Detailed Reviews
I went on a full day horse ride on Hazel from the Martz Farm stable. It was an awesome ride. Hazel was gentle yet lively horse and not at all mischievous. Joe, my guide, is the owner and super knowledgeable about everything. We explored a fascination cave filled with natural wonders and Mayan artifacts (and Spirits)! Miriam prepared a delicious sandwich with fresh backed bread at the farm’s kitchen. Before and after the ride I explored the grounds. The facilities are clean, well designed and just the right amount of modern to make the guest comfortable yet still be surrounded by natural Belize rainforest. I can highly recommend the accommodations, food and horses.

Our family (2 adults, 2 kids age 6 & 9) stayed in the Family Suite at Martz farm for three nights in February 2023 as part of a longer vacation in Belize. Of the different places we stayed, Martz Farm was our favourite.
The family suite included two large rooms, each with an extra large king bed and two twin beds, as well as a separate bathroom that was for our private use. We chose to stay in one room all together. The room was simply furnished, the beds were comfortable, and the room was clean and tidied daily for us. The shower had consistent hot water (an exceptional luxury based in our experience elsewhere in Belize). There was wifi.
Meals were served centrally, and guests generally chatted to each other during mealtimes. There were about 10 guests including us while we were there. Miriam made an effort to make sure my picky children had food choices that worked for them, while serving delicious local and western style meals to those with a more refined palette.
While at the farm, Joe took us on his double decker pontoon boat and we spent the day exploring some special secret spots he discovered as a child exploring the jungle with his brothers - I won’t spoil the experience for you by sharing details but I will say it was a very special and memorable experience. We swam in the water, and had a delicious BBQ on the boat.
Joe also took our family horse back riding - neither kid had ever been on a horse before but we managed a steep jungle trek adventure. Joe chose horses that made sense for our dispositions and abilities, and we felt safe under his care. My son said it was the best thing he had EVER done (now tied with snorkelling at the Belizean barrier reef).
For my kids, that the farm had SIX DOGS, made the place especially special. Each of them quickly bonded to a dog and they were inseparable during our time there. My older son played soccer for hours with Luna (our ball survived but I make no promises for yours) and my younger played fetch and snuggled with Tunco.
The property has a jungle trail and a nice swimming hole. There were very few mosquitoes and the nights were cool enough to sleep comfortably. Some of the other guests had been making annual visits for 20 years and the place had a real sense of community and belonging.
Martz Farm was a great choice for us and we’d like to visit again. I would recommend for those travelling with kids to bring some fruit and other snacks for between meals, and for all to be prepared for a slow drive from Benque (the road could really use a grader). Thanks Miriam and Joe for your care and hospitality and for being such a memorable part of our vacation.

We stayed at Martz Farm for 4 days and had really great experience - I would highly recommend anyone traveling to Belize to visit. Some highlights...
We opted for the treehouse and it exceeded any expectations that we had. It's so lovely and sits at the edge of creek with a small waterfall...it's such a nice sound to sleep to. Mariam put sweet touches in the room that made our arrival feel special.
The food was amazing!
We did the half-day horseback riding and the boat tour. They were both really fun and involved a lot of beautiful sights. I'd highly recommend both but for anyone who may need to pick just one for time, do the boat tour! It was easily one of the best days of our entire 10 day vacation.
Mariam was thoughtful and communicative ahead of our arrival so that we knew how to get there and what to expect ... which was very helpful.
For dog lovers, they have four very friendly dogs that will take any amount of love and attention that you want to give them. Big plus for us :)
We hope we get the chance to visit again.

I don’t know a thing about the place because I never went. I tried to get my money back over a month before I was due to go but they told me because I booked with someone else their refund policy is void.
I understand everyone wants to make a living but this is just no right. It is to bad because I have been coming to Belize for 18 years now and I will never stay at their place nor will I tell others about it. There are plenty of others places to go...oh I almost forgot to tell you my room didn’t have electricity.
I guess you live and learn.

