Detailed Reviews
My husband and I had to stay here for part of one night after our connecting domestic flight was cancelled and Air Nuigini put us up in this hotel. I think we had a premier room. It was a couple of floors up and a convoluted walk away from from reception. There isn't an elevator but we had help with the luggage. The main part of the room appears to have been renovated and clean though the curtains were stained and in need of replacement. Bed was comfortable. Bottled water provided as well as tea/coffee making. The bathroom was fairly run down and in need of renovation. Our room looked out over the main road outside and there was a fair bit of traffic noise. WiFi good. Had dinner in the hotel restaurant and because it was being covered by Air Nuigini we were only entitled to the buffet. It was pretty ordinary, food not very tasty, lukewarm with limited offerings. We advised reception that we had to be back at the airport at 3am (along with several other people) and reception were a bit vague on whether they would provide a shuttle before 3 am. Initially they said they would even though the official start time for their shuttle was 3.15ish. Along with several people we waited at reception until well after 3am for the shuttle so they had no plans for trying to get us to the airport at the advised time. We got to the airport then joined huge queues of people trying to get into and through the domestic airport. We only just made our flight with seconds to spare. It might be convenient to the airport (about 5-10 minutes drive) but I wouldn't stay here if I had a choice.

Thanks, Lara, for the great feedback. All points have been noted by Coral Sea Hotels and I am happy to confirm that they are currently being addressed. By the end of 2023, all rooms will have been renovated with new Bathrooms, as will all 6 F&B Outlets. For the Shuttle, yes, we offer complimentary to the Airport and our other city hotels. We will retrain the Front Office to avoid any confusion. Hope you get to see the all new Gateway in 2024

The Gateway Hotel is close to the airport and has an efficient shuttle service. Check in was very simple, and even offered very early.
Small gift shops have done small PNG artefacts for sale, including some carvings and bilums (bags).
In house bars and restaurants serve quality meals at reasonable prices. Small health spa on premises, but didn't try the services here.
The hotel is quiet, not a lot of noise coming from outside.
Clean, comfortable and convenient.

Good morning, Thank you for your recently posted feedback on Gateway Hotel and Apartments, we appreciate you kind comments and of course for making the time to post these. Due to recent changes to business in line with COVID restrictions we have been somewhat more limited in in our food and beverage offerings. Sizzlers Family Restaurant will be re-opened on the 1st March and the Departure Lounge will return to limited trading with a focus on sporting events. As we move into 2021 - renovations will be underway for the main hotel swimming pool upgrade and surrounding areas - we have exciting new menus being launched in Jackson's Restaurant and a new refreshing buffet concepts. Again, we thank you for you time to comment on your stay and wish to see you next time you return to Gateway Hotel and Apartments.

Booked for a two-bedroom apartment for the Christmas Period. Time of check in however there were no available two bedrooms available, but they upgraded us to a three bedroom because we paid in advance. Customer Service was great, room was amazing with a great view of the airport - Definitely made the holiday much more special. I would definitely recommend for anyone looking for a short stay in POM with family.

The Gateway was booked by my company for a mandatory quarantine on entry to PNG.
A shuttle bus collected us at the arrival doors at Jackson Airport.
We were given a 2 bed apartment, spacious, comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms, two private balconies & a terrace at the back on the ground floor.
We were served 3 set meals a day & could also order from the extensive mixed menu but no need as the food was varied & very good.
My wife, son & I are all of the same opinion - Staff were very helpful, friendly & ensured we were looked after without question.
The hotel itself has different restaurants, bars, gift shop & barbers all within the secure compound.
If you are visiting Lae this is the place to stay!

Rated as a 4 star but lucky if it’s even 3
It’s not the staff’s fault, they are just obviously undertrained.
But they do not know how to do their job.
The rooms were very dirty, in a Covid world it is a massive worry. When I asked to change rooms I had to sit in my dirty room for 3 hours until a clean one was made available. This was slightly better.
I needed to leave early to get a 6am flight. With pre flight covid testing requirements I needed to leave extra early.
I rang before bed to say I would be checking out at 3 am and was assured driver was available at that time.
Upon arriving at deserted reception area a security guard was eventually able to track down some staff to check me out.
After check out, No driver could be found, no keys to the bus could be found and everyone just stood looking at each other not knowing what to do next.
40 mins later and I got some random guy one of staff knew to take me in his car. Very nice of him.
Was last person to arrive at the testing area prior to check in.
It’s slightly cheaper than the other hotels available in Pom, but I would recommend spending extra to stay elsewhere.

