Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I like to stay in hostels when I travel alone; the low-key atmosphere and chance to cook something simple instead of going out are perks for me. I also like the chance to be around young people who are typically interesting and well -traveled.

I considered a shared bunk room and decided against it; that is more than I want at this point! Clear rules about quiet hours were posted and I heard no noise from my third floor room.

I was pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness of the single room and the price was reasonable for DC in March. The front desk staff was responsive and poised. The kitchen was immaculately clean.

I never stayed in a hostel, I always wanted to, especially when I don't have enough budget but I worry about my safety.
I stayed in high road hostel in an only female dormitory room sharing the room with 5 other women. The beds are very comfortable, and clean, everyone is respectful of sleep time and the staff is the nicest ever!
I am a Muslim and the room was kinda tight but there was a lot of space in the kitchen and few people are there so I usually pray in the Kitchen and I felt so blessed and peaceful. the location is great!
I loved everything about the hostel, there is literally nothing i d ask to change.
There is a kitchen and fridges so I didn't have to spend money on food out. However, I d say bring ur own shampoo and soap, the ones they give felt very cheap and low quality, I didn't dare to use it.

Eazy to find, friendly stuff, clean. Lots of bars on the nearby street. Don't know about other days, during my stay for breakfast was offered various types of cereal, milk, juice, coffee.
The beds were comfortable. As 6'6 person l fit relatively good. Although I prefer to have no footboard

I’ll start of by saying this was one of the more “homey” hostels I’ve been to, the kitchen is great, there’s two really good bus stations 2 minutes away and the staff are very nice.
There were two main problems:
First, when I first came in to the room I noticed the floor wasn’t clean and thought to myself well they’ll probably clean it tmrw. They didn’t, for the entire length of my stay. I couldn’t say anything because two workers were my roommates (out of a 3 bed room). This is also more of an home for these two and room felt like it.
Second, is the bathrooms- there were no hooks to hang clothes or even a bag and my clean clothes fell into the toilet once, and a even more serious one is that the shower floor was extremely slippery and I really had to be careful so I won’t fall.
Despite all of the above I do recommend this hostel, just hopeful they will do some thinking.

I checked into a private room at HighRoad Hotel on Tuesday. I was checked into a small room in the basement and within a few hours I started to hear the pitter patter of tiny rodent feet coming from the ventilation shaft above my bed. Upon looking out the window, I could see 3 rats outside, metres away from the external door to the room. I complained to the manager who didn't believe me that the rats could have gotten into the building. I asked to move rooms but they were fully booked. I asked to get a refund and they were very reluctant to do that. After much wrangling, they ended up giving me a refund for the second night and half of the first night. I wasn't best pleased with having to pay $130 but i didn't have much choice as I had to try and find another place to stay at very short notice.

If you are remotely uncomfortable with the idea of living in very close quarters with rodents, I would avoid this hotel.

Response from General Manager, Owner at HighRoad Washington DC
Responded 1 Oct 2023
Hi Seaside, Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience here with us at HighRoad Hotel. We appreciate you choosing to stay with us as a part of your trip to DC. I would like to extend my sincere apologies for the issues you encountered during your stay. This is not the experience we want any of our guests to have, and I completely understand your discomfort and frustrations. We take such matters seriously and with high urgency, and we immediately investigated the incident to ensure it was promptly resolved. We recently had HVAC renovations and one of the technicians accidentally left a small hole in the building wall near the HVAC refrigerant lines -- that small hole appears to have been the possible entryway for an unwelcome visitor. We immediately contacted pest control who was here within the hour to inspect, treat, and triple check all areas, evacuate any critter above the ceiling, and patch the hole in question. The issue is repaired now. Your reservation was for a room called the Lower Level Deluxe Queen room which is located in our lower level. Because we are located in a dense area of the city where alleyways are shared with multiple neighboring properties, there can unfortunately be sightings of rodents in alleyways that cannot always be 100% preventable. We have monthly pest control come in to help inspect and treat both indoor and outdoor areas and as needed so we can always be on top of any possible problems. I also want to apologize for the inconvenience and frustration that you faced when requesting a room change and a refund. We had completely sold out of all rooms on this particular night, so we unfortunately could not move you into another room to better accommodate you. The manager on site needed to ask some questions to understand the situation which we know took some time. The manager was happy to extend a refund due to the situation with your room and not having any additional rooms to offer. Your feedback is an opportunity for us to learn and grow, and we are committed to making the necessary improvements to provide a better guest experience. We appreciate your patience and understanding in this matter. If you ever decide to give us another chance in the future, please don't hesitate to reach out directly, and we will do our best to ensure your next stay is a pleasant one. Once again, I apologize for the inconvenience you experienced, and I hope we have the opportunity to welcome you back and provide you with a more enjoyable stay. -General Manager, HighRoad Hotel

