Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Hostel was nice and clean (porbably a result of the lack of guests and creepy notes of "we are watching you" concerning cleaning after oneself)
Staff was friendly enough and 100mb wifi was appreciated. Good coupons for picton stuff
Not worth 26$ though
We were told in the morning when we were to take the bus at 12.45 that we were not allowed to stay at the hostel for the wait, after we left our rooms. Apparently they count sitting inside in a sofa with our stuff as "using their facilities" and wanted 5$. I've never been to a hostel that doesn't allow you to hang out in the lobby areas after you've checked out. So out in the rain we were sent.
It is an average hostel, and will work fine for your travels. Not a paticularly interesting one for long term stay though

Hi Laura, Thanks for taking the time to place a review. First of all let me just say that we have signs up in the kitchen to ask people to wash and clean up after themselves because some people do not! We have them in all different languages which most people find to be a bit of fun, and like to see if they can find their language. Second of all you were not told you had to leave, you were told that you were welcome to stay but there was a $5 charge to carry on using the facilities after this time. We have check ins from 11am and want to make sure we are clean for our new guests, this is not always the case when people sit upstairs and make their breakfast, use the showers, toilets and hand basins after 10am, so a $5 charge is in place to cover the cost of the extra cleaning. If you were to stay in a motel would you go back to use the facilities after check out at 10am? We are also huge supporters of our beautiful town and want people to get out and see how beautiful it is, why would you come all the way around the world to sit in a hostel and wait for a bus, when you can go out and discover what each town has to offer, rain or shine we have a lot to offer. I think you will find that more and more hostels are starting to charge for late check outs so get out there and enjoy NZ. Happy travels Rachelle

Not sure why this hostel has some bad reviews, we had spent the previous night in a really awful hostel across the road and in comparison the Fat Cod was heavenly! Staff were lovely, the facilities are great and were all really clean and quite modern, there was loads of nice open space to hang out in too and a roaring fire going which was a bonus! It had a really nice chilled out atmosphere and the dorm room was absolutely fine, comfy beds and the whole hostel was much quieter at night than most that we have stayed in. Thanks for having us, we would definitely stay again!

This hostel is good but needs some money spent on it to bring it in line with the standard across New Zealand. The showers have hooks inside the cubicles which are mostly broken and the rooms don't have lockers but the beds are comfortable!! If I do stay in Picton again I would return here but I'd try to get straight to Nelson and skip staying in Picton. Staff are friendly though!!

Pretty depressing place, with more rules than school. I understand that these have been put in place because guests have been idiots in the past, but seriously. It's overwhelming.
The room was insanely hot and hard to get a breeze through, and so pretty unpleasant.
VERY strict check out policy - I gave my keys in at 9:30 (half an hour before the deadline!) and at 9:32 when I went back in just to triple check we'd got everything out of the room, I was challenged as to who I was (?!) and why I was going back in. So remember don't give your keys in until you are absolutely 100% definitely leaving. (Needless to say I would not stay again.)

Mouldy showers (private rooms dont have private bathroom), over priced for what you get back, needs an update from the 70s decor.

And to get to my 200 words, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

Hi, Thanks for you review. Sorry you did not seem to enjoy your stay, as all our guests reviews before you seem to have had a great time. Yes we except that the place is getting a bit tired but had you looked around you would have seen that work is beginning on the bathrooms, by the way it is not mold on the showers it is discoloration on the old glaze that is there. As for the private rooms not having there own bathrooms, we DO NOT advertise that they have in fact none of our room have there own bathrooms and this is well advertised on all our booking sites. If paying $23 for a dorm bed is overpriced then I guess we are over priced however I don't think you will get much cheaper in fact a lot of hostels are much more expensive. As for the rest of your review, the blah blah bit, well that just come down to maturity and we cant help with that. Happy travels

Just wanted to say thanks for a great nights rest. It is literally a minute drive from ferry terminal. Me and hubby had double bed opposite reception. Music stopped at 10.30pm as stated and reasonably quiet through the night. Only downside was we got woken up a few times in the morning as ppl were leaving as we were very close to the front door. Clean facilities, shower little small bt ok. Could do with paper towels in the bathroon and not a wet well used towel and fresh shower mat daily bt thats it. Pleasant stay and would stay again. Thanks.

Free bread and jam for breakfast and free soup at dinner. No lockers in the rooms and 7 minutes showers only. It's a really small backpacker, fells more like a guesthouse. Fireplace is nice. The kitchen is big enough. It's well-situated. I would recommend it if you're okay with comfort but basic.

The location is very near from InterIslander Ferry to The Fat Cod Backpacker around 7 minutes to walk. This backpacker is so nice it's like a house, all the place is very warm. The toilet is separated to the shower. The shower if you want to use the hot water you must press the red bottom (working only 8 minutes), after that you must to press the red bottom again. If you want to wash your clothes you have to put coins into the machine. The kitchen is clean and tidy. The people is friendly, but the mattress too soft, you can see clean bedsheets and bed cover. Nice smell into the house.

Loved the location of this place so close to the interisland terminal. Everything was great can't make any complaints about the place itself. Cheap, only tiny issue was I didn't feel very secure with my bags as after checkout I was told I could leave my bag pack under the staircase because 'we've not had any problems yet' but luckily everything was fine!

Overall the hostel has a good location, beds were comfy, the facilities were clean and some staff were helpful and polite and the free bike hire was good for a short cycle. Only downside was I found the group of younger staff that live and work in the hostel to be loud and inconsiderate late at night when not actually working.

They were loud up until gone midnight on both the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night I stayed. With most activities in Picton starting at 8.15am as well as the first ferry crossing check in at 8am, you would have thought the staff would be more considerate. Especially when I did ask reception if they could be quieter earlier but it made no difference as I could still easily hear them through my ear plugs until gone midnight!

This hostel has potential but don't stay here if you need quiet to sleep and want to get up early for activities or the first ferry. On the other hand if you only need 6 hours sleep or can sleep through anything then maybe give it a try!
