Our 4 day stay at Hei Matau in January introduced us to the best New Zealand has to offer.. Great hospitality, unique architecture, delicious breakfasts & evening bits, accurate advise on trails and things to do. Most of all, Peter, with his dry sense of humor, and Fiona with her attention to every detail, made our stay carefree and fun.

Any trip to the North Island should include some downtime at Hei Matau

We were lucky enough to be among the first guests at this stunning new lodge on Waiheke Island. Peter and Fiona are great hosts and can’t do enough for you. They provided a delicious breakfast and we really enjoyed the evening nibbles and wine, which were served in the summer lounge. Our room was gorgeous (beautiful bed and linen) with lovely views out to Motuihe Island and Auckland City beyond. This is the best place by far that we have stayed at on Waiheke Island.

My husband and I stayed 1 night on Waiheke on our whirlwind trip through New Zealand for our honeymoon. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hei Matau Lodge all thanks to Peter and Fiona who were wonderful hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed the view of the serene beach, delicious breakfast, and wonderful canapés that Fiona made. The room we stayed in was beautiful with an amazing view! It had a mini-refrigerator, cookies, tea, fresh fruit, a bottle of wine, and various other drinks. Peter and Fiona even got some music and special lights out after we came back from dinner to make our honeymoon celebration even more special. Peter was an excellent host, offering to pick us up from the ferry, take us down to the beach (Oneroa Beach), and out to dinner at Cable Bay Vineyards. It was wonderful since we did not bring our rental car from Auckland. It was expensive, but well worth the money for the experience. We would definitely make the trip to Waiheke and stay at Hei Matau again.

An amazing location overlooking the water. Peter and Fiona the hosts look after all your needs including preparing beautiful canapés each night, supplying an amazing cooked breakfast each morning all freshly prepared, picking you up from the ferry, making restaurant booking and taking you to and from the restaurants which are close by. The little extras they provide make your stay very enjoyable, homemade cookies , a bar stocked with water, soft drinks and a bottle of wine on arrival. It is expensive but well worth the experience.

A truly magnificent experience. We stayed for a couple of nights after our wedding and were so happy with everything Hei Matua Lodge had to offer. The views were stunning, Peter & Fiona are extremely accommodating and the breakfast and evening canapés were 5 star! We wish we could have stayed longer but now is back to reality as they say. You will not be disappointed.Bring on our Anniversary's cause I know where Ill be spending mine!

The relaxation for my husband and I started on the Ferry ride to Waiheke but that was nothing compared to what was in store for us at Hei Matau Lodge.

We were collected at the ferry terminal and shown around the lsland a bit. The views on the drive set the bar high but when those gates opened to Hei Matau and the panoramic view was exposed the bar has forever been raised as I am pretty sure that is what heaven looks like.

My husband and I spent 2 nights and 3 days on Waiheke. We commented that the level of relaxation we felt indicated we had been there a lot longer (and we had a wedding to attend in amongst the luxury holiday we had). 2 nights at Hei Matau was just what the doctor ordered.

Peter and Fiona's hospitality was so lovely. We felt welcome but were left to enjoy our holiday. The little touches did not go unnoticed. Peter and Fiona looked after us and nothing was an issue, including asking to stop at the gate just one more time so I could video those gates opening (just so I can look at it on a work day to bring some calm to my life).

The food was divine oysters on arrival and mussels the next day. Peter and Fiona seamlessly catered to my dietary requires ensuring that everything prepared was gluten free but also delicious. Breakfast was such a treat - I especially loved the omelette and I wish I had have asked how it was made.

The touches in the room and the "turn down fairy" made it a very luxurious experience (I commented that I felt a bit like a celebrity and how this must be what their lives are like without the paparazzi). We both felt very privileged to have the experience.

The infinity pool and spa were wonderful and the view from our room was so stunning I had to take photos to remember just how stunning it was.