Plusses: Great location in period residential neighbourhood, around the corner from bumping street of clubs and eateries, many with streetside patios. Attractive common area with large kitchen for the use of guests. Comfortable bed. Friendly helpful staff. Minuses: My mattress (bottom bunk in a three person room) was right on the floor, which meant crawling in from the foot of the bed. Not a lot of bathrooms for common use. Lots of noise from restaurants and clubs into the wee hours. Nearest Metro stations 10-15 minutes away, although there are many nearby bus stops. Hostel accommodation obviously not to everyone’s taste, but I find it an excellent choice for the solo traveller. This one was a great find.

Great hostel! Clean rooms and common areas, nice helpful staff, great location and near to several restaurants and a Safeway grocer. Bring a lock for your in room locker BTW.
There are Metro buses and a Circulator bus within walking distance so it’s very easy to get around the city. Can’t wait to stay here again!

It was the reception that I hoped it to be. The location helps to explore the city by metro, bus, and bike. Adams Morgan is the locality and it met my demands for the days I was here. Everything is clean and well organized, friendly and helpful staff. Just really nice accommodation to visit!

I really loved this hostel - it was the second one I tried while in DC and I must say that the service was really wonderful. The place is clean, nice, bright.
The curtains around the bed are a real +, and the team is really friendly and welcoming.

Really recommend!

Also, the neighborhood has been my favorite in DC over the 2 weeks I spent here - not directly in the city center, but you have a great choice of nice places to eat and grab a drink.

High Road elevates basic accommodations with a phenomenal location in the heart of Adams Morgan; hospitable and helpful staff; and cleanliness. I booked a private room and bath, which was ideal for my needs. When extra space was needed to work, the kitchen and lounge areas were ideal for this purpose.

Answer from HighRoad_Hotel_DC
Washington DC, District of Columbia
Hello, Thank you for your inquiry. HighRoad requires a Standard Security Deposit at or before the time of check-in. Our policies have recently been updated and are as follow: *A security deposit of $100 is required to stay. *On the day of arrival, an amount of $100 will be pre-authorized on the credit card that was used for payment. *The pre-authorization amount will be removed and returned within 7 days after the check-out date unless any damages or other costs are incurred during your stay. *HighRoad will actually tell the banks to remove the pre-authorization on the day you depart, but it typically takes the banking system up to 7 days to remove the pre-authorization amount. HighRoad requires this security deposit for the safety of guests and for the safety of staff. We've found that most reputable hotels in the U.S. require some sort of security deposit. This is our standard security deposit as of the time of answering this question in July 2022. Our policies are subject to change. Our own website will always have the most current information on policies and pricing. We hope that this answers your question. We look forward to hosting you in wonderful Washington D.C. soon.

Do the shower stalls lock for privacy? Are they segregated by gender?
Answer from HighRoad_Hotel_DC
Washington DC, District of Columbia
Hi Tiffany, Yes, the shower stalls lock for privacy and they are segregated by gender. We have women's only bathrooms and a keycard is required to access those bathrooms. Also, we have individual private bathrooms on the 1st floor. Every door has a lock. Every stall has a lock. I hope that answers your question. Please let us know if we can help with anything else.
