grandmothers from the village. On arrival afternoon, guest reported she “had issues”, indicating to one pot. The pot was clean, but hard-water residue was evident. In the case of any further concerns, all pots / pans were promptly replaced. Regarding stove/ oven- regretfully some crumbs were overlooked by housekeeper at oven bottom door hinge & top surface. These were promptly wiped away in seconds & apologies were conveyed. Some webs had arisen within the interim of Housekeepers completion of duties, which were promptly attended to. Troppo Mystique offers a Housekeeper service if guests desire, to sweep/ mop/ bed make- change sheets- bath towels- etc, Monday - Friday. Guest couple welcomed this service on a occasion. February is renowned as one of Vanuatu’s tropically humid months. Troppo’s unique location on water’s edge generally captures the breeze & the villa’s all have descending cooling fans. However, for guests who prefer air conditioning, there are alternatives to some wonderful air- conditioned resort hotels in Port Vila. February is most climatic, being our tropically wet month. It bought with it this month, some intense down- falls as cyclone Ushi brushed passed our islands shores. Minor damaged was caused creating “a” water leak above guests “Coco Villa’s kitchen area which was mopped by housekeeper. Situation assessed - leak could have been readily fixed - However, Troppo Mystique chose to upgrade guests to “The Lagoon Sunset Villa”- at no additional cost. . Port Vila & around island hosts some excellent Restaurants, with enticing menus of our islands organic fruits / vegetables/ Santo beef. Prices are worldly competitive for such well sought-after quality. In the Villa’s, a Welcome Booklet makes mention of falling coconuts/ wearing reef shoes, which are available to guests in sports cupboard. It’s extremely rare to see any of guests mentioned sea creatures. The amazing warm sea’s, sights of stunning starfish & Nemo’s around the atolls, is to be enjoyed. Local buses are frequent for 150 vatu ( approx. $2.00 ) into town, meanwhile our local bus driver offers door to door service for only a little more. There are also numerous car rental companies. They will deliver & pick-up rental vehicles to/ from Troppo’s guests door, as the guest couple engaged in booking for part stay. On departure day, guests were provided with later check-out. A complimentary transfer to airport, was also provided as guests declared their holiday budget was unable to meet the return transfer. Troppo Mystique trusts upon the explanations to this posting, a continued enthusiasm will always prevail for anyone wishing to visit & explore our unique beautiful pacific island.

One of the most beautiful places we have stayed. The spot was just magical. Our hosts Annie and Gary were wonderfully helpful and went out of their way to make us welcome and looked after. Can’t wait to come back to visit. The sunsets are simply beautiful.

I booked in for 6 nights, and only stayed 1! The location is right in the middle of a nuvan village. terrible road. noisy...all night. TV and DVD didn't work. Crown of thorns starfish cover the lagoon. (dangerous) constant burning off fires.Sure it looks lovely...but I would not recommend it at all. I pre-paid, and the owner will not refund me.It is a scam. The owner wanted payment up front. There are many better places to stay, on much better beaches. I have had tourist accommodation for many years. I do not recommend this place at all. BEWARE PEOPLE.

Response from Troppo_Mystique, Owner at Troppo Mystique
Responded 11 Sept 2017
How sad that this guest chose to book, 6 months in advance, to spend 6 nights at my beautiful, peaceful, alternative, waterfront accommodation, when she would clearly have been much happier in a large, commercial resort in town. Selecting accommodation to suit individual tastes and needs is now made so much easier, with detailed online review forums providing actual customer experience. Let me address some of the errors in this review. 1. Location: As advertised, Troppo Mystique is located a short distance out of busy Port Vila, and is accessed via a road through the local village, whose friendly inhabitants and their traditional ways of life, such as canoe fishing, and cooking the evening meal on small, open wood fires, is part of the ambiance. 2. Roads: Vanuatu is a developing nation. While there is a good, sealed round around the island of Efate, most secondary roads are unsealed, and potholes are a way of life. 3. Lagoon Swimming: The crystal clear waters of Erakor Lagoon are renowned for safe swimming. There are many beautiful, large, pink and red starfish in the lagoon. These are completely harmless. They are most definitely not crown of thorns starfish. 3. Noise: Erakor resort, across the water from Troppo Mystique, is a popular wedding venue. On the 1x night that this guest stayed, there was a Ni-Vanuatu wedding in progress across the water – accompanied by music and laughter. It's true that the festivities continued until well into the night on the one and only night that this guest stayed, but normal peace and tranquility reigned for the following 5 nights. 4. TV/DVD player: The flat screen TV in the Villa this guest stayed in, was 2 weeks old at the time, in perfect working order, with an operating manual on the table beside it. Had the guest come and asked me, I could easily have helped her to turn it on. 5. Internet: Free internet is available 24/7 in all Villas. On the day of her arrival, this guest had access to the internet on her tablet, but according to unpleasant communications after she had left, she was unable to configure her mail box. This is nothing to do with the internet service we provide, but she could have seeked further help. In summary, this guest booked and paid for 6 night's accommodation at Troppo Mystique. The day she after her arrival, she went to town to hire a car, then at some stage returned to the villa, collected her belongings, and left. She did not inform me that she was leaving, nor give me the opportunity to address any of the problems she apparently encountered in her short stay. I did not hear from her until she had returned home, when she emailed, threatening to circulate damning reviews such as this one, unless I agreed to refund 60% of her payment, despite the fact that she was fully aware of our cancellation and refund policies at the time of booking. We strongly suggest that this guest consider purchasing travel insurance before her next trip.

