Detailed Reviews
Gregorio who runs this place has been a community leader in this Mayan community for many years. We took three tours which were lead by him and his brother. They know about the natural features and the ecology of the area. We left with a better understanding of what the life of the current residents is like and what their struggles are. Their friendliness was a pleasure to experience. The whole village was welcoming, even the dogs and the chickens

We stayed 3 nights with Gregorio. He and his brother both took us on really good tours. We saw so many different birds. Gregorio's wife is a good cook and was very accommodating to provide what we preferred as we don't eat meat. We enjoyed talking with the children living in the nearby homes. The room is basic but does have a fan. There isn't any hot water but the weather was so hot that a cold shower was just fine!

Gregorio and his family are the friendliest people to be around and will accommodate you in any way they can. They picked us up from the Philips international airport, drove us to Hopkins on a free day we had, and dropped us off all of the way in San Ignacio for our next part of the trip. The food they served was the best or second best I had in the week I stayed in Belize. The jungle tours were very informative and we got to see many animals such as the kinkajou, paca, fer-de-lance, and various toucans. The jungle tours allowed for fresh fruit and birdwatching that I had never experienced before. Gregorio and his family were very in tune with the nature and surroundings, making the jungle safe and comfortable. My only regret was not doing the other tours that they offered because we did not have enough time.
Close to the cottages, there is a bar, a store, and various activities such as learning about the mayan chocolates. There is also a butterfly farm and toucan/monkeys viewing opportunities a walking distance away. If you are into seeing all sorts of tropical nature and animals with an option to be fully guided, this is the perfect opportunity.

Great guided night hike in Cockscomb with Mr. Gregorio Chun. Gregorio really helped us out and made our experience visiting Cockscomb an outstanding one. Our small group of 3 was really excited to visit Cockscomb reserve but with only one day in our schedule before visiting other locations and not having the greatest organization, we visited Tutzil Nah cottages for information and assistance. Gregorio kindly advised us and we ultimately stayed within Cockscomb Reserve for a very memorable night in the wild jungle. We considered staying at Tutzil Nah Cottages, which seemed to be very nice and well kept up, but ultimately we really wanted a night in the wilderness and Gregorio was very gracious about accommodating that and helped us contact the Cockscomb Reserve staff to arrange rental of their cottage. If you are near the gorgeous Cockscomb reserve and would like to stay in the Maya Center village, I cannot recommend Tutzil Nah highly enough.
If you additionally want to hire a guide, Gregorio is also top notch. He took us out in the evening after dark for several hours and we saw porcupine, kinkajous and had a near-encounter with a Jaguar. We smelled its breath which was incredibly exciting, likely missing it by minutes. It was a thrilling experience and I felt very safe and well educated the entire time. I will definitely contact Gregorio in the future if we are fortunate enough to visit Cockscomb again. Thank you Gregorio!

this is a five star rating for a budget room, very close to Cockscomb reserve. The towels and bedding are so clean and nice. the shower is cold water only but it is not a big deaL. Make sure you get a down stairs room.

Expert local Mayan guides for two trips. A canoe trip on the river and a hike in Bocawina. You won’t find a nicer or more knowledgeable guide of the area. Personalized trips at a great price. Trips included pick up in Hopkins and a delicious lunch. We learned about history and all the wildlife. Gregorio was our guide. He gave us personal tours of the places he loves and is a part of. A wonderful experience.

+1
One of the hardest reviews to make. Depending on your take i could see people giving our experience a 1 star to a at least 4 star. It was all how you look at it.
Our experience.
Booking by email went well and the Gregario was professional through the booking and stay. The accommodations are VERY rustic but clean. The room has no hot water but we never really noticed as the sun keeps it at least luke warm. We found the bed to be in need of replacement and the pillows were terrible, I don't know what the pillows were stuffed with but I guessed (in humour) birds nests. The community is cleaner than the average Belize village and the locals were easy to talk to and friendly in our town walk, which was a highlight. The food was simple and in large portions. One of our dislikes was that they showed you a menu but then let us only pick a meal one time. The rest of the time we were just served what they had picked. When in the bed you have to not rub your arms along the wall as the very rough cement block walls will remove your arm.skin. The room was SUPER hot at night. Wee stayed all over Belize on our trip in all non AC rooms and this oven was by far the warmest at night even with the fan provided. We some what expected this but once your trips to the reserve are over you have nothing to do. Read, sweat and walk the small village. Our biggest issue came with Jullien as our guide. First I understand they are trying to develop a business with little resources, but the vehicle that takes you in to the park is at best a junker. It has no mirrors, much of the interior is damaged to various degrees and no back seat seatbelts. Jullian then complained about the last guest starting their tour too late in the day do see much and she should know better. How would she know that necessarily??? Did you tell her ?? We met this guest and she was an intelligent young women and had a hard time believing he offered to go earlier and why he would do that. Then he told us as we drove in into the park at 6:30 the time Gregario told us was a good time to go, that it was a bad time to go and for good viewing at night we should have gone at 2am. (which if we had known this we totally would have) but he stated as fact that he had not said anything as our minds were made up already in a criticizing way. We were never offered another time, had no idea it was better later in the night or that it was an option so how he knew our minds were made-up was a curious issue for us. As for guiding he was OK . Definitely comfortable in the jungle but did not know a lot of facts. We knew many things about the animals we had researched and been taught on our trip. He not only did not know this stuff but would argue with well known facts. He would say "they SAY that is how it is but I don't believe it" or would laugh at things we said and we knew to be true. He can have his opinion but many of these items were well known documented facts, plus if he disagrees he could be less diminutive in his reaction to them. He also treated my wife like she was not there. I understand cultural differences but he often out and out ignored her comments and questions and when pointing out a bird for example he would show me then I would show my wife as he would move on and never help her spot the animal. We did the night hike and the morning hike after a terrible night. WE had booked 2 nights but could not imagine staying another night and asked to be taken to our next destination early. We paid our full two night stay as it was us who wanted to leave and had no issues paying for two nights when we stayed one, but want to state I have never ever left an accommodation early at my cost just to get away.
Having said all that its not horrible.if you are looking for a rustic experience in a Mayan village and are not looking for an amazingly knowledgeable guide and have at least one male in your group. I liked the Chun's I really appreciated what they are building in the community but our experience was not great but one in spite of our issues do not regret.

