Detailed Reviews
Our stay at Kanantik was by far the best vacation we have ever taken. We arrived on Sunday, pale-skinned and tired from our crazy lives in New York City. After 6 glorious days at Kanantik, we departed relaxed, well-rested, and tanned (and very, very sad to leave). On the plane ride home, we kept saying, "if we were still at Kanantik right now, we'd be eating or sitting by the pool or having drinks at the bar."
The resort is spectacular, and the preservation of nature within the grounds is a sight to be seen. The cabana was beautiful and comfortable. We especially appreciated all of the Belizean handiwork that went into the cabana's construction and the furniture. We miss waking up to the birds chirping and sound of the waves crashing on the beach.
The staff was incredibly warm, friendly and knowledgeable. Their willingness to share their experiences in Belize taught us about a special place in the world, and now in our hearts.
We have already recommended Kanantik to some friends and will continue to do so with extreme pleasure. We will be hard-pressed to find another place in the world that will compare to Kanantik and can't wait to visit again."

Kanantik is isolated and luxurious, and we were pleased overall with our stay, with just a few issues to note.
The location is spectacular. What a luxury to have so much space available for so few guests. While we were there, there were probably only about 12 other guests. So, we had a chef, bartender, activities people, etc. all serving this small number of guests basically 24/7, and most knew us by name. The food was fantastic; pizza night was a particular highlight, when they fired up the wood fired pizza oven. Clifton the bartender is fantastic; we found him to be probably the friendliest person on staff at Kanantik. The guides on the excursions are also fantastic; we went hiking two days and canoeing one day, and birdwatching one morning. Bring binoculars to see all that you can. The cabanas are spacious and luxurious. The bathrooms, in particular, are fantastic, with a walk in shower of river stones.
The only cons we have to offer up:
- We found there to be a lot of biting bugs, and were thankful we had brought a variety of bug sprays. When we checked in, Roberto asked how many bites we had. When we said "none", he said "well, you'll have 100 after you leave here!" Well, we did. From other reviews, it looks like this is not always the case, but bring plenty of spray just in case. There is not a shop on premises where you can buy it.
- We were very disappointed that during our five day stay we were unable to go snorkeling. Each day, they said that the weather wasn't right. Even on the last day, when we left under sunny skies and calm winds, I heard him tell the other guests that they wanted to wait until tomorrow, because the weather might be better. I can certainly understand that some days might be better than others, but waiting for the "perfect" day can be a tricky game in this part of the world, and we were very displeased that we could not do this.
Are these nits? Maybe. But, for the price you'll pay to stay at Kanantik, you deserve to get what you'd like, so don't be bashful about asking.

We truly enjoyed our honeymoon at the Kanantik. The rooms were wonderful (especially because ,being frequent travelers on business we were both very tired of the typical hotel room experience,---the Kanantik is not typical it's a very welcome change). The food is wonderful. Whenever i craved anything and mentioned it to my husband, the dish would magically appear at our mealtime. Our flight back was at noon, and they packed sandwiches for us to take with us. Yes, Roberto the owner does tend to be partial to older couples, but he was nevertheless very nice to us (we are in our early 30s). We took the snorkeling, hiking to a waterfall, and mayan ruin tours, the guides were very knowledgeable and accomodating. One of the guides even took us to show us his Mayan village. The cabanas were very clean and the food is incredibly good--try the huevos rancheros for breakfast. We spent a lot of time eating, reading, touring, and hunting around near the pond for a python which was sighted by one of the couples.
Just keep the following in mind and you will have a good time. The resort is in the middle of a wildlife preserve, so you will see plenty of bugs and animals (including crocodiles, pythons(if you are lucky), agoutis, lots of birds, etc). We did not see any tarantulas or scorpions in or outside our cabana, one couple did say they had a few gigantic roaches in their cabana, but we did not have any issues. There are flies that bite..and the bites itch for atleast a good two weeks after the trip, so be prepared and spray yourself with lots of bug spray. You may not be able to swim in the water by the resort due to a lot of silt in the water (we went during the beginning of the rainy season in May), but the snorkeling was still wonderful (about a 30 min boat ride away). We did NOT see any needles (as one reviewer posted) on the beach or have any negative experiences at the resort. If you go the last week of May, you will get a lot of rain (mostly at night) ,but we still got to see plenty of sun and it was wonderful to sleep while listening to the rainfall (torrential rain fall --like you'd expect to hear in a rainforest).
All in all, i would love to visit this resort again. Highly recommended if you are looking for a relaxing vacation out of the norm. If you are looking for the hotel room experience, then go to the bahamas or take a cruise.

