Detailed Reviews
This was our first stay at the Carlton Hotel Atascadero. Overall our experience was positive and we will stay again. The property is conveniently located to all Atascadero has to offer as well as the nearby wineries. We enjoyed breakfast both mornings downstairs at Back Porch Bakery. The large bathtub was a nice touch as many hotels only offer showers these days. Parking is convenient. While the mattress was comfortable, using a flat sheet vs a fitted sheet is a step down in comfort. We were disappointed that the digital thermostat would only allow us to cool the room to 70. We mentioned this to the helpful front desk clerk. She came to our room and “reset” it. This allowed us to set the thermostat to 67 but truthfully the room temperature didn’t decrease. As a result we slept with the windows slightly open. This allowed the room to cool though the elevated noise level was a nuisance. Lastly the ice machine on the 3rd floor was out of order.

Was filming up around Atascadero and spent 2 nights at the Carlton. This feels like hotels used to feel. My room was huge and luxurious, the walls were thick - I could not hear the elevator once even though I had the room right next to it. In fact once through my door, I never heard anyone or anything - that's heaven for me because I go to bed early. Bathroom was also huge with separate jacuzzi tub and shower (I stayed in the vintage king deluxe). Everything was well cared for and clean. Price was extremely reasonable. Desk staff were friendly and helpful. The old downtown of Atascadero is very cute and the city hall looks like it should be the state Capitol. Some decent dining options nearby and Paso and SLO are 10 miles in each direction for wider fare. (If going to either of those cities, stay at the Carlton and then drive there = much better hotel for less money).

Okay don’t come here looking for USB ports galore, a pool, room service, or even a fitness room; go someplace else for the updated room decor. What you’ll get here is a charming old school hotel (marble bathrooms and niches/wet bar, cherry wood furniture, a quaint lobby sitting area, with a beautiful, highly qualified manager named Dina who magically found an available room at noon, and a location that, for Atascadero, couldn’t be beaten. For lunch we walked half a block to Sylvester’s for great burgers; for dinner we really enjoyed the Ale House two doors down, and this morning I am enjoying a brisk walk at a nice park across from Sylvester’s; that’s after one day of five, and I haven’t yet had the highly recommended bakery next door. Whew; I’m tired so I will stop.

Upon checking in. We were given the wrong room. 3 different times.
One room was occupied allready and the privacy of the guest was compromised.
We booked a certain room and paid thru Expedia.
Now the general manager who I checked out with not only charged us another nite but also claimed we added a nite to our reservation and up gradeded our room.
The whole experience was terrible for such a over priced placed. The manager was so un professional and rude. And days later this was not rectified.
We were accused of upgrading and adding to a Reservation when we did not.
We were over charged almost 400 dollars and still the manager Jeffery hasn't made it right.
Lost all respect for someone who accuses people of being un truthful.

We’re so disappointed with our stay at the Carlton. We booked this hotel the night of our wedding to come back to. We got in late around 10:30pm and upon arriving were escorted to our room by the front desk staff (which seemed very nice). He opened the door for us and let us into the room and there was literally someone sleeping in the bed! We were then rushed back downstairs (my wife in her wedding dress and me in my suit) while we waited 30mins for them to find us a room. They eventually found us a suite which was the only room that hadn’t been occupied and it was only available because the tub had overflowed and had dirt and water in it. I’ve tried to reach out to management and no one has gotten back to me! Terrible.

Decent hotel. Not as spectactular as the booking may suggest. The restaurant was closed (transitioning a new owner) and the check in was one staff member only to do it all. Parking for this location was first come first serve self park and a bit limited as to number of spaces. TV was quite small to see and some distance from logical viewing area of the bed. Room is good. Bath is quite nice. Elevator is looking run down. Overall an older hotel built a long time ago and renovated some years ago to keep it going. HAs some old charm left. Seating area library has reproduction books so not really a lounge type library. No bar is open other than a diner a few steps down on the same street. Advertised as a hot tub but I found out there is no hot tub, unless you consider the room bathtub. I may stay here again simply to enjoy one of the best bakeries on the planet just downstairs one door down. The location is decent for breaking up a long road trip.

The tub was really nice. The room had a weird odor and was tiny. We had interested experiences with the concierge, one young man was really nice and conversational. The young woman was the absolute opposite! Yikes. Im not sure what I did to make her treat me like this but wow. There was a dance or prom while we were there, which was fine but a heads up would have been great so we could have prepared for the noise. It was a bit disappointing because we’d been recommended by several people to stay here for our anniversary.

Our stay was fine however, on our return home we were charged for two Fiji waters that we never consumed. Frankly, even though we stayed in their largest, most expensive suite, we were a bit taken back by an Atascadero hotel charging $6+ tax for a small, 11oz. water (like they're the Wynn or something). So much so, I even took a picture when we checked out of the two waters with the associated pricing note, still on the counter where where we found them. When I called to have the bogus charge removed, I explained that we drank a few similar Fiji waters that we were given at the Justin Winery and housekeeping must have seen the empty containers in the trash and assumed we had consumed the hotel's (without looking on the shelf!). I contacted the hotel and wasted way too much of my time trying to get this bogus $6 charge removed. "We will have to get our manager involved and he'll get back to you". Really? Anyway, the manager never contacted me back and rather than calling the hotel and wasting my time once again over 6 bucks, I'll spend a few minutes writing this review, instead. We never touched the hotel's overpriced waters, my CC company has already credited our account and The Carlton Hotel has lost future customers over a bogus $6 charge of bottled water that likely costs them 50 cents or less. What a shame.

If you’re looking for old, the Carlton is for you. The rooms are depressing, the elevator buttons don’t light up. Carpets are old.
The amenities that most travelers have come to expect don’t exist.
There are no charging ports by the bed, just on the desk. Parking lot is across the street not at the hotel.
The front desk isn’t manned after 10 pm. When you check in, you’re given a code to get in the receiving door at the back of the hotel after 10 pm.
And the biggest insult were the signs everywhere that masks were required in all public areas…yet the gentleman at the desk, the only person we saw in our 2 night visit never once had a mask on.
We won’t be staying here again.

My husband and I stayed here in early September for 5 days because we just wanted to get away. We've stayed here before about 7 years ago. The manager did send us an email prior stating what was closed because of COVID (restaurant, fitness center, limited lobby hours) so they did inform us. They do have an outdoor bbq thurs-Sat which was quite good (outside). They also let us know they cannot refresh the room during out stay because of COVID. But we found that anything we needed (towels, trash pickup, toiletries, coffee) were readily provided when requested. The staff is doing the best they can to manage the guest experience against the state requirements. On top of all that the fires broke out and there was a smoke/ash but nothing bad. We found a great restaurant just a few doors down from the hotel with outdoor seating and the wineries were open with advanced reservation. We did end up spending more down time just because so much is closed but that isn't the hotel's fault. We were just glad they were open and the rate reflected the current situation.
We stayed in Room 200 and the night before we left we heard our bathtub filling up with water rapidly. I thought a pipe had broken but it ended up to be just the room upstairs emptying their tub and the backflow ended up in ours but eventually went down. This is an historic hotel so you have to be used to some quirks. It hasn't been fully remodeled but I hope it does but also retains some of the historic character.

I actually did not ask but the manager Deana is friendly and seems like she could work with your needs.
It has a very nice treadmill. The fitness center is not huge, but it has everything anyone would need for cardio and it's private and I've never seen more than one user at a time. Book it. You will be pleased.
