Detailed Reviews
Ask the expat community in Bangui, CAR where to stay, the almost universal response is the JM Residences. For good reason. The hotels are well run and the folks who run them seem honorable and attentives. Why? Here's my story at my experience at the "JM3" and the JM hotel. The JM3 is an apartment complex for longer term visitors. I booked into the hotel, but it was full. They moved me to the much larger JM3 residence, about half a kilometer away and I had a very pleasant stay in a proper two bedroom apartment with solid internet and cable TV. No upcharge, no arguement about whether the confusion about the reservation was my fault or theirs or my customers etc etc; they just moved me and charged me the agreed upon rate for the hotel room. That was proper customer service. When I moved back to the hotel, I found the rooms to be more than adequate. Not luxurious but clean, well maintained with solid internet and cable. The restuarant is good, the breakfast is included in the room rate. As for its location, its just up from the center city, in the better neighborhood of Bangui. Bangui is not a large town and one can get to most places by a short taxi ride, or a longer walk. The hotel taxis are more expensive but if you want the local taxis, walk down the street and one will be around shortly. The customers at the hotel are the usual expat crowd of diplomatics, NGOs, bankers and businessmen and that alone is a good reason to stay at the JM. I prefer the hotel because of the ambiance but the residence may be better for those with a longer stay where having kitchen, dining, and seperate living may be more advantegous. Others have said they find the City Center hotel better located in the city center, and I agree. It looks ok, I haven't stayed there but others have and said it is quite ok as well. Bangui itself is charming. The people are very nice, attractive, interesting. Not alot to do, a view of the Congo River, a few restuarants and clubs, a small tourist market, but all in all, not a bad place of the Africa hand on business in the heart of AFrica. I tried unsuccesffully to go to the closest pygmy village about 100 kilometers away on the morning of my depature but was stopped by a washed out road about 15 kilometers from the first pygmy village. The trip was interesting though, through thick rain forest and huge trees. It cost me about 50 usd using a local taxi; for about 100 usd the local travel agencies will make a land cruiser available for an all day guaranteed trip to the pygmy villages. My time was short as was my money but it probably would have been worthe the extra cash.

JM Residences 3 (near Cathedral) is a small, safe, and clean hotel. The rooms are bare bones -- the bedroom has a double bed, one tiny night table, an armoire. No table or chair or luggage rack so unless you ask for a chair, your luggage will go on the floor.
There is hot water, electricity, and the sheets and towels are clean and fresh. The mattress is lumpy, but the A/C is lovely and works quietly and well. As others have noted, wifi is sporadic and usually slow. It's about $5/day for internet. The staff are pleasant and the compound, which houses the bungalows that contain the rooms, is well-groomed with nice landscaping. There is a wall around the entire compound so it feels very safe, which is of utmost importance to me given that most hotels in Bangui are crawling with prostitutes.
The hotel is overpriced (at this writing, $170/night for the so-called "suite," $135/night for a regular room (referred to as a "grand" chambre, and $100/night for the "studio" -- a small room with full bathroom (shower only). When the new 200-room hotel built by the Chinese with Libyan funding opens in a few months, JM Residences will finally have some competition so their prices may go down. Right now, it's the only decent place to stay in Bangui.
Location is not ideal as it's a walk to town and the torrential rains during the rainy season mean that your clothes will be a red-brown mess since most of the roads from the hotel to town are laterite (red clay/dirt).
The restaurant is mediocre and overpriced but it's convenient. If you are a vegetarian, however, be prepared to eat lots of rice, potatoes, plantain, or couscous. For 2 out of 3 days so far, the only cooked vegetable they offer, green beans, have not been available.
If you come to Bangui, I would definitely recommend JM Residences 3, at least until we see what the new hotel is like. It is not easy to get a reservation as the place is booked, so book as early as you can. There are two other JM Residences, older than this one, and I've heard they are not as nice.