My wife and I just returned from Kanantik and am more than qualified to offer an opinion. In a couple of words, if you read no further, I would suggest you not even consider this place!
Amy M's review was close to calling it correctly and was certainly more accurate than any of the others I read and having reread them several times I wonder if they were writing about the same resort I visited.
As I understand it the resort has been sold to a corporate body that was visiting the property while we were there and I can only hope they make some drastic changes soon, as it needs it badly.
Let me start with the positives. There are three. The staff is wonderful, very helpful, capable, caring and professional. That's one. Two, the rooms are spacious. Three, the food overall is excellent, and I say that even with one night ordering pork chops that tasted something close to what I would assume shoe leather does.
The biggest negative here are the cabanas. While spacious, they are far from comfortable given the fact that the air conditioning is so poor that the only time you feel comfortable is right after you drench yourself in ice water and then stand within a foot of it. It's the worst excuse for an air conditioner I ever experienced. And if the lack of any semblance of air conditioning weren't enough, stand by for the bugs. None of the window openings have windows, but screens that aren't close to being flush with the sills and serve as a super highway for the myriad of strange creepy crawly things that occupy the rooms rent free. Heaven forbid if you get up in the middle of the night to visit the restroom. I can't begin to tell you how many things I stepped on. The mosquito netting around the bed is more decorative than useful. It's so hot inside the room anyway with no air conditioning, try not breathing at all with the mosquito netting deployed.
The 1300 feet of beach front as described in the website is accurate. What it doesn't describe is the 1300 feet of shoreline is so brackish from the canal upstream that you wouldn't dare swim in it. The one morning (of five) it was clear, we managed to take out one of the kayaks for a couple of hours but by ten or eleven the brackish water reappeared and we stayed away.
We did partake in two of the three included side trips. We did not take part in the snorkeling trip, so can't offer anything about it one way or another. We took part in the Mayan ruins trip and the Wild Animal sanctuary visit.
The Mayan ruins were good, the drive there and back was quite an experience. Our driver and guide was a nice guy and knowledgeable about the subject, but his driving, well, suffice it to say was an adventure. He used the trip as a qualifier for the pole at Indy! Whatever the speed limit was he exceeded it by far. True, there wasn't all that much traffic on the roads, but driving on the wrong side of the road, upgrade around a curve was a bit much for me. And it's a two to two and a half hour trip each way!
The Wild Animal Sanctuary, must've preserved them pretty well. The only animal life we saw were several yellow butterflies and about two billion cutter ants.
Yes this "resort" is out in the middle of no where, you are stuck there. There simply is no place else to go near the resort. But, that's what I expected and didn't mind the remoteness of the place at all and was looking forward to it. But this place isn't even comfortable. I would simply not recommend it to anyone.

