We stayed at OBE in the Manuka suite for an anniversary weekend celebration. My husband had chosen OBE based on its excellent TA reviews and because we were seeking, peace, quiet, vineyards, and a spa. It did not disappoint. Although there is no sea view from the Manuka suite itself, there is a sublime view down to Owhanake Bay from its private balcony terrace where we sat out most mornings and evenings. The suite is as pleasant and well-appointed as other reviewers have noted. Soaking in the private spa while looking out over the olive groves and listening to the native birds and black duck was quite enchanting. Other highlights of our stay included sitting out amongst the vines with the estate’s own Pinot Gris and the delicious (and extremely generous) tasting platter of local goodies - especially the herb paste and fig conserve; the walk around the nearby headland (with jaw-dropping views); and the private massage in our room. Waiheke is a rambler’s paradise – do spend some time investigating the nearby walks suggested in the guest information. We dined at the Mudbrick Vineyard Restaurant (recommended, and the views are outstanding) but would also warmly recommend Fenice in Oneroa for an informal, but delicious meal. The walk to town along leafy Korora Rd is a joy on a sunny day/night – especially if you take the beach shortcut which Mike will point out to you – and seemed to only take around 10 min. Mike and Christy have created a very special place at OBE and they are wonderful hosts. Highly recommended for a charming, romantic, and restorative escape.

Mike and Christy have created an amazing getaway on Waiheke Island. We stayed with them for two days on our honeymoon. Mike met us at the ferry upon our arrival and made sure our stay got off to a great start. He drove us the ten minutes to the property, gave us all of the information we would need, took us on a tour of their amazing gardens, vineyard and pool, then drove us back down to the ferry so we could pick up our rental car. Amazing service!

The room itself was airy and modern (we were in the Tamure Suite). The bathroom was spacious and nicely appointed, the kitchenette included a small refrigerator and plenty of counter space and the bed was very comfortable. There was also a flat-screen TV and DVD player. The best part, though, was the porch, which looked out at the bay and was a great place to watch the sunset.

Mike and Christy were great hosts because they weren't smothering, as some other B&B hosts can be. They were available when we needed them, but otherwise let us pursue our own plans on the island. Breakfast was great - we had a full hot breakfast with eggs, sausage, pastry, muesli (granola) and yogurt. And they pointed us to a great hour-long hike just a few minutes from their property, with amazing sea views. Plus the bottle of wine included with the room (their 'Melina' Flora Pinot Gris) was great! And at the end of the stay they drove us back to the ferry.

A few notes: 1) While you could walk to Oneroa town, it would probably take 15 - 20 minutes and involves a decent-sized hill. I recommend a rental car or a taxi. 2) We highly recommend many of our activities, including the hike, dinner at Mudbrick Vineyard, lunch at Te Whau Vineyard, and wine tasting at Peacock Sky, Cable Bay and Kennedy Point Vineyards. 3) The Stony Batter / Man O' War Bay loop road is not paved, so allow plenty of time and drive carefully if you go that direction.

Overall, we had a great stay at Owhanake Bay Estate with Mike and Christy and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great escape close to Auckland!

Friends of ours organized our stay here for our wedding night. We knew from the second Mike pulled up at Mudbrick to pick us up that we had made the perfect choice. The place is stunning! Everything everyone else has written is so true: the tour, the genuine warmth of Christy and Mike, the views, the bed, the shower, the spa and pool, the breakfast - all stunning. We have stayed in loads of places and this is by far one of the best of the best. We wish we could have stayed more than one night! There are just so many touches that make it so classy and elegant and just fantastic. We loved it.

Stayed here for 2 nights in March in the Tamure Suite

Our impression is a little mixed.

Pro.:

Very nice deck with chairs and table and fantastic view over the bay.

Very comfortable bed.

Quiet location but only 1/2 hour walk to center of Oneroa.

Nice freshly baked bread in the morning.

Con.:

Juice, spread, jam etc. in the fridge was not replaced after our first breakfast - not even when Mike brought the bread ob the second morning.

Mike had to go to Auckland on the second day of our stay but told us his wife would clean the room on her return from her job. Never happened.
When Mike returned around 18.30 he knocked our door and asked if anything was ok he seemed surprised the room was not cleaned. He offered to clean the room but we found it too late.

When we tried to make coffee on the second day we missed some equipment for the coffee brewing. However no one at home and the expense for calling Mike would be very expensive as we had a Danish mobile. No coffe that morning but Mike provided us with the missing part in the evening. Why didn't he check before our arrival.

So all in all - paying 850 NZD for two nights we had expected more.