If I had to just rate the tours and the food, I'd give this place 4 stars. So I'll review that first. We went on three wonderful tours with Gregorio. He is great tour guide - very knowledgeable and attentive. Sometimes it might look like he's just sauntering with his head down but he's attentively listening to the jungle sounds. On the Red Bank tour we saw several flocks of McCaws - we had to go on a couple of steep hikes before we finally saw them - and got within 30 feet! On the morning tour, we saw over 20 species of birds including the Aracari Toucans and Keel Billed Toucans. We also saw a large group of Howler monkeys. We also went on a night safari but my wife got very nervous and we had to cut it short. But Gregorio was very understanding of the situation and we promptly turned around.
When I booked this place I was expecting basic accommodations in a nice secluded jungle setting. I must say that they have taken some creative liberties on their website on the appearance of the premises and the rooms. Again, I didn't expect much, but for $100/night I didn't expect to be lodging a few yards from the highway, or sleeping on a mattress that you could feel the wire mesh on your body, or loud music blaring late at night. Just as a comparison - we stayed at a beautiful, secluded hotel with private cabins outside of Belmopan called Jaguar Creek - and that was $100/night. So this was, in my opinion, extremely overpriced.
But Gregorio and his family were excellent hosts and the food was delicious. I'd highly recommend going on tours with Gregorio, but I cannot recommend the lodging at the current price.

We stayed at Tutzil Nah primarily on the back of very good tripadvisor reviews, but we feel quite disappointed. We knew that the rooms would be basic, and are OK with this (we're a family who goes camping and are used to basic facilities). However, this was the first time in our lives that we moved out of a pre-paid room and paid to stay elsewhere at substantial additional cost, but we felt that it was necessary. We stayed here as a family of 4 - two adults and two young children. Our original dates of our visit had to be moved as Cockscomb was closed due to clearing up from the aftermath of Hurricane Earl. Gregorio told us that we could stay there at the originally booked time and do a walk with him elsewhere (not in Cockscomb) or move our stay. Either way, he said that there was no chance of any money being refunded. So (at cost to us) we moved things around to delay our trip. Gregorio picked us up from Placencia (at additional cost) in his small run-down car. We then went to Tutzil Nah, The kids had a quick (tasty) dinner and then went on a night hike. The adults had our dinner after returning from the hike. The hike was quite nice - we managed to see a jaguar, but little else as the aftermath of Hurricane Earl left dry leaves everywhere that meant that we couldn't be quiet. When we went to bed in the cabin, we saw lots of large cockroaches scampering around our room. They assisted with getting rid of these cockroaches, but my wife still barely slept all night with the fear of more running around! The room (as expected) was very basic - a dusty floor, cold showers but our own toilet. There were two fans, which were needed as it was boiling hot. The next morning we got up for an early morning hike. We again didn't see much, and felt like we could have done this day hike by ourselves. The waterfall was lovely. We started early, and were back by 11:30am. When we asked what we should do for the rest of the afternoon, we were told that we could explore the village. The problem is that there is little to see - we saw it all in about 30 minutes when we arrived. So we had a choice - sit around the whole afternoon and evening in the heat with little to do other than a short chocolate tour (additional cost), then sleep in the cockroach room again - or go back to Placencia to enjoy the beach, atmosphere etc. We decided to go back to Placencia. We paid Gregorio to take us there and we're so glad we did. We got no money back for the things that we paid for but didn't use (extra night of the room, dinner, breakfast). I would say that you could stay somewhere nicer, and organise a separate tour; or organise to stay within Cockscomb; or stay just one night with Gregorio. But don't do what we did and pay for 2 nights or you'll find yourself with many hours to do nothing in the middle of nowhere.

Tutzil Nah Cottages is a really nice family-run guesthouse with affordable rates. The rooms are VERY basic, but Gregorio and his family are lovely. However, we stayed here primarily to do tours of Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary, and I think there are better ways to experience the jungle.
We took the night jungle walk tour and the day jaguar preserve tour. We were probably a bit unlucky but both tours were shockingly quiet. We saw (and heard) nothing on the night tour and saw only a handful of birds on the day tour. The wildlife was simply not around. Even the birds were VERY rare so our tours were mostly just walking the trails, which you can easily do on your own.
Our guide was clearly very knowledgeable based on what he did tell us, but our tour was mostly silent and he didn't try to compensate for the lack of wildlife by telling us much about the plants we passed.
Maya Center is a fairly pretty village and I liked the people are Tutzil Nah, but sadly I would not go there again or recommend others to do so. If you want to visit Cockscomb, I would suggest staying in the park where you can explore the trails, and experience the sights and sounds of the jungle, without the hefty tour price tag (alternatively you could arrange a tour from Hopkins if you found an inspiring guide).