We stayed 29 December 2016 to 5 January 2017. We were looking for a place to kick back and relax, snorkel, laze in the sun and snooze. And we got it. We arrived at 11.30pm and were picked up by John our driver and whisked away to our villa and snooze. Woke early (god I was like a child at xmas - I can't sleep, I can't sleep). Flicked the wooden slats open and - WOW, there's paradise. Sun, sand, clear lagoon and warmish at 6am (yep). Annie appeared from the front villa - gosh, she makes the little resort perfect too. Such a lovely hostess. She drove us to the cbd at Port Vila (about 20 mins away) and we bought veges from the market. we then stopped at 2 more places and bought French bread and meat. headed home for a swim and a general laze about. next day - lazed about again. just snorkeling and swimming. the glorious days melded together. John took us on a day trip around the island and we swam in the Blue Lagoon. Awesome. Had lunch at the Wahoo Bar - fish burger, beef burger and beers - damn awesome too. we also had a day trip on the trimaran - Sailaway Cruise. 3 more awesome snorkeling spots, the middle stop saw us moor at the island where Survivor Vanuatu was filmed. one of the days, we got a water taxi across to the resort on Erakor Island - seemed a great place for families, kids, young ones etc. But too resorty for us - we prefer self catering - BBQing in the evening sun, wine, beer shared with Troppo and Coconut (see pics). A fantastic place for R & R. A total credit to Annie too - we miss her!!

TIP: Take alcohol and crisps/peanuts with you. the bread is yummo there (French influence). and the fruit is plentiful and inexpensive. stock up at the market. Meat - recommend stick to the eye fillet. the other meat was tough-ish including the veal and pork, even once marinated.

Just got back from 4 nights at the 2 bedroom villa. So many things we loved about it, as can be read in other reviews too, above all, our amazing host Annie.
The villa is in a good location, a little out of the way, but you will find buses to take you to places if you walk 5 mins up the steep hill.
I just like to warn you about how the animals in the property can potentially make your peaceful night sleeps difficult, almost impossible.
The property has many roosters that will start crowing at 10 pm (!!) and take turn all the way through to the morning (usually stop around 8:00am). Along with two dogs that bark for hours after midnight, this was the case the entire length of our stay...So if you like your quiet night sleep when on holiday, this definitely won't be a good option for you. Just imagine you will be staying at a busy farm.

It’s wonderful to read your appreciation of the many things you enjoyed & loved about “Troppo Mystique”, having been hi lighted over previous years by numerous guests. Regarding catching buses, guests welcome information mentions-” Local buses are frequent. Approx 10 mins from town. Buses can be caught from the “hill- road side”, near Troppo Mystique.....Meanwhile, door to door can be arrange -Troppo Mystique offers no obstacles.- A mobile phone is supplied in the Villa for guests convenience of local calls & should they wish, arranging door to door, bus / water or road taxi transport. Reference to your mention of roosters and 2 dogs, I am sincerely sorry. You should have mentioned your concern as I would have readily & kindly rectified the situation. For the record, the neighbours “wanders” have been re-homed. Troppo Mystique is not a farm, but a special “tropical island paradise”.

Chez Troppo isn't easy to find. The road isn't the best and people in the nearby Erakor Village don't even seem to know it exists... but once you find it, you're happy you did. It is a little hidden gem very close to Port Vila (about 15min away from the centre of town, I'd say) but it feels a lot more remote and secluded. Ideal if you want to relax without wanting to be too far away from everything else.

Annie is a delightful host and made us feel very welcome. The houses are beautifully decorated and have everything you need. We loved the little touches like the fresh coconut water on arrival... It is so well equipped we only wish we had stayed longer and made the most out of the bbq outside and all the amenities.

The beach, only a few steps away from your room, is beautiful (we miss the sunset there already...) and you get free use of the kayaks too. A free ferry takes you across to Erakor island whenever you want (you just have to ask Annie and she arranges for the ferry to pick you within minutes). We went over to Erakor and spent a great afternoon on the beach there. We feel like we had everything the people staying on Erakor island had, and then some more, for less money.

Chez Troppo was a great choice and we would not hesitate to stay there again.

We have recently returned from an 8 day trip to Vanuatu and we all wish we were still there. We stayed in 2 different placesand enjoyed both but the smile did not come off my face the whole time at Chez Troppo. It is a beautiful piece of paradise. Well done to Archie and Annie for creating such a piece of heaven and thanks for sharing it with us.The accomodation is very modern and comfortable. We loved it.
My husband enjoyed his early morning walks around the village, meeting the locals and buying bread for a breakfast as well as our evenings in the local kava bar. My tween daughter enjoyed playing with the friendly local children and my teenage son enjoyed exploring the beautiful Erakor lagoon on a kayak and snokelling there too. Kayaking across to Erakor Isalnd for dinner was a highlight. Annie and Archie were fantastic hosts and I was lucky enough to be shown around a school in Port Vila with Annie.
Other highlights of our trip were snokelling at Hideaway Island, A day trip to Lelepa Island, Mele cascades, horse riding at Club Hippique, exploring the organic fruit markets and catching the local taxis. Wecould not have had a better time and I'm already saving to return!!!!!