My wife and I went to Kanantik in the spring. I usually write reviews right after we return, but this time I have waited. I think that is because I'm still not sure if I really enjoyed the trip.
Getting there: We flew into Belize City and then took a small plane trip to the resort which has its own runway a few miles away. The small plane ride was fine, sat about 10 people and you get views of the surrounding countryside. The airport was fairly small and a little confusing. We actually walked passed our bags on the way to the plane and told the person working there, she said, "no problem, your bags will make it there", which they did - on a different flight four hours later.
From the landing strip to the resort you are taken in a Mercedes mini-van type vehicle along a fairly bumpy dirt road. The driver was very friendly. You start to get a good sense of the land in Belize, which I would describe as arid jungle (if there is such a thing).
We arrived at the resort which is at the end of the road. It's not overly fancy, but nice. The reception area is basically in an open aired hut and check in was simple. Keep in mind, everything here is open air - there is no glass on any of the windows. The cabanas have screens, but they are not completely tight. The common areas don't have any screens.
Buildings: The common area has two large thatched roof structures. One is for the bar and sitting area, the other is the dining area. These are very impressive structures. There is a pool beyond this, then the beach, then the water.
To the left and right of the pool are the cabanas. There are about 20 in total. Some are right on the beach and some are set back a bit. They are very impressive in a thatched roof, cabana kind of way. They are very big with hard wood floors, beautiful wood furniture and a covered porch out front . The tiled shower is tucked in the corner and, although very private, has a view of the outside through the screen. All in all - very nice accomodations.
______________________________________________
Food: Dining is in the dining hall during certain hours. Although the menu is predetermined for each meal with a couple of choices for each course, the food was generally very good. Maybe3.5 to 4 stars out of five. We tried some different things we normally wouldn't eat, but we liked all of it. You sit at your own table and the service is low key and effecient.
_____________________________________________
Activities: The resort included a few activities for the price and there are others you can add on. There are sign ups the night before to make sure there are enough people to make a trip. Our planned snorkeling got canceled b/c of weather, so can't comment - although the boat looked nice.
We did go on the Jaguar preserve trip. It's a little misleading b/c the chance of seeing a jaguar is very close to zero. The trip is more of a hike through the jungle - there aren't any caged jaguars. We took the "shorter" hike and it was still very challenging, but the view at the top of the trip was great. Our guide was awesome and showed us a lot of things we would have never seen without him.
I did the river canoe trip and it was great. You have to paddle down and back the river, so it's not like you just float, you have to work at it, but there was a lot to see and worth the effort.
We also did the pre-dawn bird watching trip. This was pretty good. You don't see tons of birds, in fact you have to really look for them, but it was different and worth getting up early for (barely in my opinion - wife loved it)
Sailboats were nice. Very fast and easy to sail.
______________________________________________
Beach: this was just ok. I went swimming and the water was warm, but full of silt. Apparently there is a river upstream of the beach and made for very cloudy water when you swim. Kind of creepy actually - if you want blue water to swim in this is not the place. The beach was always empty though, so you could sit out and read/relax - and no kids (I have 2, just nice to have some peace).
_________________________________________________
Show: near the end of our trip there was a show put on by some local folks. This involved singing and dancing and story telling. It was one of the best things about the trip. I rolled my eyes when they said the guests would be involved b/c I'm not a big fan of that, but by the end I was out there dancing and enjoying myself.
_______________________________________________
Staff: Very friendly. The trip guides were great and very interesting. Bartenders and wait staff were very good, but also very reserved. It seems like the owner is always watching and it was very difficult to get the staff to lighten up.

Jungle/disclaimer/Belize: Ok, if you have read this far, you are interested in Kanantik. This is the part that caused a little concern for us. We always wanted to go to Belize, and in retrospect, I'm glad we did. We didn't see much of Belize b/c the resort is in the middle of NOWHERE. But, we did see some just by traveling and going on the activity trips. It's not a beautiful place, it's nice, but that was it. I guess I was expecting more. The mountains are nice, but not breathteaking like the rockies.
You also need to know that this is a jungle. Yes, it's on the beach, but it's a jungle on the beach. There are alligators near by and other creatures typical of a jungle. My wife hates bugs, but we decided to go anyway. We saw some bugs, but not that many and it didn't ruin the trip. Just be aware, this is not the Four Seasons. We did have a visit from a scorpion one night. It walked across our floor. This is my wife's biggest fear and it caused her a lot of distress. It didn't bother me much, but the fact that it bothered her really bothered me. Some other folks saw them too, but it didn't seem to bother them.
We knew all this before we went, but hoped against hope it wouldn't effect the trip. But it did. It did't ruin it, but put a real damper on it.
All in all we had a good trip and the resort was nice. It seems like no matter where you look for a resort on the water you are going to spend money. It was easy to get there and easy to be there. It's a little rustic with plenty of comforts.
I'm glad we went, but I would go somewhere else before I went back.