We regret yo hear that we were not able to meet your expectations regarding our cancellation policy. We take our responsibility and commitment to our guests seriously, and we honor our cancellation policy at all times. Unfortunately you did not book with us, but on a third party platform, and as such were tied in to the policies governing that specific booking agent, which is why you were charged the cancellation penalty of one night plus taxes. Our best advice for the future is to ensure you understand all the policies of the specific online travel agent you work with, or book directly with the hotel of your choice. As far as the rooms go, you are absolutely right, out of our 7 units we have two units that target the adventure traveler, and are romantically candle lit. 6All the other units have your regular 110 Volts, powered by our on site solar system. We offered you a free upgrade to a standard room, which you declined. We regret that we couldn't meet your expectations this time around and look forward to hosting you in the future, should you change your mind.

First of all I want to thank Joe and Miriam to opening up their wonderful escape for us. This eco adventure hideaway is a gem located a short drive away from San Ignacio. Your adventure starts off with your drive to get there which although extremely bumpy adds to beauty once you arrive. Joe (the owner) actually picked us up from the airport and on the way stopped at Xunatunich (Maya ruins) and gave us a magnificent tour. If you don't want to drive in Belize which we chose not to do I would recommend contacting them to pick you up from the airport it was awesome to learn about the country from your very own guide on the way to and from our stay. We stayed in the tree house for two nights. The property itself is beautiful. Miriam treated us to wonderful meals and the location offered us the ability to explore ATM and the property itself offers horseback riding, pontooning to waterfalls as well as another caving adventure. Please note that the tree house has 0 electricity and running water and you sleep under a mosquito net as the house is completely open air and actually, we really didn't even notice any bugs (January) . There are candles in the tree house, and it is set over an unbelievable waterfall which offered natural air conditioning. We were lulled to sleep by the water and awoke to the sound of howler monkeys in the morning. We were lucky enough to even see a group of them. The owners were great to chat with and provided us with a truly wonderful eco adventure experience in the interior of Belize. We hope to bring our kids back as it would be perfect for families with the friendly dogs, horses, and kitties! Thanks again Miriam and Joe!!

What an incredible place! I recently spent 3 nights at Martz Farm with my wife and 2 daughters (ages 13 and 10). We purchased the full package (Belize City transfers, all meals, and excursions) and I'm glad we did, because Miriam and Joe are wonderful hosts and Martz Farm does everything the right way. The transfers were smooth (I wouldn't have wanted to navigate those roads), the meals were wonderful (the sandwiches Miriam packed for our pontoon boat ride was the best lunch we ate all week according to my kids), and Joe personally led most of our excursions.
We stayed in the Treehouse, which the kids loved and still talk about. With the cool evening breeze and the sounds of the creek below we all had the best night's sleep each night.
For excursions we went to the ATM cave (led by Gonzo, Joe's cousin, who is from the area, has studied in caves extensively and very knowledgable and a fabulous guide), horseback riding through the jungle and pontoon boat riding on the Macal (both led by Joe and one of their sons), and the Xunantunich ruins (also led by Joe, a trained guide). Each experience was perfect and very memorable.
The best thing about Martz Farm, though, was the time spent with Miriam and Joe. Miriam prepared amazing meals, and would sit with us a little at each meal and talk about life in Belize and give us advice on activities. And Joe invested in us and in each activity made sure to take each of the girls aside various times to teach about the geography, flora, fauna, history, etc. They both made a big impact on us and made this trip incredibly special.
I can't recommend this place enough!

