Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Had the best weekend out with the family. Kulau lodge is an awesome place. The staff and the owners are so friendly and very helpful. The apartment was so awesome, we had the view of the sea, stories around a fire by night and we enjoyed our stay so very much. Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable and look forward for another visit soon.

I travel often to PNG and have spent a great deal of time in the Kokopo/Rabaul area. Kokopo always seemed to have the nicer hotels (Kokopo Beach Resort is very nice) which are fairly expensive.
We discovered the Kulau Lodge by accident as we were driving by the bay opposite the port of Rabaul. We looked across the beach at a series of structures that had the appearance of a resort.
We drove over to see the property and what was evident immediately was that the property grounds were beautiful. The view to the beach from the outdoor covered patio looked like a Corona commercial.
The rooms themselves were in the process of being upgraded, we stayed in two bedroom town home that either has a full kitchen or just a refrigerator. The rooms themselves are a little tired, however they are spotlessly cleaned and very comfortable.
If you are traveling to stay in your hotel room, you may not like the quality of the rooms. However, if you come to stay at the beach and enjoy the beauty of PNG, this may be the best value in the entire country.
Leilani and her husband Ryan have done a great job of rebuilding the property and hiring and training a very good staff that is there to help you enjoy your stay. The restaurant serves surprisingly good food and the bar is open.
They offer pickup from the airport and will meet you when you arrive.
Although from the rooms standpoint this is not a five star experience, however from the location and the beauty of the property, it is definitely a 5 star experience.

Stayed with some Aussie friends on their 1st visit to PNG. Excellent service. Friendly Staff. Beautiful location. The rooms are dated Circa 1970s but spacious, clean and comfortable. Large grounds set right on the beachfront. Plenty of space to wander and enjoy. Dining area is large and very comfortable. Attentive staff. Great food. Great bar selection too - beer, wine, cider. Thanks Leilani and Ryan. We will be back.

Our family traced to PNG and had an amazing adventure and a very comfortable stay here. The food was very good and the managers of the resort were very helpful and accommodating.
My highlight was catching a 1.4meter mackerel in the bay just by the resort. There are so many WW2 relics scattered about the place and even an old submarine base. So much history and culture.

Had several visits to Kulau Lodge in 2018 while living in Kokopo, East New Britain. Lovely paradice setting, set in private beach, family run business. Relaxed, authentic pacific setting and accommodation. Great food, using local produce. Highly recommended when in East New Britain

From the time we booked till the time we left we were treated like family. The accommodation was homely and very comfortable. The food provided was delicious and the staff were eager to help with amazing tours of the area.
From traditional markets; to exploration of WW2 submarine bases and amazing relics; to climbing a live volcano; to fishing in the bay for massive mackerel. A holiday l will never forget. Kulau Lodge with it’s relaxing ‘Housewind’ restaurant area was a great base to explore the region.