Bangui is definitely not a tourist place! Looking at the reviews of hotel in Bangui alarmed me and i decided to stay at JM residences. Probably this is the best place which is clean, secure and safe. There are 3 to 4 different properties of JM residences and I stayed at JM Residences 3. This place is basically group of houses separated and serviced like a hotel. - The place is clean and provides all the basic amenities.
- The internet connection although available, is extremely slow.
- A bar & restaurant is also available in the area
- The staff is polite and helpful

I stayed at JM Residence 2 in June 2011, i must admit that it was a very pleasant stay except a day of water outage which i had to manage a bucket to bath.
Apart from that, it was a very pleasant stay and the employees were very helpful at all times, i would recommend it to anyone who plans to visit Bangui in the near future.

The JM Residence is small and has limited room availability, but if you are lucky enough to get a reservation, it's the best option in the city. The room I stayed in was small but clean. The bathroom did not have a real shower, it consist of a plastic "showering area", drain hole and a shower nozzle. It is almost impossible to take a decent shower without getting water all over the floor in the bathroom. The toilet seat was much smaller than the actual toilet bowl.
The bed sheets were clean and the floors were mopped daily. There is internet access, but it is not very reliable. The restaurant/bar is decent, but the prices are pretty high. The staff does not speak very much English, but I found them very courteous and helpful. Just like most of Bangui, you must pay cash for your stay.

JMResidence 3 was where we stayed. The bookings were obtained after much discussions with the local sponsor and the JMR management. Having stayed here on the previous visit, this was the first choice because of the newness of the property and the cleanliness associated. It is a comfortable place to stay in Bangui and has the french TV stations plus wireless internet - which at times is slow to kick in. Haven't tried the food as yet - just one day into the stay, but from the last visit, quality os fairly okay. There are a few places to eat at - mainly French but I have tried the Lebanese place (Ali Baba). The Indian and Chinese restaraunts are still to be located.

I spent two weeks at this hotel, and given there is the best, Leger and all the rest...this is bad. Not for the accommodations as the best asset to this hotel was the shower. The biggest problem is it is extortionate, prices change daily on soda, and there is never any food in the restaurant. There are other better places to stay, and I would take the time to research them out. The Leger being a 5 star is super extortionate!

We stayed at JM 4, the newest of the JM properties. Management charged rates that exceeded a 4 star hotel ... for a long term apartment.
The apartment had a kitchen (room), with no stove and midget refrigerator and very few tools.
Electricity was sporadic. All 3 air conditioners burned up during our stay. Water was an orange/brown (filter rarely changed). Laundry was expensive. Yes, white clothes eventually turned orange/brown.
Staff was nice and friendly. The place was kept clean.
I would stay again, but not for those prices. There was supposed to be a new place opening ... built by the Japanese ... looked great from the outside.

+1
I've stayed four weeks in J.M. Residence in June-July 2018. I was staying in the one located on Rue Gamal Abd el Nasser, the street behind the Notre-Dame Cathedral. The area is one of the safest in Bangui and it has electricity almost 24/7. (The hotel also has a backup generator.)
I was in one of the suits, which is a slightly larger room with a small hall and own bathroom. The room was very basic, but it was clean and had AC, fridge and TV. All windows and doors are equipped with mosquito nets. The hotel has wifi however the speed varies a lot, and is usually pretty slow.
The hotel has breakfast where they serve milk, cereals, bread & pastries, fruits, instant coffee and you can order eggs; they order the pastries and bread daily from Grand Cafe. The restaurant serves meals for lunch and dinner and they have room service which is very convenient.
All in all, the hotel is a good option to stay while in Bangui, however the room prices are high (which is the case everywhere in Bangui it seems).

There is some improvement over the last months. The management is clearly taking their task serious, with an updated telephone system, staff who are not performing are being replaced. They are clearly benefiting from the overall lack of decent accommodation here in town and maintain therefore also extremely high prices compare with average quality.