Our family of 4 (with 6 and 8 y/o kids) had such a lovely time at Martz Farm! We stayed at a few amazing destinations in Belize (a beautiful resort on Hummingbird Hwy, a great hotel on Caye Caulker), but Martz Farm was our family favorite place to stay, and it is the destination we will probably most remember for years to come! And it's the destination I hope to come back to someday - I wish we had scheduled more time here. We had a great time sleeping out in the beautiful jungle treehouse (over a stream), hearing and seeing the howler monkeys at night, kids loved watching the leaf-cutter ants doing their thing and playing with the Martz family dogs, spider monkeys swing through the trees on the property... Sleeping outside in the jungle treehouse, for me, felt deeply calmly and connecting - I think it especially had to do with being out in the wild.
I was a bit afraid of bugs before coming, but we didn't see a single mosquito or spider while there or get any mosquito bites (maybe a combo of the dry season in Belize, and probably also due to how well kept the Martz Farm property is).
And Joe and Miriam were wonderful people to get to know! Miriam's cooking was great (one of my daughters said Miriam's fry jacks were a highlight of the whole trip, haha) and it was the safest I felt while traveling regarding my daughter's food allergies (usually a source of anxiety and risk for us when traveling to another country).
We highly recommend horseback riding with Joe! It was both my daughter's first time on a horse, and Joe was skillful teaching them to ride, tying my little ones horse to his. It was a beautiful ride through the forest (muddy trail conditions that Joe helped my LO's navigate through) to some great views. Joe pointed out and had us try so many herbs he found in the jungle, taught us about the Mayan roots in the jungle, medicinal plants, pointed out wildlife, and conveyed such a deep respect for nature and people that I hope seeped into my little ones...

Staying at the farm was the highlight of our family's trip to Belize. We stayed in the treehouse for 2 nights enjoying the sites and sounds of the surrounding forests in a clean and comfortable environment.
Our 1/2 day horse back ride offered spectacular views of the surrounding hillsides and during our tour of the Macal River via pontoon boat we saw crocodiles, iguanas, hawks, snakes, turtles and hiked waterfalls! Special thanks to Lucas for taking great care and being so knowledgeable!!
Joe and Mariam are excellent hosts. The food was delicious and plentiful, a note have a new found love of beans.
Thank you Joe for sharing your poetry with us. I wish I had recorded and will wait for your book of poems.
The only downside to our time there is that it was too short.

I had a life-changing experience visiting Martz Farm.
We wanted to go horseback riding in the jungle and were recommended to Martz by an American ex-pat. Miriam picked us up at the border town and drove us out. It is so obvious Miriam and Joe (the owners) love what they do. We got to hear Miriam's amazing life story on the drive and how she came to Belize, and she is incredibly knowledgeable.
Their property is in the jungle, and there's a stream right by one of the treehouses. We were each given the perfect horse that matched us, and Joe took us out into the jungle. He takes time to explain all the parts of the property and his family's history there. He stopped at certain points to show us breathtaking views and show us local plants (allspice, mint, etc). We went to a spot overlooking their lake and the view is something you only ever see in movies. His knowledge of the land, history, and culture is expansive. I can honestly say Joe changed my life with his explanations, poetry, and life experience.
(BTW it is worth the money to be picked up by Miriam or Joe and brought out to their location - the drive and terrain are difficult, and if you don't have the right vehicle it will be tough drive)

My husband and I had a wonderful time at Martz Farm. We stayed in the Treehouse and breathed in fresh air all night after being lulled to sleep by the stream and waterfall that the treehouse is built over. We were fed three delicious meals a day cooked by Miriam and taken on three different excursions by Joe. We had fun chatting with Miriam after dinner and learned so much from Joe. He had so much valuable knowledge about the Mayan ruins and has even taken part in excavating them. He has found several Mayan artifacts and has made his own discoveries. We were able to ride to a cave that only Joe takes people to, we really felt connected with the Mayan people after learning so much about them.
Miriam keeps everything super clean and their boys help take care of the farm. We highly recommend staying with the Martinez family and can't wait to return with our kids.
I really loved how they took care of every detail. It was super nice for me to not have to worry about anything our entire stay. The pontoon boat excursion was really fun and the cave tubing was super relaxing and they do it all!