Response from Owhanake, Owner at Owhanake Bay Estate
Responded 28 Jun 2014
We are very pleased that you liked our tranquil location yet close proximity to Oneroa Village, the beautiful view over the bay from your deck, the comfortable beds and the fresh pastries in the morning. We do try hard to please all our guests. We had a rare misunderstanding which meant your room was not serviced in the daytime, which we apologised for as soon as we discovered it, and offered to do it while you were out at dinner, which was declined. We stocked the fridge with 4 bottles of complimentary high quality organic juice at the start of your two day stay - which we think is sufficient. However, if guests ask for something during their stay then we try to oblige in any way we can. Other provisions such as spreads, butter, bread etc are re-stocked as needed. This would be done as part of the room service (explained above), and we recall asking if there was anything we could do for you that evening. When we are not here we invite all guests to use the phone in the suite (at our cost) so you could have called our cell phones that way. We accept that our service was not at the high standard we expect of ourselves during your stay, and again apologise for that. We occasionally do make a mistake, but always try to put it right and to do our best for guests.

We were looking for a relaxing get away and we found the ideal spot at Owhanake Bay Estate. From the spa under the stars on the first night to the wonderful views from the deck of our well appointed accommodation we nailed it! Superb walks right at our doorstep. We had access to guided wine tours that picked us up from the accommodation. Our hosts also offered a shuttle service (for a fee) so that we could enjoy the fine wining and dinning available on Waiheke without having to worry about driving or taxis. All in all we thoroughly recommend Owhanake Bay Estate

We had the loveliest time here. From the second we arrived we were welcomed by Mike and shown around the stunning vineyard overlooking the little cove. White sails are dotted against the glistening water and sitting on our private balcony reading the label on the bottle of award-winning 2012 Syrrah we looked out at the sunset. Mike can't do enough to make you comfortable -and the self-contained bungalow is private and thoughtfully decorated with lovely organic toiletries and home-grown produce in the fridge. We enjoyed a scrumptious cooked breakfast in the morning and a soak in the hot tub under the stars at night. It's a perfect place for romance and we can't stop congratulating ourselves for finding this gem in Waiheke!

We only stayed for one night at OBE but when we returned home to Auckland we felt as if we'd been away for much longer. A sign that our stay had been truly excellent. We had the one night package with massage (Karen superb!); dinner at Cable Bay Vineyard (divine food, watching the sunset), bottle of Pinos Gris in the room; garden tour; breakfast and pastries at coffee time. We combined it with the Waiheke Headland Sculpture Trail. Mike Taylor made our stay pitch perfect with his eye for detail and easy manner. The room met a very high spec in every way and the Bay is quiet and such a lovely setting. You'd struggle not to relax and enjoy a stay here. Highly recommend this if you need to recharge the batteries or for a special occasion.

This is a must stay when visiting Waiheki Island. Mike and Christy are the most wonderful and accommodating hosts that truly make you feel very special. From picking us up at the ferry to driving us to the restaurants, nothing was ever too much. The room was very comfortable and had an excellent king bed. The fridge was stocked with breakfast supplies, including their own Manuka honey, some great organic juices and pastries that were made out of lettuce so even I could have them. Mike showed us around the property which has vines, olive trees, bee hives and Christy's wonderful vegie garden. We also had some of their award winning wines and couldn't resist ordering and sending it home to OZ. The views from the verandah out to the bay are very serene, peaceful and private. Mike organized a place for dinner and our winery tour, all were fantastic. We had been to a Conference and this was the perfect place to unwind for 2 days. Thank you Mike and Christy, we'll definitely will be back some day!

Relaxed and rejuvenated is how we felt on leaving Owhanake Bay Estate. Beautifully situated overlooking the nearby' cove within an easy amble into town. Mike our host was very congenial and accommodating driving us to our various gourmet indulgences which is one of the main reasons we visit Waiheke, frequently. A truly lovely spot!

My wife and I usually head to Queenstown for her Birthday on New Years Eve, this year there were no available flights to Queenstown and all the hotels were booked up because I left it too late. Fortunatly google came to my rescue and I found this place called Owhanake. What a turn up for the books our host Christy was delightful, she made us ever so welcome on arrival, we even got a tour of the vineyard and got to taste the beautiful wine as well. We were due to relax for two nights in the lovely Owhanake accomodation prior to heading home, but we loved it so much we knocked on Christy's door and said can we stay a third please. Waiheke is a beautiful place and Owhanake is a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle, but close enough if thats what takes your fancy. Waiheke and Owhanake certainly took our fancy as a result we have now bought a house on the island and intend to relocate from Auckland in March 2013. Thank you Christy.