My significant other and I decided that we wanted to try something different - something more exotic - so we chose Kanantik. I have to tell you it was worth it! The resort, the people, were just amazing! Kelvin, the "jack of all trades" made sure that we were comfortable all of the time. Roberto, Fermenta, Rod, Clifton, and everyone else waited on us, hand and foot.
The cabanas were private and spacious. Only 25 on the property. The beaches were spectacular. It was like being in your own villa. Room service was available if you wanted it, dining a la carte, laundry service, snorkelling, diving, canoeing, touring the Mayan ruins, and so on, and so on.
THIS IS NOT A FIVE STAR RESORT - IT'S A SEVEN. You have to go!

Just finished a stay at Kanantik and was a little disappointed. First, I will state that I booked this trip over a year ago. I had to cancel the trip. Kanantik was very generous in offering us a full credit to use within a year.
The reason I chose Kanantik was for the full service resort with an on site dive opperation. My husband and I had visions of diving everyday and then relaxing on the beach in the afternoon. This was not the case. We were informed when we emailed the hotel about their dive opperation that they no longer had one on site, but would be happy to set us up with another dive shop. We ended up contacting Happie Go Lucy Tours in Hopkins and went out with them. We had a great time, but this was not the roll out of the cabana and dive trip I had planned. Hopkins is about a 45 minute drive from Kanantik.
My main complaint is that Kanantik's website is misleading. As the above reviewer states, it is no longer a full service resort. It is being used to sell real estate for Sanctuary Belize, who seemed to me to be a high pressure sales team. We were told when rebooking our trip that they hoped we would not mind being there with a large group. I was informed it was a group of potential property investors. I felt that since I had a credit, there was not much I could do. They gave us a beautiful cabana away from the group. It was a little weird being there with people who I felt were on a time share sales trip listening to motivational, high pressure sales techniques with bank representatives there waiting to take their money so they can finish the project that is underway. Not what I had envisioned.
We experienced a bug problem while sleeping. The bed in our cabana was infested with something that bit our legs. Wevasked for the sheets to be changed, which they were, but the bugs kept biting.
I have only good things to say about the staff. They were all very friendly and helpful.
If I had to do it again, I would book at Hamanasi.

Reviewing Kanantik is hard.... During the day I would say it is a 4-5 star hotel. At night, it is more like a 0 star...
1. Activities- The activities such as snorkeling and the Mayan Ruin Tour were great. Peter was very informative. No complaints at all there.
2. Food- Pretty good. Nothing to rave about, but you won't go hungry. The only down part is there is no room service or late night food offered here.
3. Service- Most of the staff were great, very accommodating. Rodney and Carol were fantastic. Our only complaint was at the end we were stuck with a drink and food bill even though we were all-inclusive. Apparently it didn't cover the last day. Not a big deal, but it would have been nice to be warned.
4. Location- Beautiful. Secluded.
5. Sleeping- AWFUL- the cabanas A/c does not work, so you will be hot. The cabanas are not sealed- AS IN NO WINDOWS. There are gaps between the wall and the roof big enough for a small animal to crawl in. Every night we had an assortment of monster beetles, moths, lizards, flies, and mosquitos in our room. Not very romantic. Forget about using the mosquito net, it is so hot in there you'd be smothered. Mattress is cheap and uncomfortable.
6. Amenities- No Spa or Fitness area. Pool is average.
Overall we were looking for a romantic relaxing vacation. I returned home feeling exhausted, and my feet are covered in about 50 sand flea bites. I'd only recommend this place to people who are looking for seclusion and don't mind bugs. I hope to catch up on some sleep on vacation- not gonna happen here.

