Incredible value for the price! We booked a 1 night stay for 3 people that included delicious homemade dinner and breakfast. On arrival we were warmly greeted and shown to a large comfortable room. The fresh water pool was a blessing as the day was very hot, and without our accustomed ocean breezes(we had come over from Caye Caulker). As we changed for dinner after our swim the owner’s son came to let us know the howler monkeys were making an appearance. He guided us towards the main building where in the trees above a small family troop were feeding, hanging out and interacting. We got to see and hear them. Truly an amazing experience and I highly recommend this place.

Our family of 4 felt like we were staying with old friends for 4 nights. Jusef was a great tour guide and so kind and patient with our 6 and 8 year old kids. Mel and Ed cooked delicious Belizean home-cooked meals from scratch. Every day was different. We were always looking forward to seeing what the next meal was going to be and what kind of juice would be served with breakfast. The cabins are basic, just beds, a table, night stand, and a bathroom but there is hot water and air conditioning. The property is beautifully kept around the lodge and the rest is kept wild for the benefit of the wild animals, with just a walking trail. The tours were private and intimate. We learned a lot and got to go at our own pace. It is really nice to have Jusef showing you the way even when you are going somewhere where you have another guide because you get to know him and he will bring extra snacks or keep an eye on the kids or add some information about something you previously discussed. We feel like we made new friends, not just stayed somewhere. If you're looking for an "off the beaten path" place to dive into Belize, this is it!

My friend and I stayed at HMR last week, and we had an excellent experience. The property is in the middle of the community baboon sanctuary, and the Belize River is alongside it. There are tons of opportunities for viewing wildlife, floating down the river in a canoe, or taking side trips to nearby sites such as the ATM cave. The Belizean owners are warm, helpful, and friendly. We really enjoyed talking with them.

The cabins are basic, but that is to be expected in the middle of the jungle! They are spacious and comfortable and I believe most or all of them have a little patio/porch with outdoor seating and a hammock. Ours did. It was perfect for relaxing with a cold drink and listening to the sounds of the jungle!

A stay at HMR is a great value because breakfast and dinner are included. The meals were fresh, healthy, tasty and plentiful. The owners are most willing to help organize transportation and activities for you as desired.

I highly recommend HMR. Enjoy!

We stayed here in May 2019, I am finally writing a review now. This was my favorite place of our whole trip! I loved the style of the cabana and being in the jungle. It has such a peaceful feel, even with the monkeys which we heard and saw a lot. The home cooked food was delicious. Jusef guided all our tours and made sure we learned about the local flora and fauna. Our hosts were a pleasure to be around. It was a such a beautiful place and experience. If I ever travel to Belize again I will be sure to include this place in my travels.

I cannot say enough about the incredible hospitality of Ed & Mel Turton and their sons. Our small group of 3 friends arrived in Belize the day the notice came out recommending all US citizens returned home. This could have been a complete wipe-out, but thanks to the Turtons it was one of the best 3 days I've ever had on a vacation. The lovely cabins, unbelievable food, unrelenting humor in the face of knowing they were unlikely to have any guests for the upcoming months...what wonderful hosts and what a fabulous place to be "trapped!"

We had to cancel all of our other reservations, and extended our 1 day stay to 3 days with Howler Monkey until we could return home. During that time our hosts ensured we still got to see Lamanai ruins, the Belize zoo, and Ed and his sons took us snorkeling for an amazing full day on the barrier reef. The whole family did all they could to make our short stay a memorable joyous one.
When I get back to Belize, I will certainly be returning to Howler Monkey!

We were looking for an off the beaten path introduction to the Belize rainforest. The Howler Monkey Resort provided us that and beyond. Located in a rural part of the country overlooking the Belize River we found what we were looking for. The Torton family provided an intimate opportunity to explore this part of the world.
The packaging of “adventures “ with lodging is a great approach. We thoroughly enjoyed all of our adventures. The lodging was quite adequate and the meals were fabulous! The Howler Monkey Resort is not for everyone but exceptional for those seeking a close connection with nature.

We were traveling to Belize with two other couples. On the front end of the trip we stayed in Belize City. We did not enjoy Belize City at all so decided to find another place to spend the last two nights of our trip which we had also booked in Belize City. Enter the Howler Monkey Resort. We hastily booked and didn't have time to look at the reviews.

The place is run by Mel and Ed, and assisted by their two sons Yusef and Josef. My first impression was of the son Yusef who fetched us from the airport and who I found to be rude and flippant and quite condescending. Bad first impression. This kid needs to take some lessons on how to act with people. It was amazing that the parents let this kid give the first impression of their business.

The rooms were rustic to say the least. There were dead scorpions in two of the light fixtures. The room was dim and not very welcoming. It was like one step above camping.

The highlight was Mel's cooking. It was homey and delicious and she was lovely. I loved hearing her story about how the family came to run the place. It made me appreciate it a bit more, but honestly, unless you are a very tight budget and don't mind very rustic, no frills accommodations and a rude 21 year old kid, I would find someplace else.

We stayed there for 3 nights at the end of October and were the only guests to enjoy the benefits of this small resort. Mel cooked delicious food and Ed and Josef did a wonderful river drift tour with us and showed us lots of birds, iguanas and coatis. After our tours we had the pool all to ourselves, no other guests anywhere. Our bungalow was very simple and rustic, but clean and tidy and the shower was wonderful after a long day.

Yes, the bungalows are rustic and quite dark during the day too. Our air conditioning was brutally loud and could only be used to cool down while we were having dinner. At night, however, it cooled down enough that we could sleep well even with the windows open. Yes, Jusef (the older son) should work on his hosting skills, he apparently doesn't find it easy to interact with strangers. And yes, unfortunately we didn't see any howler monkeys either.

BUT: The price-performance ratio is right and we were very satisfied overall!

A nice quiet and peaceful hotel in the jungle. I booked one of the packages so all my activities were taken care of and was top notch. They were waiting for me at the airport when I arrived. The meals were phenomenal especially the catfish !
The pool was great and was a great place to spot birds during the day and star gaze at night
The howler monkeys were ever present! You will not be disappointed!

We stayed in the last cabin of this family run and owned lodge for two nights before flying out of Belize. We had monkeys outside our cabin doors howling the morning we left, which was great. Mel and Ed’s cooking is fabulous - definitely get the meal plans if you stay here. We didn’t do any tours and had our own car so can’t comment from that perspective. The resort isn’t really a resort but a lodge with cabins, which has rustic charm. My only criticism is that Sunday morning at 6:30am we were woken by loud rap music coming from another establishment - the river acts as a funnel. Whilst there isn’t anything they can do about this the son’s response to me - Yusef, was in my opinion completely inappropriate. He mentioned that we were lucky it wasn’t 4:30am and that he quite liked it. I would suggest that if the son intends to take over the resort that he would benefit from a course on tourism.