Good day Mr. Decarteret, Thank you for your recent feedback received on tripadvisor, please accept my apologizes in delaying correspondence to you, it took me a couple of days to draw the feedback pertaining to your stay. As I understand Sir you checked out of the hotel early in the morning only to go to the airport and on cancellation of your flight return to the hotel - on that particular morning and having high occupancy during the period the hotel had no clean rooms available to check you back into. Rather than leaving you sitting in the public areas, the staff on duty re-checked you back into your original room while they sorted an alternate room for you or had housekeeping make up the room for you. From there I understand the staff re-checked you back into a Premier Suite with an upgrade just after noon that day. With reference to the Airport Transfers, we have a driver who should come onto shift at 3am should their be any early morning transfers, traditionally the terminal is not open till 4am with first planes departing at 6am. Should their be a delay with this persons arrival at work (we have scheduled drop off's and pick ups for staff) we have a number of alternates available with Duty Managers / Expatriate Managers on site who are on call to assist so that their should be limited unnecessary delays. On behalf of the hotel management I wish to apologies for the delay with having your room prepared following your early check out and return to the hotel. Unfortunately on that day we did not meet your expectation as a return guest, which I can only apologies for. I understand that you pass though Port Moresby regularly and do hope in the near future as your transit through Port Moresby that we are able to again accommodate you visit and provide you with an improved guest experience, such as we have many times in the past.

I made an online booking for the Gateway Hotel through a 3rd party booking agency for 1 night cost approx. 160 AUD standard room, after having stayed at this hotel many times over the years one would say the hotel has nothing great but was consistent and clean and nice staff and most times value for money.
however how things have changed, I was placed in a refurbished standard room well they were meant to be refurbished in 2021 or 2020 well i was disgusted and simply august by the state of this room, had my flight in not be delayed and my arrival was well after 8pm and i needed to be at the airport by 4 in the morning i would have been a right Karen at the desk.
photos show the green mould on windows inside and out, it shows snot and blood on the walls spider webs in the ceiling corners, the state of the bathroom was terrible

I love Coral Sea Hotels and I always book my business travel accommodation with them but Gateway shocked me with its terrible service. I had arrived from the airport after 1pm and wanted to check in to my room before heading to the office as a matter of urgency but was asked to wait “while my room was being cleaned”. My employer had paid for everything prior to my travel so I was appalled at the hotels lack of professionalism to have rooms ready well in advance of guests checking in.
To add insult to injury, I was given the most inconvenient room in the entire hotel, so tiny and lacked any kind of view (it could’ve been a janitors closet converted into a room), the TV wasn’t working, there was something very wrong with the bathroom fan that kept making a lot of noise when the light was switched on.
It didn’t help that the front desk receptionists were horrible and lacked any training in being friendly and polite to hotel guests checking in. Would be worthwhile to run a customer care & friendliness Training for the people who are essentially the face of the hotel.

Thank you for sharing your valuable feedback EmzSuri. While we always try and have rooms ready for check-in time, this depends on the checkout time of the guest before, due to the nature of an airport hotel. I understand some rooms have dated bathrooms, and these are currently undergoing a full refurbishment.

I imagine that some time in the last century this may have been a good hotel. It is now utterly and exquisitely awful and you must not stay here - not least because it is as expensive as its vastly superior competitors. Rooms and buildings are run down. staff are untrained, demotivated and paid late, wifi is almost unusable, drinks are watered, and nobody gives a toss. Breakfast is great but is not enough of a saving grace to justify anyone, ever, staying here again.

What a terrible, terrible shame….once upon a time, only about 7-8 years ago, this was a reasonable hotel. Now, overrun, falling apart, very very little maintenance, lousy aircon, completely demoralized staff. What a shame….!!!
I checked in for an overnight a few weeks ago, no aircon in reception, no aircon in room, no hot water, phone from reception to room not working and the lady at reception simply couldn’t give a toss. Many, many customers complaining about same issues.
The hotel is simply falling apart. Since the new management have taken over it’s absolutely evident that not a penny has been poured back into the upkeep of the hotel.
Not recommended whatsoever I’m sorry to say.

We needed a couple nights in POM to visit Varirata after birding in the Highlands. This hotel was chosen for proximity to the airport. Check in was a mess. I had booked a queen as it was the only option on the Expedia partner. But when we arrived I asked for a twin share. One lady said it was ok if we were willing to wait until one was cleaned. So we waited an hour and a half only to be told by another lady that she couldn't switch the room type because we booked online. OK, fine..... just don't waste our time if you can't switch the room type!
Concierge was great helping us get taxis to the Nature Park and other sights.
No loungers by the pool and no one giving towels. They did bring towels just as we were leaving to go back to the room. We didn't eat there, brought back food from the supermarket at Vision City and made sandwiches.
Wifi is dodgy, up and down. Showers are hot. Tv worked fine, has some Aussie channels. AC was a bit too cold at night.
On day of check out a lady phoned at 09:00 and tried to chase us out early but official check out is 10:00 and we wanted to relax in the room before going to the airport.
