Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The staff offered little help when we tried to stay for a visit as a property owner there. The overall attitude was not very friendly when we asked were the lake was or when a room might become available. We just were somewhat befuddled with the reception.

We stayed just once night and it was really clean, big room. The bathroom was small and simple, but very clean too. The property is big and it’s very beautiful. The only part they forgot to clean was under the beds. But everything else was great. Comfortable beds and good shower.

I stayed 4 days at the lodge at Cal Pines. And it’s like stepping back in time. The rooms are very basic but clean and inviting. I travel about 95% of the time for my work so I spend a lot of time in hotels. This place is different for what it does not have. First thing I noticed is how quiet the place is (no noise). Also they don’t have internet in the rooms. At first I thought it might be a deal breaker but I found that I was more relaxed and I did not miss the e-mail leash that much. Also they still give you a key to your room, not one of those confounded credit card things that stop working halfway during your stay electronically locking you out of your room. The room had a view of the lake and a small deck that leads to the lake. A microwave and very spotty cable TV.

Due to the time of year the lodge restaurant and bar has limited hours but I did go to Sunday brunch. I have to say it was great! It starts at 10:00 AM and has eggs, potatoes, biscuits and gravy all the usual breakfast items but also had prime rib and a great Cuban pulled pork dish (very good) also a full salad bar and desert featuring delicious bread pudding made from cinnamon rolls. The most amazing part was the price, I paid under fifteen dollars for the brunch including tip. All in all I have to say I was not expecting much (remember Cal Pines is in the middle of nowhere) but I was pleasantly surprised and will be back when I am in the Alturas area.

I owned a cabin in Cal Pines but wanted to stay the night as we were late and the cabin would need cleaning. So we would go there in the morning. Got to our room and the whole place was one big party with a bunch of drunks everywhere. Bid mistake as we went on July 4th. DON'T go on July 4th. Thinking you will see some fireworks and then sleep. Nope the party last until every morning. This was not this year but they gave me no choice, to pick another year.
We decided to leave and had not used the bathroom or the bed. Tried to get my card creited as they could rent the room out as nothing was used. They would not refund the money. Complete a-holes. We left and never came back to eat there or anything. That so called lake is drying up and not like you see in pictures from years ago,

The accommodations were ok not a five star resort but very comfortable. The scene out the hotel was breathtaking. The other reason is the people they were so friendly and accommodating. We ate at the Lake View Diner and the food was excellent. Loved waking up to deer outside our widow

This hotel is nestled near what appears to be a few towns that are more crossroad than town. In fact, Alturas likes to call itself the "Last Frontier". The lodge is based at the mouth of what might have been thought up as a great land deal, but has slowly become a brilliant tax scheme by local county officials.

What this location has to offer is a bit of the magical creepiness that you get from movies like "Legion" or "Identity" where there are loads of locals from the nearby valley who sit in a rustic bar in one wing of the main lodge. There are two prominent signs in front of the building inviting patrons toor enjoy the smoke free environment. There is a helpful array of information for landowners inside the center lobby for people who are dreaming of building a house in this beautiful secluded spot. There are a few stuffed animal heads in the main lobby with a large hearth. Behind the lobby is a medium multi-purpose room where they were holding a local free for all swap meet. To the right of the lobby is the restaurant, where the menu was fairly representative of a lumberjack diet.

Pricing. Amazing!

We had visited this property in the past to have dinner in the restaurant (Excellent) and booked a three day stay for this trip. Longest three nights of my life..., beds were VERY hard. Room was not very clean and towels were tiny. The staff was very nice, however, which is why they got 2 rather than 1 stars. I should have known when I noted no mattress pad.... Just a sheet over a bare mattress. Never again.

My husband and I decided to take a road trip this week during spring break. Cal Pines was our first stop, booked for 2 nights. We figured we had the time, so why not check out those inexpensive lots & see what it was all about. Check in was mostly OK, except the poor gal was having a hard time using the new chip reading card machines. We were disappointed to find that the bar & restaurant were closed during the days we were there (Mon-Tues). We were the only one's staying in the entire lodge, I have to admit that was a little weird to me being spring break. Once we got in to our room, I was pleasantly surprised. The ceilings are vaulted A-Frame style w/ knotty wood, and while somewhat dated, I've seen much worse. There was a mini fridge, microwave, coffee pot, flat screen TV & Wifi. Things that could use improvement- bedding is looking a bit worn, and the bathroom itself is pretty cramped quarters, our door didn't close easily, the shower door didn't close well either. I was worried the toilet was going to run over because the water ran so long. We decided to stay just for the one night because we found the land was not something we were interested in and to be honest, the town itself is pretty drab. Our choice to move on had nothing to do with the lodge itself. I imagine this place does a lot better in the summer when it's a little warmer out & families can enjoy the outdoor amenities. I have nothing negative to say about the staff, they were very nice, and our dog was welcomed with open arms.

We were only here for one night. This place is not close to anything and you probably know that before you come. You are but going to stumble upon it. In our case it was our friend's wedding. Peaceful location for a wedding and we enjoyed our time here with friends. The rooms are basic and ours had a view of the lake. The staff was very friendly. Bring a hair dryer and bug spray, and plenty of your own ice! Pool is only open from 12-6:30 so don't expect to take the kids swimming if you're only staying one night.

I've been visiting this lodge since the 1980's and though it's not as posh as it used to be, it is still one of my favorite places. Not a lot of extra's here, but the knotty pine rooms and beautiful views, along with a great price make it nice in my book. Could be I'm partial to it because I've been going there so long. Our last visit the sheets and pillow cases were dirty, that is a thumb down. Other than that it's a good deal when you're in the area.
