Our 8th graders and chaperones stayed here during a Washington D.C. field trip. The individual bunk beds were ideal for students to have their own space, rather than sharing beds. The staff was friendly and very customer-oriented. They responded promptly to questions and concerns. When sending a technician to a room during the day, they contacted the lead chaperone to be certain that minors would not be present in the room. When we unexpectedly needed an additional room in the night, they quickly accommodated us. The rooms were clean, and the beds were comfortable. Location in the city was convenient and reduced our travel time since we historically have stayed in VA due to cost. Like many city hotels, there is no parking for buses.

I was in town for the day and this was the perfect place to nap and shower. The staff was great, and accommodating, which made the fact that the pool was closed, and there was no onsite breakfast more palatable. The dorms have solid wood and metal bins that you can put you personal belongings in. Bring a lock though! Bit if you forget, they sell them at the front desk.

Excellent ambience. My room was clean, organized and quiet. I enjoyed my stay. The bed was not as soft as I wouldve liked but I was able to get fairly decent sleep. Each room has its own bathroom and provisions for extra necessity like towels and toiletries. I Would definitely recommend 👌

I stayed in the “hostel” rooms for this visit. As an older person let me share my experiences and leave you some tips if you decide to try this.

First of all, it works: the hotel is in a great location in DuPont Circle, near lots of restaurants, shops and the Metro station. The hostel experience (my first) was fine: the room was clean, my roommates were quiet and respectful, and the bed was comfortable.

Its a little strange sharing a bedroom and a bathroom with strangers but ultimately I got what I wanted- an inexpensive place to sleep in a comfortable setting in DC.

Some things to be aware of:
There’s nothing in the room besides the beds except for a couple of stools and a small closet. No TV (probably a good thing), no comfy chairs and not a lot of space. There is a common area on the main floor that has couches, chairs and tables to hang out at.

Because of the size of the rooms I felt more comfortable making calls from the lobby or outside, not in my room.

There’s a single, lockable drawer to stow stuff, but if you feel unsafe you need to bring your own lock. I didn’t, but felt safe and nothing of mine was ever disturbed.

Bathroom- you get one towel and as they all look the same need to keep track of it. There are no glasses in the bathroom, so you should either bring a water bottle or grab a paper cup someplace and bring it with you.

There’s no eating in the rooms- due to allergies, but it also keeps the smell and crumbs away. A good policy, and there’s a restaurant downstairs and plenty in the neighborhood.

Again,if you’re traveling alone and looking for an inexpensive bed in DC and willing to cede a little privacy, this is a great alternative. It was probably a little more than a third of the price of a standard hotel room in the same area.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us! We appreciate you shouting out cleanliness, comfortability, cost effectiveness, and location. We do apologize if the dorm space was more bare bones than you expected. In our private spaces, we do have a TV, more seating, a fridge, etc., but for the sake of noise complaints and allergies, we don't have many additional ammenties in the dorms. In the future, if you ever need extra towels or water, feel free to ask for more at the front desk.We hope to see you the next time you find yourself in DC!

This is not your traditional hostel. It is a hotel with lots of rules and a few dorm rooms tacked on. I stayed in a 4 person dorm. The room itself was very spacious and had under bed lockers for some things (not big enough for a bag) . There was a table with 2 mirrors for getting ready or working. The bathroom however was ridiculously small. It did have everything you might need shower, bath, toilet and sink. It was missing a hand towel or paper towels to dry hands which was annoying. There was no body wash or shampoo provided not a problem as I had my own but it is usually provided in hostels. There is no set quiet hours so if you get unlucky with roommates they could be quiet loud. The reseption team on my arrival was quite rude and really didn’t want to be there but this got much better throughout the week. The restaurant is reasonable but not much for people who are gluten free, sane with the cafe. One of the rules is no outside food or drink. When I checked in I was told no outside food or drink anywhere on the property and I had to either use there restaurants or eat elsewhere. As my stay progressed I saw people eating outside food in the common areas or on the patio so am very confused about this rule. This is no self serve kitchen like in most hostels. There is a self service laundry $2 to wash $2 to dry. They will change notes to quarters at reseption.

My partner and I stayed in DC for a few days. The location of the Generator was great and there was a garage (paid) on site which was helpful since we drove. It was challenging to find the rate for the parking online.
The staff was very friendly and kind. The beds were comfortable. The rooms aren’t large but it was perfectly fine for our short trip. Downsides- the room did not have enough light. We had to use the bathroom light at night because the room lights were very dim. Also, the body wash had a very masculine scent and was bit difficult to pump out. It would be nice if there was a cleaner/less strong, more unisex scent.

Location and price were our primary focus when we booked Generator Hotel for our Roguetrip to Washington, DC.
The location isn’t too far from all of the big attractions, but just enough out of the way to be relaxing. The hotel is on a hill and on the corner of a residential street. There is a bit of a challenge getting ‘to’ the hotel for check in, because the side road is small, narrow, full of cars, and one way only. So for visitors coming for the first time, it can be a bit of a challenge. There is no pull up spot for check in.

The hotel is very cute and modern looking on the outside it is a lovely boutique-style hotel. . There is a large outdoor patio around the hotel. When you enter the lobby, the front desk is located at the end by the coffee bar.
In the lobby, there are several little privacy rooms along the wall.
The room was very generous and spacious. The bed is comfortable and clean with no sign of ‘visitors’. We requested extra pillows & towels – which were not present in the room when we arrived – we had to ask for them and an Ice bucket down in the lobby.
The bathroom is very spacious, and clean -with no issues. The shower is at a decent height for tall people.
There is an outdoor pool – it opened after 10 am and closed at 8 pm when we were there, so we were not able to use it.
The exercise room has a few pieces of equipment with a lovely mural of Muhammad Ali.
There is a lovely Mexican restaurant inside the hotel – which looked like it would be a good place to eat.

Like many hotels these days, hotels were very expensive. – but this was actually the cheapest hotel we could find in DC, and it wasn’t a bad price.
They have a tiny underground parking lot – probably a dozen spots or so. The cost of parking was fairly high. I got sticker shock with that. It would be very cost-prohibitive for many people for longer stays.

No houses keeping on any of the 4 nights we were there. "King" bed was 2 twin beds put together. Parking garage was a hassle and could have been solved with a ticketing system. Water was shut off on our last day so we could not shower or flush toilet.
The staff was nice and did great. I don't blame them at all

I stayed here as part of a college student group visiting DC for a week. Loved the hotel. The staff were excellent and the rooms were comfortable and clean. We were able to add a continental breakfast for our group every day which was reasonably priced. Certainly helped in terms of setting our group up for a day of monuments and museums. I loved the decor both in the lobby area and the rooms. The availability of singles, doubles, and quad rooms made this a very affordable option for a student group, but without losing any of the comfort and security of good hotel. The location is excellent, just a short walk from Du Pont circle restaurants and metro. Would definitely recommend the Generator as an affordable option in DC.