We spent six days at Kanantik over the New Year holiday, and it was a truly wonderful experience. The property is an immaculate little corner of paradise. The cabanas are big, isolated, and beautiful. The bathroom are especially luxurious with their wonderful semi-outdoor showers.
We happen to despise big resorts and prefer more intimate places with a strong focus on quality and service. With 25 cabanas, Kanantik is the perfect size resort by our standards. We had a chance to meet a nice variety of interesting people, and the pre-dinner gatherings in the lounge each night provided a natural opportunity to mingle with new and old friends.
The food is excellent, combining great local ingredients with the owner's Italian flair. Pizza night sounded a little silly to me for a Caribbean resort, but it's pretty wonderful to order any kind of pizza you can imagine (like lobster, basil and garlic) on the beach in Belize and have it arrive with the stunning flavor you rarely find outside Italy.
The activities are great and quite well planned. We went on a pleasant canoe trip, toured Mayan ruins, and went diving twice, all included in the bill. While Kanantik is not cheap, the quality of the accomodation, meals, service, and activities make it a splurge that is truly good value.
Some people complained about the owner favoring some guests over others. We definitely found him to be quirky and awkward with us, while much more friendly to others. I can't say we cared that much, but it was odd. We also thought it a bit unusual that the resort does not allow children, but the owner's own 5-year old is ubiquitous -- and not shy.
We did get bitten up a bit by mosquitoes but, hey, it's the jungle, and keeping bug spray around helped quite a bit. We saw no other major critters though a couple other guests did report scorpion encounters.
I highly recommend Kanantik for anyone who wants to splurge on a wonderfully relaxing and intimate resort.

Following a wonderful week in the mountains of Belize at Blancaneaux Lodge, we spent an equally terrific - although quite different - six nights at Kanantik - the rare combination of a long, private white beach on the Caribbean with jungle out the backdoor. Within the several hundred acres owned by Kanantik, there are two water holes, one just a five minute walk from our casita with a second story viewing blind. The first time there we spent nearly two hours - not knowing the time went by - mesmerized by the animal life below and about us: a huge crocodile, turtles, agouti (the favorite food of jaguars - who supposedly haunt the property but the most anyone has seen is a pawprint), iguanas of all sizes and colors (one as big as a German shepherd) and many gorgeous birds and butterflies - wait till you see your first Blue Morpho - the national butterfly of Belize - Wow! All excursions are included in the price - and each one we took was absolutely great in every respect. The day spent snorkeling on the barrier reef will always be unforgettable for us - the coral and fish and clarity of waters better than anyplace else we have visited. We canoed through mangrove swamps and hiked the jaguar preserve - all with topnotch guides, who were more than knowledgeable, they were unfailingly kind. The owner of Kanantik, Roberto, is very present - and that is a very good thing. His standards are impeccably high - and that reflects onto everything at the resort. I was concerned with brushing my teeth - water from the faucet - since no bottled water was provided - only to find that all the water in Kanantik is filtered - you can drink the water in the shower. The casitas are very comfortable with romantic mosquito netted king beds - even though there are very few mosquitoes. The food is amazingly excellent. There is a set menu for every lunch and dinner but you are made very welcome to order anything you want - at all! If possible, they will do it. We celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary at Kanantik - I will say most of the other guests were in their 20s and 30s, our kids' ages - but that was no matter. Our actual anniversary was on a Saturday night. Roberto has a real Italian wood-burning pizza oven out on one of the patios and Saturday night is pizza night. He said, would you rather have lobster, or steak? No. Instead we ate under the moonlight on the beach the best pizza we have ever eatten accompanied by a bottle of great French champagne. Nothing could have been better. We highly recommend Kanantik. Every member of the staff is well-trained, personable and as nice as could be. They will take good care of you!! We can't imagine why TripAdvisor gives them 3 stars - they are a five star!!!

There is no golf at Kanantik.
Oh, you asked whether the lots are divided. Yes, we actually were able to see our lot!!! They are all surveyed and staked out and will be officially approved soon if not already.