The peace and quiet was second to none and I am trying to persuade the family to book it for exclusive use next year so they can enjoy the experience too. I would highly recommend Hei Matau to anyone wanting a luxury get away and peace and quiet (all only a 30 minute ferry ride from Auckland - or if you really want to go crazy a helicopter ride landing right at your destination but in my opinion that would mean you miss the reveal of that view!!)

Thank you Peter and Fiona for an unforgettable experience - it was not just a weekend away but a true experience that all should enjoy!

We stumbled upon this lodge on line when we were planning a weekend in Auckland. Had no intention of going to Waiheke Island but when it was clear accommodation was scarce (rugby and Valentine's Day) we looked further afield. We are very glad we did.

Not long after booking I received a welcome email including some restaurant recommendations and an offer to book them for us. This was an offer too good to refuse coupled with the fact that the hosts will drive you and pick you up. Further, a couple of days before arrival was confirmation that we would be collected from the ferry and a simple SMS was all that was required to confirm arrival time.

A warm welcome in the common lounge area with the offer of coffee and tea cake before being shown up to the room.

The room itself is spacious and decked out in hues of greens and browns. Large corner windows gave us a view over the pool and bay which was just beautiful. There were a couple of comfortable chairs, TV and DVD player. All very comfortable and fitting with the theme. There is no air conditioning which I thought strange to begin with. Obviously opening the windows brings a lovely breeze through the room and in fact I understand that it does not get that hot on the island. There is underfloor heating throughout for the winter months.

Bathroom is spacious with two sinks and a shower (no bath) and a loo with a view! Very nice toiletries and other touches (such as items you may have left behind) as well as great big fluffy towels. Bit of a warning on the shower, you may find a small puddle outside as the water escapes.

Evenings are spent with your hosts (Peter and Fiona) and other guests for pre-dinner canapes and local wines either in the communal lounge or on the deck. Fiona prepares a range of changing little delicacies which were difficult not to fill up on before heading out to dinner each night.

It was then off to dinner and we took advantage both nights of the offer of being driven and collected.

We didnt really utilise the pool or beach or deck. That said, breakfast was served al fresco and what seemed at a time convenient to us - this was a real delight. Another food warning - breakfast servings are large, tasty and go straight to the hips!! The servings could be halved in size and you would still be completely satisfied! We sat in two different spots each day and were well attended to.

On returning the second night we asked for some cheese and biscuits and wine to finish the night. This was waiting for us (see photo) when we returned and finished off the night perfectly.

Also recommend the walk along the local walking track. Great scenery and not super difficult unless you really hate stairs.

If there was to be one item of feedback it would be having the ability to have a snack during the day and if it is available, understanding what is on offer. As we really did use the time to relax it was not clear if there was food available during the day and the costs. I know you can get more as we had the cheese platter. It really is a minor issue but one that I think would be nice to know.

Definitely can recommend this lodge - you cna't fault it.

Hei Matau is a fantastic, luxurious property overlooking the Hauraki Gulf. Peter and Fiona are great hosts, and are passionate about the property, and ensuring their guests have a great time. Waiheke Island is a relaxing place, with plenty to see and sample, and Peter and Fiona have great knowledge of the choices. However for laid back relaxation and privacy, it would be hard to beat spending your day lounging back at Hei Matau, in the sun, in the pool or the spa, or on the "jetty", watching the boats go by in front of you. Amazing. Thank you.

Thank you Fiona and Peter for a wonderful weekend. Such an amazing and beautiful house with stunning views! Couldn't have picked a better place to stay on Waiheke! Had great time fishing in the channel and watching the stars from the spa. The breakfast Fiona cooked was restaurant quality and the pancakes were FANTASTIC!
Thank you for a lovely stay and we hope to be back soon!

My sister in law found this place online and thought it would be a great place to celebrate my dads 90th.

We booked the whole place and had heaps of room to do our own things.

The kitchen was stocked with everything you needed for a weekend away, and there was so much to choose from.

The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable, all with ensuite's and luggage bench with storage areas.

The views are beautiful, we had a spa which looked out over the bay, and jumped in the pool which was freezing but worth cooling off in.

Overall we had a very good weekend at a lodge with outstanding facilities
