I stayed at the Gateway ahead of an early morning ferry departure.

Rooms are a bit tired and bathroom starting to feel a bit grimy but the bed was super comfortable, good sized TV, good wifi, tea and coffee facilities with UHT milk in the fridge and a nice close car park (I was in Room 2).

Perfect location though - walk out the driveway and you are in the centre of town with all the local restaurants and bars within walking distance, close to petrol station and only 3 minutes drive to the Bluebridge ferry terminal.

Could probably be $10 cheaper for the room for what it is but makes up for it in location. Plus the proprietor I met was very welcoming (-;

My children and I spent 5 days at the Gateway Motel seeing the New Year in.
The rooms were very spacious for an adult and 2 children, they were very well kept with staff servicing our room each morning.
Perfect location to stay as it is central to the town center which makes walking the main street with children in tow a breeze.
Just a 2 minute walk to access the supermarket, cafes, the family playground and water park located on the foreshore and not to mention the award winning bakery located at the front entrance.
The staff were friendly and accommodating at all times.
Really appreciated the staff turning the water sprinklers on the lawn to keep my children entertained in the afternoons as the heat was still in full force late in the afternoon made watching the kids play while cooking the BBQ in the entertainment area hassle free.
We will definitely be back in the future.

Thanks Team.

Fabulous Stay and bike ride is an extra Bonus! Kent is very accommodating and the tour on a bike ride around picturesque Picton is an Extra Bonus!! Kent is very knowledgeable about the location when he gave us tour around this beautiful town on this most coolest bike ever. Would Stay again and Highly Recommend! I live in Sydney and travelling around the picturesque NZ atm and consider myself so lucky as Sydney Australia is a lock down atm. Luckily I am not there. NZ is fabulous to visit at any season. its a picture perfect country!

Stayed one night so we we could be close to the ferry terminal in the morning. Unfortunately the room we had was tired and could do with some R and M . The carpet is in need of a good clean . The room we had had I’ll fitting blinds for Window coverings and given that all courtyard lights remained on all night our room was lit up like a Xmas tree and unfortunately the room was hot and the bed uncomfortable. Having said that the owners were very welcoming and check in was easy plus we were directed to an undercover location to park our motorcycles for the night which was much appreciated
With a little more work this could be a great budget motel

It is what it is: a basic, no frills motel situated on the main street of Picton town. Ideal for a 1 night stay if you are catching the ferry to keep the rain off your head The positives are: the bed was comfortable, the sheets clean and crisp. Cutlery and crockery was spotless. Our bathroom in the upstairs Queen room seemed to have recently been rennovated although the shower has an enormous step up to get into it, its quite humerous. If you have limited mobility youd struggle.
The negatives: very few powerpoints, and what ones there are are in weird locations. You have to find one behind the TV just to plug in the kettle. The TV sitting on a bench has a spaghetti of cables which is unsightly (should be mounted on wall with plugs and wires hidden). Wi-Fi is shockingly poor, no good if you have buisness to do.
The bathroom sliding door had no guides at the bottom so the entire door can swing in and out. The lighting in the room is hiddeous; super bright strip lights behind the bed and an ugly glass shade and basic bulb on the ceiling. Decore cheap with ugly artwork and Warehouse curtains. Single glaze windows allows voices from people sitting on the balony in the evenings to be heard clear as day in the rooms, not ideal if you are trying to rest for an early morning ferry crossing. The table and chairs in the room is actually aluminium patio furniture that should be outside.
UHT milk in fridge horrid. Is it worth $175 a night without breakfast? Probably not, but I guess they can charge what they like because ferry passengers often need to overnight in Picton.

I expect 2 things from a hotel that I pay $200/night. 1) clean floors. 2) a bed that will give me an ok nights sleep. This place failed on both accounts. The carpet looked as though it had been involved in a mud fight and of the three beds in our room, not one of them were decent beds. We are not fussy people. We just expect if you are paying to sleep, you should have a bed that doesn't sink to the floor. Also be mindful that if you are given an upstairs room, it's 24 steps to haul your luggage. There will be no offer of help, even if you are 83 & 76 as are my husband and I. I would never stay here again.

My husband and I stayed in a studio budget room - number 16 for 2 nights.
On our arrival at reception there was one person checking in at the time. The lady checking us in seemed overwhelmed that someone was waiting and was not very welcoming. She told us how much we owed and when we paid, proceeded to hand us the key. I asked if she had a map of the area and was handed a bit of paper. No welcome, "enjoy your stay" or anything. We got a better reception and a map from the volunteer welcoming those off the cruise ship and the ferry.
The room was on level 1 and a bit of a struggle carrying 2 suitcases and backpacks up many stairs. It was clean and appeared to be recently painted with a newly tiled bathroom. However, the skylight in the bathroom gave away the age of the place as it hadn't been touched since the motel was built. It looked terrible. The hot water came through reasonably quick, the towels were of good quality but only a sachet of shampoo and conditioner provided and no tissues.
There was a king size bed, a single bed, 2 old bedside chests with 1 drawer in each. A small strip light on the wall above the chest of drawers which you had to get out of bed to turn on and a ceiling light.
A small round wicker/glass table and 2 wicker chairs were crammed in against the front window. Some of the slats on the venetian blind were broken and the curtain was not much better than a piece of rag.
One plus for us was the long bench space where we could put both suitcases up off the floor.
It would have been better to have renovated the room in its entirety and made it more attractive. A bit overpriced compared to the previous 6 places we had stayed in on our road trip around New Zealand.

Paid extra for the Executive suite kitchen. As soon as we walked in the room we felt let down. The room looked nothing like the one on the website and was seriously dated . Yes we had nice bedding but the beds were poorly made and the flat sheet on the mattress was not a fitted one was just laid over the bed and not tucked in it looked messy. The carpet was dirty and extremely worn. The kitchen seriously needed updating.Certainly not value for money. The guy behind the desk made a derogatory comment about other nationalities and just handed me the key without saying which room it was or where it was. Was not welcoming at all. We stayed there two days and couldn't wait to get out. Went to Tahunanui beach Apex motor lodge and what a difference the host was there.

Was a wonderful stay close to everything all within walking distance. Staff were lovely with changing our essentials everyday which was a surprising touch. Rooms were clean and tidy and beds comfortable. Only issue was the wifi was near to nothing, think we managed about 5mins of wifi the whole trip but still even didn’t come t to pages till after a minute so had to end up using our personal internet which isn’t ideal. Overall though wonderful trip, staff were quick with helping when needed.

We stayed one night before boarding the Ferry the next day.
This motel is situated right in the middle of the main street. Excellent access to shops and cafes.
This motel complex is looking a bit tired. Certainly needs an update. Water pressure was terrible, although we were in a room upstairs, so could have had better pressure downstairs.

There is a FourSquare grocery store within walking distance of most accommodation, open 7 days has just about everything and nice fruit&vege with different specials each week.
